Full textPentecostalism has been officially established in France since the beginning of the 20th century, although we can identify similar movements prior to the 19th century and in previous centuries in various Protestant circles (Luthero-Reformed or Evangelical Protestants). Since 1907, Pentecostalism has been identified in France and often developed from believers or pastoral couples themselves from churches resulting from the Protestant Reformation. If over time, new waves of pastors converted to Pentecostalism coming from Catholicism, several of the executives of the Assemblies of God, the Churches of God, the Apostolic Church had had a Protestant background for decades. There was therefore a transmission or borrowing both in the field of hymnology and ecclesiology, and this at various levels. The relationships and positioning of Pentecostalism within Protestantism was variable and evolving, often depending on interpersonal relationships. Pentecostalism can be understood around three facets (institutionalized, inserted, disseminated). Today it represents between 600,000 and 700,000 believers in France within Protestantism and about 683 million worldwide (Pentecostalism/Charismatism)

Full textPentecostal movement should be thought within the framework of spiritual movements which marked the history of Christendom, particularly in relation with radical reform movements: Methodism and the Holiness movement in the USA. An only spiritualist explanation is therefore unacceptable. In Pentecostal movement, Jesus-Christ is the author of our salvation. But Christ and Spirit are so tied up that the distinction sometimes disappears. We can then talk about a Spirit Christology, since the work of salvation of God in Christ is realized always through the Holy Spirit. The works of the Spirit should be seen. Christology is then functional and really far from ontology. The concepts are unable to explain the mystery of salvation. When it happens to Pentecostal movement to think on its identity, it seems to be nearer to the main line of the reformation, particularly on essential topics like church, sacraments, and ministries

Full textThe pentecostalism, major religious phenomenon of the turning of the 21st century, is considered in this thesis in the Gabonese context (central Africa). Established around the thirties by a French-Swiss dissident pastor of the Evangelic Mission of Paris, this Christianity immediately caused a strong interest for the indigenous people. Organized under the "Church of the Assemblies of God" historical denomination, this pentecostalism is the first French missionary undertaking abroad and the heart of the expansion of this new form of religiosity in central Africa. The thesis apprehends the socio-historical stakes of the transnationalization of this Church, which is in short a minor movement but with spectacular strategies of evangelization. This study also brings up the question of the conversion of many believers to this religion considered as a "sect" by the State, the media and a large majority of the population and the social consequences of this religious turn. The force of the pentecostalism consists in providing to his believers new forms of sociability which enable them to face the unconverted world
Fer, Yannick. "Pentecôtisme en Polynésie française : sociabilité, travail institutionnel et recompositions identitaires." Paris, EHESS, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004EHES0032.
Full textThe rise of Pentecostalism in French Polynesia began during the 1960's, first within the Chinese community, then in most of the Society Islands, in some Tuamotu atolls and in the Marquesas Islands. AQ process of institutional diversification has accompanied the fast growth of conversions : successive scissions gave birth to several Chinese Charismatic Churches and to a transcultural Church - the Assemblies of God of French Polynesia - which is today the main Polynesian Pentecostal Church. Moreover, missionaries of American Assemblies of God and of "Youth with a Mission" contributed to the plurality of Pentecostal expressions, with a net of more or less informal organizations and the circulation of autonomous believers. Analyzing the functioning of the Assembllies of God of French Polynesia, the author specifies the combination of institution and individualization of beliefs within contemporary Pentecostalism. An "invisible" institutional work instills in the converts a "Relational Evangelism" based on a personal communication with God and on evangelization as a way of life. It produces both an "enchanted" loyalty to the institution and a distance from any institutional belonging. This sort of religious socialization meets the expectations of individuals turned away from the traditional structures of social control trying to "get out" on their own. They can find their own "way" through a voluntary movement (you must "go ahead") and by making personal (i. E. E authentic) choices between the diggerent Pentecostal options available

Full textThis Ph. D thesis aims at contributing to a better understanding of the development, at a global scale, of Pentecostal movements. This work is focused on the analysis of the case ofthe Full Gospel Church founded by the pastor Cho Yonggi. The rapid development of this church in South Korea results from the creation and the articulation of specific schemes linked to the construction of a "Korean PentecostaIism". While discussing the concepts of "classic PentecostaIism" and "neo-Pentecostalism", this research permits to understand how this religion has adapted its message to the evolution of the South Korean society and its demands. From its outset, the Church of Cho has based its success on the claim of a particular form of intemationalization. The analysis of its installation in Europe is founded on the study of multi-situated fieldworks. The analysis of the fonctioning of these European parishes raises the question of the priority given to the ethnic or the religious identity. These churches are primarily marked by the affirmation of a national and ethnic identity. The links with their mother-church are built on what they consider as the elements of a form of "Koreanity". In South-East Asia, this Full Gospel Church fonds its proselytism on a model of development presented as specifically "Korean". The transnationalization of this Pentecostal Church is thus constructed out of the image of South Korea and the use of nationally anchored symbols. This peculiar conception of religious issues, across state borders, can thus be considered as a "transnationalism of the national"

Full textHow does one shape oneself as a subject of God in a society that is purportedly « one of the most secularized in the world »? Does God have a power over human beings? What are the mechanics of moral change in the religious field? The research presented here is based on these general questions, using the Swedish Pentecostal milieu as a specific ethnographic case study. The Nordic context offers a heuristic comparative counterpoint for the anthropology of Christianity. It provides the discipline with ethnographic data allowing a critical discussion of the many studies carried out in developing countries. Indeed, Swedish Pentecostals can be observed engaging a conversation with significant forces different than elsewhere. In Sweden, social, political and economic variables are very different and the supernatural agents of customary systems of belief are absent. It is the secular, both as a subjectivation mode and as a more or less imagined « other » from the inside, that becomes the privileged interlocutor and prime alter ego in the shaping of Christian subjectivities. At the intersection of the anthropology of Christianity and moral anthropology, this work deals with the techniques of moral subjectivation, all of them being ways of making God present to the human world. This research questions the ways in which this self-fashioning and world-transformation apparatus, that Pentecostals call the « Work of God », permanently (re)adjusts itself along the porous and unstable boundary between the religious and the secular

Full textIn Reunion Island, pentecostal and charismatic movements have been developing for forty years and their emotional aspect plays a pivotal role in their power of attraction. Encouraging tangible evidence of God’s actions at the expense of dogmas, they contribute to the imprecision of beliefs and the dispersion of religious itineraries, lead to an increase in individualism and encourage a tendency to scission in the Church. Because of all this, they put the church to the test. Nevertheless, an in-depth analysis of these movements in Creole society leads us to question the erosion of institutions, traditions and mediations it relies on. Organising a field survey and conducting interviews has made it possible to highlight several factors which seem to inspire religious experience of an emotional kind.- First, the socio-historical situation of the island, and the religious dynamics that have contributed to the formation of competing pentecostal and charismatic groups which are too different to be treated as part of the same environment.- Then, the groups joined by the faithful, which codify their practices and create their religious « virtuosity »- Finally time, because of which individuals itineraries show different phases of varying intensity. So, religious experience is far from being synonymous exclusively with excitement, immediacy and malleability. Control, socialization and transmission are also important part of it. This study conducted in Reunion Island is at the very heart of this dialectic

Full textOn the religious plane, one of the phenomenon quantitatively the most revealing of the Latin-American’s last quarter of century is made up of the extremely fast development of the Pentecostalism sects, questioning seriously the Catholic’s monopoly established since the sixteenth century. This thesis consists in a qualitative approach of these groups (especially five of them) in the country where the rise of the movement turned out the most important during the last decades : the Guatemala. It's necessary to understand the reasons of the success of these religious communities, to envisage their relationships with the Guatemalan society in perpetual transformation, but also to tackle the study of the conversion's process. In fact, this thesis fits into a general reflexion of the relationships between religion, politics and modernity

Full textThe research addressed in this study examines the question of Pentecostalism, and more precisely the Assemblies of God (AG) in France and its capacity to form disciples of Christ. To this end, we have chosen to study Stanley Hauerwas, a Methodist theologian. Hauerwas has developed his theological reflection with respect to the development of character within the framework of the church. A contextual description of both Hauerwas and Pentecostalism will allow us to become better acquainted with this theologian and discover the different theological and ecclesial issues affecting the AG in France. We will then develop the elements which constitute an ethics of character according to Hauerwas and the main lines ofhis thought and his ecclesiology. Finally, with the various information gathered, we will continue with the pertinence of Hauerwas' thinking and discern possible applications to Pentecostal ecclesiology that would enhance discipleship

Full textThis study explores middle class Pentecostalism in Argentina. A religious movement that has spread predominantly within Latin America's lower classes, Pentecostalism has so far been studied mainly as a lower class religion, whereas its relationship to the middle class has been barely investigated. Endeavoring to fill this void, this study poses the following questions: How does Argentina's middle class relate to Pentecostalism? What form of Pentecostalism do middle class Pentecostals create? This dissertation addresses these questions based on empirical research on the Pentecostal movement in and around Buenos Aires, Argentina. Pentecostalism stands to some degree in tension with the social representations of the Argentinean middle class. Considered a lower class movement showing "inappropriate" characteristics such as speaking in tongues, Pentecostalism does not fit well with the representations of the middle class. It appears as an inappropriate religious practice. When affiliated with this movement, middle class actors overstep to some degree the symbolic boundaries of the middle class and may, in consequence, suffer social tensions with their peers. This raises the question of how these individuals deal with the inappropriateness of their religious belonging. Argentinean middle class Pentecostals employ symbolic boundary work to negotiate the (in-) appropriateness of their religious belonging

The first part is devoted to the bibliographic work about Pentecostalism and the presentation of national contexts. In the second part, the Churches are analysed from three perspectives : the founders' itinerary, the churches' organisation, and their beliefs and practices. These chapters shed light on the media and economical aspects to enable in a third part an analysis of the prosperity message. This analysis is conducted through the last two chapters, one concerned with the message's communication, the other based on its ethnographic description. Finally, this thesis provides an understanding of contemporary Christianity in West Africa, central in the diffusion of this Pentecostal religious trend

Full textThe aim of the project is to analyze the representations and practice of the believers of the evangelical church of Rey de Reyes, on politics, social protest movements and the roll of Christianity in the, "world". The temple of reverend Claudio Freidzon will let us explore the politics dimension related to large religious institutions, such us, evangelical mega-churches, analizing the levels of inner organization and the representations of believers from different positions and responsibilities within the church. Lt is important to tackle the historical genesis and the morphology of the temple considering the changeable systems of government that defines authorities' positions and specific working areas. We will also study the personal process of "reaching the Gospel" and the construction of a spiritual language that creates a new relation with the sacred. Therefore, it is important to explore the evangelical strategies to deal with "social suffering", that is to say, the biographic consequences of structural changes, as a key to comprehend the relation that neo-pentecostalism develops with society. This relationship clearly emerge in the believers opinions about Argentine's social problems and the possibilities to solve them, on their representations about politics, social protest movements and the commitment of the church with a spiritual and social transformations of the country

Full textInstigated by religious leaders, the believers of the Churches and deliverance ministries consider witchcraft as being responsible for all sorts of misfortunes. Nganga, pastors and exorcist priests, have gradually committed to hunt witchcraft, by the means of denunciation of witchcraft, formerly privileged and defended by the prophets, their preferred method. In Cameroon, in a context of religious effervescence, the leaders oppose to this phenomenon an anti-witchcraft violence. Based on conducted surveys from 2010 to 2015, this thesis focuses on the radicalization of anti-witchcraft discourse performed by fundamentalist Pentecostals; rhetoric that generates multiple forms of violence, including family tensions. The fact that people massively follow this interpretation of witchcraft is explained according to its focus on the familiar cultural context. The results are challenging as the action puts emphasis on over-interpreting the facts and phenomenon, whose understanding and explanation remain questionable, as the mindset of the actors is influenced by imaginary witchcraft

Full textThe dynamics of belief among indigenous Guambianos of the Colombian Andes present us with a wide range of symbolic, social as well as religious references and reconstructions. Therefore the examination of the dualist components of this people, goes hand in hand with the study of various strategies for updating and recomposing the forms and content of rituals. Within this constant movement, redefinitions of the fundamental mythological oppositions, as well as relations between ritual and territory, or different systems of belief, including shamanism, witchcraft, Catholicism, Protestantism and Pentecostalism, have become part of this unfinished process. In the center of these permanent transformations of the belief system, the debate over "tradition" and "modernity" occupies much of the reflections of the indigenous, while both shamans and some local Pentecostal pastors define themselves as "tradition guarantors", and declare the "others" as "witches", "literate" or "reformers". In the midst of these thoughts and practices, various ritual forms, social links, creations and symbolic reconstructions are arranged, complemented and contradicted, to give plural responses to the challenges of indigenous belief, ethnic mobility and the man - nature relation

Full textOur study is based on a socio-historical backgraound, which tends to catch and analyze the "politics of identity" that led to the historical creation of the African Pentecostal Charismatic Chruches in France in the mid 1980s. It aims at producing a localized ethnography that is likely to show their developments. A special attention is given to the transnational dynamics, which help to define these churches, as well as to the specific issues of the reworking of the prophetic charisma as a model of legitimization and religious power. The emergence at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s of a new generationof charismatic entrepreneurs, who drew our attention, enable us to defend the thesis of the African prophetic traditions' realignment within the Pentecostal circle. Between rupture and continuity, this realignment is supported by a collective imagination of spiritual reconquest, which not only relaunches the messianic impetus peculiar to the African Christianities, but also enables the migrants to reinterpret the migratory situation by symbolically reversing the domination schemes inherited from the colonial situation. This research is mainly based on two case studies and is definitely linked with a cinematic approach, which enabled us to better integarte these "media-churches", to merge our project and to turn it into a documentary film, which show s its development

It appears that most of them suffer of the so-called "iguana's blood". Thus, we have found the causes of those who are destroying the bodies and who are responsible of "iguana's blood” and how to fight them. The dissertation is about the folk comprehension of disease and how it is divided in the city of Libreville: into “diseases of whites” and “diseases of blacks”. The specialists of misfortune propose some treatments of the body on the religious market in order to achieve healing and prosperity of any kind. The body is seen in Libreville as a hybrid, since the causes of "iguana's blood" and the tools needed to fight it, are found in the representations of both cultures of the postcolonial world

Full textThis thesis analyses the historical formation and the evolution compared of an African Pentecostal Church founded in Ghana by a scottish missionary at the beginning of the years 1950. The missionary expansion of The Church of Pentecost confronted very early the Ghanaian leaders with the other national communities, even nationalist, claiming the division of the power. From three privileged grounds (Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, France), this work highlighted the misunderstandings of missionary collaboration which translate the ambivalent posture of a Church which is thought at the same time "indigenous" and transnational. This ambivalence is found near faithful, which is defined at the same time as "new person" ("born again") and is affirmed more deeply African (and even Ghanaians) than never. The stakes of individual conversion concern here an identity crisis through which one does not become one "new person" but ones affirms oneself in a renewed identity which is an imaginary return to an original identity which is expressed less here by the opening in the world globalized than by the creation of new identity spaces which are as many places of expression of a reaffirmed African identity

This paper presented a discussion on the relationship of social macrostructure Neopentecostalism with the individualization process. Were presented the concepts of individuation process as the process in which the individual produces its own identity and its relationship with the existing social structures, from the logic of contemporary capitalist rationality. In that sense, it was also observed the behavior produced by individuals in the Fountain of Life Church of Goiania church that is representative of neo-Pentecostalism and so became a locus articulator of capitalist rationality in everyday relationships of individuals. It is concluded through interviews and field observations at Fountain of Life Church, that this church has strengthened the pragmatic behavior regarding the relationships of individuals as well as reinforced the desire / consumption as a criterion for validating choices in order to maximize the certainty salvation of the faithful. The process of individualization in this sense becomes restricted to the production of highly self-centered and generalized identity characteristics.

Full textChurches that make up the Evangelical and Pentecostal Protestantism in Benin began to lay their roots in 1944. Starting in the 1990’s, however, Protestantism underwent considerable development thanks to political change in the country in that same year: an evolution from the Marxist-Leninist anti-religious regime to a democratic regime advocating freedom of worship. This development is both quantitative and qualitative. From the quantitative point of view, it occurs at three levels: first at the denominational level, of which 402 new denominations were recorded between 1990 and 2008 (22 per year) compared to 36 between 1944 and 1989 ; then in places of worship, which proliferated, reaching over 3000 in 2002; finally at the membership growth level, as in 2001, Evangelicals and Pentecostals valued their numbers to 35% of the total population. From a qualitative standpoint, by 1990, the Evangelical and Pentecostal churches began to organize themselves became institutionalized. Indeed, constrained in the past by the Marxist-Leninist regime to stay within the Protestant Interfaith Council of Benin (regrouping all the churches but the Roman Catholic Church) chaired by the Methodist Protestant Church President in Benin, they were from this point on specified as a group distinct from others within the Christian landscape, and thus formed evangelical associations or federations such as the Federation of Protestant Churches and Missions of Benin (FEMEB), the Council of Protestant Churches and Evangelicals in Benin (CEPEB), The Association of Evangelical Churches of Benin (AEEB), the Association of Missions, Ministries and Churches of Benin (AMMEB) and the Union of Evangelical Churches and Missions of Benin, all of the former mentioned under the auspices of the Collective of Associations of Evangelical Benin. In order to give adequate training to their ministers, most of whom were previously without pastoral training, Evangelical and Pentecostal churches have opened a few educational institutions that welcome applicants from all churches. Still within the context of this institutionalization, about five years later a radio station named Radio “Maranatha” was established in Cotonou in 1998, and a second station was opened in the town of Parakou (North) in August 2003. Both Radio Maranatha stations (Cotonou and Parakou) are a valuable evangelistic tool for Evangelical and Pentecostal churches in Benin

Full textThis thesis examines the conditions of implementation, dissemination and acclimatization of Protestantism in China from the appearance of the first Protestant missions to the present. It traces, in the long run, the way the communities have become self-governing and have specified the criteria of independence. The most dynamic and promising future is in the house church movement, strongly impregnated with evangelical and Pentecostal theology dating back to the 19th century faith missions, themselves derived from Anglo-Saxon revivals. Each chapter illustrates one of the great moments that have punctuated the history of Chinese Protestantism, with the aim of integrating these periods and their actors in a global dynamic, in order to show that the protestant acculturation was realised in only several decades. The chronological sequences (missions, autonomy process, revivals, communism, creation of a state church, etc.) hastened Protestantism to take roots as a popular religion. Patriarchs of the Chinese church became icons by resisting the communist government repression. The vitality of the house church movement resides in the will of the various networks to harmonize their theology for the purpose of a transnational missionary project

Full textThis dissertation is the result of an immersive work in the universe of Evangelical Pentecostal churches in Brazil, in the city of Recife and in two districts of its metropolitan region, Aguazinha and Loteamento Bonfim. It is based on an ethnography of three Evangelical Pentecostal churches which will offer the reader a fine and detailed description of their internal organization, their evangelizing actions, their dynamics and their deployment strategy. Their in-depth study reflects the dynamics of religion in and outside the temple in urban settings and in everyday life. It also has a historical component that sheds light on the genesis of the Evangelical Pentecostal movement on Brazilian territory as well as its rapid development in space and time. The apprehension of the Evangelical Pentecostal churches made it possible, on the one hand, to identify as closely as possible their socio-religious realities and the practices arising therefrom and, on the other hand, to access the paths of individuals who have adhered to Pentecostal evangelism. The goal is to decipher the issues and complexities of religious adherence and religious practice in everyday life. Whether it is a city church or a neighborhood temple, Pentecostal evangelism tries to meet individual expectations and it inscribes its dynamics as close as possible to individuals and in their daily lives. The analysis carried in this work intends to contribute to a deeper understanding of the evangelical Pentecostal movement in Brazilian society, but also to a deeper understanding of the adherence and religious practice of those who have faith

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to describe the healing rituals happening in Pentecostal circles and to know the reasons that led the sick to turn to a religious setting for healing, precisely in the Celestial Army churches (Église de Dieu Bataillon des Élus). To achieve this, we made participatory observations and organized interviews with the patients and healers so that they could testify their experiences. At first, we tried to situate the Celestial Army (lame Selés) movement among the great moments of Pentecostal, then we considered the healing rituals and finally, we identified the different types of miraculous healings in the Church of (Église de Dieu Bataillon des Élus), such as: healing by gestures, holy oil, leaf bath, prayer, divine anointing, and the laying of hands. The results of this research also enabled us to understand that this new affiliation of the sick to turn to the Celestial Army is not only a matter of faith or geographical proximity with the Church, but also, we must account for the effectiveness of this alternative medicine proposed by the Church of (Église de Dieu Bataillon des Élus) against the often uselessness of conventional medicine for Sicknesses (diseases) in Haiti culturally viewed as "supernatural or natural". There is also the economic aspect, since the healing proposed by the Churches of the Celestial Army is a direct benefit of the favor of God and therefore is completely free. This new elucidation allows us to better understand the claims of this offer and to describe the rituals of Pentecostal healings within the quest for individual wellness among the plurality of complementary therapeutic offerings in Haiti. Keywords: Celestial Army, Rituals, Healings, Natural Sickness, Supernatural Sickness, Alternative Medicine, Pentecostal.

Full textThe Pentecostal movement is gaining great momentum to day in the Ivory Coast. Taking the small town of Jacqueville as an exemple, this thesis aims at an anthropological analysis of the phenomenon. This required first a definition of what are the Pentecostal churches as well as a reflection on the notion of syncretism ; it appears that their charismatic aspect can not simply be understood as an incursion of representations and practice of local traditional systems, this would induce interpretative errors. The specificity of this religious discourse including different systems of representations must be understood in order to make sense of the cosmology it carries. Only them, when the diversity of the degrees of religious commitment which lead to conversion will be understood, will we understand its social incidences. The new representations it generates among the faithful, appear capable to allow certain levels of adaptation to the new economic dimensions present in the country. By redefining the notion of individual and encouraging a break with the traditional lineage system, the Pentecostal theory tends to modify the social relationships of the adepts. However, by declaring diabolical all traditional mystical actions it reaffirms their effectiveness and does not deny the representations they imply. Conversion to Pentecotism, allowing adaptation to modernity, could then be some a means to participate of modernity, relatively speaking of course, but without disenchantment, since it does not remove sense and meaning to terrestrial events

Full textThis PhD is based on a qualitative, empirical and epistemological approach relied on interviews, self-administered questionnaire and ethnographic observation. The analysis of gender relationships and representations of female pastoral labor in the Pentecostal churches is the main topic of this research. We are looking for life stories items and commitment in a pastoral or episcopal female vocation inasmuch to understand gendered dimension and the motives of the young ladies to look for such a well known male profession for which they have been banned for centuries. This religion of the Reborn seems to give an opportunity for climbing the social ladder and awakens the desire for material goods and spiritual prosperity. Many questions are at stake with the female pastoral vocation. How to interpret the ease with which one becomes a pastor (how shall we figure out) the fact that it is very easy to become a pastor in the Democratic Republic of Congo ? How to define the current female role of pastors or bishops ? How to understand the permanent tension between the female vocation, the social stereotypes and the linked body alienation ? Although, they must have leadership roles that have always been the privilege of the male clerics ? Facing the current challenges of a changing society, how do they combine faith, femininity, leadership and professional skills ? What are the roles of pastors and bishops when they belong to the female sex ? Does the hieratic function change in this case ? What are the new dimensions of the religious profession practice ? Are they more concerned with social or family issues ? Do they refer to personal intimacy or to a new dimension of the sacred ? This PhD is trying to answer all these questions. It shows moreover new faces of the religious profession practice through the coming out of female pastors and bishops. It provides new indications regarding the religious changes that have taken place in recent years in Sub- Saharan Africa in general and in DR Congo in particular

Full textThis thesis analyzes healing practices in the Pentecostal churches in beti’s sociocultural context in Yaoundé, particularly in the true Church of God of Cameroon. These Pentecostal churches have been increasingly multiplying across the country since the end of religious restrictions in 1990. This opening corresponds to the period where small businesses activities exploded, even in the religious field, in a situation of economic collapse. Many persons create their own church, with the pretention to break down witchcraft. In the etiological speeches, dreamlike stories emerge as the narrative form preferred by the actors to account for their situation. Witchcraft aetiology reflects the search for well-being, but, more fundamentally, it cannot be understood outside local theories of the word. Dreams details are interesting material that allows us to analyze these theories as well as stakeholders’ expectations. The thesis is organized in seven chapters. The first concerns theoretical and methodological guidelines (chapter 1). Then comes ethnography of contemporary Beti society based on the historical and symbolic influences of the state administration, of schooling and that of Catholic and Protestant Christianity (chapter 2). Nowadays, the rapid expansion of Pentecostalism breaks down the monopoly of the old churches, particularly that of Catholicism in Yaoundé (chapter 3). The dream seems to be an etiological springboard which makes people move, seeking meaning and healing in the Pentecostal churches (Chapter 4). I analyze dream as an ontological medium driving social action. Its interpretations reflects local theories of the world and social transformations. Dreams interpretations fuels the meaning given to the disease (Chapter 5). The family is at the centre of sorcery problems and a space of the creation and the appropriation of dreams’ meaning. I will then try to understand why women are so vulnerable to all sorts of problems in their families and to demonic possession in the Pentecostal churches (Chapter 6). Finally, I will analyze conversion as a healing condition, the meaning and the concrete fruits of healing (Chapter 7).

Full textThe last twenty years of the 20th century were characterised in Cameroon by an unexpected and unexplained phenomenon : the invasion by supposedly spiritual groups dubbed prayer groups or sects. The ensuing sudden confusion rocked peoples’ habit in a country hitherto dominated by traditional Christian Churches introduced by colonisation, Islam and ancient practices. This raises three questions, which are also three working hypotheses: could the economic crisis be responsible for the phenomenon? Or could the State have encouraged the expansion for reasons of political manipulation? Or better still, is the situation a result of the peoples’ reconsideration of their spiritual bearings in such a deviating environment conducive to despair? A sample of the target population was constituted, surveys initiated and conducted among the sample, a significant mass of information collected from semi-directive interviews around the doctrines taught, the functioning of the groups, the motivations and new lifestyle of followers. But beyond this, it is the numerous unspoken comments, the contradictions observed and the differences noted between the theories and practices, which unveil the hidden face of such groups. With economic revival, their enrolments tend to dwindle, while they tend to shift their efforts towards rural areas. What are the consequences of the sect phenomenon on the Cameroonian society? A comparison of evangelisation of the colonial period and now by the “sect” reveals certain similarities no doubt, but above all it brings out the shortcomings and dangerous nature of sects

Full textA new religious “visibility” is gaining momentum in western metropolises. Therefore, it is not absurd to think that if there is indeed a "religious revival", cities are taking center stage in this process. Whereas the main Christian institutions are losing worshippers we can observe the rising of other forms of Christianities, especially the Evangelicals and Pentecostals. These new dynamics are linked partially in processes of religious diversity, consequences of international migrations, which reshape Northern metropolises and create shared spaces for different religious traditions and communities. In this work we study the Evangelical and Pentecostal places of worship, focusing on African and afro-Caribbean communities in the north of the Parisian suburbs and in two districts of Montreal. We would like to show how these communities, through the houses of worship they produce, are contributing towards the geographical reshaping of religion in the city. They elaborate new forms of “visibility”, more plain and diffuse, particularly because they settle in places that are not considered to be religious. Finally, they are part of a process of “reenchantment” of urban spaces. These communities draw new spaces based not on their belonging to a local territory, but according to networks, functioning at both urban and global levels. We would like to stress the capacity of these churches to adapt to the new postindustrial urban conditions, and to redefine the reality of religion in the city, posing new challenges for institutional religious regulations

Full textThis thesis questions the motives and devices that preside over the preference of actors for "spiritual healing" in Côte d'Ivoire. In this perspective, an ethnographic survey was conducted in the prayer camp Jesus Path of Truth, located in Gonzague city south of Abidjan. For many individuals in search of an answer to their misfortune, the prayer camps present themselves as an alternative to the conventional health care system, as the place where not only their body, but also their soul can be treated. In order to investigate the motives underlying the religious conversion to Pentecostalism, interviews were conducted with the "faithful-sick", religious leaders of the camp as well as visitors. We also set out through participant observation to describe the many ritual activities of the camp, the atmosphere that reigns there as well as the forms of sociability that develop there. Our survey shows that "spiritual healing" can be understood as a process of identity transformation whose manifestations are felt in all spheres of the lives of the faithful, and in particular in the intimate dimension of the relationship to oneself, to God. and the environment (community, family). We have also highlighted the importance of ritual devices, and in particular the role of affects and the body in this transformative process. The work of the space of the camp, its materiality, its sensory and relational environment are all dimensions of the ritual practices which favor an intense emotional commitment of the faithful and which participate directly in the "(re)invention of the self". (Kaufman, 2004). To defend this perspective, we proceeded in two stages. In the first part of this thesis, we situate the Pentecostal movement in the Ivorian religious care market. In the second part, we describe and analyze in detail the many liturgical activities offered within the camp, as well as their potential extension outside of it

Full textI base my research on a fairly complete collection of pastor’s Dallière writings that I have assembled and digitized (see the CD-rom), presenting some of the main themes in the theology of Louis Dallière (1897-1976), a pastor in the Reformed church of France. After a biographical sketch of his life, I present his critique of Idealist philosophies and its impact on Protestant theology. I present Louis Dallière's larger objective of establishing a more concrete and confessional ecclesiology, including his rethinking of the practice of baptism, especially infant baptism. Convinced that the era of Christianity was coming to an end, he called for a renewed practice of the immersion of confessing believers. Because he supported the beginnings of Pentecostalism he also believed in a renewal of spiritual charisms within church life. I also explore the larger purpose of his call for a renewed confessing church to prepare for Christ's Second Coming, with his consequent re-appropriation of eschatology without the excesses of some apocalyptic movements. In each of our chapters I place L. Dallière in his ecclesiological and theological context. In my conclusion I explore the relevance of Dallière’s insights for our current theologies

Full text« The Tower of Babel » or rather “cultural community” (Raymond Mbédé), Cameroon offers to this description and analysis an amazing social complexity. This is the case for the principal Christian groups which interact, collaborate and sometimes wonder about their different ways of thinking and social life. The way that the various members of these different groups experience each other is precisely the subject of the present thesis. The author explains why he refers traditional Catholics to the theoretical model known as “orthodoxy” which is highly institutionalized with a strong social regulating system (Jean-Pierre Deconchy); why he considers Pentecotists as related to what has been called “external protestation”, a counter system probably tending towards “re-orthodoxization”; and why he considers the so called charismatic Catholics as related to what has been called “internal protestation” (Joachim Wach). The author also makes an extensive international analysis of several psychosocial studies which impact on themes such as perception, evaluation and intergroup relationships. To evaluate the basis of articulation between this typology and studies in social psychology, the author undertook three experiments, all realized in Cameroon. The first study establishes how members of the three groups perceive social regulations adopted by other groups in view of their own system of regulation (N= 270). The second attempts to understand the occupation of common territorial space and how each of the groups organises the defence of its identity with regard to the danger the other groups represent (N = 900). The third questions how in the three groups members are accessible to the idea of modifying their basic religious beliefs (that they adopt without reservation) in order to adjust to new social contexts (N = 216)

Thereby, the thesis also takes up classical themes from political anthropology proposing a new analysis of the semantic and symbolic exchange between the religious and the political spheres; an analysis intended to contribute to the reflection on political power and the State in contemporary Africa

Full textThe growth of evangelical Protestantism in France is a laboratory for analyzing the effects of globalization on religious identities. Even though their origins can often be traced to the Protestant Reformation in Europe itself, French evangelicals are today part of a world-wide movement where Americans play a leading role. What influence do American evangelicals really exert in France? What is at stake for French evangelicals who associate with their American coreligionists? Our study of evangelical churches in the east of France shows that the United States does indeed exert a certain influence, but it is neither preponderant nor uniform in nature. Most of the time, when French churches develop ties to Americans, they do so in function of their own needs within the French social field. French evangelicals are thus more than just receptors of influence, but social actors in the fullest sense

Full textDaniel Ndoundou (1911-1986), a littleknown Congolese prophet and pastor of Evangelical Church of Congo, ran a popular movement whose impact went far beyond the scope of his church over a period of 38 years. This "1947 Revival" (or nsikumusu), which had started among the students, both pastors and teachers, of Ngouedi's missionary station in the south of Congo Brazzaville is part of the legacy of Kongo Prophetism. At the death of the prophet, the movement was left without a successor which led to its partitioning with the emergence and multiplication of local and anonymous prophetic figures. Until today, they reproduce and enrich the initial prophetic matrix. Their therapeutic and visionary activity is conducted within "specialized groups" within the parishes, under the control of the pastors, but also in private therapeutic centers called bizinga, outside the control of the church. The kilombo choirs where "revealed songs" are interpreted is one of the original features and the identity marker of the movements as are the big "spiritual retreats" attended by thousands of participants. The thesis traces the history of Nsikumsu by showing the key role of these local prophetesses and prophets in the construction of a hybrid religious proposal where the prophetic effervescence and unexpectedness combine with the Protestant doctrinal tradition inherited from missions. Faced with the dynamism of Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches, the prophets of nsikumusu attract new audiences in search of meaning and healing and build an identity link connecting the believers to a prophetic tradition both ancient and renewing
