Full textEven if the role of the function social management control in the improvement of the performance of companies are more and more recognized more than before, this link is still subject of several searches. Several authors tried to light this "black box". In spite of what was validated, many still remain to discover. In literature, we find various theoretical approaches through which several authors tried to validate the relevance of this link. We held the approach of possibility to identify the factors which influence the practices of the social management control in the Moroccan companies and which can consequently improve the performance of these entities

Full textThis thesis is composed of three chapters that examine corporate social responsibility (CSR) within firms in controversial sectors. In the first chapter, we evaluate patterns of investment in CSR for 565 US publicly traded companies in eight controversial sectors between 1991 and 2013 by assessing the relationship between CSR and Corporate Social Irresponsibility (CSI). We show that firms in controversial sectors compensate for their CSI by engaging in strategic CSR areas such as environmental protection and community development with a lack of engagement towards other areas, such as corporate governance. In the second chapter, we determine whether engagement in specific CSR activities for 499 US companies in controversial sectors decreases their financial risk. We show that engaging in specific CSR activities considered as strategic reduces idiosyncratic and total risk for some controversial industries; and that poor engagement in corporate governance activities increases firm risk. In the third chapter, we investigate CSR reporting as an important mechanism for stakeholder accountability in the context of an environmental crisis. We perform a case study analysis of the CSR strategies used by the Canadian oil company Enbridge in its response to the July 2010 Kalamazoo spill and revealed that Enbridge's CSR reports were frequently optimistic and failed to describe the company's inability to deal with known safety problems that led to spill; and underestimated both the volume of the spill and the difficulty of the cleanup, thus making it difficult to distinguish the effects of the CSR efforts from the effects of other contextual and external factors

Full textThis research aims to study the potential link existing between the different environments of Moroccan manufacturing firms, external (institutional and regulatory) as well as internal (relationships with stakeholders), and their economic and financial performance measured by profitability ratios. The general context of the study is the openness of Moroccan’s borders to European’s products in 2012, and the signature of the “Advanced statute” with European Union (EU) in 2008. In consequence of this, Moroccans firms will have to compete with European firms, which will impact their competitiveness, profitability and efficiency. The investment climate (IC) can therefore play an important role. In addition to that, Moroccanfirms will have to comply with European norms in terms of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (CSR). In the first part of our study, we aim to identify the determining factors of the IC that impact the economic and financial performance of Moroccan firm. The results show that the taxation (in term of conformity) has a positive impact on performance while the fiscal’s iniquity has a negative effect. In addition, the disloyal informal sector competition has a negative impact on firms’ performance. The regulatory environment plays a role in a sense that firm’s performance is negatively associated with firm’s activity constraints, but positively related to firm’s export administrative constraints. Our results show also non significant link with the financing. In the second part, we measure the social and environmental engagement of Moroccan’s firms based on a measure of corporate social performance (CSP) created from perceptual data. We verified then the potential link existing between this CSP measure and the financialperformance. The results show that no consensus toward a theory is emerging: the stakeholder’s theory is validated for the social dimension (relation with employees) of CSP while the “classic” theory is validated for the other dimensions (environment, etc.). At last, the social commitment of Moroccan’s firms toward their employees seems to be an important dimension of the CSR, while the other dimensions are not

Full textThe thesis reveals the links between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and organizational knowledge, opting resolutely for a strategic perspective. Taking the model of social performance as a starting point, the research examines how theories of organizational learning and knowledge renew the strategic approach to CSR, hitherto focused on finding either a direct link between social performance and financial performance, or an indirect one between social performance, reputation and financial performance. The question of how knowledge is created during the processing of social demands, and what role it plays on business performance is the backbone of the study. The flavor and fragrance industry (F&F) deals routinely with issues of social performance. This qualitative study was conducted in six leading F&F companies, three of which are major cases. In this industry, where the core business is the design and manufacturing of fragrances and flavors, regulation is strict and customer requirements regarding product safety, process security and protection of the natural environment are high. This industry is a promising field of investigation for this research question. This exploratory study unveils numerous mechanisms of knowledge creation related to social responsibility, which emerge out of behavioral changes due to intense internal and external cooperation, and tacit and explicit knowledge transfers. The created knowledge increases individual skills, the collective expertise of the firm, and the organizational capacity for innovation and risk control. As a result, the organization develops its competitive advantage, provided that it manages the acquired knowledge to build inimitable dynamic capabilities

Full textThis dissertation investigates the consequences of the complex relationships between firms and various non-market stakeholders. The first essay examines if corporate political activity (CPA) helps sustain competitive benefits. Prior literature does not address this question, only whether CPA increases profits – with mixed results over short timescales. We theorize about how political capital affects the regression-to-the-mean of profits through firm and industry persistence mechanisms. Using data on over 6,000 firms from 14 democratic countries, we estimate time-varying, firm-specific performance persistence coefficients with random-coefficient models - and profit volatility measures. Triangulation over various identification methods suggests that the half-life of political capital is shorter than expected, and also compared with other strategy interventions. Political connections are marginally effective at sustaining performance and reducing volatility, delaying profit convergence by only 0.180 years – and with no effect beyond seven years. These modest CPA benefits are further curbed by legislative constraints and political stability. The second essay highlights the tradeoffs involved in the firms’ relationship with two non-market stakeholders: politicians and social activists. This study argues that the presence of board political connections increases the susceptibility of the firm to activist actions – owing to, i. the conflicting objectives of these two non-market actors, and ii. the perceived higher sensitivity of connected firms to societal expectations. Furthermore, using a simple analytical model, I demonstrate that this effect is strongly contingent on the firms’ level of ESG (employee, social and governance policies) adoption – such that, at higher levels of ESG adoption, the liability of connectedness dissipates (or diminishes considerably). Both propositions find adequate support in the empirical analysis.Theoretically, by revealing a firm-specific determinant of activist actions, this study takes us a step closer towards defining the ‘corporate opportunity structure’ for activism, while also better characterizing the complex trade-offs involved in the firms’ relationship with various stakeholders. Finally, the third essay examines firms’ motivations for adopting CSR (corporate social responsibility) practices. I adopt the ‘risk-insurance’ view of firms’ CSR engagement to argue that when faced with an abrupt change in the institutional landscape leading to considerable muting of the rules and regulations pertaining to sustainability, firms would be keen to proactively improve corporate social performance (CSP) in order to neutralize the liability associated with being embedded in a low CSR-emphasis regime. The study uses Trump’s win in the 2016 US Presidential election as an exogenous event that resulted in a marked reduction in the US govt’s emphasis on sustainability related policies. Diff-in-diff analysis on a matched sample of US and non-US firms suggest that, on average, US firms improved their sustainability footprint after Trump’s election. Considerable heterogeneity was observed based on firms’ ideological proclivities: non-partisan firms reported a significantly lower magnitude of improvement compared to their partisan counterparts

Full textProduct market competition is considered, in corporate finance, as a governance mechanism. It indeed theoretically reduces managerial opportunism at the expense of shareholders. How is this phenomenon actually reflected in reality and what are the concrete consequences at the firm level? This thesis proposes an investigation of this transversal question through three studies. The first chapter reviews existing measures of competitive intensity, identifies their limitations and proposes an alternative method based on financial returns. The second chapter studies the effect of competition on mergers and acquisitions. The third chapter examines the impact of competitive pressure on corporate social and environmental initiatives. The empirical results suggest that -1- intense competition between two firms leads to negative correlations of their stock returns, -2- mergers and acquisitions are more efficiency-driven when competition becomes more intense, and -3- socially responsible initiatives are more strategic under competitive pressure. These conclusions support the theoretical argument that competition exerts a pressure on managers to make efficient decisions, and more specifically to act in the best interest of shareholders. Nevertheless, the third chapter of the thesis raises that intense competition is not statistically associated with better social performance towards the environment and society at large (peripheral stakeholders)

Full textHow does one measure WISEs’ broad goal of inclusion? And how does this measurement affect the partnerships that WISEs form with their public stakeholders? These questions pertain to a strand of economics that encourages new ways to frame performance, particularly in a policy-making context. Our thesis investigates this issue through an international comparison between France (a country pursuing Neo-Weberian-type reforms - NWS) and Denmark (pursuing New Public Governance-type reforms - NPG), using public value theory (PVT) as an analytical framework. The novel application of PVT that we propose leads us to identify two causal mechanisms associated to performance measurement. The first one is attributable to WISEs’ public management environment (NWS or NPG), which establishes the model through which they co-create public value. The second causal mechanism is the strategic intents that underpin WISEs’ performance measurement in the context of their partnership with public actors: capitalising on PVT, we identify seven intents which are intertwined with their environment. These two mechanisms allow us to better comprend the issues associated to the notion of performativity (the implications that the measurement of a social phenomenon can have on this very phenomenon) and drive us to identify leads allowing to mitigate these challenges

Full textEconomic operators are facing a sharp increase in competition combined with social and environmental concerns that have become of the essence. From this observation, it seems that the performance, be it economic, social or environmental, has become an value that is part of obligations, or creates itself obligations. It will sometimes be outside the contract and imposed by the law itself. In this sense, the legislator requires that the remuneration of certain companies executives is compulsorily indexed on performance criteria. But the performance will sometimes be internal to the contract and will be an essential element for the latter. These events reflect an overall movement making it necessary to construct a legal dissertation on performance, a new reading prism that has become inevitable and particularly crucial. Despite the attractiveness of the quest for performance, the law is seeking a point of balance likely to allow economic development in the best conditions, backed by respect for the environment, natural, human, even societal. It is in this perspective that the dynamics of this study is built. It understands performance as achieving a goal, with efficient means and methods, while limiting financial losses and adverse effects. Performance is the new key to reading life in society, and business law is one of the first relays

Full textThe term sustainable development is today, at least in France, familiar to the general public. It was used, explained and adapted by several actors in society. The government, the media and NGOs are now carrying this concept, which generates multiple pressures on the company to modify its behavior. The company must become more accountable. But beyond words, what does it do? Does it adapt its structures, its information system or its culture in terms of constraints? Are there different types of control systems? If so, why they occur and what are their impacts on corporate performances? To answer these questions, we will build a contingency model and we will offer a typology of corporate social responsibility control systems. This typology will allow to describe and to explain the corporate social responsibility control systems of the major European companies

Full textThis doctoral thesis in management sciences questions the impacts of collaborations between companies and the non-governmental sphere. It takes into consideration the extent to which the NGOs contribute to the overall performance of firms through their social responsibility. The state-of-the-art of the key words with regards to our topic has highlighted a threefold expansion within companies: first, an openness of their governance which translates into the introduction of new stakeholders in the core of the society; secondly, a deepening of performance that is no longer observed solely from an economic and financial perspective but also from its social and environmental aspects; and finally, the development of performance measurement tools. As a matter of fact, economic reporting is now complemented by sustainable development reports. This expansion of measurement tools is sometimes characterized as an integrated reporting that systematizes the link between the financial and the extra-financial.The challenges of this qualitative research with an exploratory aim are threefold: firstly, it addresses understanding the involvement of the actors by characterizing their posture within partnerships but also by shedding light on their motivations to collaborate. Secondly, it is necessary to determine the modalities of the partnerships that exist between the firms and the NGOs, specifying the notion of "dialogue" and the characteristics of strategic partnerships. Finally, this research addresses measuring the contribution of NGOs to the overall performance by analyzing its impacts under the prism of a four-axial performance and more specifically using the methodology of Integrated Reporting. Our research has been materialized through a documentary and a statistical study of 301 companies and NGOs that revolved around their socio-economic sphere. Based on this sample, we further conducted 44 semi-structured interviews with companies and NGOs and completed our research with a case study on the strategic partnership between Michelin and WWF. In this case study we have on one hand interviewed internal stakeholders, such as those in charge of cooperation, and on the other hand, external stakeholders, such as the Deputy Managing Director of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) ) and the General Manager of the Union of Professionals for Tires (Syndicat des Professionnels du Pneu - SPP)

Full textOur study seeks to describe how the interactions between CSR and financial performance are affected based on the theory of resource-based view (RBV) and the instrumental view of stakeholder theory while considering CSR as a public good which constitutes a coherent extension of the general interest and which contributes to the maximization of social well-being. We are testing the role of corporate reputation concerning the relationship of CSR to financial performance. Empirically, we use panel data of 7 years (2006-2012) for 324 US companies. CSR is measured according to ESG performance criteria (environmental, social and governance) by the MSCI Extra-Financial Rating Agency. Regarding the financial performance, we use a market measure (Tobin's Q) and an accounting measure (ROE). The results emphasize the existence of a relation that has the shape of a virtuous circle between CSR and financial performance with the market measure of financial performance. As for reputation, the present study shows that it has a significant impact on the relation of CSR to financial performance. The results also emphasize that the significant positive relationship of CSR to financial performance can be found particularly in social performance and governance performance. Our study indicates the governance and environmental performances likewise the performance which can influence the reputation of the company

Full textShareholder activism in France is relatively a new phenomenon compared to the Anglo-Saxons countries. Activist shareholders are increasingly present in French companies. Their introduction into the capital of a company is a threat to some managers, heedless of standards of good governance and favoring their interests over those of other shareholders. The tools used by shareholders (especially minority shareholders) to exercise control over the management are different from one country to another. This difference can be explained by the degree of protection of minority shareholders and the regulatory framework. In France, submitting an external resolution by activist shareholders, allows them to control the board of directors and force them to maximize shareholder value and serve their interests. Our study investigates the impact of proposals on the market performance of French listed companies between 2002 and 2015 and presents the determinants of success of submitting resolutions at General Annual Meetings

Full textThis thesis presents an individual level investigation of, on one side, the link between independent directors and corporate social performance (CSP) and, on the other, the association of institutional investors to, again, CSP. The real power and the genuine impact of directors on the performance of the firm have always been subject to a lot of discussion. This is even truer with independent directors. To give insight into this fundamental question, I look at a non-financial performance metric: the CSP. I investigate whether there is an individual a priori regarding CSP issues by independent directors. I use directors’ data for US firms in the 1999–2014 period as well as CSP scores (global, environmental and social). By using a two-way fixed effect for both firms and directors, I discover that there is an association between individual independent directors and the environmental dimension of CSP. However, I uncover the fact that this association is considerably weaker than the relation between inside directors and CSP. In a second set of tests, I link individual attributes to the independent directors fixed effects obtained before. In this second regression, I uncover the fact that observable characteristics of independent directors account for a very small part of the association of individuals to CSP. It underlines the fact that using observable characteristics, as it is often done in the literature, might not be sufficient to uncover the fundamental association between individuals and a given performance metric. However, the method used here accounts for both observable and unobservable characteristics of independent directors. I also investigate the behaviours of institutional investors when it comes to attain a specific CSP from the firms they are invested in or plan to invest in. As an investor-level ownership measure, I compute the proportion invested in a firm over the total declared assets of an institutional investor. By computing individual institutional investor effects (similar to fixed effects), I first test whether institutional investors care about CSP, which some do. I then test the two basic hypotheses proposed by Hirschman (1970) when it comes to institutional investors' ability to obtain a given level of non-financial performance: (1) they can either sell or buy shares (the feet approach) or (2) they can try to influence the executives by having (in)formal discussions (the voice approach). I estimate my individual effect in two ways: observing the shareholding variable prior or after collecting the CSP score of a firm. I find out that institutional investors as a group adopt both approaches. Nevertheless, a fair portion of them seems to choose only one (often the feet approach) according to their need in CSP.

Full textThe objective of this research was to identify the different processes and key actors involved in defining executive's income but also the logic with which decisions are made. To address this issue, a three-step approach was used in which a research question was raised in each one. First of all, the link between performance and income in the French context will be assessed. Then, the role of governance mechanisms on executives ‘salary will be established. Finally, the different actors and mechanisms in determining salary’s policy will be analyzed. For each article, a conceptual framework was developed based on two complementary theoretical perspectives. The first two items are positioned in the disciplinary perspective shareholder, while the third item is placed in wider governance. Theoretical frameworks presented were faced with the test of reality. This Analysis was conducted through quantitative method for items 1 and 2 (linear regression) and qualitative method in the third article (Vinci case study). The first results show that CEO’s incomes from listed French companies are positively related to shareholder wealth. In addition, and contrary to Roe’s hypothesis (2001), the total compensation of French leaders have an incentive base greater than in U.S. companies. Secondly, none of the mechanisms studied (board of directors, compensation committee and ownership structure) has a significant impact on the sensitivity of Salary - performance. Finally, the decision-making process concerning executive’s compensation may be strongly influenced by the leader himself (due to relational networks or behavioral biases) and other stakeholder governance mechanisms (media and judicial remedy)

The global performance of companies’ acts on all the dimensions of the cycle of life of the product / service: from design to delivery to the consumer, reducing costs to be able to offer the best price to the customer. This optimization’s logistics endwise of the chain has become a vital necessity for the sustainability of the company.Today, businesses in general and logistics providers in particular, are confronted with the realization that modeling their supply chain needs to be reviewed more efficient and especially that the impacts of their activity must be taken into account : integrating environmental constraints in the management of their supply activities, distribution, transportation, ... and supply, distribution, of transport,… and to release some ways for economic, social and environmental progress, that must be the strategic challenge of the next decade.Hence, the need to adopt a specific management aiming to reconcile classical practices leading to the global performance, and innovative and specific practices that promote on sustainable development. Our research will treat the following problematic: how to realize the global performance of SMEs in the Transportation and Logistics sector in Morocco, by adopting the practices of sustainable development? Thus, we will treat in this work, a model of specific Management able to lead the Moroccan logistics providers to the global performance, while reconciling the various financial, social and environmental challenges For this purpose, we ask a key question: how the sustainable development is presented as an opportunity to achieve sustainable performance?

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the study of the role of State intervention in the Mediterranean countries, and this in the promotion of the responsible approach. This doctoral work provides a general review of the study of the role of environmental factors in the context of sustainable qualified development. It discusses, among other things, changes in the perception of CSR policy in the Mediterranean region. In our study on CSR, we focus our research on both voluntary and obligatory approaches, following institutional constraints, and subject them to comparison. In doing so, we focus in particular on how the CSR concept has been strongly related to the notion of environmental sustainability. The first part of this work presents an exhaustive and critical review of the literature on responsible approaches. In the second part, which is essentially factual, we frame the empirical and institutional foundations of a green growth model. Estimation and validation are presented at the last chapter level. The results highlight the relationship between CSR and governance as regards sustainable growth and sustainable environmental-friendly growth, at the macroeconomic level. The results obtained allow us to confirm that firstly, CSR plays a positive role in order to improve the quality of the environment. Secondly, various approaches overlap and tie together to propose environmental-performance scenarios throughout the Mediterranean.Thirdly, it appears that the restrictive intervention of the state weakens CRE efficiency, added to this the impact on -CSR- of the disparity at the institutional level and between countries of different development level. Finally, according to the results obtained, we believe that the interaction between the will and the duty to carry out responsible actions could in turn constitute/ lead to a perfection in terms of ecological sustainability for Mediterranean-bordering countries

Exploring the management system of health and safety at work has led us to highlight not only the international law sources of the Moroccan labor code, but also the different methods of managing health and safety in companies. We also propose a statistical study to better understand the management, prevention processes and technical management of health and safety within Moroccan companies. At the same time, in order to propose a management model as a basis for growth and economic and social development of the institution, intervention research was also conducted in a Moroccan company. According to which, companies should meet the needs of individuals on a large scale, while ensuring sustainable development. Thisrequires a continuous process of performance evaluation of thecompany to make sure it moves forward to sustainable mass customization. In this thesis, we focused on sustainable mass customizing enterprises’ performance evaluation, more particularly we addressed the question: how can we help sustainablemass customizing enterprises measuring and improving their performance? We have proposed a conceptual model of the sustainable mass customizing enterprise (SMC-E) where we grouped enterprise objects impacting enterprise performance. Such a model provided the basis for building a simulation model aimed at evaluating different improvement scenarios of the performance by using indicators. Improvement scenarios are identified with the help of an influence diagram which tracks the causal links between performance inductors and indicators. These latter are chosen and prioritized using a three steps method based on interviews. We have proposed a general methodology to put together coherently all the proposed tools and methods and developed a demonstrator as a first implementation effort. The proposition is illustrated with a case study inthe kitchen furniture sector that showed its usefulness and pointed out several improvement rooms

Full textThe Subject of this thesis is to analyze the determiners of the community involvement of a company (RSE) in an emerging country such as Morocco. The purpose of the present research is to analyze this relation empirically. In fact, the new international economic environment characterized by deep changes, particularly, economic and financial globalization as well as the important regulatory and technological modifications that are taking place nowadays tend to give the priority to other strategic orientations relating to the prospects of sustainable development, and clarifying the societal commitment in managerial practices. The main goal of any company is to ensure its sustainability to the benefit of its customers, its shareholders and its collaborators. A company can become a committed social actor and not simply content itself with being an economic agent generating wealth. It can also get involved and adhere to better positioning itself with regard to the sustainable development which requires the production and sale within the best economic conditions while keeping a good image, namely, its ethical behavior, and by guaranteeing that its products are socially humanly and ecologically correct. Thus it can reconcile the safeguarding of the environment, social equity and the financial and economic requirements. Therefore, two parts were devoted to elucidating the various questions raised in this respect: The first part presents a review of the theoretical and conceptual approaches of the social responsibility of a company and its overall Performance and the potential links between these two components. The second part is devoted to the epistemological and methodological positioning, to the presentation of the model and the research hypotheses, as well as the analysis of the results of the empirical study. The results make it possible to answer our question: What are the determiners of the community involvement of the certified Moroccan companies RSE?

On an empirical level, CSR practicescontinue to spread and spread daily in companies around the world. However, the debateon its impact on business performance is no less arduous between those who support thethesis of a positive impact and those who support that of a negative or neutral impact. Allarmed with research and studies done on the subject. Nevertheless, in all cases, the issue offunding CSR is a problem for many practitioners and researchers. Our research proposes to study the question of the articulation of socio-economicmanagement and CSR and its impact on the overall performance of the company in thecontext of an SME in the computer and engineering services sector in Morocco (CSES)and to evaluate how this combination could meet both the need for companies to besocially responsible, the challenge posed for an SME, the financing of a CSR approach andthe fundamental need for a company to be performance. Our approach, in this sense, is based on the conduct of a transformative interventionresearch in order to drive change within the company, case of our experimentation, and toanswer concrete management problems and performance reduction she suffered. To do this, we opted for a socio-economic intervention to deploy a self-financed CSRapproach. In other words, our challenge is to finance the CSR approach within the company byrecycling the hidden costs of the company and by releasing its potential for innovationthrough the improvement of the interaction between behaviors and the structures of thecompany. The results of our research show that the socio-economic management of CSR not onlyallows an SME to self-finance its CSR approach and to integrate CSR practices into itsmanagement mode but above all to generate a global and sustainable performance.By releasing the human and social potential of the company, the socio-economic management of CSR has helped to activate a virtuous circle in the company

Full textCompanies are undergoing a proliferation of norms and standards to control the impacts of their activities on society. A standard consists of providing "rules of the game" to regulate human behavior and limit the risks of malfunctioning and negative externalities. The neo-institutional theory considers that respecting standards is a sine qua non condition to remain legitimate in its market. Nevertheless, as the theory of Tétranormalization shows, norms and standards are abundant, changing, complex, costly and sometimes contradictory. A strategic choice as to the reasoned integration of standards seems inevitable to maintain the survival and development capacity of the company. We conduct a cross-sectional qualitative survey of nine companies of different sizes and sectors. The results show that managers who try to deal with both exogenous norms (those "born" outside the firm) and endogenous norms (those "born" inside the firm). At the same time, we are conducting a qualimetric research-intervention study in an SME to improve its standards integration strategy. We measure the hidden costs and performances related to integration and standards gaps. By participating in the improvement process, we identify the selection criteria for the reasoned integration of an exogenous standard. Finally, we experiment with pedagogical methods to facilitate the integration of the company's endogenous standards into the professional practices of employees

Full textThe study of the development of ESG performance in Lebanese SMEs proves its importance in the fact that these companies are looking for sustainable solutions to deal with the different political crises and their significant repercussions on the country’s economy. Our research is committed to highlight via a qualitative exploratory study of four Lebanese SMEs if these companies are aware of the ESG performance criteria, underline the role of managers, stakeholders, and the adoption of ESG standards in promoting responsible practices. Lebanese SMEs are often neophytes’ grounds for CSR. Their main challenges include improving their economic and financial performance and especially their survival. The ESG commitment of Lebanese SMEs is mainly justified by the manager’s beliefs and values, the improvement of economic and financial performance and sometimes by the adoption of ESG standards. There are many brakes especially the lack of financial resources mainly due to economic and political crisis

Full textThe so called « BoP » (for Bottom/Base of the Pyramid) strategies of companies involve products/services creation at the base of the economic pyramid that is 4 billion people living on less than 9$/day. Researchers and professionals express interest in this type of strategy but point out the difficulty of simultaneously obtaining economic performance (for the firm) and social performance (for the BoP market). Our doctoral research is in line with the following research questions: "What are the determinants of economic and social performance of BoP strategies? Does the relationship exist between these types of performance? To answer it, a three phase methodological design has been developed: (I) a case survey method based on 77 observations of BoP strategies, (II) a quantitative empirical study based on 316 professionals, (III) a discussion on results for a theoretical proposition called white ocean. The results show: to achieve the economic and social performances, the company must, (1) have economic and social motivations, (2) acquire and accumulate knowledge in the field, (3) adapt price, communications, product/service but not distribution methods/channels, (4) make social alliances and (5) limit the influence of the institutions, local stakeholders and shareholders

Full textC'est pourquoi cette recherche se propose :
- d'évaluer l'influence des stratégies de lobbying des entreprises sur leur création de valeur ;
- cherche à générer de la valeur pour l'actionnaire en fondant un avantage concurrentiel ;
- est susceptible d'échouer sous la contrainte de pressions isomorphiques externes et de dysfonctionnements internes à l'entreprise.

Full textExecutive remuneration is a major issue in the corporate governance theme. In practice as well as in theory a debate still exists as to how executive compensation levels and structures can be explained. Although many different theories can be and are actually used to explain executive pay, the field is still dominated by the contract approach of agency theory as introduced by Jensen and Meckling (1976). The theories can be classified into three types: economic, political and psychological approach. Incorporating such a view in an attempt to explain executive pay broadens the scope and provides more conclusive explanations in the current debate. Our research explores a sample of the companies listed on the SBF 250 over the period 2002-2005. The results give little support to the agency theory: executive pay is not correlated to firm performance. However, political approach and symbolic approach show that human links between Boards of directors and the nature of the controlling shareholder do influence executive compensation. This thesis provides several statistical tests performed on different components of compensation (fixed salary, annual bonus, incentive, etc. ) to make up for the shortcomings of linear regression models

Full textThe goal of this research is to identify the determinants of the performance of Small and Medium-sized technological Enterprises (SME). This thesis explores their performance through two experiences : a quantitative study on organizational learning and a qualitative one concerning the contributions of managers' social network. This research follows the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm in highlighting knowledge (Spender and Grant, 1996) and relational resources (Dyer and Singh, 1998), which were identified as " mother " resources. Relational rents through a complex social meshing are based on SME managers' social network. This system feeds technological SME relational learning that promotes innovation and allows to better control the environment through uncertainty reduction

Full textAt present, due to the rapid growth in the demand for transparency in corporate reporting, sustainability reporting (CSR reports) is becoming increasingly frequent and an important topic of modern corporate research theory. French law currently obliges companies to include information on environmental and social concerns in their annual activity reports. The objective of this thesis is to study the impact of the disclosure of CSR of CAC 40 listed companies on the Paris Stock Exchange (Euronext), on the corporate financial performance. In order to this, a statement on corporate social responsibility and social reporting is first presented using the content analysis method based on the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (GRI-G3.1). Then, financial performance is measured by accounting measures (ROA) and market measures (TBQ) obtained from the Datastream database. These quantitative data were used in a panel data regression model to test the impact of social reporting on the return on assets (ROA) and market value such as Tobin's Q (TBQ) over a period of 4 years, from 2011 to 2014.The results of the study show that the trend in corporate social responsibility increased throughout the period, particularly regarding the disclosure of employment practices and the environment, which are the two most widely disclosed elements. The results of the empirical analysis indicate that this mixed relationship between CSR disclosure and financial performance exists for all companies whether industrial or non-industrial. This work contributes to the literature on CSR by elucidating the temporal impact of the disclosure of environmental and social information on corporate value

Full textCorporate Social Performance (CSP) is part of an approach principles-process-results based on Stakeholder Theory. Its operationalization refers to difficulties particularly due to the concept of Sustainable Development: complex socio-technical issues, incompatible concerns (social, environmental and economic) ... To these difficulties, are added those of an stakeholder approach: identification, intra/inter-category conflicts, relationship dynamics, ... Accordingly, it is to coordinate the stakeholders to avoid conflicts. This engages the question of collective action on CSP operationalization. This "CIFRE-thesis" is particularly interested in the conditions for the emergence and sustainability of such action; these conditions emanating from the consultation of stakeholders and fundamentally the exceeding (compromise) of their conflicts. The tools offered by the theories of collective action is mobilized to overcome the difficulties in the CSP operationalization ; approaches in terms of "Economies de la Grandeur" to capture the conflicts and compromises; the theory of negotiated order to better identify the stakeholders moving between conflicts and coalitions, then enrolling in a dynamic. In the sector of real estate development, there is a deep crisis of confidence and - for collective action – rules are needed. Especially, the conflict based on value and its creation is deep; and the "écolo-marchand" compromise resulting is controversial. If collective action is therefore required "common", it cannot be an "action à plusieurs" and remains an "action ensemble"

Full textThe development and internationalization of retailers whose success is based on new sales techniques on a mass scale at low prices were accompanied by an awareness of the social and environmental impacts of these activities. Meanwhile, the emergence of the concept of corporate social responsibility encourages companies to contribute to sustainable development goals. Thus, corporate social responsibility (CSR) approaches are implemented by a growing number of companies, including retailers, to integrate these issues into their business model. But how to evaluate the relevance of the actions against retailers' CSR issues? How to assess their contribution to companies' CSR goals? How to assess the multiple potential positive and negative effects of actions that are initially proposed to reduce one specific environmental impact? How to account for the multitude of stakeholders and issues, sometimes difficult to quantify, subject to uncertainty and changing over time? Despite the numerous existing methods, they do not adequately enable the identification and the assessment of these issues.Conducted within the Environment Department of a multinational retailer, this work tries to overcome these limitations by providing a methodological approach for a prior assessment of social and environmental impacts of actions both qualitatively and quantitatively on the basis of issues listed in the ISO 26000 standard. To identify the limitations and benefits of this approach, it was tested on actions aimed at remplacing commercial refrigeration equipments

Full textThis thesis deals with an evaluation framework and support of sustainable development projects in companies. First, a literature review on concepts, standards and tools related to sustainable development and Corporate Social Responsibility has been conducted. In this sense, the insufficiency of taking into account of stakeholders’ points of view in such a process has been highlighted. Moreover, the integration of sustainable development and methodological tools in project management represents a strategic imperative. Therefore, the implementation of an integration strategy of sustainable development in project management is necessary. Firstly, we have proposed a characterization model for overall performance, integrating the economic, environmental and social performances in corporate management. Secondly, we have associated a generic approach with this model in order to propose a methodology and complete support for decision-making throughout the project. Such an approach is based on the project life cycle which helps decision makers in their strategic orientations. Finally, the methodology is supported by an « informatics tool » which makes its integration simplified and allows better decision-makings

Full textIn this thesis we have considered the transgressions made by heads of companies in Lebanon to the applicable labor rules (Labor Code, social security, etc.) and to the standards for good human resources management. These business owners have replaced these rules, among others, to suit their needs with the help of: sequential economic crises; a fragmented and weakened syndicalism; a paralyzed work inspection; a political power undermined by conflict; very high unemployment rates; abundance of low-cost foreign labor force; etc.Consequently, we have applied the Theory of Social Regulation (TRS) of Jean-Daniel Reynaud (1988, 1997, 2003), which have helped us in answering questions related to the redefinition of the rules of work and human resources management, other rulemakings, and the identification of the rulemaking actors, their strategies, and the nature of the rules issued. To answer the questions raised by our problem statement, we have conducted three field studies. The first in form of interviews with HR managers of companies in Lebanon. This study allowed us to identify the profiles of these actors, their career path, their involvement in rulemaking, and the issues faced at the level of HR. The second study was a sample survey filled by 450 employees at companies of the main economic sectors, from which a questionnaire was conducted on human resources management in these companies. As for the third, case studies were conducted in eight companies in form of 28 interviews with employees at these companies.Indeed, the data of all this fieldwork allowed us to detect forms of social regulation and to estimate the margin of applicability of Reynaud’s theory to the social regulation in Lebanon via HRM

Full textOver the past two decades, the two vulnerable groups of ethnic minorities and household businesses have participated in the economic growth but could not benefit from the growth process as much as the other groups in Vietnam. The inadequate inclusiveness of these two groups in the economic growth calls for an investigation of the ethnic gap and household businesses' performance with a lens of social networks. This study aims to examine the role of social networks, using a Q-squared method to analyze an original dataset, which combined both the quantitative and qualitative datasets on social networks of household businesses. In doing so, the study employs an innovative instrument of being the first son in the family. Chapter 1 measures and analyses the main drivers of the ethnic gap over the last ten years. Chapter 2 identifies the causal effects of social networks on household businesses' performance. Chapter 3 presents a qualitative analysis of the impact of social networks on business performance by the content and the strength of social relationships, and the business phase
