The concept of art geography is undergoing a process of revision in light of recent research on exhibition histories. The analysis of major perennial art exhibitions is conducted in relation to the spatial, global structures of social and economic life, or as an aspect of tourism geographies. The geography of art exhibitions entails mapping circulation, analysing the spatial and temporal conditions under which art is presented, and the identifying cultural boundaries in the reception of travelling artworks. This article looks at artistic exchanges in Southeast Asia that are created through person-to-person contact, rather than the circulation of objects, in the form of performance art events, re-enactments, and large travelling exhibitions. It argues that close physical contact and creative collaborations among artists have become a means of writing alternative art histories that rely on oral transmission and live recordings. The creation of networks among artists have helped develop bonds among artists, as well as foster the development of art history in the region.

The second is where Australian art was promoted internationally, which to some extent began in the 1960s with exhibitions such as the 1961 ‘Survey of recent Australian painting’ at the Whitechapel gallery.
