Full textIn today’s competitive environment, in which competition increases and the pace of technological change accelerates, the need for deploying product development investments more efficiently and effectively is stronger than ever. The ability to create streams of new successful products to the market is vital for every product delivering company’s survival. Performance measurements are important in order to evaluate the current state of operation of the product development and decide on actions to improve its’ performance. However, in contrast to the concept of productivity in the production process there are no commonly adopted methods for measuring performance within product development. The methodology used in this research is explorative multiple case studies at five companies developing complex products. Complex products in this research involve mechanics, electronics, and software. Moreover, complex products are often long living and most development work is evolutionary in character. An extensive interview study among senior managers and decision makers has been conducted to get a broad and systematic understanding of what performance is and what to measure. The main results developed from this research are two conceptual tools. The first one, the Performance Measurement Evaluation Matrix (PMEX) can be used to evaluate the performance measurement system used at a company. The PMEX makes it possible for managers to get a more holistic view and discuss what the performance measurement system is measuring, and what it is not measuring, in order to decide on what to measure. The second tool, the Product Development Organizational Performance Model (PDOPM) can be used to conceptually analyze performance in the product development process from a holistic system perspective. This is achieved by making efficiency, effectiveness, and uncertainty explicit and by showing how they relate at a strategic, project, and product implementation level. The PMEX and the PDOPM can be used by managers in order to increase the understanding of what performance is and to be able to decide on actions in order to improve the performance of the product development process.

Militaries have long been eager to adopt the latest technology (IT) in a quest to improve knowledge of and control over the battlefield. At the same time, uncertainty and confusion have remained prominent in actual experience of war. IT usage sometimes improves knowledge, but it sometimes contributes to tactical blunders and misplaced hubris. As militaries invest intensively in IT, they also tend to develop larger headquarters staffs, depend more heavily on planning and intelligence, and employ a larger percentage of personnel in knowledge work rather than physical combat. Both optimists and pessimists about the so-called "revolution in military affairs" have tended to overlook the ways in which IT is profoundly and ambiguously embedded in everyday organizational life. Technocrats embrace IT to "lift the fog of war," but IT often becomes a source of breakdowns, misperception, and politicization. To describe the conditions under which IT usage improves or degrades organizational performance, this dissertation develops the notion of information friction, an aggregate measure of the intensity of organizational struggle to coordinate IT with the operational environment. It articulates hypotheses about how the structure of the external battlefield, internal bureaucratic politics, and patterns of human-computer interaction can either exacerbate or relieve friction, which thus degrades or improves performance. Technological determinism alone cannot account for the increasing complexity and variable performances of information phenomena. Information friction theory is empirically grounded in a participant-observation study of U.S. special operations in Iraq from 2007 to 2008. To test the external validity of insights gained through fieldwork in Iraq, an historical study of the 1940 Battle of Britain examines IT usage in a totally different structural, organizational, and technological context.
(cont.) These paired cases show that high information friction, and thus degraded performance, can arise with sophisticated IT, while lower friction and impressive performance can occur with far less sophisticated networks. The social context, not just the quality of technology, makes all the difference. Many shorter examples from recent military history are included to illustrate concepts. This project should be of broad interest to students of organizational knowledge, IT, and military effectiveness.

This study investigated the effects of a performance improvement program on operational results in a business setting. The purpose of the study was to determine if the intervention influenced results the corporation used to measure its success. The intervention involved setting goals, which would its success. The intervention involved setgiving feedback and developing remediation overcome difficulties if goals were not achieved. Goal-setting and feedback were done at regularly scheduled intervals. Two work groups within the organization were studied: one which applied the program and one which did not. The effect of the intervention was evaluated using a 2 x 2 design. Two factors represented the pre-program versus post-program time periods; the other two factors represented the experimental conditions: treatment and control. The effect of the program was quantified in terms of five measures of organizational success. These measures were: attendance, safety, quality, maintenance efficiency and installation efficiency.

Full textThe confluence of the limited resources of fossil fuels (e.g. coal, oil and natural gas), environmental degradations leading to climate change, security of supplies and fossil fuels high costs have demanded a tremendous efforts on humanity to seek for a sustainable and unlimited natural energy sources. Amongst these renewable energy sources stands out solar energy because of its ubiquitousness. Solar energy is converted to DC electricity by the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic (PV) power systems installed in commercial and industrial buildings are a good example of distributed power generation. Here the energy consumption and production match and thus electricity taken from the grid during daytime peak hours can be reduced. This is beneficial as the transmission losses in the grid are avoided and also transmission need is reduced. The cost effectiveness of a solar energy system has hindered its wide adoption and deployment in terms of the initial capital cost even though it has a zero energy cost and very minimal operating and maintenance costs. Different governments have instituted many financial incentives for fast adoption of PV systems for both residential and commercial applications. However, all these incentives are not sustainable in the longer term forecast. For PV system to attain grid parity requires more than unsustainable approach of many governments providing time limited subsidies. The technical solution to the problem is to reduce the overall system cost through technical innovations. One such method is the adoption of transformerless inverter technology as the grid interface system. Transformerless inverter topology provides galvanic isolation through innovative inverter topology and switching strategies that eliminates problems created by not employing the service of transformer.

Full textPerformance measurement is a topic that has received considerable attention during the last decades. There are many motives for using performance measures in a company but perhaps the most crucial one is that they will help to improve productivity when used properly. Productivity is of vital importance to a company’s ability to compete and make profits over time. A company that is not able to efficiently utilise its resources in creating value for its customers will not survive in the competitive business environment of today.
However, the development of fully functional and suitable performance measurement systems (i.e. set of measures) has proven to be a very challenging task. This research has focused on the last phase of the development of performance measurement system, namely the continuous updating of the performance measures, which still have not been explored in a satisfactory manner. The objective is to investigate and clarify how to evaluate and revise performance measurement systems. In order to reach this objective, several obstacles that contribute to the complexity of the research area are treated.
In the beginning, the thesis thoroughly investigates the confusing terminology within the field and frequently used terms like productivity, profitability, performance, efficiency and effectiveness are explained. Then, a categorisation of ways to measure performance is presented along with advantages and shortcomings of different productivity and other performance measures. Several key-factors found to affect the productivity of a manufacturing company are also discussed, such as: design of processes and equipment, disturbances and losses, management and control, product design, and job design and work organisation. Much attention is given to the different requirements that performance measurement systems must fulfil, both on the system level and the measure level. Finally a method called the performance measurement progression map is finally proposed, which has been developed in order to give measurement practitioners a comprehensive guide of how to evaluate and revise performance measurement systems.
The thesis is concluded with the results from several empirical investigations in which the usefulness of the developed method is validated.

Research and Development (R&D) has been recognized as an important activity in the value chain. With an effective strategy, continuous monitoring, and performance measurement, companies can create and sustain competitive advantage. This thesis investigates the association between technology strategy and performance measurement, and explores the effect of the fit between them on performance. Performance measures of financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth dimensions are developed according to the balanced scorecard. The R&D managers and financial managers of 1,152 electronic companies in Taiwan are solicited to respond to the questionnaire. The results based on 118 useful responses from the R&D mangers, and 70 useful responses from both R&D and financial managers are as follows. First, prospectors place more emphasis on product development than defenders, while defenders emphasize more on process innovation. But, the difference is not statistically significant. Second, the companies in the sample emphasize the financial measures least among the four dimensions of performance measures. Third, Prospectors place more emphasis than defenders on all the four dimensions of performance measures. Finally, technology strategy and emphasis on customers and learning and growth performance measures interactively affect performance in that prospectors with more emphasis on customers and learning and growth measures perform better than those with less emphasis. Prospectors with more emphasis on financial measures perform poorer than those with less emphasis. No significant interactive effect of technology strategy and internal process emphasis on performance exists.

Universities are designated to disseminate innovative knowledge and technologies to enterprises and facilitate the economic growth. The activities of university technology transfer are composed of a multitude of mechanisms, such as patent applications and patent granted, patent licensing, technology licensing, contract research, collaboration research, technology-oriented start-up, and other forms of formal or informal information transfer. The university sector, receiving government funding to perform basic research, is designated to produce and widely disseminate innovative knowledge to industry in many countries. Knowledge occurred in university research can be traced with patent data. Take Taiwan’s universities as a research base, this study investigates the knowledge creation and citation of Taiwan’s universities by USPTO patent database. The patent analysis finds a dramatic increase in the number of university patent after 2002 and some observations of research areas and patent citation in research universities are derived. This study also intends to identify the critical drivers of the multitudinous outputs of university technology transfer in order to understand the important factors of performance of technology transfer. Fuzzy Delphi method, interpretive structural modeling (ISM), and analytic network process (ANP) are employed sequentially to derive the relative importance of the performance drivers. The human capital and the institutional/culture resources are two most emphasized resources towards the improvement of university technology transfer in Taiwan. Faculty quality and size of technology transfer offices are the most critical drivers within the dimension of human capital. Incentive policy and experience of technology transfer offices are the most critical drivers within the dimension of institutional /culture resources. Finally, some policy implications are derived based on this results.

One of the reasons for the success of the enterprise is to be able to anticipate the development and signs of things, and to grasp the development trend of today's business opportunities. Therefore, the use of computer equipment and information systems to enhance business performance has become an inevitable trend for modern enterprises to enhance their competitiveness. Information technology plays an important role by building a set of information that can help companies analyze costs, master progress, risk, and customer satisfaction, as it provides faster access to real-time information for business decision making and forecasting. This reseach uses the “trust” and “altruistic” spirit of the social exchange theory to explore whether the Effectiveness Efficiency Quality System (EEQ) expected to improve the performance of the organization's members and organizations as they expected to introduce into the organization to explore the use of electronic systematization performance management system for practical use. We based on the information success model (DeLone & McLean Information Success Model). After discussing with the experts, we summarized the following constructs: system quality, information quality, intention to use, user satisfaction, the individual effect and the effect to organization as a research model and used to analyze the association of EEQ system to enhance organizational performance. This research based on the Delphi method, the research object is for the employees and operators of the industry, after trial system conducted a questionnaire survey. The analysis of the data shows that these two constructs: Intention to Use, User Satisfaction have moderately significant on the Individual Effect, and the Individual Effect has significant positive to Effect to Organization, which proves that the EEQ system can enhance individual and organizational performance.
