Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of an employee’s consideration of future consequences (CFCs) in predicting employee task performance and its situational contexts (i.e. organizational support and supervisor support) based on trait activation theory. Design/methodology/approach Using a cross-sectional field study design, data were collected from 189 employees and their immediate supervisors in South Korea. Findings Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that employees’ CFC has a positive effect on their task performance. Furthermore, this study investigated whether this relationship would be varied by relevant situational factors. Consistent with the hypotheses, the relevance of CFC to employees’ task performance would be stronger when they perceive low levels of organizational support based on trait activation theory. Practical implications The findings suggest the importance of employees’ CFC on task performance. Also, organizations should pay more attention to the way of compensating for employees with low levels of CFC by fostering supportive environment. Originality/value Although researchers have been examined long-term perspectives in the business field, a few studies have examined its effect at the individual level. This paper identified not only the main effect of CFC on employee task performance but also the moderating role of organizational support on the aforementioned relationship.

Abstract:
Will, purpose, and volition have long been viewed as either causes of behavior or of no direct consequence to behavior. In this essay, volition affects a flexible direct coupling of participant to task, modulating the degrees of freedom for kinematics in action, a point of view first introduced in theories of motor coordination. The consequence is an explanation consistent with present knowledge about involuntary and voluntary sources of control in human performance, and also the changes of the body expressed in aging and dynamical disease. Specifically, this view explains how tradeoffs between sources of overly regular versus overly random dynamics change the structure of variability in repeated measurements of voluntary performance.

Abstract:
This study extends previous research on the expectancy construct of the expectancy-value theory of motivation developed by Pintrich. In addition to value and expectancy for success, it is proposed that people take into account how much effort is required to complete a task. A 2 × 2 × 2 analysis of variance design was used to investigate the relationship of Difficulty, Consequence, and Required Effort on the willingness of participants to complete a task. The dependent variable was the score obtained from completing statistical problems that varied in difficulty and effort required to complete. 128 students at a public university were participants. Analysis showed significant main effects and an interaction for difficulty and required effort, but no main effect for consequence. Results are discussed in terms of creating optimal motivation for classroom tasks and for both classroom and standardized examinations. Implications for students in subject pools are also discussed.

Abstract:
Nowadays, customer relationship management is an important marketing strategy to retain the customer. Many literatures proved that by maintaining a good relationship with the customers, they will come back to the premise. This empirical paper investigates the antecedent factors of customer relationship management performance and its impact on electronic banking adoption. This is subjected to a thorough validation process from a valid sample of 325 electronic banking customers in Malaysia via exploratory factor analysis for validity and reliability assurance. Seventy-four original items was tested in this preliminary analysis. The results indicate 39 constructs measuring social value, ease of use, delivery performance, economic value, usefulness, privacy; customer relationship management performance and electronic banking adoption satisfied the rigorous validation. This paper will end with the completed original hypothesized model ready for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Structural equation modeling was used since it has the ability to examine a series of dependence relationships simultaneously.

Abstract:
Purpose – Previous research demonstrates the damaging effects of hostile sexism enacted towards women in the workplace. However, there is less research on the consequences of benevolent sexism: a subjectively positive form of discrimination. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing from ambivalent sexism theory, the authors first utilized an experimental methodology in which benevolent and hostile sexism were interpersonally enacted toward both male and female participants. Findings – Results suggested that benevolent sexism negatively impacted participants' self-efficacy in mixed-sex interactions. Extending these findings, the results of a second field study clarify self-efficacy as a mediating mechanism in the relationship between benevolent sexism and workplace performance. Originality/value – Finally, benevolent sexism contributed incremental prediction of performance above and beyond incivility, further illustrating the detrimental consequences of benevolently sexist attitudes towards women in the workplace.

Abstract:

Performance measurement is the buzzword in today’s business world. This mechanism has become an essential tool in online marketplace to identify victors and losers. Apparently, virtual stores are searching for decision-oriented performance measures to aid them in addition to identifying strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities make sound strategic and operational decisions as they compete with their peers. In that paradigm this study attempt to measure performance of virtual stores using decision-making associated variables sternly to evaluate the impact of the variables or indicators on strategic and operational decisions.

To achieve this purpose, the study used an evaluation framework to identify drivers which have a significant and positive effect on strategic and operational decisions. The study surveyed 100 internet users in Goteborg of a randomly selected four virtual store (EBay Amazon.com, Yahoo and Buy.com).

The results identified three major dimensions: website, product and services and promotion. These dimensions share many common aspects with decision making determinants derived within the context of online market industry. Conversely, these dimensions have unique characteristics inherent in the online marketing environment. The study revealed a significantly positive relationship between the variables on operational and strategic decisions. The conclusion is that the fact that performance measures are assessed to firms’ business activities both operational and strategic decisions initiatives begin with defining users’ needs and preferences, and their related performance variable. If the virtual store understands what dimensions users use to judge quality, they can take appropriate actions to monitor and enhance performance on those dimensions and remedy service failures.

Sholihin, Mahfud. "Antecedents and consequences of fairness in performance evaluation processes." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/4309.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis are: (1) to investigate the antecedents and consequences of fairness of performance evaluation processes (procedural fairness) in the context of performance measurement, evaluation, and reward systems; and (2) to investigate the behavioural effects of reliance on multiple performance measures (RMPM) in evaluating subordinates' performance. In relation to the first objective, it examines whether managers' perceptions of procedural fairness are influenced by the form (financial or nonfinancial) of performance measures used to evaluate performance, and by goal-related variables such as participation in setting performance targets, the goal-attainment-reward link, and the specificity of goals to be achieved by managers. With regard to the consequences of procedural fairness, it examines the effects of procedural fairness on job satisfaction, performance, organisational commitment, and goal commitment, and also examines whether any such associations are direct or indirect. In relation to the second objective, it examines whether RMPM affects managerial performance or whether the effect is contingent on goal difficulty and goal specificity. To address these objectives, this thesis draws on organisational justice theory and goal theory and employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data are collected using a questionnaire survey sent to managers in four organisations and qualitative data are gathered by means of interviews and focus group discussions within the organisations. The results indicate that procedural fairness is affected by participation in setting performance targets, the goal-attainment-reward link, and the specificity of goals to be achieved by managers, but not by the type of performance measure used to evaluate performance. With regard to the consequences of procedural fairness, the results indicate that: (1) the effects of procedural fairness on job satisfaction and performance are indirect and fully mediated by distributive fairness, trust, and organisational commitment; (2) the effect of procedural fairness on organisational commitment is partially mediated by distributive fairness and trust; and (3) the effect of procedural fairness on goal commitment is partially mediated by trust. Finally, the results indicate that the effect of RMPM on performance is contingent on goal specificity, but not on goal difficulty.

Jiang, Like. "Determinants and consequences of internal audit function quality." Thesis, Cergy-Pontoise, Ecole supérieure des sciences économiques et commerciales, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ESEC0003.

Full text
Abstract:
I develop a new input-based measure of internal audit function (IAF) quality and investigate the factors that incentivize firms to establish a high-quality IAF as well as the economic consequences of a high-quality IAF. To operationalize my empirical analysis, I construct a unique, international archival IAF sample by matching a proprietary global internal auditor survey named CBOK 2010 with public data in the Worldscope database. Based on the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing proposed by the Institute of Internal Auditors, I measure IAF quality by desirable IAF attributes and practices which encompass the IAF’s (1) competence, (2) independence, (3) planning and reporting practices, and (4) quality assurance and improvement practices. Regarding the determinants of IAF quality, I find that the IAF quality is affected by firms’ operating environments and features of other governance mechanisms including board monitoring incentives, audit committee diligence, and CEO power. Moreover, firms’ incentives for a high-quality IAF are bolstered by strict and detailed IAF requirements in countries’ corporate governance codes. Finally, I document that other governance mechanisms, especially the monitoring incentives of directors, play a greater role in influencing the IAF quality when the overall regulatory environment is weak. Regarding the economic consequences of a high-quality IAF, I first address the role of IAF in providing assurance services in financial reporting and find that IAF quality is positively associated with earnings quality. Considering the increasing involvement of IAF in risk management and strategic initiatives, which leads to an expanded role of IAF in providing consulting services relevant to firms’ operations, I further provide evidence supporting that a high-quality IAF matters for firms’ operating performance. Specifically, I document that the speed of operating performance recovery after the recent financial crisis is significantly quicker for firms with a high-quality IAF than for firms with a low-quality IAF, and that the IAF quality is positively associated with firms’ investment efficiency in the post-financial-crisis period. In addition, I find that the extent to which the IAF is involved in strategic consulting activities has an incremental positive effect on performance recovery, which suggests that providing consulting services is an important way for the IAF to deliver value to firms. However, the benefits from such an expansion of consulting activities comes at a cost in firms with a low-quality IAF, as I find that the IAF’s involvement in strategic consulting can impair the IAF’s role in providing assurance services and hence negatively affects earnings quality when the IAF quality is low but not when the IAF quality is high. Overall, the findings suggest that if the IAF is expected to deliver value to firms by providing both assurance and consulting services, maintaining an appropriate level of IAF quality is essential

Abstract:
The dissertation includes four chapters. All chapters cover the overall topic: The consequences of corporate social responsibility disclosure. Chapter 1 introduces the motivation of thesis and summarizes an overview of the literature. Chapter 2 investigates the relationship between CSRD and CSR performance using Granger causality approach. Chapter 3 studies the impact of CSRD on financial performance under the moderation of corporate governance quality. Chapter 4 investigates the effect of CSRD to the level of information asymmetry with the presence of financial reporting quality. The main findings, contribution and discussion for future research are presented at the end of thesis

Abstract:
PERBACCO (a free Italian acronym for Life-cycle Performance, Innovation and Design Criteria for Structures and Infrastructures Facing Æolian and Other Natural Hazards) is a research project partly funded by the Italian Ministry for University (MIUR) in the PRIN (Progetti di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale) framework, for the years 2004-05.Within the project, a first attempt has been made to integrate different disciplines aiming at an overall optimization of the performance of a wide range of wind exposed structures and infrastructures, with consequent benefi cial impact on the society. The overall objectives were (a) to provide unifi ed concepts for "expected performance" and "risks induced by æolian and other natural hazards", to be applied to structures and infrastructures over their whole life-cycle, such to be acceptable to stakeholders in the construction process (i.e. from the owner to the end-user), (b) to provide models and methodologies for dynamic monitoring of the performance of structures and infrastructures, to be integrated in appropriately designed procedures, and (c) to collect, refi ne, fi le and disseminate the knowledge available on a European basis, concerning the performance of wind-exposed structures and facilities, in a way such to be of use to Construction Industry. This volume summarises the main results obtained during the Project, with each Section addressing a different class of problems, to which many research Units have contributed. A list of papers containing the main results of the research activities carried out within the Project is also provided in each Section.

Abstract:
Abstract Human history has witnessed several major disasters that have affected the economic, social and environmental conditions of their respective regions. The nuclear disaster of Chernobyl (1986, Ukraine, that time the Soviet Union) and Fukushima (2011, Japan) appears to be the most significant disasters in terms of negative outcomes produced for their population over a long time. Despite this, the analysis of the socio-economic outcomes of these disasters has attracted much less scientific attention than health or radiation-related issues (UNDP 2002a; Lehman and Wadsworth 2009, 2011). Although nuclear accidents are deemed to be rare events, the Fukushima disaster occurred only 25 years after Chernobyl. These disasters highlighted the need for a detailed long-term socio-economic analysis of these accidents to acquire sufficient knowledge to be applied when considering new construction sites for nuclear power facilities (Lehman and Wadsworth 2011). This chapter focuses on the problem of permanent resettlement resulting from nuclear disasters and its effects on regional demographic trajectories and spatial shifts. Based on the results of this study we argue that mass displacement after a nuclear disaster rather than the radiation itself has a much more significant impact on deteriorating health, natural reproduction and economic performance of the affected population. Furthermore, given the differences in radio-ecological conditions, reconstruction policy and the time framework, Fukushima may demonstrate demographic consequences that are different from the Chernobyl case.

Abstract:
Silvertech have implemented a large, complex leak detection system for an offshore basin with some 80 pipeline sectors in a number of multiple input-multiple output configurations with varying pipeline operational scenarios. This paper addresses two key issues. First a systematic approach to the determination of the risk and consequencees of a pipeline leak and hence the performance criteria and economic justification for a leak detection system is outlined. The challenges associated with the Campos Basin leak detection system implementation are then described, including operational issues and the continuing verification of the performance of the leak detection system. Leak detection systems are often specified as a requirement without a sound basis of leak risk and consequence analysis and quantification of the risk reduction that will be afforded by any leak detection system and the system performance required to ensure the risk reduction is achieved and maintained. Silvertech have adopted a methodology that provides a systematic, sound approach to the quantification of pipeline leak risk, the commercial and environmental consequences and the risk reduction required to provide acceptable risk and consequence. The implicit trade-off between impact on production and leak consequence reduction is also considered. Finally the lessons learnt from the analysis and system implementation experience are used to derive the key issues that apply to the implementation of leak detection in large, complex pipeline configurations. The particular challenges of applying leak detection to existing installations are also highlighted.

Abstract:
Abstract The pipeline industry is increasingly utilizing reliability methods as a basis for decision-making when managing the integrity of pipeline systems. In this paper we present a methodology for developing reliability benchmarks for onshore low vapour pressure (LVP) liquids transmission pipelines to enable an operator to evaluate the performance of their pipelines relative to their industry peers. The goals of this methodology are to use an approach that is calibrated to historical performance, that remains interpretable, that can readily be adjusted over time, and that reflects the increased sensitivity of High Consequence Areas (HCAs). On this basis, the Top Quartile (Q1) and Average historical environmental performance of the top 20 largest liquid pipelines operators were identified as two primary benchmarks of interest. Top Quartile (Q1) environmental performance represents an industry leading benchmark performance while the Average historical environmental performance is representative of typical pipelines. This group of operators was selected on the basis that these major companies operate pipeline networks with comparable complexity, similar integrity challenges and a diverse range of operating environments (urban, rural, etc.). In addition, the length of their respective systems decreases the impact of small sample size issues. The dataset used for calculating the historical environmental performance of these operators was the 2010–2018 PHMSA Hazardous Liquids Incidents and Annual Mileage datasets. The framework presented in this paper, allows specific reliability benchmarks to be calculated for a given pipeline dependent on the environmental consequences associated with failure of the line. Consequences are considered in order to be risk-consistent between pipelines with different outflow potentials and different land use surroundings (HCA vs. Non-HCA). The heightened sensitivity of HCA areas is considered by including an impact ratio in calculating the reliability benchmarks. These benchmarks can be used to identify pipelines for additional scrutiny when the expected environmental performance does not meet benchmark levels and to flag areas for further evaluation. Quantifying the failure potential of pipeline segments gives operators insights into which maintenance actions will make the most effective use of the available resources to improve reliability. These benchmarks are calculated directly from historical data using a simple methodology and are easily recalibrated in the future as the performance of the pipeline industry continuously improves to meet increasing societal expectations.

Long-term stability and efficacy of historic activated carbon (AC) deployments at diverse freshwater and marine remediation sites. Abstract:
A number of sites around the United States have used activated carbon (AC) amendments to remedy contaminated sediments. Variation in site-specific characteristics likely influences the long-term fate and efficacy of AC treatment. The long-term effectiveness of an AC amendment to sediment is largely unknown, as the field performance has not been monitored for more than three years. As a consequence, the focus of this research effort was to evaluate AC’s long-term (6–10 yr) performance. These assessments were performed at two pilot-scale demonstration sites, Grasse River, Massena, New York and Canal Creek, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Aberdeen, Maryland, representing two distinct physical environments. Sediment core samples were collected after 6 and 10 years of remedy implementation at APG and Grasse River, respectively. Core samples were collected and sectioned to determine the current vertical distribution and persistence of AC in the field. The concentration profile of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment pore water with depth was measured using passive sampling. Sediment samples from the untreated and AC-treated zones were also assessed for bioaccumulation in benthic organisms. The data collected enabled comparison of AC distribution, PCB concentrations, and bioaccumulation measured over the short- and long-term (months to years).

Abstract:
We assess the consequences for consumers in 76 countries of multinational acquisitions in beer and spirits. Outcomes depend on how changes in ownership affect markups versus efficiency. We find that owner fixed effects contribute very little to the performance of brands. On average, foreign ownership tends to raise costs and lower appeal. Using the estimated model, we simulate the consequences of counter-factual national merger regulation. The US beer price index would have been 4-7% higher without divestitures. Up to 30% savings could have been obtained in Latin America by emulating the pro-competition policies of the US and EU.

Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates, maintains, and manages more than $232 billion worth of the Nation’s water resource infrastructure. Using the Operational Condition Assessment (OCA) system, the USACE allocates limited resources to assess conditions and maintain assets in efforts to minimize risks associated with asset performance degradation. Currently, OCAs are conducted on each component within a facility every 5 years, regardless of the component’s risk contribution. The analysis of risks associated with Flood Risk Management (FRM) facilities, such as dams, includes considering how the facility contributes to its associated FRM watershed system, understanding the consequences of degradation in the facility’s performance, and calculating the likelihood that the facility will perform as expected given the current OCA condition ratings of critical components. This research will develop a scalable methodology to model the probability of failure of components and systems that contribute to the performance of facilities in their respective FRM systems combined with consequences derived from hydrological models of the watershed to develop facility risk scores. This interim report documents the results of the first phase of this effort, stakeholder analysis and literature review, to identify candidate approaches to determine the probability of failure of a facility.

Banerjee, Onil, Martin Cicowiez, and Renato Vargas. Integrating the Value of Natural Capital in Evidence-Based Policy Making. Inter-American Development Bank, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0002900.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes how Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) can be integrated into economy wide analytical frameworks to enhance evidence based decision making. Examples from applications of the Integrated Environmental Economic Modelling (IEEM) Platform show how explicitly accounting for the contributions of the environment to the economy in economic forecasting can lead to substantially different policy recommendations, overcoming some of the scope limitations of traditional economic performance analysis. Furthermore, the paper describes how NCA can be integrated into more traditional economic performance measurements, such as the System of National Accounts and their indicators such as adjusted Gross Domestic Product and Genuine Savings. Integration of natural capital into economy-wide analytical frameworks leads to better policy uptake of research findings and it empowers policymakers to avoid short-sighted decisions, which, although they can generate short-term economic gain, can have adverse consequences for economic, social, and environmental sustainability in the long run.

Grossir, Guillaume. On the design of quiet hypersonic wind tunnels. Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35294/tm57.

Full text
Abstract:
This document presents a thorough literature review on the development of hypersonic quiet tunnels. The concept of boundary layer transition in high-speed flows is presented first. Its consequences on the free-stream turbulence levels in ground facilities are reviewed next, demonstrating that running boundary layers along the nozzle walls must remain laminar for quiet operation. The design key points that enable laminar boundary layers and hypersonic operation with low free-stream noise levels are then identified and discussed. The few quiet facilities currently operating through the world are also presented, along with their design characteristics and performances. The expected characteristics and performances of a European quiet tunnel are also discussed, along with flow characterization methodologies and different measurement techniques. It is finally shown that the required expertise to establish the first European quiet hypersonic wind tunnel is mostly at hand.
