Full textBody dissatisfaction, defined as the difference between the perceived and the desired body (Cash, 2002), has been highlighted as a risk factor of numerous psychopathological disorders and symptoms. Thus, one of the priorities in body dissatisfaction research is to identify psychological processes involved in the development and maintenance of body dissatisfaction. The overview of the literature about body dissatisfaction, rumination, perfectionism, and self-regulation revealed several interesting results and also a lack of information in this field. Most of the research on the role of these processes in body dissatisfaction is cross-sectional. Thus, it has been brought forward that more research is needed to examine the causal risk factors involved in body dissatisfaction (Watson et al., 2016). The objectives of this research were to develop and test several measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaire, implicit and behavioural tasks) and protocols (i.e., longitudinal design, experimental inductions) to explore the causal relationships between perfectionism, rumination, self-regulation and body dissatisfaction, while taking into account gender differences. The results suggest vicious circles between body dissatisfaction, rumination, and perfectionism, and differences between men and women on the relationships between those processes and body dissatisfaction. More, our results about implicit and behavioural measurement instruments of perfectionism as alternative to the classical self-report measures are encouraging. A model presenting how all these vicious circles could contribute to body dissatisfaction is proposed and futures directions are explored in the general discussion

Full textMoral liberalism, which is intimately linked to political liberalism, consists in trying to define the principles of a minimal public morality which makes moral disagreements on conceptions of Good possible. The only way it can have any meaning is by being radically anti-perfectionist, that is, by refusing to contain in itself the least element akin to any conception of Good. The former foundations of liberalism based on the concepts of autonomy and individualism have therefore become inappropriate in justifying the ideal moral neutrality of the public sphere. Neither autonomy nor individualism belong to the uncontroversial values sought after by contemporary anti-perfectionist liberals. The justification and application of the two fundamental principles of anti-perfectionist liberalism, that of to do no harm to others and that of equal respect for each human being, depend, on the one hand, on our moral beliefs being rooted in the liberal and democratic political culture that has developed over the past two centuries and, on the other, on the recognition of the heterogeneity of the sources of our moral deliberations which are completely fallible as soon as they abandon their fucntion of founding those same principles through the understanding internal to the liberal community. Anti-perfectionist moral liberalism is thus opposed to all moral relativism while, at the same time, rejecting the idea that an absolute and infallible moral principle capable of solving all our moral dilemmas could be discovered. All it has to offer is a public morality which does not seek to answer all the questionings which haunt our personal moral experience
Goursat, Juliette. "Mises en « je » : autobiographie et film documentaire." Paris, EHESS, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHES0056.
Full textTaking into account the fact that, in spite of its relatively recent expansion, very few books have offered an overall study on filmic autobiography, this thesis is dedicated to the analysis of films in which a convergence between documentary and autobiography can be observed, in order to delimit a coherent corpus, we will focus our attention on films that record filmmakers' lives, place them in the fore-ground, privilege sync-sound conversations, encourage "documentarizing reading," and inscribe themselves in a tradition linked to direct cinema and cinema-vcritc. What do autobiography and documentary reveal about each other? and about personal identity? How does the interaction of these two ideas lead to their reinvention? After tracing the theoretical and practical beginnings of autobiographical documentaries, my thesis examines a large body of films (by Agnès Varda, Ross McElwee, Dominique Cabrera, Ed Pincus, David Perlov, Alain Cavalier, Jonathan Caouette, Johan van der Keuken. . . ) from four angles: enunciation, narration, rhetoric, and ethics. All these films appear as a field of fertile tensions, laboratories in which filmmakers trouble documentary as a practice and set of conventions, criticize their lives and the institutions that underpin them, link ways of viewing and being, and promote a "care of the self” (Foucault) and an ipseite based on the model of "the promise kept" (Ricoeur), striving for transformation of oneself and others
Samhale, Khalid. "Le Soi quantifié et l'engagement dans l'utilisation des objets connectés pour le sport." Thesis, Lille 1, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LIL1A019.
Full textThe technology of the Internet of Things (IoT) has changed our daily life, almost all the objects around us are connected especially in the field of sport marked by a great need to measure carefully the achievements. The success of this technology of connected objects for the sport knows some obstacles like the rate of abandonment of use, IDATE (2017) estimates that the abandonment rate is 50% after eighteen months of use of connected objects, this is one of the major issues we discuss in this research, so we are working on the factors that encourage the athletic users engagement of which will allow them to retain and moderate the high abandonment rate. In this study, we analyze the determinants of engagement in the use of connected objects specific to the field of sport. We have tried throughout the literature review to understand the specificities of this technology, to treat the concept of engagement and also to analyze the different theoretical approaches that are interested in the use and adoption of new technologies, this step allowed us to build our theoretical model and to emit our hypotheses. The verification of these hypotheses was carried out using a survey intended for the IoT users. The results of our study therefore advance the need to give more importance to the added value of connected objects marketed to satisfy the specific needs of athletes especially safety, self-development and the pursuit of perfectionism

Full textThis dissertation explores the role of sport in the struggles for dignity, equality and rights of the African American communities of Washington, D. C. , and Baltimore between the 1890s and the 1960s. Its aim is to explain how athletics constituted a means of political action seeking to counter racial prejudices on the "natural" inferiority of the black body which legitimized its social oppression. The public display of the dignity of the black body functioned as a claim of symbolic equality, compensating for the relative privation of speech endured by African Americans as they were exduded from the civic community. Since the end of Reconstruction, African American elites have promoted sport as a central element of the perfectionist tactics of "racial uplift" in order to integrate the national community. The main objective of this study is thus to establish how African American political struggles have had the body as place and stake, using sport as a performative means for uplifting individuals' bodies and achieving collective emancipation

Full textCareer researchers are increasingly recognizing the need to expand their focus to advance the field. One question still needs to be addressed by career researchers is what leads to subjective career success ? In addition, organizational career scholars have largely neglected the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions that might affect one’s subjective career success. Accordingly, this dissertation aims to answer this question with a quantitative study of business professionals working in various industries in France. To do so, we conducted three studies to examine the unaddressed and unexplored factors that might enhance individuals subjective career success. In study 1, we examined the relationship between protean and boundaryless career orientations and subjective career success, as mediated by employee job crafting. In study 2, we examined the relationship between career adaptability resources and subjective career success, as moderated by lone wolf personality and positive perfectionism and mediated by employee job crafting. In study 3, we examined the relationship between motivational career resources and subjective career success, as mediated by employee job crafting. Across three studies, we found general support for our theoretical predictions, which contribute to the careers, personality, and job crafting literatures and provide practical implications for both the manager and the employee

Full textRecent research suggests that some components of perfectionism can be detrimental to psychosocial well-being, but others can be positive to adjustment. The present investigation was designed to compare the prevalence of negative and positive components among gifted boys and girls. Two dimensions of perfectionism, Self-oriented and Socially-prescribed Perfectionism, were examined in a sample of 49 children between 7 and 11 years old. Contrary to our predictions, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of both dimensions between boys and girls. Implications for future studies are discussed.

Full textPelchat, Patrick. "La famille et la pensée émersonienne dans le cinéma de Paul Thomas Anderson." Thèse, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/18747.
Full textThis research focuses on the family in the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. His representation is a reflection of tensions and conflicts that are found in contemporary American family, that sociologists such as Weber, Bateson, Becker and Sombart allowed us to analyze the basis and the (dys) function. The director places the family at the center of his films, showing either the failure or the surrogate reconstitution of a family unit. While rewarding it, Anderson also shows the flaws of it. The dichotomy that arises from the contrast between family happiness and personal success, economic or social, reveals a multitude of family issues that Anderson’s cinema seems to expose by failure of the patriarchal model. Now, is the american family, in Anderson’s movies, suffered economic aspirations and individual success of men, thereby causing it to malfunction, or is it rather the main reason that prompts nonconformist to seek solutions in alternative communities? Our hypothesis is that moral perfectionism and his injunction of non-compliance, which supports individual project, conflicts with the pursuit of family happiness. This oscillation between the personal and the collective recall the ideas developed by Ralph Waldo Emerson on the self-reliance and on the construction of common trust. We will look more specifically at andersoniens characters that are part of a family or community in order to lay the foundations for an emancipatory transformation.

Full textCôté-Boudreau, Frédéric. "Le concept d'autonomie s'applique-t-il aux animaux?" Thèse, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/10300.
Full textIn this M.A. research, I try to understand why nonhuman animals are not considered autonomous in the contemporary liberal theories. To do this, I analyze two main conceptions of autonomy, autonomy as moral agency and hierarchical autonomy (as the capacity to act according to second-order desires), and I argue that these conceptions both fail to justify the respect of personal choices even for human agents. I suggest that these two conceptions of autonomy lead to perfectionist and paternalist conclusions, although this is inconsistent with their function. I then review a few alternative versions of autonomy that do not rely on possessing moral or rational faculties, before sketching a new conception of autonomy that could answer the different issues raised during this research and potentially recognize the autonomy of nonhuman animals.
