Full textIn a context of globalization and climate change, more and more insects are becoming invasive, particularly affecting agriculture on a global scale. At the heart of this network of invasions, the United States of America is experiencing the arrival of many species, mainly from Asia. Among them, stink bugs (Pentatomidae) threaten most American agrosystems and are now mainly regulated by synthetic pesticides. Bagrada hilaris (bagrada), native to Asia and Africa, is the most recent species to invade the USA, where it has been reported since 2008 in Brassicaceae crops. To answer the needs of farmers, USDA-ARS funded a classical biological control program to select and introduce from its native range one or more natural enemies of bagrada into California. The research included in this PhD thesis is part of this program. It sought to assess in a quarantine greenhouse whether the oophagous parasitoid Gryon gonikopalense (Scelionidae), native to Pakistan, could establish in California and efficiently control bagrada. Thus, four main objectives were defined: 1) to describe the general biology of G. gonikopalense; 2) describe its host foraging behavior; 3) examine the possibility of its mass production and 4) assess its specificity towards bagrada using Euro-Mediterranean non-target stink bugs. Objective 1 allowed to show that the physiology of G. gonikopalense was similar to that of many other scelionids: depending on the temperature, it completed its development in 7 to 25 days, its lifespan ranges from 30 to 150 days and it is able to parasitize hundred eggs during its lifetime. It shares with bagrada a thermal optimum between 25 and 35 °C which could allow it to settle in California. In addition to being an effective parasitoid of bagrada, the advantage of G. gonikopalense particularly involves its foraging behavior for host's eggs, which are buried in the ground in 90% of cases. We found that G. gonikopalense was able to dig into the soil to parasitize eggs. In addition, we have shown in a tri-trophic system that the parasitoid mainly attacks the buried eggs of bagrada, while being able to reach the eggs deposited on the host plant (about 10%). For the 3rd objective, we have shown that the storage of bagrada eggs at 5 °C over three weeks made it possible to optimize the breeding of the parasitoid and facilitate mass production. Concerning the objective 4, still in progress, we showed that among the 11 pentatomids tested, at least four were suitable for the parasitoid, and two of them were mainly located around the Mediterranean basin. These results complement the tests carried out in California and open a proactive discussion on the introduction of G. gonikopalense in invasive Mediterranean populations of bagrada. Finally, during this thesis, we have described several aspects, hitherto unknown, of the biology of G. gonikopalense. Its behavioral specialization towards bagrada makes this parasitoid particularly promising for the biological control program. A petition-to-release drafted on the basis of this knowledge submitted to the health authorities of the USA remains a short-term objective. They will then assess the risks and benefits of using G. gonikopalense to control bagrada in California

During 2011/2012 and 2012/2013, soybean fields were sampled in all stages. In this case objective of describing the population dynamics of the main species of phytophagous stink bugs and to determine the spatial distribution within field level to understand how is the stink bugs colonize soybean field. Five commercial fields submitted to different management practices were monitored. Sampling surveys to describe the spatial and probability distribution were conducted using regular sampling grids with equidistance of 50 m between sampling points. Fields were sampled weekly for stink bugs in all crop stages. The sampling method used was ground cloth, trough coutn nymphs and adults. The data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis for better understanding of population dynamics. To verify the statistical distribution to the population of stinkbugs best adjusted of the null hypothesis test. Maps representing the localization of samples of stink bugs in soybean fields were constructed. Euschistus heros was the predominant species, representing 91% of all stink bugs sampled. The stink bug population fluctuation showed an early colonization of the soybean fields, which in the past was restricted to pod formation. Our results indicate that E. heros best fits the negative binomial and occurs randomly distributed in soybean fields what allows to conclude that sampling should be done in the hole field.
Durante as safras de 2011/2012 e 2012/2013 campos de soja foram amostrados em diversos estádios fenológicos da planta. Neste caso objetivou-se conhecer a flutuação populacional das principais espécies de percevejos fitófagos e determinar a sua distribuição espacial na lavoura com o intuito de analisar como ocorre a colonização nos campos de soja. Foram monitoradas cinco lavouras comerciais submetidas a diferentes condições de manejo. Para tanto confeccionou-se malhas regulares de amostragem com pontos equidistantes de 50 metros, as quais foram amostradas semanalmente com o auxílio do GPS a partir da emissão dos primeiros trifólios até próximo à colheita. O método de amostragem utilizado foi o do pano de batida, através da contagem de ninfas e adultos dos percevejos em um metro linear. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos às análises estatísticas descritivas, para melhor entendimento da flutuação populacional. Para verificação da distribuição estatística a que a população de percevejos melhor se ajustou foi utilizado o teste de hipótese de nulidade. Mapas representativos da localização dos percevejos no campo foram confeccionados. Euschistus heros foi a espécie predominante, compondo 91% dos percevejos encontrados. As flutuações populacionais demonstraram a presença precoce dos percevejos nos cultivos de soja. A distribuição de E. heros nos campos de soja se ajustou melhor à Binomial Negativa e ocorreu de forma aleatória, asssim amostras devem ser realizadas em toda a área.

Full textThe subgenus Lycipta Stål, 1862 is included in Euschistus Dallas, 1851 and is exclusively Neotropical in distribution. After the original description of the genus, the most important taxonomic studies on Euschistus are the synopsis of Stål (1872), some redescription and illustrations by Distant (1880, 1893), descriptions of new taxa and revisions by Rolston (1973, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1984). The last paper on the subgenus is that of Rolston (1982); the subgenus status and classification have never been tested using cladistic methodology. In this work, Euschistus (Lycipta) is studied for its monophyly and the relationships among species. Specimens of Lycipta that did not fit the descriptions of known species were found among the studied material, and were considered Euschistus (Lycipta) new species. The cladogram was rooted in Carpocoris purpureipennis (DeGeer, 1783), and 11 additional species belonging to genera and subgenera considered close related were included as outgroups: Proxys victor (Fabricius, 1775), Dichelops furcatus (Fabricius, 1775), Spinalanx rolstoni Thomas, 1995, Spinalanx monstrabilis Rolston & Rider, 1988, Ladeaschistus bilobus (Stål, 1872), Euschistus (Euschistus) taurulus Berg, 1878, Euschistus (Euschistus) rufimanus Stål, 1872, Euschistus (Euschistus) heros (Fabricius, 1798), Euschistus (Mitripus) acutus Dallas, 1851, Euschistus (Mitripus) convergens (Herrich-Schäffer, 1842), and Euschistus (Mitripus) hansi Grazia, 1987. Seventy seven morphological characters were collected from 25 taxa: 13 belonging to the in group and 12 to the outgroup. Data were subjected to three parsimony analysis by heuristic search: the first with 25 terminal taxa and equal weighting of characters, the second with equal weighing of characters, but excluding the taxon Spinalanx monstrabilis, and the third excluding the same taxon and assigning different functions of implicit weighing in which K value (constant of concavity) was modified. Similar results were obtained from the three methods, only internal relations in the subgenus Lycipta varied. The first analysis generated a tree with 250 steps, consistency index of 41 and retention index of 63. The second analysis resulted in a cladogram of 242 steps, consistency index 42and retention index 64.The third analysis corroborates and supports the results obtained in the other two. Results indicate the existence of the subgenus, however Lycipta is not undisputedly monophyletic, since one of the species seems related to the sister group of the subgenus. A new species of Lycipta is described based on material from field trips and deposited in the collection of the Zoology Department (UFRG) (distributed in Rio Grande do Sul: Esmeralda, San Francisco de Paula, Caçapava do Sul, and Pelotas). After this work, the subgenus comprises 13 valid species; a key to the species of Lycipta is also provided.
