Abstract:

Acroclisoides sinicus (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) was described in 1988 from China, but recent findings in Europe and North America within the framework of Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) biological control indicate a Holarctic distribution. The few records and fragmented information on A. sinicus are derived from generic observations of other species belonging to the same genus, and its biological and ethological traits are still completely unexplored. It was suspected to be a facultative or obligate hyperparasitoid of many egg parasitoid species (e.g., Scelionidae and Eupelmidae), especially those parasitizing Pentatomidae eggs. Laboratory colonies of A. sinicus were established from specimens collected in the field in Europe and the USA, which allowed us to investigate for the first time the life traits of this somewhat enigmatic species. Our studies confirmed the obligate hyperparasitoid hypothesis for species of Scelionidae but not of Eupelmidae. Laboratory studies revealed that A. sinicus is extremely selective in its host recognition as only the pupal stage of its host species is exploited for parasitization. Taking into consideration its hyperparasitoid habit, the adventive A. sinicus populations in Europe and North America may potentially be severe threats to pentatomid natural control as new components in the trophic chain of pentatomids and their parasitoid guilds.

Abstract:

This study provides data on the first known established populations of two allochthonous species in Romania, Mustha spinosula and Perillus bioculatus. Overwintering, host plants and distribution of these two pentatomids (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) are briefly discussed. We also provide information on color variation in nymphs of Mustha spinosula and report a new host plant for this species.

Abstract:

Stink bugs (Pentatomidae) are a speciose group of insects that feed mostly on plants. Many species are considered agricultural pests of economically important crops around the globe. Mitochondrial genomes are valuable for evolutionary and phylogenetic studies, but have been little explored for Pentatomidae. Here, we characterized the mitochondrial genomes of four pentatomid species (Diceraeus melacanthus, Euschistus heros, Piezodorus guildinii, and Stiretrus anchorago) and performed a comparative analysis for this family and its subfamilies. Stink bug mitogenomes disclosed a conserved gene order and content, although we detected two uncommon armless tRNAs in E. heros and D. melacanthus. Phylogenetic results indicate that Pentatominae is polyphyletic, showing that internal relationships of Pentatomidae should be further investigated. Stink bug mitochondrial genes are under strong purifying selection, except for ATP8 which showed signs of positive selection.

AbstractWe report the detection and adventive establishment of the samurai wasp, Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), a candidate classical biological control agent for the invasive Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Nine naturally laid, field-collected pentatomid egg masses were collected in 2017 and 2018, and two of these egg masses, belonging to Halyomorpha halys and Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), produced adults of T. japonicus. The identification of T. japonicus was confirmed using DNA barcoding as well as morphological characteristics. The remaining egg masses yielded adults of the native Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) and Anastatus reduvii (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae).

Abstract:

The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) would have wide-ranging and likely devastating effects on New Zealand’s horticultural industries if it were to establish here. This insect has spread rapidly around the world, becoming pestiferous only a few years after detection; therefore, there will be limited time to develop management strategies to prevent damage if viable BMSB populations were to establish in New Zealand. Lures containing BMSB pheromone paired with 92 sticky panels were deployed near transitional facilities and other potentially high-risk entry points in the Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Nelson regions. Traps were monitored fortnightly from November 2018 to April 2019 and all pentatomid species identified and enumerated. No BMSB were captured, but seven other pentatomid species were caught. Numbers and species varied among site, region and date. The phenology of the pentatomids captured supports reports of one to two generations occurring in pipfruitproduction regions depending on growing-degree days. The phenologies of the pentatomid species caught suggest that any control measures for prevention of fruit damage by BMSB would be limited to late summer. A number of recommendations for a BMSB monitoring programme are provided.

Scelionid wasps (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) are powerful egg parasitoids which have an efficient role in the biological control of agricultural pests, especially pentatomids (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). The species diversity of these beneficial insects from Isfahan province is studied in this paper. Twenty species from 2 subfamilies, Scelioninae and Telenominae, were collected and identified. In this paper, the hosts of reared parasitoids are introduced together with the synonyms of scelionid wasps.

First record of egg parasitoids of Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in rice in Maranhão, Brazil This is the first report of the species Trissolcus urichi (Crawford, 1913) and Telenomus podisi Ashmead, 1893 (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) parasitizing Oebalus poecilus (Dallas, 1851) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) eggs in rice in Maranhão, Brazil. These parasitoids were collected in the municipality of Itapecuru Mirim, MA, in an area of 0.2 ha cultivated with rice. The eggs collected exhibited an average parasitism of 11.4%. Twenty egg parasitoids were collected and identified, these being one Tr. urichi and nineteen Te. podisi. The presence of these naturally occurring parasitoids in the field opens perspectives for updating the species of parasitoids that parasitize pentatomid eggs in rice fields in Brazil.

Abstract:

A list of the Pentatomidae species of the Pampa biome, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil is provided. The list is based on surveys carried out in the Serra do Sudeste, Canguçu and Caçapava counties, and in Parque de Espinilho da Barra do Quaraí during 2003-2004; these areas were never collected in Rio Grande do Sul state before. Sweeping net and beating tray were used to sample herb layer, and trees and shrubs, respectively. Fifty one species of Pentatomidae were registered, distributed in five subfamilies (Asopinae, Cyrtocorinae, Discocephalinae, Edessinae and Pentatominae) and 27 genera. The Pentatominae subfamily had the largest number of species (32 spp.). All the registered localities represent new records to the local fauna, and host plants were identified for nine pentatomid species.

The Heteroptera (true bugs) and its fourth-largest family Pentatomidae (stink bugs) are worldwide distributed groups with higher diversity in the tropics. The pentatomid subfamily Discocephalinae is almost restricted to the Neotropical Region, and it is divided into the tribes Discocephalini and Ochlerini. Eurystethus Mayr, 1864 is placed within Discocephalini and comprises 18 species, 16 out of them classified into two subgenera. Here we describe Eurystethus jo sp. nov., Eurystethus multipunctatus sp. nov., and Eurystethus rufodorsatus sp. nov., all occurring in Brazil, compare them to other species and provide a distribution map.

ABSTRACTMany stinkbugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera) are associated with bacterial symbionts in a posterior region of the midgut. In these stinkbugs, adult females excrete symbiont-containing materials from the anus for transmission of the beneficial symbionts to their offspring. For ensuring the vertical symbiont transmission, a variety of female-specific elaborate traits at the cellular, morphological, developmental, and behavioral levels have been reported from diverse stinkbugs of the families Plataspidae, Urostylididae, Parastrachiidae, etc. Meanwhile, such elaborate female-specific traits for vertical symbiont transmission have been poorly characterized for the largest and economically important stinkbug family Pentatomidae. Here, we investigated the midgut symbiotic system of a pentatomid stinkbug,Plautia splendens. A specific gammaproteobacterial symbiont was consistently present extracellularly in the cavity of numerous crypts arranged in four rows on the midgut fourth section. The symbiont was smeared on the egg surface upon oviposition by adult females, orally acquired by newborn nymphs, and thereby transmitted vertically to the next generation and important for growth and survival of the host insects. We found that, specifically in adult females, several rows of crypts at the posterior end region of the symbiotic midgut were morphologically differentiated and conspicuously enlarged, often discharging the symbiotic bacteria from the crypt cavity to the main tract of the symbiotic midgut. The female-specific enlarged end crypts were also found in other pentatomid stinkbugsPlautia staliandCarbula crassiventris. These results suggest that the enlarged end crypts represent a female-specific specialized morphological trait for vertical symbiont transmission commonly found among stinkbugs of the family Pentatomidae.

Abstract:

The pentatomid bug, Canthecona furcellata Wolff. (Hemiptera : Pentatomidae) is predator of many lepidopterous pests. The nymphal period of C. furcellata was 14.1 days and the adult longevity of male and female were 16.8 and 24.7 days respectively. The nymphal period and adult longevity of Canthecona furcellata is long. So they reduce the population of Clostera fulgurita walk (Lepidoptera : Notodontidae) to its regular presence in poplar nurseries and plantations. The fecundity of female bug of C. furcellata with on an average is 317.6 eggs per female. The egg laying capacity of its bug is also good for minimizing the population of C. fulgurita. The size of eggs, pre-copulation, copulation period, duration of fecundity and sex ratio were also studied.

Abstract:

Nezara viridula Linnaeus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a polyphagous pest of a wide range of economically important crops. Because the control of this species and other pentatomids relies primarily on insecticide application, investigation into the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is warranted. We aimed to investigate the irradiation biology of N. viridula for the potential application of SIT against this pest. Male and female N. viridula were gamma-irradiated at doses between 4 and 28 Gy and mated with both irradiated and nonirradiated conspecifics. Sterility of the resulting eggs followed a dose-response in each case. Irradiated males crossed with untreated females showed higher F1 egg sterility than crosses where the female was irradiated. The greatest F1 egg sterility was observed when both parents were irradiated. There was no obvious dose-response for the longevity of irradiated males, and for the fecundity of nonirradiated females mated with irradiated males. The fecundity of irradiated females appeared to decrease with irradiation dose. These results can be applied to a potential future application of SIT against N. viridula, but predominantly supports the ongoing development of SIT for Halyomorpha halys Stål (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and hemipteran pests in general.

Acrosternum heegeri Fieber, 1861 (Hemiptera: Heteropera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Pentatomini), a Holomediterranean-Turanian shield bug species, is recorded for the first time from Hungary, representing the first known occurrence of the species in Central Europe. The species is illustrated, its geographic distribution is reviewed. The occurrence of A. heegeri in two localities in Budapest, regular records from one of the localities in the years 2015 and 2016, and the finding of an overwintering individual indicate the presence of a stable population in the city; the species is probably already established and it is locally abundant. Its further spread in Europe is expected.

Abstract:

The thelytokous egg parasitoid Ooencyrtus mirus Triapitsyn and Power (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was recovered from brassica plant debris in Pakistan in an effort to find a biological control agent of the invasive bug Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in North America. As the first step in determining the overall host range of this parasitoid, adult females were exposed to the eggs of eight alternate pentatomid host species, two non-pentatomid heteropterans, and two lepidopterans, in choice and no-choice tests. Although O. mirus was more successful on B. hilaris than the other species in terms of the number of the eggs laid, the number of emerged progeny, and the developmental time of the progeny, it was able to reproduce on all of the alternate hosts except for one of the lepidopterans, whose eggs appeared too small for this parasitoid. The results show O. mirus to be a generalist parasitoid species with a preference for B. hilaris. The results also indicate that there is a linear relationship between the mean body length of O. mirus females and the mean host egg weight with an adjusted R 2 of 0.90. The implications of this study on the release of O. mirus for the control of B. hilaris are discussed.

Pentatomoidea is the largest superfamily of Pentatomomorpha; however, the phylogenetic relationships among pentatomoid families have been debated for a long time. In the present study, we gathered the mitogenomes of 55 species from eight common families (Acanthosomatidae, Cydnidae, Dinidoridae, Scutelleridae, Tessaratomidae, Plataspidae, Urostylididae and Pentatomidae), including 20 newly sequenced mitogenomes, and conducted comparative mitogenomic studies with an emphasis on the structures of non-coding regions. Heterogeneity in the base composition, and contrasting evolutionary rates were encountered among the mitogenomes in Pentatomoidea, especially in Urostylididae, which may lead to unstable phylogenetic topologies. When the family Urostylididae is excluded in taxa sampling or the third codon positions of protein coding genes are removed, phylogenetic analyses under site-homogenous models could provide more stable tree topologies. However, the relationships between families remained the same in all PhyloBayes analyses under the site-heterogeneous mixture model CAT + GTR with different datasets and were recovered as (Cydnidae + (((Tessaratomidae + Dinidoridae) + (Plataspidae + Scutelleridae)) + ((Acanthosomatidae + Urostylididae) + Pentatomidae)))). Our study showed that data optimizing strategies after heterogeneity assessments based on denser sampling and the use of site-heterogeneous mixture models are essential for further analysis of the phylogenetic relationships of Pentatomoidea.

The genus Tmetopis Kiritshenko, 1947 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae) and its type species T. chinensis Kiritshenko, 1947, distributed in central and southern China, are redescribed and illustrated. The genus is recognized as the probable sister group of Prionaca Dallas, 1851. The following new subjective synonymies and new combinations are proposed: Tmetopis chinensis Kiritshenko, 1947 = Prionaca hunanensis Lin & Zhang, 1989, syn. nov. = P. jiangxiensis Lin & Zhang, 1989, syn. nov. = P. hubeiensis Zhang, Lin & Zhao, 1990, syn. nov.; Prionaca sikkimensis (Mathew, 1969), comb. nov. (transferred from Degonetus Distant, 1902). Tmetopis (currently in Halyini) and Prionaca (currently in Pentatomini) are both transferred into the tribe Degonetini; the diagnostic characters and relationships of both genera and of the tribe are discussed.

Pentatomidae is one of the largest families within Heteroptera, and it is represented in all zoogeographical regions, although the tropical and subtropical faunas are the most diverse. The field trips carried out in recent years in several localities in Argentina allow to update the distribution of stink bugs in the country. The article considers the issues related to the development of the methods of biological crop protection against the adventive species of pentatomides (Pentatomidae, Hemiptera) – the southern green stink bug Nezara viridula L. 1758. One of the main factors contributing to the significant spread of this multinucleated pest is the lack of effective control systems of this species, in particular, poor knowledge of local entomophages species. A number of the biological peculiarities of a stinkbug has been studied. For the first time in the Russian Federation, infection of the N. viridula eggs with the entomophage Trissolcus basalis Woll. 1858 (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) was determined We found that to control Nezara in such crops as soybeans, tomatoes and tobacco, it is possible to use the Fitoverm-M preparation (active ingredient – aversectin-C, 2 g/l).

Abstract:

Eggs of 14 species within two subfamilies (Edessinae and Pentatominae, tribes Carpocorini, Nezarini, Pentatomini, Procleticini, and one unplaced species) of neotropical pentatomids were studied with scanning electron microscopy, and their external morphology was characterized in detail (chorion surface, operculum, and aero-micropylar processes). Eggs of these species have similar characteristics to those already described for other pentatomids. Most of them are barrelshaped, except in Edessa meditabunda (with spherical eggs) and Odmalea basalis (whose eggs have flattened lateral faces). A “T”-shaped ruptor ovis is present in all studied species; eclosion line at the operculum rim may be visible or not. Average size of eggs (length x width) ranges from 0.9 ± 0.12 x 0.9 ± 0.05 mm (Euschistus picticornis) to 2.1 ± 0.12 x 1.7 ± 0.10 mm (Chinavia erythrocnemis); the number of the aero-micropylar processes ranges from 10 (C. musiva) to 86 (C. obstinata). Chorion surface has a variable aspect: eggs of Euschistus spp., Loxa deducta, and Pallantia macunaima have the spinose chorion type; C. erythrocnemis, C. longicorialis, C. obstinata, C. pengue, and Grazia tincta have a reticulate chorion; C. musiva, O. basalis, and E. meditabunda have a granulated chorion; and Thyanta humilis has a salebrose chorion type. All the species with described eggs in the Edessinae share the same diagnostic features. In Pentatominae, we did not identify shared characters among the species at subfamily or tribe level. Chorion sculpture pattern and aero-micropylar processes shape, as well as number, are diagnostic features at genus level; however, a few species could be identified in the egg stage.

Abstract:

In support of a biological control program in California, USA, against the bagrada bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae), an invasive pest of Asian origin, colonies of two species of Ooencyrtus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Encyrtidae) are maintained using B. hilaris eggs as host. One of them, Ooencyrtus mirus Triapitsyn & Power, sp. nov., is of Pakistani origin. It displays natural preference for bagrada bug eggs and is being evaluated in quarantine as a candidate for classical biological control. The other, Ooencyrtus lucidus Triapitsyn & Ganjisaffar, sp. nov., appears to be native to California, and we believe it switched to B. hilaris from native pentatomid hosts. Both new species are described and illustrated, as is the Old World species Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev), for which a neotype is designated. The presented morphometric evidence as well as mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence data separate Ooencyrtus mirus from O. telenomicida. A lectotype is designated for Ooencyrtus californicus Girault from California, which is morphologically similar to O. lucidus.

Eusarcocoris capitatus Distant (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a pentatomid bug, infests valuable medicinal plant, Ocimum sanctum L. at Saharanpur District in good number. It is a phytosuccivorous bug, which with the help of their piercing and sucking mouth parts drains out sap from the seeds, flowers and leaves of Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum). During this study, it has been observed that E. capitatus occur maximum during March to mid of December. Adults of E. capitatus undergo hibernation during late December to first week of March to avoid unfavorable cold climatic conditions. Maximum population and infestation of this bug have been recorded during July to October when temperature and moisture content are suitable for its development and reproduction. Studies on mode of damage revealed that all the five nymphal instars and adults suck the sap content from all parts of O. sanctum plant. The damaged seeds shrink and loss viability and become unfit for germination. Looking to the medicinal value of Tulsi, control of this bug is urgently needed.

Abstract:

When examining specimens of the Janeirona Distant, 1911 clade of Ochlerini (Discocephalinae) we found males and females of two undescribed species. Though clearly similar to the genera in the Janeirona clade, these two species lack the diagnostic characteristics of any of them. We made a cladistic analysis to verify the placement of the two new species in Discocephalinae. A total of 38 taxa and 60 morphological characters were included in the analysis. Character polarization followed the outgroup comparison method, and the most parsimonious trees were calculated in TNT using an implied weighting approach. The analysis resulted in one most parsimonious tree where the two new species form a monophyletic group within the Ochlerini, sister to Janeirona. We propose Paropsocolis Sampaio & Campos, gen. nov. for the two new species Paropsocolis convergens Sampaio & Campos, sp. nov. and Paropsocolis divergens Sampaio & Campos, sp. nov.. The new genus is recognized by having an inconspicuous labial intercalary segment, metasternum anteriorly carinated, parameres with a basal dish-shaped process and a bifurcated apex, theca with one apical ventral process, endosoma with one dorsal and one ventral processes, laterotergites IX surpassing the mediotergite VIII, and thickening of vaginal intima circular. P. convergens Sampaio & Campos, sp. nov. and P. divergens Sampaio & Campos, sp. nov. are described to Brazil. A distributional map is provided.

Abstract:

The semiochemistry of the common North American pest of crucifers, Murgantia histrionica (Hahn) (the harlequin bug), and two related European species, Eurydema ventrale L. and E. oleraceum L., was investigated. The metathoracic scent glands of these warningly-colored stink bugs (Pentatomidae) are smaller than the scent glands of most cryptically-colored pentatomids, and the secretions from the scent glands of Murgantia and Eurydema species include two heretofore unknown natural products: (2E,62E)-octadienedial and (2E,6E)-octadiene-l,8-diol diacetate. It also was discovered that when harlequin bug adults are squeezed, they expel a frothy fluid from the margins of the prothorax with a distinctive odor due to the presence of 2-sec-butyl-3-methoxypyrazine and 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine. The presence of alkylmethoxyprazines in the expelled fluid of harlequin bugs extends the known distribution of these compounds to include the Heteroptera, and strengthens the argument that this class of pyrazines constitute a universal warning ordor equivalent to the color red as a visual warning signal.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the parasitism behavior of Telenomus podisi Ashmead, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) e Trissolcus urichi Crawford (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) on eggs of Nezara viridula L., Euschistus heros F., Piezodorus guildinii Westwood and Acrosternum aseadum Rolston (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), in no choice and multiple choice experiments. For all parasitoid species, the results demonstrated the existence of a main host species that maximizes the reproductive success. The competitive interactions among the parasitoid species were investigated in experiments of sequential and simultaneous release of different combinations of parasitoid pairs on the hosts N. viridula, E. heros and A. aseadum. Exploitative competition was observed for egg batches at the genus level (Telenomus vs. Trissolcus) and interference competition at the species level (T. basalis vs. T. urichi). Trissolcus urichi was the most aggressive species, interfering with the parasitism of T. basalis. Generally, T. basalis showed an opportunistic behavior trying to parasitise eggs after T. urichi had abandoned the egg batch. The selection of parasitoid species for use in augmentative biological control programs should take into account the diversity of pentatomids present in soybean in addition to the interactions among the different species of parasitoids.

Traps baited with synthetic pheromones for either Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) or Supputius cincticeps (Stäl) were field tested at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, beginning September 7, 1995. No P. nigrispinus were caught but, in September and October, several adult males and females of P. distinctus (Stäl) were caught along with a few adults of S. cincticeps and two females of a tachinid fly parasitoid, Cylindromyia atra Roeder. Chemical analysis of the pheromone gland extract of P. distinctus males indicated that this species produces a pheromone containing the major compounds of P. nigrispinus and S. cincticeps. Therefore, on November 6 a set of traps was baited with the pheromones of both P. nigrispinus and S. cincticeps, and monitored in the field until February 6, 1996. During this second phase of the study, six times more P. distinctus were caught in the combined pheromone treatment than in traps baited only with the P. nigrispinus pheromone. The phenology of these neotropical asopines is like that for P. maculiventris (Say) in temperate North América, although fewer predators and host-seeking parasitoids were caught. Suspected pheromones were also identified for P. rostralis (Stäl) from Goiás, Brazil, and P. sagitta (Fabricius) from Honduras. In addition, the chemistry of other exocrine secretions from these neotropical species was investigated.
