Full textThe growing social recognition of fathers’ contributions children’s development raises interest in better understanding what fosters a more positive paternal experience and greater involvement. This study examines how men's autonomous and controlled motivations to become fathers and those for engaging in childcare tasks can help explain their involvement in childcare tasks and their parental satisfaction. Fathers-to-be (n = 229) completed questionnaires during the third trimester of their partner's pregnancy and two months after the birth of their child. Results suggest that their partner's support of the satisfaction of their three basic psychological needs (3BPN) accounts for fathers’ higher perceived parental efficacy. Together, these two factors account for fathers’ more autonomous motivations for engaging in childcare tasks, which in turn help explain their involvement in childcare tasks and their parental satisfaction. More controlled motivations for engaging in childcare tasks account for less involvement in childcare tasks. Autonomous and controlled motivations to become a father, assessed during pregnancy, are moderately associated with motivations for engaging in childcare tasks 2 months after birth, thus indirectly contributing to fathers’ involvement in childcare tasks and parental satisfaction. However, both autonomous and controlled motivations to become a father contribute directly to explaining fathers’ parental satisfaction. In sum, the reasons why a man becomes a father and participates in childcare,as well as his perception that his partner supports the satisfaction of his 3BPN help understand his involvement with his child after birth and his satisfaction with his parenting experience. The results highlight the need for further research on men's motivations and their experience of fatherhood.

Full textRecent studies about military fathers show that their fatherhood can be a challenging reality. The present research focuses on their resilience facing this reality by answering the following question: "What strategies, perceived as the most effective, are used by military fathers to support father involvement around a prolonged absence? ". In order to answer it, it was necessary to consider two sub-questions beforehand: "What does represent father involvement for military fathers?’’ as well as "What are the challenges faced by the military fathers in order to maintain their father involvement? ". Individual semi-directed interviews with ten Canadian military fathers who had experienced an extended absence (course, deployment, exercise) took place. The results show that participants use cross-cutting strategies, for example spending as much time as possible with their children when they are present or prioritizing their families over their careers. They also use punctual strategies before, during or after a prolonged absence in order to minimize the impact of the challenges encountered at these specific times. According to the conceptualization of father involvement by the “ProsPère” research group, it is possible to target the dimensions of involvement in which the participants become more involved: an interacting father, a provider , and a caring father (Dubeau, Devault and Paquette, 2009). The discussion of the results of this qualitative study makes it possible to affirm that the participants make more efforts to remain involved in the dimensions where they are naturally disadvantaged because of the frequency of their absences. New ideas for intervention and research on military fatherhood are finally presented.

Full textSince 2006, the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) has given Quebec fathers the opportunity to take three to five weeks of paternity leave during the first year after the birth of a child. They can also use the parental weeks (25 to 32 weeks depending on the chosen plan). An exploratory qualitative research about 30 fathers working in information technology (IT) revealed that fathers do not feel entitled to the parental weeks, de facto attributed to the mother. Depending on the room left to him during the leave, the father may feel useless at home or experience a truly complementary partnership. During that time, several fathers said they felt isolated and insecure, especially if the leave was extended beyond the five weeks of the paternity leave. Quebec fathers tend to remain involved in caring for children, even after returning to work, but the inequalities regarding domestic tasks remain. Within the enterprise, taking a paternity leave of three to five weeks is well accepted, but the timing of the leave can be problematic depending on the companies’ schedule. The five weeks seem to have become a new standard in Quebec and are managed as annual vacations, meaning that the employee is rarely replaced. This encourages the father to remain connected and to make compromises regarding the dates of his absence. Fathers who choose to remain at home beyond the paternity leave must make even more compromises with their employer. They are often the first to ask to leave for such a long period and can become an inspiration for other employees. When they return to work, it can be difficult for them to follow the same rhythm as before and to be present at the same hours as the others, especially when it comes to overtime. Fathers tend to be absent more often as parental responsibilities require them to leave earlier, and some have testified that they have lost a promotion or felt they had been downgraded. Some left their jobs to better articulate the work with their family situation. In Quebec today, the father is not interchangeable with the mother. He’s still seeking his place, between the impression of being useless and that of being an essential partner. But the figure of Dad 2.0 has become an essential part of Quebec’s 21st century families.

Full textThis thesis focuses on issues related to the conjugal experience of stepfathers and mothers-in-law. Although the literature on family transitions is relatively rich and diverse,there appears to be little research into the perception of step-parents in relation to their conjugal experience; how does the feeling of love form in their relationship, how do they construct conjugal boundaries and family rules within stepfamilies’ sub-systems, what impacts do communication skills and role sharing have on their conjugal experience, and are there any difference or similarity between the experience of stepfathers and stepmothers? To address these shortcomings, this study used a qualitative methodology to investigate the stepparents’ subjective experience of their conjugal relations inside a stepfamily’s structure.Six men and six women living or having lived in a blended family underwent a semistructured individual interview. The results suggest that conjugal experience is intrinsically linked to the way boundaries between the different subsystems of a blended family are determined. For instance, the conjugal experience is more positive for step-parents whose conjugal boundaries are defined. These stepparents maintain a stronger feeling of love, feel more legitimacy in the role they play within the family and put in place strategies that allow them to better regulate their expectations about the relationship they build with all family members.Finally, the results suggest that the conjugal experience of stepfathers and stepmothers is similar in terms of gender.

Full textThe overall goal of this thesis is to understand immigrant fathers' acculturation strategies and their influences on their engagement and their children's social-emotional development. Specifically, it aims to: describe the acculturation strategies of immigrant fathers and explore the links between these strategies and the immigration context; clarify the relationship between acculturation strategies and different modalities of immigrant fathers' involvement; test the indirect relationship between immigrant fathers' acculturation strategies and the child's social-emotional development through paternal engagement in the context of migration. The well-being of the family and of the child in particular occupies an important place in our societies. Factors and events that may affect construction and family dynamics are now concerns for the research community. For a long time, the mother-child relationship and the role of the mother in the early development of the child have been the subject of studies and observations. The child's attachment to the mother was then presented as a logic and a norm, while the father's contribution was minimal or revealed much later. However, more studies on the engagement and place of the father in the development of the young child are seeing the day. These studies reveal the positive influence of an early and assiduous participation of the father on the development of the child. Therefore, in addition to the mother, the father is a major attachment figure for the child when he is present in the child's life. However, research that has highlighted the importance of paternal engagement or commitment has had very little interest in fathers in immigration situation. Yet, this engagement can influence the father-child relationship. Through a quantitative research design, we interviewed fathers, but also mothers (especially for the development of the child) from immigrant backgrounds. We also collected information on the socio-emotional development of their children. In total, one hundred and forty-five people (86 fathers and 45 mothers) completed various questionnaires. Most of participants come from sub-Saharan Africa (80%), followed by North Africa and Latin America. They have been living in Quebec for an average of 6 years, most of them are employed and have an annual family income of $40,000 or more. The analyses that follow focus on fathers and children. Our findings indicate that immigrant fathers in our sample have high averages both in their orientation towards their culture of origin and in their orientation towards Quebec society in terms of acculturation attitudes. Per our findings, immigrant fathers reconcile the values of their country of origin well with those of the Quebec host society. The analyses also show that fathers use different acculturation strategies (i.e. assimilation, integration, marginalization, separation), and that these strategies change depending on certain context and immigration variables (e.g. fathers' age, employment status, family income and immigration status). Moreover, acculturation strategies (attitudes and acculturation profiles) which do not remain static have an impact on paternal engagement. Thus, fathers who are oriented towards Quebec culture or who have a profile of integration or assimilation are more engaged with their children. Finally, structural equation modeling analyses show that beyond this commitment, the acculturation strategies of the father influence the socio-emotional development of the child. These actions take place in two ways. On the one hand, the attitudes and acculturation profiles of the father directly affect the socioemotional development of the child. In this situation, when the father orients himself towards Quebec culture, the child shows less anxiety and aggression while the father's orientation towards his culture of origin causes anxiety in the latter. In fact, in circumstances where the father encounters difficulties and has difficulty accepting the values of the host society, he may experience stress and anxiety that he transmits, in one way or another, to his child. On the other hand, acculturation strategies are indirectly involved in the child's socioemotional development. This observation is mostly verified for social competence. The various analyses indicate that to the extent that the father is oriented towards Quebec culture or has an integration profile, he is engaged and his child flourishes in terms of social acquisitions. In these circumstances, paternal commitment acts as a mediator in the relationship between acculturation strategies and the socio-emotional development of the child, especially the formation of his social skills. These findings are discussed in light of previous research on immigration, paternal engagement, socio-emotional development and the needs of the child. The contributions and limitations of this study as well as the avenues for future work are also discussed.

Full textL’engouement de la recherche pour la paternité, observé depuis les années 80, a permis d’identifier une liste de variables considérées comme déterminant l’engagement paternel. Toutefois, peu d’efforts ont été faits pour comprendre le processus par lequel les hommes deviennent pères et comment ces différents facteurs interagissent pour mener aux comportements des pères. À cet égard, la théorie du comportement planifié (Ajzen, 1991), postulant que le comportement est déterminé par l’intention d’un individu, elle-même déterminée par les attitudes envers le comportement, la norme subjective et la perception de contrôle sur le comportement, constitue une avenue intéressante et peu étudiée afin d’expliquer les comportements d’engagement paternel de nouveaux pères. Ainsi, 300 couples hétérosexuels attendant leur premier enfant ont complété des questionnaires pré et postnataux évaluant les différentes composantes de la théorie du comportement planifié. Les résultats suggèrent que la présence de croyances d’essentialisme biologique chez les hommes et leur perception que des éléments de leur environnement limitent leur engagement sont associés négativement avec leur intention de participer aux tâches de soin. Il apparait également que les intentions des hommes à être engagés auprès de leur enfant, formulées avant la naissance de leur premier enfant, permettent de prédire leurs comportements postnataux. De plus, des variables postnatales maternelles sont liées à la participation des pères aux tâches de soin, plus particulièrement les attitudes d’essentialisme biologique des mères, qui de surcroît interagissent avec l’intention prénatale des pères dans la prédiction des comportements paternels. Ainsi, de plus faibles croyances essentialistes chez les mères sont associées à une plus grande participation des pères, particulièrement dans le contexte où ceux-ci avaient de plus faibles intentions prénatales. Il est donc important de considérer davantage les croyances et attentes des hommes avant qu’ils deviennent pères et l’interaction de ces caractéristiques avec celles des mères, afin de mieux comprendre les comportements d’engagement paternel dans des familles biparentales. Des interventions visant à réfuter les croyances essentialistes de futurs ou nouveaux parents quant aux compétences des hommes et des femmes s’avèrent une piste prometteuse pour favoriser un plus grand engagement paternel.
Growing research interest in fatherhood, since the 1980s, has helped identify several potential determinants of father involvement. However, few attempts have been made to understand the process through which men become fathers, and how different factors interact to predict father involvement. In this respect, the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991), which postulates that an individual’s behavior is determined by his intention with regards to the target behavior, itself predicted by his attitudes, perceived norms and behavioral control over this behavior, constitutes an interesting and novel way of explaining the involvement of new fathers in childcare. With this premise, 300 heterosexual couples expecting their first child completed prenatal and postnatal questionnaires assessing the different components of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Results suggest that the more future fathers endorse biological essentialist beliefs and perceive obstacles to their involvement in their environment, the less they intend to participate in childcare. Additionally, it appears that fathers’ intentions to be involved in childcare tasks, prior to the birth of their first child, contribute to the prediction of their postnatal behaviors. Moreover, mothers’ postnatal variables are also associated with fathers’ involvement behaviors, particularly mothers’ biological essentialist beliefs, which also interact significantly with fathers’ prenatal intentions to predict father involvement. Weaker essentialist beliefs in mothers are associated with greater father involvement, particularly for fathers with lower prenatal intentions regarding childcare involvement. To understand fathers’ involvement behaviors in two-parent families, it is thus necessary to take into account men’s prenatal beliefs and expectations as well as their interaction with those of mothers. Future parents’ essentialist beliefs regarding the childcare competence of men and women appears to be a promising intervention target to facilitate greater paternal involvement.

Des entrevues semi-dirigées ont été faites pour aller chercher des réponses à mes questionnements de recherche. Ces hommes exposaient leur perception par rapport aux différences culturelles auxquelles ils sont confrontés. Je cherche à comprendre comment ces pères se redéfinissent dans un contexte d'immigration, en bref : quelles sont les influences culturelles dans les comportements adoptés dans les rôles de la vie quotidienne.

Full textNowadays, a record number of households are runned by single fathers not only in France but also in most of western societies. Our research aims to explore how single fathers experience the domestic sphere, a traditionally feminized field, while accomplishing their role of fathers. These fathers are living a situation of cumulating roles: the role of the father and the role of the mother. We identify three main categories of single fathers depending on their strategies to copy and/or delegate the role of the mother. Household duties such as shopping, cooking and housekeeping in addition to the nurturing role are experienced by many of the respondents as constructing elements of their fatherhood. Moreover, we identify the role of the marketplace and consumption in building a new family, particularly by creating new relationships between single fathers and their children
