Abstract:
Nowadays, a lot of interesting and useful and imaginative applications are springing to Android software market. And for guitar fans, some related apps bring great connivence to them, like a guitar tuner can save people from carrying a entity tuner all the time, some apps can simulate a real guitar, and some apps provide some simple lessons allowing people to learn some basic things. But these apps which can teach people, they can't really “monitor ” people, that is, they just give some instructions and hope people would follow them. So my project is to design an app which can detect if users are playing wrong and right real-timely. Guitar chords are always the first for new guitar beginners to learn, and a chord is a set of notes combined together in a regulated way ( get from the music theory having millions of developing ), and 'pitch' is the term for determining if the note different from other notes or noise, so the problem here is to manage the multi-pitch analysis in real time. And it's necessary to know some basics of digital signal processing ( DSP ) because digital signals are always more convenient for computers to analyze compared to analog signals. Then I found an audio processing Java library – TarsosDSP, and try to apply it to my Android project.

Sain, Mohit. "Portable Monitoring and Navigation Control System for Helping Visually Impaired People." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36869.

Full text
Abstract:
Visual Aids for the blind people is an important subject. Apparently visually impaired individuals get impeded by certain hurdles in everyday life. This work proposes an indoor navigation system for visually impaired people. In particular, the goal of this study is to develop a robust, independent and portable aid to assist a user to navigate familiar as well as unfamiliar areas. The algorithm uses the data from Microsoft Xbox Kinect 360 which makes a 3D map of the indoor areas and detects the depth and estimates the relative distance and angle to an obstacle/human. To ensure the accuracy, Kinect tool is enabled with a colour camera to capture real-time details of surroundings which are then processed accordingly. Besides, the developed aid makes the user aware of environmental changes through a Bluetooth enabled headphones used as audio output device. The trials were conducted on six blindfolded volunteers who successfully navigated across various locations in the university campus such as classrooms, hallways, and stairs. Moreover, the user could also track a particular person through output generated from processed images. Hence, the work suggests a significant improvement for existing visual aids which may be very helpful in customisation as well as the adaptability of these devices.

Morris, Gordon Ralph. "People helping people : an assessment of the market towns and related initiatives and the extent to which they addressed rural poverty." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3076.

Full text
Abstract:
This study evaluates, by means of face to face interviews and a postal survey, aspects of the Market Towns Initiative (MTI), the Beacon Towns Programme (BTP), and related programmes of community-led work, the majority of which arose from the British Government’s Rural White Paper of 2000. Particular emphasis is placed on: participants’ experiences, achievements and opinions about the programmes; their understanding of rural poverty; the extent to which they thought that the programmes should have had poverty alleviation as an aim, and to which they believed that the programmes had helped to identify and address rural poverty. A review of the literature relating to rural policy reveals that political interest (and, therefore, policymakers’ interest) in the functions of England’s country – “market” - towns, and their place in the settlement hierarchy, has waxed and waned since the Second World War. During this period the nature of government, in particular the balance between the various tiers, has tilted in favour of central government. Consequently, the powers available to County and District/Borough Councils, if not Town/Parish Councils, have reduced. Central government has increasingly looked to partnerships formed from public, voluntary, and private sector organizations to implement policy. It is governance, therefore, rather than government, that has grown in importance in recent years. The MTI/BT programmes were both designed for implementation by broad-based partnerships of professionals and volunteers. The literature also reveals that the post-war period has seen research into poverty become increasingly nuanced and sophisticated, with definitions moving away from the relatively simple to understand (eg lack of money) to more complicated notions of disadvantage, deprivation, and social exclusion. The factors that affect rural poverty have, since the 1970s, been remarkably constant (eg access to services, affordable housing, low income self-employment). The problems of rural poverty have not been solved. It is argued, based on the results of the data acquired from this research, that community-led development programmes such as the MTI/BTP, have the potential to inform the development of policy and practice relating to community-led development and poverty alleviation, to add to the body of knowledge about rural poverty, and to improve the overall understanding of the functions of England’s small towns. Despite the potential of partnerships to effect change, the important role of local authorities as democratically accountable organizations, and contributors to partnerships’ success and effectiveness, is noted.

Munakash, Kris E. "SOCIAL NETWORKING: CREATING A SOCIETY OF NARCISSISTS OR HELPING PEOPLE REACH SELF-ACTUALIZATION?" CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/273.

Full text
Abstract:
Social networking sites (SNSs) are growing in popularity and diversity. Prior research has shown that SNSs use is correlated with various personality traits including narcissism. To date, no work has examined the association between SNSs use and self-actualization. Given the potential overlap of narcissism and self-actualization, the goal of the present study was to first examine the conceptual overlap of these two intrapersonal characteristics. We then sought to examine the associations between SNSs use, narcissism, and self-actualization with an expectation that self-actualization would mediate the association between SNSs use and narcissism. One thousand six hundred and four adults completed an online survey with questions to assess their demographic traits, SNSs activities, and personality characteristics. Results indicated some overlap between narcissism and self-actualization; but, in general, each was a distinct personality trait. Results also demonstrated that the association between self-actualization and SNSs usage was not significant. Contrary to our prediction, self-actualization did not mediate the association between SNSs activities and narcissism. Finally, the study found that narcissism scores were reportedly higher after using SNSs than they were prior to SNSs use.

Ehmling, Amelia E. "PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS WITHIN MUSIC THERAPY SETTINGS: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY." UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/music_etds/106.

Abstract:
The population of people experiencing homelessness has decreased less than 15% in the last ten years, but issues like mental illness and substance use are rising. There are many misconceptions about race, gender, location and age of people experiencing homelessness. Music therapy research about the homeless population is minimal and often focused on just one setting or treatment location. The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between music therapists and people experiencing homelessness. A survey of 365 music therapists in the United States revealed just under half of working clinicians provide services to people experiencing homelessness. Results from the survey revealed the most common settings where music therapists provided service to people experiencing homelessness were mental health, medical, and school systems. Additionally, the results discussed people experiencing homelessness’ demographic differences in clinician’s experiences versus annual reports. Results are not to be generalized but to be used as a tool to better understand people experiencing homelessness.

Bird, Laura. "Weight management for people with learning disabilities : direct care staff understanding and helping behaviours." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2015. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/13908/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the application of Weiner’s attribution models of helping behaviour to care staff working with overweight people with learning disabilities. Staff were asked to have a client in mind who was significantly overweight and to complete self-reports of their attributions, affect, optimism and willingness to help the person with their weight. The study found that staff rated their clients’ weight as being attributed slightly more to internal factors than external factors, being low in controllability and high in stability. Staff reported low levels of positive and negative emotion but high levels of sympathy, optimism and willingness to help. No associations were found between attributions or affect and willingness to help. Only optimism was associated with willingness to help. The findings did not support the applicability of Weiner’s attribution models to staff supporting overweight people with learning disabilities. These findings contribute to the inconsistent literature on the applicability of Weiner’s model to staff helping in LD services. Future research should clarify whether willingness to help relates to effective health helping strategies and to explore this further in service contexts. The clinical implications for staff training include enhancing staff’s optimism in health change and providing skills in constructively engaging client’s in healthier behaviours.

Warrington, Camille. ""Helping me find my own way" : sexually exploited young people's involvement in decision-making about their care." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/608480.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the role and relevance of the concepts of participation and service user involvement for work with sexually exploited children and young people. The central research questions are: how do young people at risk of, or affected by sexual exploitation, experience their rights to involvement in decision-making processes about their care? What is the meaning and value of the concept of participation from service users’ own perspectives? And what are the gains of involving these young people in decision-making processes about their care? The research involved in-depth qualitative interviews with twenty young service users and ten practitioners. Three theoretical frameworks underpin the study; a constructivist approach to childhood; sociological approaches to agency, and discourses of children’s participation rights. The analysis of data was informed by both narrative and grounded theory approaches. The thesis argues that young people’s perspectives on professional welfare, though rarely recorded or allowed to inform policy and best practice, shed new insight onto the efficacy and limitations of existing child protection practice with adolescents at risk of sexual exploitation. Consideration is given to how young people experience and respond to services, including their decisions about disengaging from or circumventing professional support. The thesis concludes that these demonstrations of agency and power, though often interpreted as deviant, are essentially rational and often protective. Through this lens young people’s agency is recognised as a resource rather than a problem. The thesis concludes by arguing that the ability of support services to protect young people affected by sexual exploitation is contingent on the degree to which they involve young people in decision-making about their care. Rather than standing in opposition to paternalistic approaches to protection, the narratives suggest that participation and empowerment are necessary conditions of a protective service, especially for those considered most marginalized or vulnerable.

Chambers, Val. "Helping at home and informal care : an examination of children's contribution to family life." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2003. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/2799/.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a questionnaire sample of 980 eleven to sixteen year olds and a small number of interviews, this study explores what young people do to help at home. Research carried out over the last decade has provided considerable insight into the lives of children and young people involved in caring for family members who are ill or who experience disabilities. What is less well understood are the pathways for young people’s involvement into caring and the nature of the links between routine helping out at home and caring for a parent with a serious illness or disability. Young people's involvement in informal care causes concern, as such young people often carry a significant burden of both work and responsibility. This study seeks to identify the extent to which young people may be involved in different kinds of responsibilities and to assess the impact this has on their lives. The theoretical foundation for the research draws upon current social theory, focusing especially on the sociology of childhood and the sociology of social problems. The data gathered indicates that the family situation has little effect upon patterns of routine helping out, but significantly influences whether or not young people will become involved in greater levels of home responsibility. The key findings suggest that young people assume responsibility for others in a variety of circumstances and that it is useful to use the concept of a home responsibility continuum when considering young people’s helping behaviour in the home

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a strong push on the federal level to support efforts of faith-based organizations, which provide a variety of social services ranging from literacy improvement efforts to homeless prevention. This thesis sheds light on the current efforts by faith-based homeless service providers in the Baton Rouge area, and examines their role in helping the homeless. This thesis uses existing literature and interviews with the director of The Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless as well others involved with homeless programs in Baton Rouge. This thesis also provides data collected by the ServicePoint HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) which gives a clearer picture of which agencies are providing services in Baton Rouge, and the clients served by these agencies. The efforts of these organizations were particularly critical following Hurricane Katrina, and it is vital that those in the policy arena understand the role of these organizations.

Black, Laura. "Helping people with learning disabilities express anger in socially acceptable ways : the development of a treatment intervention and outcome measures." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13514.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis was the evaluation of a treatment to help people who have a learning disability to develop socially appropriate ways of expressing anger. The inability to cope with anger has prevented some people from living an ordinary life in the community. A cognitive behavioural treatment to help people to cope with anger was developed by Novaco (1983b). The aim of the present studies was to examine whether a modification of the treatment developed by Novaco could prove beneficial for a population who have a learning disability. A set of criteria for improvement were devised to operationalise improvement in terms of clinically, as well as statistically significant change. In study 1, twelve people who have a learning disability were assessed on one self report measure and four measures completed by staff; at baseline, at the end of each stage of treatment and follow up. The subjects received approximately fifty weeks of treatment. As the follow up scores met the majority of the criteria for improvement, it was inferred that the subjects had benefited from treatment. A number of methodological modifications were suggested. In study 2, five subjects were assessed on four self report and three staff completed assessments. The four stages of treatment (self monitoring, information giving, relaxation training and problem solving) lasted 27-37 weeks. Four of the five subjects benefited from treatment as their follow up scores met the criteria for improvement. The results allowed cautious optimism about the efficacy of cognitive behavioural techniques and the use of self report measures for people who have a learning disability, who are verbal. The value of embedding this focussed treatment within a broader therapeutic framework, to encompass a wider range of emotions and strategies to cope with stress was discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
This study describes and evaluates an approach to supporting children at risk of failure to succeed as they transfer to secondary school. The Year 7 intervention project was based on knowledge and evidence from previous research into approaches and concerns regarding secondary school transfer and the historical use of nurture groups in schools. Secondary school transfer has long been identified as a time of risk for vulnerable children in the education system. In 1969 Nisbett and Entwistle concluded from a five year study that over 50% of students presented with identifiable problems in adjusting to secondary school, and in 2006 Atkinson was able to obtain children’s perspectives of the difficulties they faced at transfer. A project was negotiated to provide a support mechanism, based upon a nurture group model, for transfer within one maintained secondary school. This aimed to enable children identified as vulnerable by their primary schools, to access a small group setting for part of their time in Year 7 within which were opportunities for a range of experiences based upon nurture principles, in addition to support for the mainstream-based curriculum. The intervention was evaluated using both academic progress and analysis of subjective accounts of the children and involved school staff and parents, to provide evidence of the impact of this provision upon ten students participating in this intervention. Findings indicated that all involved staff, students and parents considered the intervention worthwhile and beneficial. Most students made progress throughout Year 7, not demonstrating the statistical ‘dip’ that has previously, consistently been evidenced nationally. Whilst the results were promising, this was a small scale study based in one school and there was not a control group against which to compare student progress within the school. There is also the possibility of confirmation bias due to the expectations of staff, and of the “Hawthorne effect” of the novelty of the intervention.

Arutyunyan, Karolina. "Better understanding of the nature of empathy : interaction of empathy, attachment styles, narcissism, dogmatism, anxiety, and emotion regulation in people of helping professions." Thesis, City, University of London, 2018. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/21657/.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study looked at the interaction between four facets of empathy ('empathic concern', 'personal distress', 'perspective taking', 'fantasy'), nine strategies of emotion regulation (ER), three parental styles, and traits of narcissism, dogmatism and anxiety. The main aim of the current work was to explore the variables, thought to relate to empathic reasoning, and to consider how empathy can be facilitated in people of helping professions. The sample of participants was comprised of counselling and clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysis, care workers, and other people of helping professions at various stages of their professional development. A total of 163 females and 53 males took part in the study. The mean age of participants fell in the '44‒49' category box. Data were analysed with three methods of statistical analyses: multiple regression analysis, correlation analysis, and cluster analysis. Results of cluster analysis indicated that participants were classified into three distinct groups. The clusters appeared to represent a gradual transition from the youngest to the oldest participants and an accompanying shift towards emotional resilience, better management of negative affective states, positive recollections of parental dynamics, and increased propensity for empathic relating. Results of regression and correlation analyses indicated that regulation of negative emotions had facilitating effects on empathic capacity, with the exception of 'fantasy', which was positively associated with negative emotionality. Overall, findings indicated that empathic dimensions of 'personal distress' and 'perspective taking' were more susceptible to the influence of ER, narcissism, and anxiety than the remaining aspects of empathic relating, namely 'fantasy' and 'empathic concern'. The field of helping professions could benefit from drawing clear distinctions between dimensions of empathic relating and implementing strategies to facilitate appropriate regulation of emotional fragility in younger trainees.

Abild, Miranda L. "Kin selection and male androphilia : sociocultural influences on the expression of kin-directed altruism." Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, c2012, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/3213.

Full text
Abstract:
The Kin Selection Hypothesis proposes that the genes associated with male androphilia (i.e., sexual attraction/arousal to adult males) may be maintained over evolutionary time if the fitness costs of not reproducing directly are offset by increasing one’s indirect fitness. Theoretically, this could be accomplished by allocating altruism toward kin which would increase the recipient’s ability to survive and reproduce. Evidence for this hypothesis has been garnered through research conducted in Samoa however, no support has been garnered from research conducted in more industrialized cultures (i.e., USA, UK, Japan). In this thesis, I use a Canadian population to examine: (1) the role geographic proximity plays in the expression of androphilic male avuncularity and (2) whether androphilic males direct altruism toward the children of friends who might represent proxies for nieces and nephews in more industrialized cultures. Other sociocultural factors that potentially influence the expression of androphilic male avuncularity are also discussed.

Heinson, Charles. "How do clinical psychologists make sense of their early attachments and their work with older adults?" Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/9490.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: attachment theory provides an account of human behaviour across the lifespan, has a strong theoretical foundation and is clinical applicable. It is particularly relevant to older adults, who are often exposed to a greater number of losses. Despite a growing awareness of increasing life expectancy worldwide, services for older adults in the NHS remains under-resourced. However, increased exposure to death and loss in the work might result in clinical psychologists being more reluctant to choose this specialism and may raise issues about their own early attachment experiences. Therefore, it is important to understand how clinical psychologists approach the complexities of their work in light of their own early attachment experiences. Qualitative research of the lived experiences of clinical psychologists is sparse and to date there are no studies addressing this specific issue. Aims: this is an exploratory study which addresses a gap in the literature. The aims are to capture the early attachment experiences of clinical psychologists specialising in working with older adults. It is hoped that the outcome of the study will shed some light on the characteristics of this under-researched group and how they manage the challenges of the work. Methodology: a semi-structured interview schedule was developed to explore how clinical psychologists make sense of their work with older adults in light of their early attachment experiences. Interviews were carried out with five clinical psychologists working in specialist older adult services. The transcripts of the interviews were then analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: the analysis of the five interviews yielded five main themes – “Making sense of early attachment relationships”, “Developing identity in childhood and adolescence”, “Understanding of decision to work with older adults”, “Work with older adults as both challenging and rewarding” and “The person within the professional”. Each of the main themes and their subthemes were supported by excerpts from narratives of participants experiences. Implications: this study highlighted several research and clinical implications. First, the role of non-parental childhood attachments in the development of internal working models is currently an under-researched area which may provide important insights into resilience factors in the face of childhood adversity. Second, clinical implications suggest that access to older adult work early on in the career of clinical psychologists may increase desirability of working in specialist services. Third, the study supports attachment theory as a useful approach to understanding the work with older adults and as a valuable area for the professional development of clinical psychologists. Finally, systemic working with older adults remains an important part of the work which would benefit from further research in this area.

Desmond, Chris. "The value of other people's health : individual models and motives for helping." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2008. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/65/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis was motivated by a wish to understand the slow response to HIV/AIDS and so seeks to address the questions of why and when people help others. The questions are important, as typically it is others who decide who among those most in need receive help. To narrow the focus to motives of help, the discussions consider the helping of distant others, as typically such actions do not involve material gain to the helper. Related literature exists on charitable behaviour but tends towards a marketing approach. This limits its use in providing specific input regarding motives. The economics literature is far more specific and a review identifies four groups of models. These models have a number of weaknesses, so an alternative is suggested: the balance model, and a responsibility formulation, is proposed for this and existing models, which, it is argued, assist in addressing the questions. Following on from the identification and development of alternative theoretical frameworks, these options are taken through a process of attrition. They are contrasted with evidence and theory from the psychology literature - first on helping and then on harming. This exercise suggests the relative strength of the balance model and the maintenance of a responsible self-image model. Both deal well with explaining how help differs according to context and how individuals might avoid or deliberately misinterpret information. The balance model is used to examine individual helping behaviour, by way of an economic experiment. The model is then expanded to consider the social context, which allows for the consideration of the HIV response. The theoretical discussions and the experimental results suggest that individuals feel a responsibility to help. They can, however, try to avoid information which may prompt such feelings and manipulate themselves to reduce the pressure such feelings place on them to help.

Hazel, Neal. "'A helping hand?' : young people's perceptions of adults' use of physical force in disciplinary relationships with children." Thesis, University of Stirling, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/22861.

Full text
Abstract:
Physical discipline of children is currently a subject of major debate within and beyond the UK. Mainly in relation to children's disciplinary relationships with teachers and parents, this topic is repeatedly the subject of high profile parliamentary and media debates, campaigns, legal cases and international political pressure. However, the perceptions of those in the social position to receive such physical discipline have rarely been included in the legal and political debates or in research studies. When young people's views have been sought it has been on issues and in terms determined by adults. This thesis specifically aims to address this gap in the research literature and to inform the debates on physical discipline by highlighting the issues of particular importance to young people. This is in line with recent legal, political and scientific shifts towards valuing the voices of children on all matters affecting them. Adopting a broadly interpretivist methodological approach, and drawing on the new 'sociology of childhood' paradigm, the study is grounded in the young people's own perceptions. It elicits their views at an abstract level and examines perceptions thematically in relation to their underlying frameworks of reference. The fieldwork involved focused interviews and focus groups with 227 participants aged 11-12 and 14-16 years from schools in central Scotland. In addition, the adult debates and interviews with 25 carers are analysed to further illuminate distinctive features of the young people's perceptions. Themes emanating from the young participants are organised into three dominant areas: purposes and immediate effectiveness of acts of physical force; concerns and contingencies surrounding acts of physical force; and relationships, rights and power. Young participants perceived the use of physical force as legitimate for certain disciplinary purposes. These are grouped in four main categories: to communicate with the child; to teach appropriate behaviour for the future; to restrain or remove the child; and to enforce overall adult control in specific situations. The term 'punishment' was associated by young participants solely with retribution, which they rejected as an illegitimate purpose for physical force. The widely perceived immediate effectiveness of physical discipline was seen as dependent upon the influence of certain contextual conditions, such as the child's personality and peer influence. Perceived effectiveness did not imply support for physical discipline. There was a strong theme of unease with its use but a lack of confidence in finding any alternatives. Contextual concerns about the application and short term negative effects of physical discipline are analysed as containing six dominant themes: whether the acts fulfilled legitimate purposes; avoidance of pain or injury; the extent of adult control of actions; the degree of embarrassment and humiliation; the precise bodily target of force; and the appropriate age of the child. The study found that these reservations led to participants introducing relatively fixed contingencies that physical discipline would have to meet in order for it to be considered acceptable. It is noted that the terms child abuse and violence were reserved by young participants for acts with specific characteristics which mark them as particularly unacceptable. Child abuse referred to acts without a legitimate purpose which focused on the needs of the adult rather than the child. Violence referred to acts in which the adult does not observe an appropriate limit to the force. Concerns about the longer term implications of physical discipline are identified as focused on the risks of: these fixed contingencies being broken by the adult; lasting physical or psychological damage; damage to the disciplinary relationship; and the child copying the behaviour inappropriately. Conversely, it is found that there was a subsidiary theme of concern that children not receiving physical discipline would grow up spoilt and wild with negative implications for wider society. The rights of adults to physically discipline children were assessed by young participants according to perceptions about the particular relationship and the constituents' social roles. Parental rights were presented by participants as exceptional because of a parents responsibility for a child's moral development and peculiar intimacy with a child. Parental delegation of rights to other adults, including teachers, was rejected by young participants because these relationships lack this intimacy. However, the study reveals a theme of resilient frustration at the 'unfairness' of one-sided rights surrounding all physical discipline. Moreover, it is found that young participants analysed acts of physical discipline as manifestations of a power imbalance in the adult-child relationship. Although young participants noted that adults can take advantage of their position, they also presented children as active agents who find strategies to challenge this power imbalance. A substantial body of opinion considered that the risks outweighed the rights of adults and necessitated a legal ban on all physical discipline, although participants were concerned with practical problems which might be caused by a gap between legal and attitudinal change in society. Overall, the study identifies two dominant discourses underlying young participants' perceptions of physical discipline: developmentalism, which portrays childhood as a natural progression towards competency; and rights, which stresses the fixed entitlements and responsibilities for active agents and social actors irrespective of competency. These two discourses are accommodated in the young participants' model of a dynamic power balance between active social actors in the disciplinary relationship. The perceptions of young people presented in this study form a competent and sophisticated interpretation and critique of adults' use of physical discipline. Moreover, the study identifies substantial differences between the young participants' perceptions and the views expressed by the carers interviewed and actors in the wider legal, political and research debates. These differences highlight peculiar features in young people's perceptions. For example, young participants stressed the purpose of physical discipline for moral development, whereas both carers and the adult debates have focused on social development and obedience to adult authority. The contingencies which young participants placed on disciplinary acts were less flexible than carers' across different situations. Young participants' rejection of parental rights to delegate disciplinary rights was not shared by carers or featured in the adult debates. Carers did not share young participants' concerns with the imbalance of rights and power in disciplinary relationships with physical force. The study concludes by underlining the implications for policy, practice and research on physical discipline that are presented by the distinct perspectives of young people.

Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine if people’s sensitivity to the magnitude to which somebody helps depends on how the help is framed. To test this, participants read vignettes about moral agents whose help had one of three different magnitudes: a base level, a medium level (the base level times 5) and a high level (the base level times 10). The moral agents’ help was also framed in one of three ways. They either helped victims, volunteered a number of hours, or donated an amount to charity. To measure the sensitivity, participants rated how likeable they found the agent. It turned out that if the help was framed as helping victims, the participants were not at all sensitive to the different magnitudes of help. That is, an agent was not liked more if they helped a high or medium number of victims than if they helped a low number; neither were they liked more if they helped a high number than if they helped a medium number. However, in the two other types of framing, participants were more sensitive. When help was framed as volunteering a number of hours, participants liked an agent more if they volunteered a medium or high number of hours than if they only volunteered a low number of hours. But they did not like a participant more if they volunteered a high number of hours than if they volunteered a medium number of hours. The same exact pattern was found when framing help as donating to charity. A possible explanation for the result is given in the discussion.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to discuss the experience of using the tradition of Buddha’s thoughts to solve others or subject’s problem. Voluntarily participators who renounce the world as monks were invited from Dharma Drum Mountain in this study. For keeping the original meaning of the tradition, the researcher experienced the phenomenon first and selected the method of ground theory in constructive inquiry paradigm. Analyzing and integrating the data of phenomenon was used to realize the concept and meaning of the participators during the helping process. Results showed that subjects achieved themselves more integrated, relax, stable, and satisfied to more awareness and sensitive situation through using the notion and method of the Buddhists doctrine and provided these methods for peopled who needed it. In the perspective of stabilization of mind, we found a different way to think about the professional helping that conclusion form this research. The helping in the Buddhist doctrine is the perspective of helping to a helper self first that''s different from a traditional therapist''s work, and then helping people themselves become more stabilization for their problem solving. And there are many techniques in the Buddhist doctrine can train our mind to become more stable, that can be an indigenous and cultural way to think about the improving of the psychotherapist’s training. Last, the paradigm and research method that use in this research appear very big restrict to comprehensive the phenomenon of the Buddhist doctrine. That’s still an important finding in the discussion, to understand the paradigm in the tradition of Buddhist doctrine will be the most important way to break through the limitation, and that can be the foundation of further dialogue between the Buddhist doctrine and psychology.

Abstract:
Care for individuals with a severe mental illness has changed dramatically over the past 50 years. Deinstitutionalization gave patients the opportunity for independence and community reintegration, including employment. Employment specialists play an important role in assisting clients with obtaining employment but there has been limited research investigating employers’ perceptions of employment specialists in the hiring process. 76 undergraduate and graduate students participated in a study in which referral source (employment specialist vs. friend) and criminal history (misdemeanor vs. felony) of an applicant recovering from schizophrenia were manipulated. Participants assumed the role of an employer, reviewed an application for a job (which included a brief video of the applicant and his employment specialist/friend), and made a hiring recommendation. Results showed no significant differences in hiring recommendations when the applicant was referred by his employment specialist than when he was referred by his friend, and criminal history of the applicant also did not play a significant role in hiring recommendations. There appeared to be a ceiling effect in that most participants were affirmative in hiring the applicant, although their prior attitudes toward people with mental illness also correlated with their hiring recommendation. Limitations of the study are discussed and directions for future research include: increasing the sample size, sampling professionals in the community and finding ways that are perhaps more ecologically valid and less susceptible to ceiling effects instead of using hypothetical case vignettes.

Disease is an unpredictable and risky event for people. In particular, it is a rare disease caused by genetic defects - muscular dystrophy. Apart from suffering from life-threatening disease, it also faces many challenges. If we can provide and support to patients with the same disease during the illness, the panic and the lack of understanding of the disease will be less, and we can achieve better adaptability and even show extraordinary strength. However, the "Taiwan SMA Families" and the "Taiwan Muscular Dystrophy Association Taiwan Muscular Dystrophy Association" are a group of diseased and diseased patients. The main members of the group are patients and their families, as well as physicians and nurses, workers, physicists, physiotherapists, etc.serve patients to connect resources and improve the quality of life of their patients. The research was conducted using qualitative research methods, supplemented by in-depth interviews and secondary data collection methods. The interviewees included social workers and disease patients of the disease societies. They had a deep understanding of the current of muscular dystrophy in the society, the patients had reached the goal of optimizing the quality of their own quality of life in relation to the assistance provided by the association, and how the association assisted parties in providing resources to provide patients and families with difficulties. The study finds that the Association’s lack of early resources is mainly to solve the most basic needs of the patients in a case-by-case manner. With the connection of services and the abundance of resources for more service use, it also positively links resources and promotes relevant organizations. The approach of the initiative allows the government, the State Health Administration, and others to find out that assistive devices have an important influence on the quality of life of disease patients; also allow society to better understand cognition of rare diseases, break through the previous framework for disease patients, and promote through associations. With the activities of the initiative, the self-worth consciousness of the patients can be better promoted. In addition, patients with muscular dystrophy in the field of employment are also the goals of the association for further assistance and development.

My diploma thesis is called The Palliative Care of Dying People with Intellectual Disabilities in Sheltered Housing. The purpose of the text is to create an overview study of palliative care about dying people with mental disabilities. The reason why I have decided to focus on such a relevant issue is a wide shortage of information in Czech Republic compared to other countries. People with mental disabilities nowadays tend to live longer and the question of palliative care for them is crucial. My thesis is divided into six main sections. In the first section I talk about the ethics dilemma of palliative care. By ethics dilemma I mean problems that are needed to be dealt with in palliative care. One of them is the decision if it is adequate to die in an institution or in a home environment. In this section for instance it is described if it is necessarily to tell the truth the patients about their health conditions. The text is also referring to the medical advances comparing to quality of life of dying people. I also describe what the quality of life means to people and how to reach the highest level of quality of life in palliative care. In the second part of my thesis I describe the social, health and other services which are suitable for dying people and their relatives. Most of the named...

As the constant development of mobile technologies, mobile technologies have affected individual persons on a daily basis. However, mobile systems, which are particularly designed for elderly persons, remain scarce. Only a few empirical studies and surveys emphasize the relationships between the elderly and mobile technologies. Based on the literature, this study was aimed at providing a new mobile system model for the elderly. Prior to the design of this model, this study clarified areas of needs of the elderly as care receivers. This study then developed a model, which integrated mobile services and positioning systems, to assist elderly persons. This study suggested three possible processes to construct this model of care, and identified how this model would aid the elderly instantly, appropriately, and personalized in terms of incidents, daily life, medical treatment, and leisure activities. Finally, this study employed SWOT and five forces analysis to clarify feasible approaches to implement this model of care for the elderly.

The purpose of this study was to explore the helping experiences of the Buddhist priests, and to understand in the view of Dharma, how people and their distress are interpreted and overcame. Participants were invited by purpose sampling. In-depth and semi-structured interviews were conducted to inquire about the participants’ helping experiences. The interviews were transcribed into text and analyzed using the method of hermeneutic phenomenology. Several results were found in this research: (1) Buddhist priests’ perspective of Buddha dharma is associated with their life experiences and professional backgrounds, which all help develop their personal helping attitudes; (2) To interpreted people’s problem and help them dispel suffering, Buddhist priests apply Buddha dharma, including principal and subsidiary cause, cause and effect, impermanence, three periods of life (previous life, this present life and futurity), thought, and realm. The concept of “cause and conditions (connections)” explains the pattern of relationships between people, things and situations, or conditions under which events were grown and achieved. “Cause and effect” explains that in the past, people made the reason that caused the event at present. “Impermanence” explains that everything changes continuously. “Three periods of life” explains that life circulates ceaselessly. “Cause and conditions” and “cause and effect” are also in this context. People’s thoughts influence their attitudes toward suffering. When people are suffered, they are in the “realm”. The meaning of Buddha dharma helping people dispel their problem includes: knowing clearly about their life context; facing tribulations composedly and solve problem positively; restructuring the meaning of suffering; keeping hope of solving problem; and transforming their thoughts and adjusting themselves to life. Finally, according to the discoveries and results, advice for counseling area and further studies was provided.

Research purpose: In view of the fact that the 21st century is the lifelong learning Century. Facing new challenges of the modern era, a vital society would require not only its people to continuously advance in his/her field, but also efficient integration and interactions among its institutions. In this regard, volunteers from charity organizations could play a very important role. The aims of this study were: 1. Through a pilot’s life story about helping people from his growth stage and the aircraft crash rescue experiences to reveal the importance of affective-volition and action in his helping process. 2. From categorized the narrating data hope to offer new perspectives for all volunteers or elder people when devoting their help. Methods: This thesis is the result of a study on my beloved father Mr.Chui-Yu Chiu, a volunteer of Tzu-Chi Foundation, who at advanced age of 77 still actively involves in planning and implementing response programs in the event of emergency flight accidents. By conducting interviews with my father 4 times, I have been able to verbatim, analyze the experiences and set at different stages of his life, and to trace the roots and found out why and how he devote himself to helping others even in the latter stage of his life. Results: From categorized the narrating data we found four meaningful stages from father can represent his construing life in help. The four stages were: Stage 1, nurturing environment could bring personal growth in childhood. Stage 2, mentoring from air force built up personal strength regardless of emergency in adulthood. Stage 3, experiencing of aircraft crash initiated personal courage and participated the comprehensive and integrated programs of rescuing. Stage 4, attends Tzu-Chi Foundation father deliveries the spirit of help continuously including he joined the community and government agencies to set a well developed disaster rescuing system and he is a happy volunteer now. Conclusions: There are the findings from this study: 1. My father’s enthusiasm in helping others, from his own personality, appears to through numerous events that he personally involved in his life. 2. Through these events, to comprehend the constantly unconditionally offering of the concept of my father. 3. Through these experiences, make the individual, the rescuers, to understand the contribution to the society. 4. Through my father’s elderly experiences, to efficiently provide all elder people to devote their time and effort to help others through various social activities. The researcher would like to suggest, based on the findings of this study, that assistance provider programs in our society should begin with proper education of individuals in families, schools and communities, practiced through the systems involving proper work forces, and very importantly, to include participation of volunteers from charity organizations.
