Abstract:
To investigate the feasibility of using heat pipes in airborne systems, heat pipe performance at large axial accelerations in the range of 3–12g was studied experimentally. The heat input chosen corresponded to the optimal heat pipe performance without acceleration. When applied against the direction of the liquid flow (unfavorable orientation) the accelerations were large enough to exceed the capillary limit, as was seen from the strong increase in the evaporator temperature. The influence of accelerations in the direction of the liquid flow (favorable orientation) was found to be more compli

Abstract:
The methodology described here presents quantitative measures of estimating the severity of postural instability based on the proximity and spread of body sway in relation to the basal area of support. A simplified functional basal area of support is determined based on the maximal forward reaching ability of the subject. Three non-dimensional indices for quantitating the potential of postural instability are introduced. Application of this method is illustrated through an experiment with ten healthy industrial workers performing four different tasks. The results indicate that these indices ar

The performance instability of learning disabled (LD), emotionally handicapped (EH), and nonhandicapped (NH) children was compared. Employing two contrasting strategies of repeated measurement, we administered three third-grade reading passages to 50 LD, 37 EH, and 40 NH children. First, subjects were tested on a different reading passage once a week for 3 consecutive weeks; second, pupils were tested on three passages in one sitting. Analyses of covariance were run on a stability index calculated on the number of words read correctly during each administration. On both sets of measurements, L
