A 3D mesh can be subjected to different types of operations, such as compression, watermarking etc. Such processes lead to geometric distortions compared to the original version. In this context, quantifying the resultant modifications to the original mesh and evaluating the perceptual quality of degraded meshes become a critical issue. The perceptual 3D meshes quality is central in several applications to preserve the visual appearance of these treatments. The used metrics results have to be well correlated to the visual perception of humans. Although there are objective metrics, they do not

Many schizophrenic patients reported that such distortions were reduced or removed early in treatment. Patients who reported visual distortions also tended to report visual hallucinations. It has been shown that adults and children with amblyopia can experience metamorphopsia (perceptual visual distortions). This body of work chronicles the piloting of a novel dichoptic technique to quantitatively map perceptual visual distortions in adults with amblyopia. It was demonstrated that perceptual visual distortions as measured with this method were more severe in strabismic amblyopes, were not homogenous across the visual field, and were highly individual to each amblyope, in common with the findings of other studies using alternative distortion mapping methods. Objective: The perceptual mechanisms underlying the development and maintenance of excessive physical symptom reporting (i.e. 'somatisation') are poorly understood. Research with non-clinical participants suggests that high and low symptom reporters perform differently when detecting somatosensory signals and have different false alarm rates in which the presence of a signal is incorrectly reported when no signal is present. High symptom reporters often incorrectly report the presence of a signal particularly when a stimulus in a different sensory modality is presented. Previous research has s

When I was an art school student, I was trained to pursue the likeness of subjects in all my artworks. This practice-based research explores alternative forms of self-expression in art practice. The exploration starts by questioning the relationship between perceptual devices, artists’ perceptions and artistic production. Most perceptual devices are designed to enhance artists’ sensory capabilities and facilitate the creation of art. Their success is often based on enabling artists to achieve a likeness of the subject drawn or making the creation of artefacts easier. My research focuses on inv

This doctoral thesis is the result of a research effort performed in two fields of speech technology, i.e., speech recognition and mispronunciation detection. Although the two areas are clearly distinguishable, the proposed approaches share a common hypothesis based on psychoacoustic processing of speech signals. The conjecture implies that the human auditory periphery provides a relatively good separation of different sound classes. Hence, it is possible to use recent findings from psychoacoustic perception together with mathematical and computational tools to model the auditory sensitivities

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with maximizing the coding efficiency, random accessibility and visual performance of scalable compressed video. The unifying theme behind this work is the use of finely embedded localized coding structures, which govern the extent to which these goals may be jointly achieved. The first part focuses on scalable volumetric image compression. We investigate 3D transform and coding techniques which exploit inter-slice statistical redundancies without compromising slice accessibility. Our study shows that the motion-compensated temporal discrete wavelet transform (MC-TDWT)

Abstract:
How much does stimulus input shape perception? The common-sense view is that our perceptions are representations of objects and their features and that the stimulus structures the perceptual object. The problem for this view concerns perceptual biases as responsible for distortions and the subjectivity of perceptual experience. These biases are increasingly studied as constitutive factors of brain processes in recent neuroscience. In neural network models the brain is said to cope with the plethora of sensory information by predicting stimulus regularities on the basis of previous experiences.

Abstract:
When the vertex of an occluded angle geometrically belongs to the side of the occluding surface, the occluded angle looks distorted. This characteristic effect of coincidental occlusion—called the Gerbino illusion—is consistent with the phenomenal rounding of angles observed under conditions of symmetrical occlusion. Both effects are robust and appear in static and dynamic displays. The Gerbino illusion differs from distortions observed in Poggendorff-like displays, runs against the tendency to global Prägnanz, and reveals important aspects of amodal completion processes.
