Abstract:
Abstract The Pentathlon is a combined athletic discipline of the ancient Olympic Games. A detailed exploration of the ancient Olympic competitions in general and of the pentathlon, in particular, allow us to discover1200 years of sport history. The spectacle of the pentathlon contest, the method of determining a winner, the order of the five disciplines is simply fascinating. The modern Olympic Games redefined the pentathlon among the Olympic disciplines. Under the name of the modern pentathlon, it gradually regained its fame won in antiquity. The military pentathlon is a variant of the modern pentathlon deployed within the military organization and is considered the king of military sports. The evolution of the modern battlefield, strongly influenced by the modern combat technique, will surely change the pentathlon contest register. Even if respect for the Olympic spirit is desired, the pentathlon must take into account the evolution of the contemporary society to keep its attractiveness.

Abstract:
Abstract Modern pentathlon requires mainly military skills and historically attracted the attention of officers only. Appropriately, the country that provided the best modern pentathletes simultaneously demonstrated its military strength. Gotthardt Handrick who interrupted a long-lasting Swedish hegemony over the modern pentathlon developed into Germany’s national pride. Surprisingly, his victory in the 1936 Olympics modern pentathlon competition is relatively unknown and under-investigated. This paper investigates how Handrick’s performance at the 1936 games was presented in Germany in various press documents and thereby gives insights into the Nazis’ instrumentalization of the sport. By analyzing different articles in German newspapers and journals it is aimed to detect the propaganda that possibly contributed to the construction of Handrick’s heroic image in an up-tothat-date minor sport. It is argued that the often criticized military links of modern pentathlon never turned out to be so true than in the pre-war atmosphere of the 1936 Olympics.

Abstract:
One of the most vexing problems facing students of ancient athletics has been the method by which overall victory in the pentathlon was determined. Testimony from ancient sources assures us that the overall victor won three events of the five contested, but that a man of lesser talent could very well emerge victorious. Because one athlete in a large field of competitors could not be expected to outclass his opponents in three of five events, two interpretations of what occurred in the pentathlon have arisen. One theory suggests a progressive elimination of competitors so as to reduce the field and facilitate the emergence of one champion. Another theory allots points to contestants for higher and lower finishes and sometimes allows elimination of athletes who consistently finish behind others.

Abstract:
Modern conditions of military-professional (combat) activity of servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine require a high level of development of their physical and volitional qualities, as well as military-applied motor skills. The most effective for ensuring the development and formation of these qualities and skills of servicemen are military-applied sports. Military pentathlon is a modern military-applied sport that is popular among cadets. The article examines the impact of military pentathlon on the dynamics of cadets’ special physical fitness. The study was conducted at the Military Academy (Odessa) in 2016–2021. The study involved cadets (ages 17–24) who attended a military pentathlon sports section (experimental group (EG), n = 30). The level and dynamics of special physical training of EG cadets were checked according to the exercises that are competitive in military pentathlon, during the annual military pentathlon competitions for the championship of Military Academy. The assessment was carried out according to the following tests: shooting with an AK-74, overcoming an obstacle course of 500 m, swimming 50 m with obstacles, throwing grenades, cross-country 8 km. It was found that at the end of training at the academy EG cadets significantly improved (p≤0,001) indicators: in shooting – by 36.8 points, in overcoming the obstacle course 500 m – by 59.2 s, in swimming 50 m with obstacles – by 5.4 is, in throwing grenades – for 38.9 points, in cross-country for 8 km – for 7 min 21.3 s. This indicates the positive impact of military pentathlon on the level of special physical training of cadets and the formation of their military-applied motor skills.

Abstract:
The rules of modern pentathlon, in which the final ranking is determined by the results of swimming, fencing, riding, and laser-run, have been revised and managed by UIPM (International Modern Pentathlon Union). This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the score characteristics of five sports events and their influences on the final ranking, and to improve the UIPM's score conversion system, by analyzing the UIPM Level 1 final records of three years before and after 2017 when the swimming score system was revised. Independent t-tests revealed that laser-run performances improved significantly after the revision in 2017, while swimming performances got worse. The results of multiple regression analysis obtained through the four conversion scores showed that all four independent variables were significant. Considering the characteristics of Modern Pentathlon In Which The Importance Of Each Component Event Should Be Similar This Study Showed that the relative importance was biased towards fencing and the swimming event was neglected. Therefore, it seems necessary to change the swimming conversion score system to assess the players of modern pentathlon accurately and fairly.

Abstract:
Military-applied sports are effective means of physical, moral and psychological training of servicemen for combat activities. A single universal program for training cadets by means of military pentathlon is not described in the special literature. The goal is to summarize the experience of building the training process in military all-around in military universities. 40 coaches of national teams in military pentathlon of 7 universities of Ukraine were surveyed. Results. Physical training of cadets by means of military pentathlon contributes to the formation of their professionalism - it improves applied skills, physical and functional readiness for combat operations. Sports result in military pentathlon to the greatest extent depends on the level of development of athletes' aerobic and speed-power endurance, as well as speed-power qualities. Most often, an obstacle course and throwing are combined in one workout. Regardless of the training period, most of the time is devoted to cross training. Conclusions. The opinions of the coaches on the key issues of building the training process differ significantly, which means that there is no single training methodology for military pentathletes in the universities of Ukraine. Research on the establishment of a scientifically grounded ratio of training volumes of military pentathletes is urgent.

Abstract:
Abstract The following research started from the idea that correcting the crawl swimming style could help improve the performance of military students in the 50 m swimming with obstacles at the military pentathlon. Alongside with other specialists in the military pentathlon and swimming coaches we have elaborated a scoring grid for every error that can occure in the 50 m swimming with obstacle event. The methods used for evaluating was the scoring grid errors for 50 m swimming with obstacles, the observation method and also the experiment method. We had two samples in our research, the first group was the experiment group that was formed by 30 students with the age between 18-22 years old components of the military pentathlon team, and the second group, the control group, formed by 30 students with same age. The results of our investigation showed that the experiment group had improved statistical significant differences compared with the control group proving the necessity of using a scorring grid for the 50 m obstacle swimming in the military pentathlon. The conclusions of the investigation showed that through the specific scoring system, the experts’ assessment certifies the viability of the new analytical curriculum introduced into student planning program within the experimental group.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the careers of athletes who practice two multidisciplinary sports: combined events (heptathlon/decathlon) in athletics and the modern pentathlon. I adopt an interactionist approach that explores all the analytical and methodological implications contained in the notion of career (Becker, 1985; Darmon, 2003). In doing this, I study precisely these careers in high performance sports. Despite the multidisciplinary dimension of the analysed sports, the corresponding careers will still be based on the phase of specialisation. This follows phases of “discovery” and “introduction”, and precedes phases of “development” and “recognition” of an expertise. Therefore, multi-faceted versatility appears as a full speciality in and of itself that shall be thought of as a process within an institutional framework rather than as an intrinsic and individual characteristic. The thesis brings forth additional results about:- the social and institutional construct of disciplinary specialisation,- the processes of sports reorientation, - the fact that sport training creates specific social configurations, - gender inequalities in the recognition of the versatility of an athlete- and the need to conceptualise inverse family socialisations to understand parental commitments in the sports practice of their children. The analysis is based on a multi-sited ethnography (Marcus, 1995) which I have used within different federal structures, and where I have observed a total of 67 days of training and competitions, and developed 40 semi-structured interviews. I have also created several databases to implement sequence analyses, read federal documentation and made a discursive analysis of the televised transmission of 2016 Olympics Games

Abstract:
The aim of the current work was to analyze the structure of training in the four – year Olympic cycle (2001 – 2004), the achieved results and to assess the dynamics of sportsmen`s physical and functional abilities over the period. The dynamics of the physical and functional abilities over the annual cycle of training was analyzed on an example of A.Z. and E.K., the most efficient Lithuanian modern pentathlonists. We analyzed physical load in 2001 – 2004 and the results achieved in the same year, the dynamics of physical development, such as body mass, muscle and fat mass, lung volume, muscular power in different zones of energy production. The efficiency on anaerobic alactic energy production mechanisms was determined by measuring single muscle contraction power (SMCP) and anaerobic alactic muscular power (AAMP). The functional capacity of the circulatory and respiratory systems was assessed by the Roufier index (RI). By fixing the speed on a running-track, pulse rate and lactate concentration in blood we determined the intensity of bioenergetic processes at the anaerobic metabolism threshold limit. Also, aerobic capacity at the critical intensity limit and anaerobic metabolism threshold limit were determined. The physical development indices of these sportsmen changed little over the annual cycle of training. In both sportsmen, muscular power under short work remained stable at the level years and showed little change throughout the competition period up to its culmination... [to full text]

The Modern Pentathlon is a comprehensive sport consisting of equestrian, fencing, swimming and combined, and is one of the official events at the International Olympic Games. There are only two high schools recruiting modern pentathlon athletes in Taiwan, and the author is currently served in one of the high schools as a supervisor of physical education. Based on the fact that the high frequent injuries in their daily training and competition, it aroused our motivations to investigate the types, distribution, causes of the injuries and the ways to treat sport injuries of those pentathlon athletes. By acquiring these results, we then can provide adequate and precise information to coaches and athletes in preventing and treating of sports injuries. Questionnaire method was used to collect data of injuries types, distribution and treatments from the modern pentathletes. There were total 71 valid copies of questionnaires were collected and the data were then analyzed by SPSS software (version 23.0). We found that physical training session is the most of injuries occurred, and all of the training sessions showed higher injury rates than during competition. As to the distribution of injuries, physical training session showed higher injury rate in thigh, knee and calf; fencing session in thigh, wrist and calf; equestrian session in shoulder, back muscles and head and neck; and swimming session in thigh, shoulder joint and hand. We also found that the muscle strain is the most common type among all the injuries. Beside the muscle strain, the ligament sprains occurred in fencing and the friction injuries occurred in equestrian are needed to be paid more attention. We also found that the major reason for injuries of those pentathletes was insufficient warm-up (45.1%), and there were only 53.5% of the players had warm-up exercise and 39.4% had relaxation exercise for 6-15 minutes before and after training or competition, respectively. Western physicians were the immediate target for players in seeking of medical treatment (31%) on the injurie occurred, and 36.6% of them continued to exercise during rehabilitation for the reason of self-requirement (22.5%). It was good to know that most of the players were aware of using protective before (77.5%) and after (85.9%) training or competition and knowing icing is the first step to treat sports injuries (67.6%). However, there were 21.1% of the athletes not familiar with the concept of PRICE, the basic treatments for sport injuries. According to the above results, we suggest that coaches and players of modern pentathlon should be more cautious on the physical training and all training sessions to prevent injuries, especially in lower limbs. Furthermore, the education in prevention of sports injuries should be further emphasized, and the injury history files for each player should be well established to access the player's comprehensive development of modern pentathlon skills and extend their sports career.

Analysis and Comparison of Worldwide Countries’ Modern Pentathlon Student: Chen Jui-Pin Professor: Lin ,Kuo-Jui Abstract The purpose of this research is to explore: 1. Achievements difference among man’s modern pentathlon athletes in different levels. 2. Achievements difference among woman’s modern pentathlon athletes in different levels. 3. Achievements difference among young man’s modern pentathlon athletes in different levels. 4. Achievements difference among young woman’s modern pentathlon athletes in different levels. 5. Achievements difference among modern pentathlon athletes in genders 6. Achievements difference among modern pentathlon athletes in man and young man groups. 7. Achievements difference among modern pentathlon athletes in woman and young woman groups. The research scopes are the top 8 athletes of modern pentathlon from worldwide and Taiwan in recent three years’ Olympic Games, Asian Games, World Cup, Asian Cup, and Youth World Cup. First, All data collected in this research is by document collection method. Second, the research scopes are the top 8 athletes of modern pentathlon from worldwide in recent three years’ Olympic Games, Asian Games and World Cup’s different level and gender and top 8 athletes’ achievements records of Taiwan in these three years. Data process: 1. Use spss10.0 statistic software to analyze data. 2. Descriptive statistics (Percentage, Frequencies, Mean): use to realize each country’s present achievements of modern pentathlon. 3. One-Way ANOVA and Scheffe’ method: use to compare the difference of modern pentathlon’s achievements in gender, rank and level, if achieve significance, analyze the result by Scheffe’ method to test research hypothesis. The research shows: (1) Athletes do not have sufficient endurance and need to increase training time. Use sport science to test athletes’ physiology and psychology and decide which one need to be assisted. (2) Training programs shall more refer to the timetable of track and field’s long distance running training, and select running course that appropriate for pentathlon. (3) Athletes’ swimming endurance needs to reinforce. From achievements analysis, the contest distances are 200 meters, which could be reinforced from short distance’s speed training; when one 100 meters could achieved within 1 minute, 200 meters’ achievements will also improved. (4) Select some athletes with good swimming performance from junior high schools to accept modern pentathlon training in the future. Because most swimming athletes are training from elementary school, but modern pentathlon’s athletes are training from junior or senior high schools, therefore, there swimming achievements are worse. This study aims to look into the stories of overcoming obstacles and making breakthroughs in cases (junior highs) when facing difficulties of major changing due to sports injuries. We use precious items like training notes, certificates of merit and reports at that time to evoke memories, and through writing and narrating to rebuild context of the stories, and via topic analyzing approach, we further interpret and self-examine the meaning be- hind the stories. In the process, we pay more attention to clarify that when there’s need of self-adaption and decision making during career transition, one should stick to principles and be active in participation motivation to bear huge pressure from trainings and contests. The study found the key factors to self-adaption is being adapted to the environment, school, language and training. Five elements— better communications, immediate clarifications of misunderstandings, EQ management, problem facing and the truth of facts, could let oneself be brave at insisting, thus can lower the harm when important people are unsupported. When encountering the problem of career decision, one should hold enthusiasm and motivation to choose their way towards career life. Lastly, though five ways—self-observation, meditation, attention transfer and deep breaths—one could lower mistakes in games. “Success is finding the exit of life, be who you are.” is the core content of self-confidence and growth behind this study and can bring referential uses to players facing similar situations. Consultant: PhDr. Pavel Hráský, Ph.D. Aims of the thesis: To compare the level of basic ability in selected motor tests at athletes and modern pentathletes of the elementary school age. Methodology: Performance of athletes and modern pentathletes of elementary school age were compared in the following general tests: 12-minute run, one- way jump, stability tests, tests jump. At the same time, the body composition was monitored throughout the test group. Conclusions: Testing of base performance showed that there are no major differences between athletes and modern pentathletes. Despite slightly better average results of athletes, we can only register a statistically significant variance in "one-way jump" where athletes significantly outperformed pentathletes. Another variance was recorded in stability tests, namely standing on the right feet but only within boys category. Even in this case athletes achieved better results. The reason being may be the higher calendar and sports age of athletes. Another difference has shown in comparison of training units within a weekly training cycle. Athletes normally...
