Abstract:
Many studies have analysed the ways in which the dominant forces of state and capital are shaping contemporary Indonesian political economy, social relations and cultural production. More and more of such studies have evaluated the significance of the "middle class(es)" as a burgeoning social force. Few studies specifically address the social agency of the subordinated classes, the bulk of Indonesia's population, identified as the wong cilik in this study. Only recently have some scholars begun to take seriously the rapid formation of an urban working class as an increasingly important component in Indonesian social dynamics. An underlying assumption of this study is that cultural production, in particular, popular performance, is an important window on, and component of, wong cilik social agency. This assumption is pursued by observing three principal sites of cultural contestation, poetry, the shadow play, wayang kulit, and "modem" theatre. These three, often overlapping sites, are set within a broad survey of popular performance in Java, followed by a regional focus on Tegal, located on the north west coast of Central Java.A bias in analysis towards the more formal and visible aspects of cultural production, such as performance text and conventions, has led to a distortion and insufficient recognition of wong cilik social agency. The first task of this study, therefore, is to develop a better approach to identifying and evaluating wong cilik cultural agency. The approach for which we are looking demands attention be given to the less formal aspects and social context of popular performance. Here, the relationship between performance and audience is central to identifying the cultural agency of the wong cilik. Depending on the surrounding social relations which constitute the performance, space can exist for wong cilik control over cultural production and meaning through audience participation.During the course of a performance the social significance of its changing nature is closely associated with changes in audience composition and involvement. An absent, indifferent, sometimes hostile, wong cilik audience can undermine the potential of formal moments to reinforce dominant ideologies and social relations. Conversely, heightened audience participation often characterises the informal moments of a performance. The possibility of social potency is greatest in these moments of close affinity between wong cilik audience and performance. This is apparent in the relationship between audience and dalang (puppeteer) in many local performances of wayang kulit. The informal 'comic interlude', in particular, can provide opportunity for the articulation of shared meanings and concerns between the predominantly wong cilik audience and sympathetic dalang, dependent on their patronage and coming from a similar socio-economic background. As part of the intelligentsia, the dalang, as with other cultural workers, has an important, often ambiguous, role in determining the significance of cultural production for the wong cilik. Here, it is important to recognise that the cultural workers, themselves, and their performances are socially constituted. In a study on theatre in Tegal observations of audience participation assist greatly in evaluating the effectiveness or sincerity in representing or asserting wong cilik sentiment in "modern" theatre and populist wayang mbeling. In general, this focus on audience participation helps situate popular performances in their surrounding social relations. This approach helps avoid elitist or essentialist tendencies that may occur from an over emphasis on the idealised characteristics and conventions of cultural forms or genres.

Bean, Heidi R. "Poetry 'n acts: the cultural politics of twentieth-century American poets' theater." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/638.

Full text
Abstract:
"Poetry 'n Acts: The Cultural Politics of Twentieth-Century American Poets' Theater," focuses on the disciplinary blind spot that obscures the productive overlap between poetry and dramatic theater and prevents us from seeing the cultural work that this combination can perform. Why did 2100 people turn out in 1968 to see a play in which most of the characters speak only in such apparently nonsensical phrases as "Red hus the beat trim doing going" and "Achtung swachtung"? And why would an Obie award-winning playwright move to New Jersey to write such a play in the first place? What led to the founding in 1978 of the San Francisco Poets Theatre by L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E writers, and why have those plays and performers been virtually ignored by critics despite the admitted centrality of performance to L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E writing's textual politics? Why would the renowned Yale Repertory Theatre produce in the 1990s the poetic, plotless plays of a theater newcomer twice in as many years--even when audiences walked out? What vision for the future of theater could possibly involve episodic drama with footnotes? In each example, part of the story is missing. This dissertation begins to fill in that gap. Attending to often overlooked aspects of theater language, this dissertation examines theatrical performances that use poetic devices to intervene in narratives of cultural oppression, often by questioning the very suitability of narrative as a primary means of social exchange. While Gertrude Stein must be seen as a forerunner to contemporary poets' theater, chapter one argues that the Living Theatre's late 1950s and early 1960s anti-authoritarian theater demonstrates key alliances between poetry and theater at mid-century. The remaining chapters closely examine particular instances of poets' theater by Amiri Baraka (known equally as poet and playwright), Carla Harryman (associated with West Coast poetry), and Suzan-Lori Parks (a critically acclaimed playwright). These productions put poetic theater on the backs of tractors in Harlem streets, in open gallery spaces, and in more conventional black box and proscenium architectures, and each case develops the importance of performance contexts and production histories in determining plays' cultural effects.

Nwanosike, F. "Evaluation of Nigerian ports post-concession performance." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2014. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/24469/.

Full text
Abstract:
Concession has been acknowledged as a valuable tool for port authorities to retain control of ports and shape the supply side of the terminal market, in the absence of full privatisation. This study empirically examines the influence of transfer of port operational services from the public to the private sector, through concession contracts on operational performance in the context of the Nigerian port industry. It extends the work of Liu (1995) and others on the comparative performance of public and private ports in the UK and other countries, by extending the study to the Nigerian ports concessions. The Nigerian port reform was borne out of the belief that the transfer of port operations from the public to the private sector will improve the efficiency of the ports, by instigating competition among the various terminal operators. The Nigerian port concession involved the delineation of six Nigerian ports into 25 terminals and awarded to terminal operators. The objectives of the study include, among others; the benchmarking of pre- and post-concession efficiency, to determine sources of efficiency change and to determine factors responsible for the improvement of Nigerian port performance. A positivist approach is adopted, using quantitative data that involves outputs and inputs related to the port‘s production function. Theoretical underpinnings of privatisation and performance, as well as empirical evidence from countries, were presented and discussed. The variables of the research were analysed using non-parametric DEA and the Malmquist Productivity Index to determine the efficiency and the sources of productivity change respectively. This study introduced a novel idea, by adopting a concentration index in measuring the level of competitiveness of ports. The conceptualised theoretical model of operational performance was solved using a two-stage multivariate regression, to determine the factors responsible for the improvement of the Nigerian ports‘ efficiency. The results of the analysis suggested that the productive performance of the ports under consideration improved after the transfer of terminal operations to the private sector, though not in all the ports. Indicating that the wholesale concession of the ports is not the best after all, some ports would have been better left under public ownership. The driver of the improved efficiency after concession, is scale efficiency (increased throughput levels), rather than technical efficiency. Therefore, the post-concession Nigerian ports performance is influenced by the scale of production and change of ownership. The delineation of the ports into terminals has not ushered in the expected competition among and within the ports.

Our objective is to develop a study about the interrelationship between literature and visual arts, a process that poets and artists have practised since the nineteenth century and today it has been established as an interdisciplinary discourse. For this, we conducted a case study of the work of the poet Ricardo Aleixo, whose poetry contains interfaces with the visuality which are reflected in his broad literary discourse. Therefore, not only did we analyze his work as an author who has an autobiographical testimony based on his cultural references and his African descent, but we also approached the visual aspects of his poetry, which sees the book as an object of art, concrete poetry as visual practice, covering the use of virtuality as a poetic tool, the role of photography in his writing process, the absorption of the literary text reflected in his performances, his multimedia poetic practice and his performance as a plastic artist in whose work the text is also used as a visual appeal. Our intention is to demonstrate that his poietic benefits from all the discursive arsenal which the poet uses in the construction of his work, a process that, in its sensitive fruition, does not see boundaries between literary and visual techniques, but uses them as a dialogue, providing an area of interart practice.

Vezile, Cikizwa Aretha. "Performance management at transnet national ports authority Port Elizabeth: the role of human resources." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1105.

Full text
Abstract:
At Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), disagreement existed in terms of the role of human resources in performance management, which resulted in different role expectations and perceptions, often leading to conflict. An overview of existing literature reviewed that performance management was mostly presented from the view of line management, and that the role of human resources was not well defined. The purpose of this study was therefore to clarify the role of human resources in performance management, and with specific application at Transnet National Ports Authority. The purpose of performance management in Transnet is to influence each employee to perform optimally in his/her position by ensuring that each employee understands his/her role in the performance management process. A very important aspect of performance management is that it does not entail one activity only; it is part of the employee development life cycle in which the employee agrees with the manager on the expected performance of tasks, evaluation standards, tools required and important dates when performance will be formally discussed. The objectives of the study were achieved by means of a literature review. Following the literature review interviews were conducted with the Group Performance Manager, a line manager and a human resources practitioner at TNPA to get their views of performance management at TNPA and specifically of the role of human resources in performance management. The interviews, in addition to the literature study, also served as a basis for a survey questionnaire, which was used to probe the views of line iv management and human resources practitioners at TNPA on the role of human resources in performance management. The results of the interviews and the survey showed that performance management was not applied as a continuous and developmental process at TNPA, and that it was often perceived as punitive. The results also indicated that human resources at TNPA should be well versed in the use of the score card method and apply quality assurance in performance management. Recommendations were made for the role of line management and the role of human resources in performance management at TNPA, as well as for the relationship between the two parties.

Girard, Alexandre.

Full text
Abstract:

______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT<br>The outskirt of Brasília has a voice. It echoes in the search for solutions to its problems from the criticism of everyday life through the rap's blunt rhymes. One of the bearers of this voice has a name: GOG. This research aims to analyze the songs literally from this which is one of the most respected and renowned Brazilian rappers in this cultural environment, including he is acclaimed as the poet of the National Rap. The work has as a main source the lyrics of the songs selected by him in his book The rhyme denounces, a sort of anthology with 48 letters of raps that address various phases of the artist, as well as videos and interviews available on his website and other sources. The specificity of the rap as a unique and innovative aesthetic (hybrid of singing with exploration of speech) allows us to identify a contemporary oral poetry that narrates with intensity the misfortunes and the desires of those who live in the outskirt ambience. However, a careful look at the lyrics shows that the universe goes far beyond the outskirt and the compositions are opposed to the center (the economic elite) with an acid speech, almost always manichean. The analyses are based on Paul Zumthor's theories on oral poetry, Luiz Tatit on popular song, Umberto Eco in the literary interpretation and Bakhtin considering the socio-historical and dialogic relationship between the subjects in the constitution of discourses. The intent is to demonstrate that the outskirt also writes poetry.

L'étude a comporté cinq axes.

Abstract:
In the precast construction market, the competitive situation is significantly affected by price, cost, productivity, and quality factors. Since self-consolidating concrete (SCC) was first introduced to the concrete industry in the late 1980s, it has been used worldwide in variety of applications. Despite the documented technical and economic advantages of SCC in precast, prestressed applications, the use of SCC has been limited in some countries due to some technical uncertainties of such innovative material. To explore some unsolved issues related to SCC and to contribute to a wider acceptance of SCC in precast, prestressed applications, this study was undertaken to assess the effect of mixture proportioning and material characteristics on the performance of SCC and recommend performance-based specifications for use of SCC in the precast, prestressed applications. The thesis presents an experimental program that contains four parts: (1) a parametric study to evaluate the influence of binder type, w/cm, coarse aggregate type, and coarse aggregate nominal size on the modulus of elasticity and compressive strength developments; (2) a parametric study to evaluate the effect of mixture proportioning and material characteristics on fresh and hardened properties of SCC; (3) a fractional factorial design to identify the relative significance of primary mixture parameters and their coupled effects on SCC properties; and (4) a field validation using full-scale AASHTO Type II girders cast to investigate constructability, material properties, and structural performance (the latter part was carried out by the research team of Professor Denis Mitchell at McGill University). Based on the experimental test results, SCC exhibits similar compressive strength and modulus of elasticity to that of conventional high-performance concrete (HPC) of normal slump consistency. SCC and HPC mixtures made of a given binder type exhibit similar autogenous shrinkage. However, SCC exhibits up to 30% and 20% higher drying shrinkage and creep, respectively, at 300 days compared to HPC made with similar w/cm but different paste volume. The results of the experiment program show that among the investigated material constituents and mix design parameters, the w/cm has the most significant effect on mechanical and visco-elastic properties. The binder content, binder type, and sand-to-total aggregate ratio (S/A) also have considerable effect on those properties. The thickening-type viscosity modifying admixture (VMA) content (0 to 150 ml/100 kg CM) does not significantly affect mechanical and visco-elastic properties. Based on the findings, some mixture parameters regarding the overall performance of SCC designated for precast and prestressed applications can be recommended: SCC made with relatively low w/cm (such as 0.34 vs. 0.40) should be selected to ensure desirable compressive strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), flexural strength, as well as less drying shrinkage and creep; the use of crushed aggregate with 12.5 mm MSA is suggested since it provides better mechanical properties of SCC compared to gravel; the use of low S/A (such as 0.46 vs. 0.54) to secure adequate mechanical and visco-elastic properties is recommended; the use of thickening-type VMA can help to secure robustness and stability of the concrete in the case of SCC proportioned with moderate and relatively high w/cm; and the use of Type MS cement can lead to lower creep and shrinkage than Type HE cement and 20% Class F fly ash. However, SCC mixtures made with Type HE cement and 20% Class F fly ash can result in better workability and mechanical properties. Therefore, it is recommended to use Type HE cement and 20% Class F fly ash and reduce binder content (such as 440 kg/m[exposant 3] vs. 500 kg/m[exposant 3]) to assure better overall performance of SCC. Validation on full-scale AASHTO-Type II girders using two HPC and two SCC mixtures show that girders casting with SCC can be successfully carried out without segregation and blocking for the selected optimized mixtures. The surface quality of the girders cast with SCC is quite satisfactory and of greater uniformity than girders cast with HPC. Both HPC and SCC mixtures develop similar autogenous shrinkage for mixtures made with similar w/cm. Again, the two evaluated SCC mixtures develop about 20% greater drying shrinkage than comparable HPC mixtures. Modifications of existing models to assess mechanical and visco-elastic properties of SCC used in the precast, prestressed applications are proposed. Based on the comparisons of various code provisions, the ACI 209 and CEB-FIP codes with suggested material coefficients can be recommended to estimate compressive strength. The modified AASHTO 2007 model can be used for predicting the elastic modulus and flexural strength. The AASHTO 2004 and 2007 models with suggested material coefficients can be used to estimate drying shrinkage and creep, respectively. The CEB-FIP 90 code model can be used to predict both drying shrinkage and creep. Finally, the modified Tazawa and Miyazawa 1997 model with material modifications can be used to estimate autogenous shrinkage of SCC.

Abstract:
Uncovering the feminine myth has been the topic of numerous studies. In recent years, research has focused on the return of ancient images of the goddess as the primary metaphor for the feminine myth. Utilizing feminine typologies from Jungian archetypalists and feminist scholars, this study summarizes the research on the archetypal feminine in order to analyze Diane di Prima's Loba poems. An analysis of the poems is undertaken and reveals patterns of feminine images which are consistent with other revisionist literature by women. The analysis is then used to frame a production of poems as a ritual celebrating the Loba as goddess. As Christine Downing suggests in The Goddess, women need images of the goddess to recognize the divine in themselves. The adaptation of the Loba poems for performance creates such an image. It also creates a theatre piece with what Sue-Ellen Case calls "woman as subject." As a result of this study, the goals of feminist archetypal theory are advanced as well as the goals of feminist theatre.

Abstract:

Abstract:
If translation involves reading and rewriting, we might question how we read a text before questioning the rewriting. Poetry translation seems to continually deal with problems of rhythm, rhyme, syntax, meaning, register. What if the translator understands reading as performance in order to reconceive all those issues within the perspective of another medium, which could free him from the constraints of writing? Researcher Peter Low (2003) suggests that poetry translators ask themselves whether they would like their texts to be recited, set to music etc., rather than just silently read. There would be, then, a functional alteration, and the target text would have a different skopos (REISS and VERMEER, 1996). We propose working with the latent force of the voice in the text; with a possibility of performance inscribed in the written medium: the vocality of Paul Zumthor (1993). The Afro-American poet Langston Hughes (1902-67) wrote poems very similar to blues lyrics and knowingly spoke (or even sung) his lines while creating them. That might suggest something about a way to read, absorb and recreate his poetry in another language. Our goal, therefore, is to translate his blues poems while singing and playing them on the guitar. The resulting blues songs in Portuguese are registered on a CD attached to this thesis. Our method is to set them to music while translating them, because the simultaneity of the processes is exactly what might interfere in the linguistic choices, influencing aspects of rhythm, meaning etc. Our hypothesis involves, then, the discussion of how the modes of expression of the popular song, in a given system of language-culture, would determine the results of the translation. That sort of experimentation will hopefully contribute to the Translation Studies by rearranging certain aspects of the text according to the dynamics of vocalization. These results are both academic, in terms of the discussion about translation itself; and artistic, as blues music composed for the Brazilian audience, presenting Langston Hughes, relatively unknown and non-translated in Brazil, in the form of a musical genre which is widely disseminated here.

Abstract:
With globalization and international competition sprees, the Supply Chain (SC) are designed on a global scale, the port spaces, thus allowing ideal implementation sites, thanks to the performance of its link port. Since the development of a strategic partnership between the link port of Djibouti (LPD) and the international group port Dubai Port World (DPW) in 2000, the containerized traffic increased of almost 700 %, between 2002 and 2012. With in addition, with the opening of Djibouti Free Zone (DFZ) in 2004, managed entirely by a subsidiary of the group DPW, nearly 150 businesses have implemented there warehouses in DFZ, with more than half of whom are foreign companies. Starting from this dual observation, our research has been focused on understanding the contribution of the LPD, to the performance of the SC. Abstract:
It is broadly known that efficient ports are crucial for the economic development of their surrounding area. However, the loading and unloading of goods in the ports, the related ship traffic, and the hinterland distribution can cause a number of negative environmental impacts. In this thesis, the concepts of environmental aspects and indicators are reviewed, as two relevant elements used in the environmental management. The importance of both elements within an Environmental Management System (EMS) is also justified. Although EMS standards recognise that the identification of environmental aspects and the use of indicators are essential processes, they do not specify any methodology to undertake these tasks. In addition, the present research demonstrates that although there is a high percentage of European ports that have already identified their significant aspects and performance indicators, most of these ports do not use any standardized method. This suggests that some of the procedures used by ports may not necessarily be science-based, systematic in approach or appropriate for the purpose of implementing effective environmental management. For these reasons, it was detected that a new methodology able to identify port' aspects and their most adequate indicators was needed. The developed methodology is called EPORTS.CAT and it comprises two main tools: a Tool for the identification and assessment of Environmental Aspects in Ports (TEAP) and a Tool for the identification and implementation of Environmental Indicators in Ports (TEIP). The first aims at the identification of the major environmental aspects that may be generated in a port and the assessment of their significance (TEAP); and the second at the identification of performance indicators that are related with the aspects and the provision of guidelines for their implementation (TEIP). This method has been developed after analysing the strengths, weaknesses and challenges of the existing techniques, the recommendations from the Environmental Management System (EMS) standards and the advice of specialists. This is a computer and science-based tool (www.eports.cat) that provides a quick calculation and outputs, and it is designed to be as user-friendly as possible in order to facilitate its completion by the user (i.e. port environmental manager). This new methodology is applicable to all types of ports no matter the size, geographical location or its commercial profile; it provides targeted and specific results for each one. La metodologia desenvolupada es diu EPORTS.CAT i consta de dues eines principals: la Tool for the identification and assessment of Environmental Aspects in Ports (TEAP) i la Tool for the identification and implementation of Environmental Indicators in Ports (TEIP).

Abstract:
As a consequence of globalisation, port performance has become increasingly important for international trade. Different port regions perform differently. The aim of this research is to identify factors that determine port performance and choice in a comparative study between two case ports in Europe and Asia. Specifically, this research aims to examine factor differences between two European and Asian ports‘ contexts; to identify the key factors that drive port performance and choice; to investigate the differences in importance and performance among the factors; to analyse how the importance and performance of factors varies for different ports; to analyse the role a port hinterland plays in port performance and choice; and to illustrate the usefulness of key findings for port stakeholders. The construct of importance factors is based on the literature. The research methodology was that of mixed methods to collect both qualitative and quantitative data in two port regions (China and UK) and was carried out in two phases. Phase one comprised semi-structured in-depth interviews. Phase two consisted of questionnaire-based surveys to validate the factors influencing port performance. The questionnaire surveys were distributed to port experts from 500 organisations and had a 50.8% response rate. Thematic analysis was used for qualitative data analysis of the data from the interviews. Methods for analysis of the data from the questionnaires included descriptive analysis, factor analysis, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, importance-performance analysis and other statistical validation and significance tests. The findings of this research suggest that ports wishing to outperform competitors can do so by improving the factors that are of high importance but currently perform poorly. This could also be achieved by improving performances on shipping services, shipping prices, overall logistics cost, logistics services and government support in descending order which is based on factor evaluation in this research. The thesis further analyses this result within the context of urgent, salient and basic factors based on IPA, including explicit & implicit importance. Shipping services and cost have a critical effect on port performance. Differences in port charges are the most significant differences in factor importance at the case ports of the Humber and Xiamen. Government support has the most significant differences in factor performance between the two case ports. This research is not without limitations. The analysis was restricted to two port regions in China and the UK and data used in this research were mainly generated from interviews and questionnaire surveys, responses to which are to some extent subjective.

Considering that Aguiar is a poet of today's time, in which the world is organized from an e-connected perspective, I propose, initially, a discussion about this new way of organizing the world, pointing out, in this discussion, the aspects of Aguiarian poetic making that are associated with technology and also talking about apparent freedom of speech and conduct that this time of cyberconnection makes believe there is, but that, in fact, it is only a modus operandi of the mechanisms of control of capital that operate in the regulation of the social body. I punctuate, in the sequence of the work, on the questions of Poiesis and Praxis in this perspective in which we are inserted and also inserts Aguiarian poetics. I then pass on the transits that the poet performs through the experimental poetry of the twentieth century and through the art of performance, and then analyzing Aguiarian poems that, from this perspective of experimentalist intercrossing, take place in the fields of visuality, writing and performance. In the course of all the discussion I bring to this dissertation, I seek to maintain that Aguiar's poetics, through the re-signification that he carries out both canonical concepts and social concepts, leads him to an unveiling (dévoiler) that leads him to resistance. Abstract:
Mots clés : Assemblage boulonné antiglissement, métallisation, pont routier en acier, fluage, relaxation<br>Steel bridge elements are exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as de-icing salts on roadways. These elements need a satisfactory level of protection against corrosion to preserve their long-term structural integrity. A very efficient solution that is now popular in Canada is metallization. Metallization is an anticorrosion coating formed by thermal spray of metals, usually zinc, onto the surface to protect. The protection of the steel substrate is ensured by both a physical barrier and a galvanic protection. Designs standards, such as the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code CAN/CSA S6-14, specify desired conditions for various faying surfaces and associated slip coefficients to be used in slip-critical connections. Currently, these standards do not address faying surface conditions that are metallized. Thus, bridge fabricators are compelled to mask off joint faying surfaces before metallizing, which is very expensive for the industry. Earlier studies investigated the short-duration slip resistance of high strength bolted connections with metallized faying surfaces. Results revealed greater slip resistance than the typical uncoated blast-cleaned Class B faying surface. In this research, creep resistance of slip-critical bolted joints with zinc-metallized faying surfaces is characterized, to ensure that the Class B slip resistance is still valid at long-term. The effect of the relaxation of the clamping force on the slip resistance is also evaluated. Results of this study have shown a satisfactory creep performance. Also, results revealed that the relaxation of the clamping force does not impact significantly the slip resistance of the metallized assemblies. This will likely to influence future code revisions and impact steel bridge fabrication in North America. Abstract:

Abstract:
Taarab in contemporary Zanzibar currently experiences great changes since the Nineties with the emerging and growing success of modern taarab. This has shocked the fans of the traditional style (taarab asilia) with musical and instrumental innovations, including powerful amplifiers and more danceable rhythms, but also textual innovations, using in their songs, commonly called mipasho, a sort of language and poetical imagery very open and non-disguised (Khamis 2002: 200). The perception of a split between the two musical and poetical styles is widely shared among the artists and fans of traditional taarab, but it actually tends to simplify the dynamics of continuity and change of this art deeply rooted within the social and political life of Zanzibar islands.

Abstract:
Nevertheless, returns of the post-seismic experiences as well as theoretical and experimental studies made by researchers and practice engineers allowed the art rules evolution related to the seismic behavior of bridges. One result of this evolution is the seismic performance based design (DBPS). In brief, the DBPS tries to design structures which will reach a certain limit state of performance when they are submitted to an earthquake of a given intensity. However, in the optics of the DBPS, it is essential to define the limit states of the main components of bridges, mainly for columns, in a measurable way rather than phenomenological. During the development of the fragility curves of bridges in Québec, it seemed that the limit states of the bridges columns were not clearly defined. An experimental research program was thus designed to determine the limit states of the reinforced concrete bridge columns. The project includes the testing of a large-scale reinforced concrete bridge column submitted to lateral cycles load in addition to a constant axial load which represented the real dead load level. The column reproduces the exact properties of the Chemin des Dalles bridge columns (Trois-Rivières, Québec). This research project aims to improve the evaluation of the seismic fragility of existing bridges of Québec road network and optimize the seismic design for future structures according to the performance based seismic approach. In particular, the project seeks to address the significant uncertainties which remain on the quantitative description of the limit states of the reinforced concrete bridge columns, particularly at the associated deformations level.

This work aims to a critical reading of the poetic work of Luciene Carvalho, from the context of hypermodernity and under the critical perspective of Performance Studies. In order to situate both Performance Studies and characterize the type of multifaceted subject that takes form in the verses of the author who is studied, we initially carried out a reflection from scholars as Gilles Lipovetsky (2004, 2005, 2015) and Zygmunt Bauman (1998, 2004, 2007a, 2007b, 2008) on contemporaneity, choosing to define it as hypermodernity, a new historical era that began in the mid-1990s and that is understood as a succession of post-modernity. As a result of these transformations of paradigms, multiple contexts had to be erected, which also required the subjects to reconfigure their way of connecting to these complex and not infrequently contradictory spaces. It is in this multifaceted environment that the poet-performer opts for a performance beyond the traditional mode of relation with the writing and that will result in its performances, since these, according to researchers as Azevedo (2004 and 2007) and Beigui (2011, 2012 and 2013), start from writing as an (bodily) experience on which it inscribes its textualities. The poet-performer, when multifaceted, is linked to the most varied and contradictory personas, such as those that refer to eroticism, religiosity, witchcraft or madness, re-signifying each of these senses according to its interest. Focusing closely on these figures, we try to demonstrate that the eroticism of the poet-performer is not a lifeless or empty practice, but as Bataille (2014) theorized, it is the eroticism of a substitute for religion in the search of attaining continuity at a time when metaphysical truths are weakened. In this sense, the religiosity formulated in the course of Luciene Carvalho's texts has, on the one hand, aspects of a dead faith, in other words, it does not transcend, on the other hand, the poet-performer is associated with pre-Christian or marginalized icons within Christianity to elaborate a peculiar mode of mystical relationship. Considering these characteristics, the madness that the author uses makes complex her repertoire of performance in an environment of confusing configuration. Thus, madness and its developments work, strategically, as points of connection and justify the metamorphoses of a subject that seeks, in imbricated ways, to signify its existence to the world.

The present research work aims to determine the impact of the characteristics of the port and the container terminal in the performance of the container terminal. How to increase the performance level of a container terminal and explain it success? The objectives are to analyze the influence of the location of the port (position-port), the port infrastructure (hard-port) and port services (soft-port) in terminal performance and evaluate the effect of the terminal infrastructure (hard-terminal) and terminal services (soft-terminal) in terminal performance.

Ismail, A. B. "The performance of ports on the periphery : the impact of port supply chain integration, sustainability advantage and spatial characteristics." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2016. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3002979/.

Abstract:
Due to intense competition, ports are desperately searching for new ways to increase performance and gain a sustainable edge into today’s dynamic and competitive business environment. Literature has deeply discussed the performance of large and established ports that hold hub status; however, studies on the performance of small and medium-sized ports (SMPs) are scarce. Even though there are studies pertaining to SMPs, it is more from the port development perspective. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the competitive performance of SMPs that are not on the main maritime shipping lanes and face challenges in attracting port users to make port of calls; nevertheless, they are proximate to large hinterland markets, and are thus called ports on the periphery. In particular, this study intends to seek, identify and explore the appropriate potential strategies (identified as spatial characteristics, port supply chain integration strategy, and sustainability advantage) that are able to bring continuous prosperity to the business performance of ports on the periphery; to synthesise the presence of the causal theoretical relationships between identified potential strategies and the performance of ports on the periphery; and to investigate to what extent the identified potential strategies are able to continuously contribute to the performance of such ports. The research philosophy on which this study relies is the positivism paradigm and a questionnaire survey was identified as the most appropriate instrument by which to gather data and information from participants. Port stakeholders such as port/terminal operators, port authorities, shipping lines and freight forwarders that are experts in the port business operations were identified as the relevant individuals or organisations to receive the questionnaire. To analyse the data, standard Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) in SPSS version 22 was employed. In particular, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) or preliminary analysis was then conducted in sequence to determine the right statistical analysis technique to be employed, and standard MRA analysis was used to conduct the inferential analysis of the current study. The results show that the spatial characteristics of peripheral ports and the integration strategy of a port into the supply chain play a significant role in adding more sustainability benefits to the transportation supply chain and subsequently contribute to the performance of peripheral ports. The results can be used by peripheral ports as a guideline to promote themselves as a sustainable supply chain network in association with spatial characteristics and the strategy of port supply chain integration. This advantage can be a huge and attractive springboard for such ports to strengthen their performance since regulation on environmental issues has become an important agenda not only among government sectors (regulatory pressures) and non-government organisations (NGOs-communities pressures) but also among suppliers and customers (market pressures-port users) in contending with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in particular carbon emissions by logistic activities and operations.

Arnaud, Busson.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Hong, Lae Hyung. "Ports' supply chain management (SCM) strategies and their impacts on performance : a partial least squares approach on the users of Busan Port." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2009. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55839/.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on the combined view of Resource Based Theory (RBT) and Supply Chain Management Theory (SCMT), this study aims to investigate the impact of Port Authorities' (PAs') SCM strategies on Port focused Supply Chains' (PSCs) SCM strategies, PSCs' resources, and PSCs' Supply Chain Performance (SCP). Considering the different roles of PAs and private players in ports, the concept 'Port focused Supply Chain' (PSC), including container terminals, inland transport companies and depots, is adopted for the current study. After a literature review and exploratory factor analysis, twelve specific variables, i.e. PAs' 'concessions', 'using IT', 'marketing', 'support for hinterland and FTZ', PSCs' 'vertical integration', 'relationship orientation', 'skills', 'physical 'resources', and PSCs' 'reliability', 'flexibility', 'costs', and 'service effectiveness' were chosen for the PLS (Partial Least Squares) analysis. The questionnaire survey was distributed to 1,208 surveyees, i.e. experts in headquarters, branches, agents of the shipping liner companies and freight forwarders using Korean and Chinese ports. From 12th March to 3rd May 2007,124 responses were collected. It is shown that PAs' 'using IT' strategy can positively affect PSCs' SCP through 'PSCs' relationship orientation', and 'skills'. Among the variables of PSCs' SCM, 'relationship orientation' makes a stronger impact on PSCs' resources than 'vertical integration'. 'Skills' is more powerful in determining PSCs' SCP than 'physical resources'. While 'physical resources' has a significant relationship with two variables (cost and service effectiveness), 'Skills' has positive influences on all the four variables of PSCs' SCP. Singapore's SCP exceeded the SCP scores of other rivals, i.e. Hong Kong, Busan, Shanghai, and Gwangyang port. Except Shanghai port, the container cargo volumes of the other four ports were consistent with their SCP. In conclusion, the implication for PAs can be that PSCs' performance can be improved by utilizing coherent SCM strategies. Further research investigating the impacts of PAs' SCM strategies is recommended.

Martín, Alcalde Enrique. "Strategies for improving import yard performance at container marine terminals." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/277420.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of containerization and its continuous development involves changes and technological innovations in containerships and maritime container terminals. In the current era of "gigantism", despite existing fleet overcapacity, shipping companies are booking larger and fuel-efficient vessels to benefit from economies of scale and to reduce operating costs. Consequently, port terminals have to cope with unprecedented container volumes and increasing demands, as a result, handling operations are likely to be subject to delay. In this context, container terminals are dealing with the huge challenge of readjusting themselves in order to, on one hand, improve productivity and level of service offered to the customers (minimize turnaround time) and, on the other hand, to manage terminal handling operations efficiently with the aim of reducing operating costs and becoming more competitive. Moreover, considering that adapting facilities and terminal infrastructures involves large investment and given the lack of space in many urban ports for expanding the operational area, the improvement of handling operations efficiency is more important than ever. Thus, many efforts are required to improve the productivity of container terminals by introducing efficient solutions and optimization techniques to decision-making processes and, on the other side, introducing technological improvements such as the automation of handling equipment. In light of this, this thesis is focused on the optimization of handling operations in the storage yard, which is considered to be the most complex terminal subsystem since terminal performance depends on its efficiency. In particular, it attempts to: (1) determine optimal storage space utilization by considering the yard inventory and congestion effects on terminal performance; (2) introduce new allocating storage strategies with the aim of minimizing the amount of rehandling moves, which are considered to be the most important cause of inefficiency in container yard terminals, and; (3) develop a generic storage pricing schedule to encourage customers to pick up their containers promptly and, as a consequence, reduce the average duration of stay, avoiding yard congestion. In order to tackle these issues, two different analytical models are introduced in this thesis. The first one aims to forecast storage yard inventory by dealing explicitly with stochastic behavior, yard inventory peaks and seasonal fluctuations. The second one, which is based on probabilistic and statistical functions, is derived to estimate the average number of rehandles when containers with different departure probabilities are mixed in the same stack. Finally, the numerical experiments presented in this thesis prove the usefulness of the different analytical models, yard design methods, cost models and operative and tactical strategies developed herein. These can be applied by other researchers, planners and terminal operators to optimize the yard handling processes, to improve their efficiency rates and to increase terminal throughput without incurring large investment. By being technically efficient, the terminal will be more cost-efficient as well, resulting in the overall optimization of terminal performance.

Abstract:
The numerous benefits of high performance steel (HPS) raised great interest in bridge structures in the United States. It could be as positive to introduce this modern material in Canada, but the fatigue resistance and economic have not been well characterized. As part of a specific bridge project in Quebec, a critical fatigue detail on a hybrid steel girder has been identified and reproduced to scale. An experimental program was used to test four (4) samples to compare their fatigue strength with CAN/CSA (2006). Considering the insufficient number of data for the moment, is it statistically impossible to specify the actual fatigue resistance of the target detail. A cost study was also conducted. According to the configurations studied, the savings can reach 6% to 20% only by the use of hybrid girders system with HPS, compared to conventional steel girders.

Pati, Debajyoti. "Maximizing the benefits of courtroom POEs in design decision support and academic inquiry through a unified conceptual model." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/6843.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-occupancy evaluations represent an important missed opportunity. While POEs are often used to inform design guides, and to support facility management, they are seldom used to support design decision-making. While there are several technical, methodological, and cultural impediments to the ongoing use of POE results in design, characteristics of POE data and data structure is an important, and often overlooked, impediment. Some evaluators have attempted to resolve this problem by involving actively as consultants in design teams or involving users, such as Placemaking or Process Architecture. Recent advances in conceptual data modeling provide another strategy to interface POE findings and design decision-making. This thesis uses EXPRESS modeling language to develop a conceptual data structure for POE data, and integrate POE data with as-built building descriptions. While this effort has the potential to develop an improved way to structure POE data and make it more useful, it is also an extension of ISO-STEP. This study develops a data structure based on post-occupancy evaluations of state and federal trial courtrooms conducted by the researcher. Thirty-one courtrooms were evaluated, resulting in usable data from 93 courtroom users in 26 courtrooms. An EXPRESS-G schema was developed and was translated into a relational database for holding data and running queries. The investigator illustrated a range of query-generated outcomes to support decision-making during design and design review. Such outcomes include exploring existing courtrooms, comprehending the types of design decisions implemented across federal and state courtrooms, identifying design decisions that have been rated favorably or otherwise by courtroom users, rating design decisions based on evaluation data from existing courtrooms, and predicting a designed environments supportiveness to task performance. Further, multivariate analysis of the POE data provides the first scientific investigation of courtrooms as work settings. Finally, eight key performance indicators of courtrooms were developed based on the POE data.

Abstract:
The research aims to understand the perception of the performance concept by cluster actors. We focus on clusters which are not controlled by a leading firm, but include strategic governance institutions. Despite a vast literature on clusters, researches on the perception of their performance are still emerging. Supported by an interpretative framework to clarify what can cover the concept of performance in a cluster, this research, mobilizing social representation theory, explores the perception of heterogeneous actors composing French seaports, using the methodology of cognitive maps. 36 interviews were conducted with participants of the main French Seaports. The results show that the shared representations are fairly limited in terms of meta-criterias and performance determinants, but identifies common logics, paradigms and representations classes. The results also show that there is a frequent focalisation of the perceptions on very few keys actors involved in the service chain. The study concludes on the management control perspectives in these clusters
