Abstract:
ABSTRACT Objectives: This study aimed to (1) measure the degree of patient satisfaction among the clinical and nonclinical dental services offered at specialty dental centers and (2) investigate the factors associated with the degree of overall satisfaction. Materials and Methods: Four hundred and ninety-seven participants from five dental centers were recruited for this study. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire to measure patient satisfaction with clinical and nonclinical dental services. Analysis of variance, t-tests, a general linear model, and stepwise regression analysis was applied. Results: The respondents were generally satisfied, but internal differences were observed. The exhibited highest satisfaction with the dentists’ performance, followed by the dental assistants’ services, and the lowest satisfaction with the center's physical appearance and accessibility. Females, participants with less than a bachelor's degree, and younger individuals were more satisfied with the clinical and nonclinical dental services. The stepwise regression analysis revealed that the coefficient of determination (R2 ) was 40.4%. The patient satisfaction with the performance of the dentists explained 42.6% of the overall satisfaction, whereas their satisfaction with the clinical setting explained 31.5% of the overall satisfaction. Conclusion: Additional improvements with regard to the accessibility and physical appearance of the dental centers are needed. In addition, interventions regarding accessibility, particularly when booking an appointment, are required.

Abstract:
The Specialized Dental Care Centers (SDCC) have the mission to expand access to public medium complexity dental care and support the primary health care actions at this level of complexity. However, it is necessary to ensure the quality of services and to evaluate such services continuously to identify weaknesses and strengths that support the processes of leadership/management. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of studies on the assessment of oral health in specialized care that may indicate which factors should be investigated. Therefore, this integrated literature review sought to explore the plethora of publications on the evaluation of SDCC in the LILACS and MEDLINE data bases in October 2013 to identify factors possibly related to the performance of such health services. Thus, 13 references were included in this review pointing to forms of organization and management of work processes related to the creation of healthcare networks (operation of regulation centers and setting up of health consortiums). They include the contextual characteristics of the places where SDCCs are located (population size, Family Health Strategy coverage, Municipal Human Development Index, governance, governing capacity) were factors that influenced the SDCCs performance.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Centers for Dental Specialties (CDS) in the country and associations with sociodemographic indicators of the municipalities, structural variables of services and primary health care organization in the years 2004-2009. The study used secondary data from procedures performed in the CDS to the specialties of periodontics, endodontics, surgery and primary care. Bivariate analysis by χ2 test was used to test the association between the dependent variable (performance of the CDS) with the independents. Then, Poisson regression analysis was performed. With regard to the overall achievement of targets, it was observed that the majority of CDS (69.25%) performance was considered poor/regular. The independent factors associated with poor/regular performance of CDS were: municipalities belonging to the Northeast, South and Southeast regions, with lower Human Development Index (HDI), lower population density, and reduced time to deployment. HDI and population density are important for the performance of the CDS in Brazil. Similarly, the peculiarities related to less populated areas as well as regional location and time of service implementation CDS should be taken into account in the planning of these services.

Abstract:
Objectives: To retrospectively assess radiographic data and to prospectively classify radiographs (namely, panoramic, bitewing, periapical, and cephalometric images), we compared three deep learning architectures for their classification performance. Methods: Our dataset consisted of 31,288 panoramic, 43,598 periapical, 14,326 bitewing, and 1176 cephalometric radiographs from two centers (Berlin/Germany; Lucknow/India). For a subset of images L (32,381 images), image classifications were available and manually validated by an expert. The remaining subset of images U was iteratively annotated using active learning, with ResNet-34 being trained on L, least confidence informative sampling being performed on U, and the most uncertain image classifications from U being reviewed by a human expert and iteratively used for re-training. We then employed a baseline convolutional neural networks (CNN), a residual network (another ResNet-34, pretrained on ImageNet), and a capsule network (CapsNet) for classification. Early stopping was used to prevent overfitting. Evaluation of the model performances followed stratified k-fold cross-validation. Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) was used to provide visualizations of the weighted activations maps. Results: All three models showed high accuracy (>98%) with significantly higher accuracy, F1-score, precision, and sensitivity of ResNet than baseline CNN and CapsNet (p < 0.05). Specificity was not significantly different. ResNet achieved the best performance at small variance and fastest convergence. Misclassification was most common between bitewings and periapicals. For bitewings, model activation was most notable in the inter-arch space for periapicals interdentally, for panoramics on bony structures of maxilla and mandible, and for cephalometrics on the viscerocranium. Conclusions: Regardless of the models, high classification accuracies were achieved. Image features considered for classification were consistent with expert reasoning.

Abstract:
This study aimed to find the set of risk indicators best able to predict root caries (RC) incidence in caries-active adults utilizing data from the Xylitol for Adult Caries Trial (X-ACT). Five logistic regression models were compared with respect to their predictive performance for incident RC using data from placebo-control participants with exposed root surfaces at baseline and from two study centers with ancillary data collection (n = 155). Prediction performance was assessed from baseline variables and after including ancillary variables [smoking, diet, use of removable partial dentures (RPD), toothbrush use, income, education, and dental insurance]. A sensitivity analysis added treatment to the models for both the control and treatment participants (n = 301) to predict RC for the control participants. Forty-nine percent of the control participants had incident RC. The model including the number of follow-up years at risk, the number of root surfaces at risk, RC index, gender, race, age, and smoking resulted in the best prediction performance, having the highest AUC and lowest Brier score. The sensitivity analysis supported the primary analysis and gave slightly better performance summary measures. The set of risk indicators best able to predict RC incidence included an increased number of root surfaces at risk and increased RC index at baseline, followed by white race and nonsmoking, which were strong nonsignificant predictors. Gender, age, and increased number of follow-up years at risk, while included in the model, were also not statistically significant. The inclusion of health, diet, RPD use, toothbrush use, income, education, and dental insurance variables did not improve the prediction performance.

Background: Patient safety is a priority for achieving higher quality health care standards and human error> reduction. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of appropriate infection control practices in a prosthodontic clinic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 460 dental students and dentists recruited from five centers. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires> composed of 25 questions. The questionnaires> assessed infection control practices in prosthodontic clinics, including wearable barriers, disinfection measures among patients, disinfection of laboratory submissions, and proper infection control. Other questions assessed sources of knowledge, self-evaluation of knowledge, implementation, and satisfaction with knowledge application. Results: Total correct answers for proper practice (16 questions) had a mean of 12.5 with a standard deviation of 2.8. The most commonly practiced procedure was wearing a mask (99.8%) and the least was sterilizing the facebow before its use by the patient (53.7%). Participants from governmental colleges (m = 13.67, SD = 2.17) had significantly higher scores than participants from private colleges (m = 12.35, SD = 2.9), p <0.001. Only 2.8% had never attended a lecture, and only 13.8% had never had hands-on training for infection control. Despite 49.1% evaluating themselves as having very poor to poor knowledge, 90.7% had fair to very good valuation of their infection control implementations, and 87.6% were satisfied with their knowledge and performance levels. Conclusion: Dental students and dentists have high levels of adequate infection control practices in the prosthodontic clinic despite the moderate level of their satisfaction with their knowledge.

Abstract:
Tertiary pediatric medical centers disproportionately care for low-income, underserved children with significant dental needs. Long wait times for hospital operating room treatment increase tooth loss rather than restoration. Oral sedation has commonly been provided to avoid the long waits for operating room treatment. However, this can be challenging with young, anxious patients. High failure rates and repeat visits for oral sedation have resulted in continued waiting for definitive dental services in the operating room. The Division of Dentistry requested the Department of Anesthesiology to create a general anesthesia program in the dental clinic to increase the use of anesthesia services but align the cost of the anesthetic with the revenue stream. Our aim was to objectively measure the performance of a dental clinic anesthesia service by comparing the percentage of case completions, percentage of complete radiographs, and number of serious adverse events to clinic-based oral sedations. We were also interested in total number of cases completed. We retrospectively studied data regarding an in-office general anesthesia (IOGA) program for dentistry and compared it to oral sedations before and after instituting the IOGA program. Patients received either a general endotracheal anesthetic or nonintubated total intravenous general anesthesia. Successful case completion increased from 88.6% (oral sedation) to 99.5% (IOGA). One hundred percent of IOGA cases had complete radiographs, as opposed to 63.4% for oral sedation. This was an increase from 53.5% from the previous 2 years with oral sedation. Serious adverse event rate was 0% (0/508) for oral sedation and 0.2% (1/418) for IOGA. Comparing 2 years before and after IOGA revealed a decrease in oral sedations from 930 to 508, whereas IOGA increased from 0 to 418 cases. Anesthesia services in dental clinic increased complete dental care and complete radiographs, reduced failed sedations, and were performed safely.

Abstract:
Background: It is no doubt that longer wait times can affect patient care and patients’ willingness to seek health-care services. Not only does this disrupt the continuity of treatment and care, but it also negatively impacts patient outcomes. During the past few years, the concept of patient satisfaction has become a vital component in assessing the delivery and efficiency of care. Patient satisfaction is a performance indicator that measures the extent to which patient is content and satisfied with the level of care provided by health-care institutions and providers. Therefore, this research examined association between the wait times and patient satisfaction in selected primary health-care centers in Al Qassim region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methodology: A patient satisfaction questionnaire was administered to 850 patients, which collected patient perceptions on the delivery of care at health-care centers in Al Qassim City. Outcome measures included wait times for: registration and payment, seeing the physician, performing radiation and assays, and dispensing the medications. Results: The response rate was 72.94% (n = 620). The study found that 27.90% of the participants stated that the wait time to see the physician ranged between 21 and 30 minutes. Overall patients were mainly dissatisfied for wait times in relation to medication dispensation, vital signs measurement, dental consultations, and radiological investigation. The study found a positive association between the patient satisfaction and their education, marital status, and job. A significant regression equation was established between the patient satisfaction and age-group and literacy. Conclusion: The study advocated the need for recent technology, sufficient staffing, and patient-centered friendly methods to reduce wait times.

Abstract:
Introduction. The backbone of Serbian health system forms the public healthcare provider network with 355 institutions and around 112,000 employees, owned and controlled by the Ministry of Health and financed mainly by the Republican Health Insurance Fund. The law recognizes private practice that was not included, till recently, in the public funding scheme. New Health Insurance Law (2005) decreased the number of entitlements in the basic health service package. It abolished the right to dental health care for adults (exceptions are: children, older than 65, pregnant women and emergency cases) as well as the right to compensate travel expenses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of health care system of the Republic of Serbia and indicate parameters that determine the state of health of the population, on the ground of data obtained by the Institute of Public Health of Serbia. Results. In the period 2004-2012, cardiovascular diseases represented the main cause of illness in Serbia (50%). In 2012 digestive system diseases were on the second place. Neoplasm and nervous system diseases were on the third place. From 2007 to 2012 there was slight decline in the birth rate and number of deaths, but the death rate increased from 13.9 to 14.2. Health care system in Serbia is funded through the combination of public finances and private contributions. Primary care is provided in 158 health care centres and health care stations, secondary and tertiary care services are offered in general hospitals, specialized hospitals, clinics, clinico-hospital centers and clinical centres. Conclusion. A significant but not satisfactory progress has been achieved in the field of health status indicators as the most important outcome of the final performance of the health system. The transition of public health care system in Serbia since the communist period to present and slow integration with European Union is unfinished process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine the Planning, Programming, and Budgeting process within the Naval Dental Centers (NDCs) as well as their particular budget formulation and execution procedures. Since there has been no extensive research done concerning budgeting and Naval Dental Centers, this thesis stands as a small-scale representative of budgetary processes in this small but vital section of the military. Moreover, the lack of dental readiness among personnel of operational commands recently debated in Congress during the summer of 2002 illustrates the critical nature of this topic. To analyze the topic in depth the followingpoints, among others, concerning budgetary policies of Naval Dental Centers must be examined; how do NDCs fit in the overall budgeting process of the Navy, how do NDCs formulate and execute budgets, what are their core missions, how do marks and reclamas affect the process, what factors affect the disparity between the funding NDCs request and what they actually receive, what performance measures are compiled and what role do they play in the budgeting process. The specific goal of this study is to provide prospective NDC comptrollers with the insight into procedures, technicalities, and peculiarities of a Medical Service Corps comptroller's job in a Naval Dental Center command.

Abstract: In Brazil, with regard to secondary attention in oral health, particularly in specialized dental centers (SDC), little has been studied in this field and the need to better organize oral health care, indicates the completion of the evaluation studies. Indicators of the health-disease process, influenced by social inequalities, reveal profound differences in disease patterns and also in the pattern of use of health services, with prejudice to those of higher social risk. The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of the SDC in reaching production targets in specialized clinical procedures, identifying possible associations between performance of the SDC and SDC structural variables, contextual municipality variables and form of organization of primary care. This study used secondary data from the production of procedures implemented by the SDC, implemented in Brazil in the period 2004 to 2009, in the dental specialties of Periodontics, Endodontics, and minor oral surgery. Statistical bivariant analysis was performed using Qhi-square test to verify the association between the dependent variable (SDC performance) and independent variables. With regard to Global Compliance Goals, this study concluded that the overall SDC performance was very poor/poor. With regard to coverage in the Family Health Strategy and Oral Health Care within this strategy, it also concluded that the SDC performance was very poor/poor in municipalities with larger population coverage. Furthermore, the statistical analysis results also showed that the lower the HDIM and population density in municipalities, the lower the SDC performance. It was concluded that the implantation of specialized dental services and the establishment of reference flows and cross-reference does not constitute a guarantee of access to specialized care. There is a need to rethink flows and deepen knowledge in order to improve access to this level of attention

The aim of this study aimed to evaluate the performance of specialized dental clinics that have Ordinance Qualification Program Smiling Brazil located in the Region Cariri (CearÃ, Brazil) in 2010. We used the data recorded in the database of the Department of the SUS (DATASUS), information from SIA / SUS. After collection, the information was imported into the program TAB for Windows - TabWin - developed by DATASUS in order to allow for rapid tabs on DBF files that constitute the basic components of information systems of the SUS. An indicator called Global Compliance Goals (CGM) developed by E FIGUEREDO GÃES, 2009, was used to evaluate the performance of the services performed by CEOs. Data analysis was built a table with the number of procedures by specialty (subgroup) for each Specialty Dental Center (EOC). We calculated the average monthly procedures performed by CEO and the ratio of the average number of procedures performed monthly and the target unit of each evaluated according to the type of procedure. The efficacy of the CEO was obtained by the average of this ratio. Still, graphs were made of the number of procedures performed and advocated for the Centers. Of the seven CEOs studied, measurement of the CGM, it was found that 42.85% of the specialized obtained, poor performance, fulfilling only one of the four goals set by Ordinance 600/2006 of the Ministry of Health The only CEO who has fulfilled all goals, achieving optimal performance was the municipality of Farias Brito. In contrast, the center located in the city of Crato failed to execute the goals of the procedures in any branch of dentistry, not reaching a score (poor performance). It was found that the AB Specialty (Primary) all centers achieved the targets except the CEO Barbalha and Crato where 9% and 11%, respectively, certain procedures have not occurred. In the surgery procedure, it is emphasized that only the CEO of Farias Brito has achieved the number of attendances defined for it (1.36 times the expected number). Of those who did not reach the target the most critical situation was the CEO who left Old Mission to achieve 89% (71 cases) of the surgeries. It was concluded that the performance of specialized dental clinics of Cariri in 2010 is unsatisfactory as production proposed by the Ministry of Health.

With the rise in cyber-attacks on cloud environments like Brute Force, Malware or Distributed Denial of Service attacks, information security officers and data center administrators have a monumental task on hand. Organizations design data center and service delivery with the aim of catering to maximize device provisioning & availability, improve application performance, ensure better server virtualization and end up securing data centers using security solutions at internet edge protection level. These security solutions prove to be largely inadequate in times of a DDoS cyber-attack. In this paper, traditional data center design is reviewed and compared to the proposed three tier data center. The resilience to withstand against DDoS attacks is measured for Real User Monitoring parameters, compared for the two infrastructure designs and the data is validated using T-Test.

Abstract:
Professional wrestling’s play of masculinity is profoundly carnivalesque as it affirms and mocks, celebrates and critiques prevailing definitions of what it is to be a “real” man in contemporary American culture. Because it is centered on, and always returns to, the display of male bodies, and because the action is both a simulation and a parody of violence between men, the performance is always highly ambivalent and profoundly transgressive, at once hypervisible and hypermasculine. As professional wrestlers mask their profound dependence upon and cooperation with each other in the ring, so too they perform a denial of intimacy, even as their performances are exceptionally, provocatively intimate. Despite its apparent social subversiveness, in the end, professional wrestling affirms the dominant culture; it is always a performance by men, for men, about men. Both its ethos and its aesthetics are explicitly centered on the idea of masculinity at once essential and performed.

Abstract:
This chapter examines mid- to late-Victorian attempts at self-distancing from triumphalist (and literalist) early antislavery promises, focusing in particular on how the themes of haunting, displacement, and denial threaded through many later Victorians' patriotic invocations of liberating empire. Drawing on emerging pedagogical and scholarly revolutions in studies of nineteenth-century British relations to slavery, the chapter considers histories of disciplinary reticence dating back in part to the Victorians themselves. It also discusses the increasingly iconic histories of the 1840 World Anti-Slavery Convention and J.M.W. Turner's painting Slave Ship as well as Elizabeth V. Spelman's Fruits of Sorrow and her notion of “changing the subject.” Finally, it explores the discipline termed “ethical refocalization” by turning to three parallel scenes of interrupted Poetess performance, in Germaine de Staël's Corinne, or Italy; Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh, and George Eliot's Spanish Gypsy.

Abstract:
The major challenge of Internet of Things (IoT) generated data is its hypervisor level vulnerabilities. Malicious VM deployment and termination are so simple due to its multitenant shared nature and distributed elastic cloud features. These features enable the attackers to launch Distributed Denial of Service attacks to degrade cloud server performance. Attack detection techniques are applied to the VMs that are used by malicious tenants to hold the cloud resources by launching DDoS attacks at data center subnets. Traditional dataflow-based attack detection methods rely on the similarities of incoming requests which consist of IP and TCP header information flows. The proposed approach classifies the status patterns of malicious VMs and ideal VMs to identify the attackers. In this article, information theory is used to calculate the entropy value of the malicious virtual machines for detecting attack behaviors. Experimental results prove that the proposed system works well against DDoS attacks in IoT applications.

Abstract:
While social scientists provide description and explanation of the institutions, discourses and long-term processes of social change that structure culture, McGahern gives his readers a sense of what it was like to live in Catholic Ireland in the latter half of the twentieth century. He reveals the ways in which people were constrained by their culture but also the ways that they constructed themselves and negotiated cultural mores. His work delves into their ways of being and representing themselves, their strategies of action and performance of identity. The Pornographer provides key insights into the shift from rural to urban society and the decline in the importance of the Catholic Church in everyday life. This chapter explores how McGahern reveals what it was like to make love and have sex in Ireland during the shift from a Catholic culture of self-denial to a modern urban, cosmopolitan culture of self-fulfilment and self-indulgence. It also examines the gap between the critical reflection of the novelist and the lack of critical reflection and insight into this clash of cultures in his own life, as revealed in Memoir.

Abstract:
Pipeline is the common mode for transporting oil, gas, and various petroleum products. Buried linepipe can be exposed to various external interferences and corrosive environment and as a result, damage in the form of dent or corrosion or crack or gouge or combination of any of these damages can form in the pipe wall. Such damage or combined damages can reduce the pressure capacity of the pipeline. A defect combining dent and crack, often known as dent-crack defect, can develop in the wall of a buried oil and gas linepipe. This combined defect may lead to a leak or a rupture in the pipe wall and hence, the pipeline operator becomes concerned about the performance and safety of the pipeline when a dent-crack defect is detected in the field pipeline. A long-term research program is currently underway at the Centre for Engineering Research in Pipelines, University of Windsor to study the influence of various parameters such as dent depth and operating line pressure on the pressure capacity or burst strength of 30 inch diameter and X70 grade pipes with D/t of about 90. From the study completed so far, it has been found that the dent depth of 8% with crack depth of 4 mm or more can reduce the pressure capacity by 32%. This paper discusses the test specimens, test setup, test procedure, test results, and data obtained from finite element analyses.

Abstract:
There has been significant research in recent years to analyze and improve the impact behavior and puncture resistance of railroad tank cars. Ultimately, the results of this work will be used by the Government regulatory agencies in the United States and Canada to establish performance-based testing requirements and to develop methods to evaluate the crashworthiness and structural integrity of different tank car designs. This paper describes results of recent side impact testing and corresponding analyses using detailed finite element analyses (FEA). The test and analyses were performed to evaluate the side impact puncture performance of DOT-111 tank cars. The tank car was filled with water to approximately 97 percent of the volume. The tank was then sealed but not pressurized. The tank car was impacted at the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. by a 297,125-pound ram car with 12-by 12-inch ram head fitted to the ram car impacted the tank center. The analyses were on overall good agreement with the measured impact response. The lading was found to play a more significant role in the impact response than in previous testing and analyses of pressure tank cars. This is not surprising considering the reduced structural stiffness of the tanks compared to thicker pressure tank cars and the reduced effective stiffness from the initially unpressurized tank at impact. The smaller outage volume also contributes to a dramatic increase in the tank pressure as the dent formation reduces the tank volume and compresses the contents of the tank.

Abstract:
The Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Research and Development is conducting research into passenger locomotive fuel tank crashworthiness. A series of impact tests is being conducted to measure fuel tank deformation under two types of dynamic loading conditions — blunt and raking impacts. This program is intended to result in a better understanding of design features that improve the puncture resistance of passenger locomotive fuel tanks. One reason for performing this program is to aid in development of appropriate standards for puncture resistance to be applied to alternatively-designed fuel tanks, such as on diesel multiple unit (DMU) passenger rail equipment. This paper describes the results of the third blunt impact test of retired F-40 locomotive fuel tanks. The test setup was designed for the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado, to impart blunt impacts to the bottom of each fuel tank specimen. The specimens tested to date are from FRA-owned retired F-40 passenger locomotives. To conduct the test, each tank was emptied of fluid and mounted on a crash wall with the bottom surface exposed. A rail cart modified with a “rigid” indenter measuring 12 inches by 12 inches, was released to impact the bottom of fuel tank at a target impact speed. The first two tests, conducted on October 8 and 9, 2013, were designed to impact the center of two different tank designs. Tests were conducted at impact speeds of 4.5 and 6.2 mph and caused maximum residual dents of 5 inches and 1.5 inches, respectively. On August 20, 2014 the test of fuel tank 234 was conducted to impact the tank off-center between two baffles. Force-deformation measurements were collected for each tank during the three tests. The series of tests provide information regarding the influence of tank design on puncture resistance. In the test of tank 234, the target impact speed was 12.5 mph, and the actual impact occurred at 11.2 mph. The test resulted in a residual dent depth of approximately 9 inches, and buckling of several internal baffles. The impact did not result in puncture of the tank. Following the test, the tank was cut open to permit examination of the baffles. This examination revealed a different baffle geometry than was modeled based on pre-test measurements. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to predict the behavior of the tank during the test. The FE model of the tank required several material properties to be defined in order to capture puncture behavior. The combination of metal plasticity, ductile failure, and element removal would permit the model to simulate puncture for this tank. Following the test, the tank was cut open, revealing a different baffle arrangement than had been initially thought. The post-test FE model was then updated to include the actual baffle arrangement of tank 234. With the actual baffle arrangement included in the model, the FE results are in fairly good agreement with the test. Additional changes to the ductile failure criterion were also made in the post-test model. The objective of this research program is to establish the baseline puncture resistance of current passenger locomotive fuel tanks under dynamic impact conditions and to develop performance requirements to ensure an appropriate level of puncture resistance in alternative fuel tank designs, such as DMU fuel tanks.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Pipeline is the common mode for transporting oil, gas, and various petroleum products. Structural integrity of oil and gas transmission pipelines is often threatened by external interferences such as concentrated load, impact load, and external pressure. These external interferences can cause ‘mechanical damage’ leading to structural failure in onshore and offshore linepipes. Lateral load is applied as a concentrated load on a small area of pipe segment and can cause local buckling, bend, dent, or out-of-roundness in the pipe. As an example, a concentrated load in buried onshore linepipe can occur if a segment of the linepipe rests on a narrow rock tip or even a narrow hard surface. Such concentrated lateral load may or may not cause immediate rupture or leak in the linepipe; however, it may produce out-of-roundness with or without a dent in the pipe cross section, which can be detrimental to the structural and/or operational integrity of the pipeline. Hence, the pipeline operator becomes concerned about the performance and safety of the linepipe if a pipe section is subject to a sustained concentrated load. A research work using full-scale tests and finite element method (FEM) was undertaken at the Centre for Engineering Research in Pipelines (CERP), University of Windsor to study the influence of various internal pressures and diameter-to-thickness ratios on the out-of-roundness of 30 in diameter (NPS 30) and X70 grade pipes with D/t of 90 when subjected to a stroke-controlled concentrated load. This paper discusses the test specimens, test setup, test procedure, test results, and FEM results obtained from this study.

Full text
Abstract:
The degree of reaction selected in designing steam turbines is of paramount importance. There has been competition between 50% reaction and impulse turbines over a century. It is therefore important to understand the effect of the degree of reaction on aerodynamic performance. In particular, a change in the degree of reaction affects the leakage flow substantially in both the stationary and rotating blades due to a change in the blade loading. The effect of the degree of reaction on the efficiency loss, due to leakage flows, is systematically investigated in this paper using analytical models. It is shown that the appropriate way to understand the efficiency loss, due to leakage flows, is to estimate the kinetic energy dissipation rather than the leakage mass flow rate, as demonstrated by Yoon et al. [1]. In order to estimate the efficiency loss due to leakage flows, the well-known Denton model [2] is extended by considering the velocity triangles in a repeating turbine stage. The extended model is compared with experimental data, at different degrees of reaction, and shows good agreement with measurements. It is shown that a reduction in the degree of reaction, at a fixed flow coefficient and a fixed work coefficient, results in an increase in the efficiency loss across the stationary blade, but a decrease in that across the rotating blade. However, the efficiency loss, across the stationary blade hub, is estimated to be smaller than the efficiency loss across the rotating blade tip. A stationary blade can be better sealed than a rotating blade by applying multiple seals and using a leakage path with a low radius. The efficiency loss, due to the tip leakage flow, is substantially influenced by the choice of the tip configuration. Shrouded blades show several aerodynamic advantages over unshrouded blades in reducing the tip leakage efficiency loss. Employing multiple seals over the shroud decreases the tip leakage mass flow rate significantly. Moreover, as the degree of reaction approaches zero, the tip leakage mass flow rate over the shroud becomes small, since the axial pressure drop across the rotating blade becomes small. In unshrouded blades, a reduction in the degree of reaction is shown to increase the leakage mass flow rate over the tip, because the circumferential pressure difference between the blade pressure side and blade suction side generally increases when the pitch-to-chord ratio remains unchanged.
