Abstract:
AbstractTracheostomy is a commonly performed surgical procedure in intensive care units (ICUs). Over the past three decades, there has been a substantial body of evidence to suggest percutaneous tracheostomy (PT) is at least as safe as surgical tracheostomy (ST) in the hands of trained clinicians. In most institutions, PT is more readily performed at bedside than ST in the ICU; hence, PT is an attractive alternative to ST in the ICU. Bedside PT generates significant cost savings by eliminating operating room and anesthesia charges. Bronchoscopy is commonly used as a visual aid during PT. Ultra

Abstract:
Background: Percutaneous procedures are now the predominant tracheostomy technique within the critical care setting. Complication rates for various techniques appear to be equivalent to those achieved with surgical tracheostomy. There is a paucity of data when comparing percutaneous procedures, particularly when considering late complications (tracheo-innominate artery fistulae (TIF)), tracheooesophageal fistulae (TOF) and tracheal stenosis (TS). Given the severity of illness and associated mortality in many of these patients the incidence of these complications remains difficult to define. Co

Abstract:
Tracheostomy is the most commonly performed (elective) surgical procedure in critically-ill patients. Compared with translaryngeal intubation, tracheostomy improves patient comfort, and leads to shorter length of intensive care unit and hospital stay. It relieves upper airway obstruction, protects the larynx and upper airway from damage, allows access to the lower airway for secretion removal, and provides a stable airway for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation or oxygenation support. Timing of tracheostomy remains controversial and should be individualized; however, early trac

Management of the unanticipated difficult airway and the obstructed airway is discussed following Difficult Airway Society algorithms. Emergency airway management includes cricothyroidotomy and jet ventilation. Indications for tracheostomy, descriptions of surgical a

Consequently, it covers a broad range of subjects, and its text is divided into five sections. Section 1 is imaging-based. Chapters in Section 1, such as physics, machine setting, and sonoanatomy, provide the foundation that underpins the rest of the book. Section 2 is structure-based. Chapters in Section 2 cover cardiac, lung, abdominal, and vascular anatomy and enable the reader to start scanning in these areas. Section 3 is problem-based. Chap
