Abstract:
This chapter looks at theatrical productions created in the wake of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995, which sought to convey the shock that permeated Israeli society as a result, and to provide theatrical responses to help the grieving community come to terms with his death. The chapter analyses the theatrical oeuvre of four post dramatic theatre creators—Ruth Kanner, Ilan Ronen, Rina Yerushalmi, and Hanan Snir—who saw Greek classical tragedy as a vast artistic arena where the political, the humanistic, and the artistic-performative merge, encompassing present and past

This chapter provides ethnographic information about the Play in Santo Domingo de Ónzole and La Tola at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In December 2002, the author traveled to the province of Esmeraldas, where he spent four weeks doing some fieldwork. His objective was to find out how the Play was being performed since he last visited. Once back home in Miami, he revised his diary in order to develop his initial analyses. He also inserted transcriptions of fragments of interviews conducted while in the field. The chapter maintains the diary format in the hopes that this approach wo

Abstract:
Deaf people are often portrayed as living in a world of silence, cut off both from experiencing musical works and from musical expression. There are, however, many different forms of musical expression in Deaf culture, including “song signing.” This essay explores the idea that deafness, rather than being a disadvantage for musical expression, actually enables distinctive musical performances within the context of song signing. The first section surveys the different varieties of signed song performance, the second contains analyses of videos, and the third compares the Deaf and hearing song-s

The history of Shakespeare in Latin America spans roughly the same two hundred years as the region’s independent life. Throughout, his works have been the object of performance, translation, and adaptation more than of academic study and discussion. This essay offers a comprehensive framework for application to future work on the subject of Shakespeare performance in Latin America. The chief theoretical tools undepinning the essay are Haroldo de Campos and Silviano Santiago’s elaborations on ‘transcreation’, ‘cultural anthropophagy’, and ‘in-betweenness’. Abstract:
Performing the Ramayana Tradition: Enactments, Interpretations, and Arguments, edited by Ramayana scholar Paula Richman and Rustom Bharucha, scholar of Theater and Performance Studies, examines diverse retellings of the Ramayana narrative as interpreted and embodied through a spectrum of performances. Unlike previous publications, this book is neither a monograph on a single performance tradition nor a general overview of Indian theater. Instead, it provides context-specific analyses of selected case studies that explore contemporary enactments of performance traditions and the narratives from

This chapter starts from the view that legal performance matters to law: its outcomes, doctrines, and history. Here, rather than defending that view (a task undertaken elsewhere), it analyzes the methodological issues that arise from it. Distinguishing performances—expressive, embodied legal events, and practices—from both literary and legal texts (the traditional objects of law and literature), it assesses the vexed words “performance” and “performativity” as analytic tools, set against the rich historical lexicon. It then distinguishes “law in performance” and “law of performance” from “law

Abstract:
This chapter presents detailed analyses of similes in five modern oral poetries. Examining the poet’s reliance on shared similes in the performances of two epic poems, The Epic of Pābūjī (Rajasthan, India) and The Guritan of Radin Suane (South Sumatra), prepares us to pay attention to shared similes when we see them alongside idiolectal similes. Next comes a demonstration of how Kyrgyz and Bosniac epic poets and composers of Najdi lyric poetry use similes to move around on the spectrum of distribution: they present shared and idiolectal similes. The chapter ends by considering the construction

Abstract:
This commentary analyses Article 7.3.7 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning restitution with respect to contracts to be performed over a period of time. When a contract to be performed over a period of time is terminated, Art 7.3.7 stipulates that restitution can only be claimed for the period after termination has taken effect, provided the contract is divisible. The purpose of this provision is to exclude retroactive restitution after termination of a divisible contract which was to be performed over a period of time, based on the idea that ‘it m
