Abstract:
Targeted services are recommended to pregnant women/parents in vulnerable positions to support their well-being and improve health outcomes; however, being offered extra services is associated with feelings of fear and anxiety. Adopting an ethnographic approach, we explore what parents fear, how and why they experience fear, and how this shapes their childbearing experience and engagement with Danish maternity care services. We made field observations and conducted interviews with 39 parents in vulnerable positions, who shared multiple, ambiguous, and interrelated fears. Four main themes were constructed: fear of going back to a dark place, of having a negative impact on the baby, of being labeled, and of the consequences of service engagement and being open. We conclude that what parents fear, the intensity of these fears, and what potentially triggers it are contingent on their life story, their care pathways, and the maternity care system.

Abstract:
Abstract The present study investigated the influence of contextual fear in comparison to relaxation on heart period variability (HPV), and analyzed differences in HPV between low and high anxious, nonclinical subjects. Fifty-three women participated in the study. Each subject underwent four experimental conditions (control, fear, relaxation, and a combined fear-relaxation condition), lasting 10 min each. Fear was provoked by an unpredictable aversive human scream. Relaxation should be induced with the aid of verbal instructions. To control for respiratory effects on HPV, breathing was paced at 0.2 Hz using an indirect light source. Besides physiological measures (HPV measures, ECG, respiration, forearm EMG, blood pressure), emotional states (pleasure, arousal, dominance, state anxiety) were assessed by subjects' self-reports. Since relaxation instructions did not have any effect neither on the subjective nor on the physiological variables, the present paper focuses on the comparison of the control and the fear condition. The scream reliably induced changes in both physiological and self-report measures. During the fear condition, subjects reported more arousal and state anxiety as well as less pleasure and dominance. Heart period decreased, while EMG and diastolic blood pressure showed a tendency to increase. HPV remained largely unaltered with the exception of the LF component, which slightly decreased under fear induction. Replicating previous findings, trait anxiety was negatively associated with HPV, but there were no treatment-specific differences between subjects with low and high trait anxiety.

Abstract:
The article highlights a little-studied problem of role of fears in the everyday life of Orthodox believers in the Ukrainian lands of the second half of the 16th – 17th centuries. It is noted that in the early modern period, the society suffered from an outbreak of violence, and this influenced the formation of the atmosphere of fear among the population. The types of fears from which the society suffered the most are analyzed on an example of most typical cases: fear of war and violence, illness, mutilation, premature death, fear of armed people, foreign invaders and representatives of other denominations. In addition to these objective fears, Orthodox society felt irrational ones, the greatest of which was to sin. To a large extent, everyday life of the Orthodox was characterized by fear of the Last Judgment and Hell, Evil Spirits. Fears inherent in a modern man, manifested in everyday life of an orthodox man of the 16th - 17th centuries much stronger due to much more dangerous living conditions. Fear was a characteristic feature of everyday life in the early modern Orthodox society.

Abstract:
The problem of the place and significance of the phenomena of fear and horror in the world-view of man has a long but unexplored history in science. Since ancient philosophy, these phenomena (especially fear) have been regarded as feelings that depend on the object-subjective perception of the phenomena of the socio-cultural life of society. However, none of the ancient authors put forward the original scientific hypothesis of the phenomenon and its justification. In modern times, fear in scientific circulation and everyday outlook has become purely natural-physiological (mechanical-materialistic) reaction of the nervous system of man to external danger. From the period of separation of psychology into a separate science and under the influence of the achievements of experimental psychophysiology of the early twentieth century. such a dominant awareness of fear has finally established itself and dominates the contemporary Western European outlook.

Abstract:
The article discusses the fear of pregnancy and childbirth as a multidimensional subjective phenomenon. It is noted that the fear of pregnancy and childbirth is a phenomenon associated not only with the period of expectation of a child and (or) preparation for childbirth, but also with existential experience that arises in the subject outside of partnership and the context of procreation, which is recorded from fertile age. However, pregnancy contributes to the understanding and concretisation of this fear in both partners. The sources of fear of pregnancy and childbirth are extensive. At the same time, in Russian literature, the interpretational aspects of fear are revealed mainly in the female sample. An empirical study was carried out to in-depth study of the fear of pregnancy and childbirth as a female and male problem and its dependence on parenting experience or prospects (n=141). The results demonstrate that fear of pregnancy and childbirth is present in both women and men and does not depend on the life context. The content of the main female and male fears is identical, but the female fear of pregnancy and childbirth is more pronounced and structured. The unified fears for women and men are revealed. However, this fear is more pronounced in subjects without experience of pregnancy and parenting.

Abstract:
Surgical intervention usually leads to fear. The operation has always been emphasized emotional entry into the sphere of the unknown and there is no man with normal psychological defenses that do not feel any discomfort when visiting any operation. The aim of this study is to examine the existence of psychological reactions of patients who were admitted to the surgical treatment, the possibility of exploring measures to overcome possible preoperative and postoperative fear, development of a plan to introduce changes and strategies to overcome the preoperative and postoperative fear and monitoring its implementation. The research was conducted in the surgical unit for anesthesia and resuscitation at University Hospital in Foča during the period from 01.05.2013. until 31.05.2013. year. The study used a descriptive short questionnaire with information on the subject and self-assessment questionnaire for depression. The majority of patients a few days before the operation had diminished interest in the events around them, a feeling of emptiness, indisposition, sleep problems, fatigue. The majority of patients had decreased appetite, weakness of concentration, slow, suicidal ideas. From all examined patients 15% of them showed no physical symptoms, while 85% were showed greater number of physical symptoms in the field of all organ systems. Twenty percent of all examined patients has no signs of depression, a mild form of depression was found in 55% of patients, while the moderately mild form of depression was found in 25% of patients.A well-designed and conducted psychological preoperative preparation is not only an important factor for positive operational outcomes and successful post-operative recovery of patients, but also more durable pledge its rational relationship to health and disease.

Abstract:
The study is relevant due to the fact that the life of a modern person is permeated with fears, both real and virtual. A person cannot imagine his life without fear; even his own existence causes fear. Despite the fact that fear has always accompanied a man, at present, due to the increase in self-awareness and many other factors, in our opinion, fear is becoming the true basis of human existence in the world. The purpose of this study is to analyze the problem of fear as the basis of human existence in various historical periods and, in particular, at the present stage of human development. The achievement of the stated goal was facilitated by the solution of the following tasks. 1. To analyze the evolution of philosophical ideas about fear in various historical periods. 2. Based on the analysis, to draw conclusions and show that the rethink of fear is carried out in the New Age, since this period is a turning point in changing the role of fear. It is at this time that its individualization occurs, and it acquires a pronounced social character. 3. Particular attention should be paid to the analysis of existential philosophy, in which fear is considered as one of the key foundations of human existence and the main companion of a man in the modern era. Human existence and fear become one whole, connected by an inextricable thread. The methodology of this study is based on a dialectical approach. This approach was implemented through the use of a set of research methods of induction, deduction, analysis, comparison and synthesis, which are of a general scientific character. Analyzing the problem of fear in modern reality, we came to the conclusion that the XXI century is an era when fear begins to accompany an individual in his daily existence, becomes a mass phenomenon and is formed in the public consciousness through various information channels: the media, the Internet, expert opinion, etc. The modern world has also generated completely new types of fears, which are a direct consequence of technologization, informatization, and digitalization of society. The appearance of the “pandemic of fear” amid the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced our idea that in the XXI century fear has become the true basis of human existence.

Abstract:
The paper presents the analysis of the results of international and national research in the field of studying the impact of global crises and pandemic situations (including COVID-19) on the state of mental health of people. Traditionally, the fear that accompanies emergency events and situations is considered as a source of mental and psychological traumatology of various kinds, however, the authors consider fear in a period of global risks and changes, from the point of view of not the cause, but an indicator of a decrease in the integrity of a person's mental health. The initial theoretical model that allows us to differentiate and diagnose different qualities of fear was the "I-structural" concept of G. Amon, which allows us to describe and understand the specific phenomenology of fears in the pandemic period. The qualities of fear, manifested in its constructive, destructive and deficient form, according to the authors, reflect the resource reserve of a person's mental health and the level of his psychological stability.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis constitutes an eminently ceramological investigation, within the historic background of the henomenon of the Greek «protocolonization» in Southern Italy, more particularly in the Ionian coast district. This survey takes into consideration the ceramic previously treated and said as «plain ware», class of material which outlines and definition are uncertain and particularly fluctuating. Indeed, contrary to the indigenous fine ware production or to the local greek production, among whom the forms and the ornamental motives are clearly recognizable, the common ceramic, whether it is of greek or indigenous production, appears as a class relatively little studied and functionally heterogeneous. Here we aim to study and to deepen the theoretical, abstract and anthropological perspectives, around this ceramic traditionally characterized by technical and esthetic criteria: namely a poor quality average, relatively simple forms and achromy, and a polyfonctionality to be defined; on the other hand we’ll try to propose a typo-chronological and contextualized catalog of the achromic ceramic material from Incoronata, excluding de facto the impasto class and the major containers.Obviously, it will be advisable to multiply the confrontations by being interested on one hand, to all the types of contexts, Greek, native or mixed, between the Metapontino and the Siritide, but also by widening the geographical frame to the Southern Italy and even beyond

Abstract:
From its source to the Mediterranean Sea, the Vidourle valley, 95 km long, meets the various landscapes of the low-Languedoc géo-system. Through its journey, the river runs across the Cévennes (a small chain of mountains), the karstik hills, the garrigue and the camargue. This very rich natural environment is a perfect field for spatio-temporal analysis of settlements from the Iron Age to the High Middle Ages. Occupied since millenaries, this valley is of great archaeological wealth and allow us to question the behavior of man towards a river, through his travels and his way to develop the land, but also provides some answers on the roles of streams in this development. Based on many already advanced archaeological works (excavations, surveys, geomorphological analysis), this study was completed by new fieldworks in the upper valley of the river, expanding our knowledge of the settlement and helping us to provide a database of 832 archeological sites on which this analysis is based. Combining archeology, history and geography, along with the use of well known methods of studies (G.I.S, statistics, etc.), this research highlights the desire to offer a review of the issue of dynamics in valley of Vidourle. The broad chronological framework strengthens this desire and gives a more complete picture of the history of human occupation

Abstract:
The presented study analyses on the example of Bohemia the question in what extent the creation of oppida (and more broadly the cultural transformation of the Transalpine world in the recent La Tène period) were influenced by Mediterranean impulses and to what extent they may be on the other hand considered as a local phenomenon. The historical and chronological background are studied in detail, the question itself is approached by an analysis of the corpus of Mediterranean imports in central Europe intended to evaluate the role of Bohemia (within the central European context) in the contacts with the Mediterranean. In the concluding chapter the oppida and their settlement systems are confronted with the Mediterranean towns. The contacts with the Mediterranean turn out to have been constant and significant for the Transalpine word, the oppida, however, seem to be a largely local phenomenon

Abstract:
The present investigation deals with Italic peoples and the early days of the Etruscan world. It focuses more particularly on a period from the Early Iron Age to the end of the orientalizing period (800-580 B.C.). This crucial time shows the transition from Villanovian culture to Etruscan culture. The traditional chronological cuts have hindered the diachronical analysis of the archaeological documentation and, therefore, the ongoing social mutation of the Etruscan society. ln this research, I have used three major and well known funerary contexts (of Veio, Pontecagnano and Verucchio), totalizing 771 tombs and more than 10 000 artefacts, in order to reshape a precise chrono-cultural sequence which embraces those two periods, traditionally studied as separated chronological phases. My chronological analysis was a necessary precursor to the study of more complex cultural dynamics that occurred at this time in the Mediterranean Basin: the Orientalizing Phenomenon in which (proto)-Etruscan elites played an active role in using, as new identification criteria in their tombs, goods and raw materials coming from the Orient. The blank creation of the archaeological documentation and the new periodization created in this thesis work now allows us to follow, through a continuous and a longer sequence the adoption, by the Etruscan communities, of various oriental elements

Ritz, Simon. "Senon-Amel (Meuse) : contribution d’une agglomération bipolaire à l’histoire du fait urbain dans le nord-est de la Gaule, du second âge du Fer au haut Moyen Âge." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LORR0164.

Abstract:
Interdisciplinary investigations combining prospection techniques (field survey, aerial photography, geophysics, Li¬DAR) and excavations (preventive and university-led excavations) have been carried out for almost 15 years on the ar¬chaeological site of Senon-Amel. They have revealed the bipolarity of this roman town, which is split into two urban cen¬tres located 1.5 km apart, simultaneously inhabited during most of the Antiquity, from the middle of the 1st century A.D. to the middle of the 4th century at least. This urban layout is very unusual among the roman towns of northern Gaul and thus needs to be explained. Its most striking feature is the duplication of public monuments: both urban centres include temples, public baths and a theatre. This thesis discusses the origin and evolution of the bipolar frame. It highlights the role of the integration of Gallic civitates into the roman provincial administration, and the impact of a religious economy in the shap¬ing of the city. These processes obviously have an interest per se – they contribute to illustrate the varied origins of urban features in norther Gaul –, but they also have broader implications. Indeed, the closeness of the two urban centres allows us to study quite precisely their specific features and their origins, thanks to the consistency of the documentation. This comparison reveals two very different urban trajectories: broadly speaking, evidence suggests that Senon was preceded by an Iron Age settlement, which stayed occupied during the roman period and expanded thanks to the existence of a wide range of crafts and trade activities. On the other hand, Amel seems to have been created at the beginning of the Empire as a sanctuary, which only later aggregated dwelling houses and other private facilities. The juxtaposition of these two urban entities is very unusual, but the mechanisms that drove their setting-up and further evolution are certainly common to many other roman towns. As a result, the case study of Senon-Amel evidences processes that are of more general significance

Abstract:
The thesis deals with exchanges between Western Mediterranean islands and Greek, Etruscan and Phoenician cities during the first Millenium BC. Corsica's island stands for the main target of the survey. There's no doubt that "exchanges" between human communities can cause deep changes on lifestyles and identities. Therethore, they are considered in relation with four aspects : culture, social identity, economics and political power. The survey permit to conclude to an intensive dialogue between Northern Corsica and Etruria. Certainly motivated by metal's trade, those relationships begin about the IXth century BC and concern in first Populonia's district, then Southern Etruria's poleis as Vulci and Caere. Southern Corsica doesn't really seem to participate to this trade, unless we stand there in presence of a different archaeological translation of the contacts. As a consequence of those relationships, some changes are visible in Northern Corsican material culture, social expression and settlements. It became also possible to perceive the native population in Aleria. Moreover, the thesis offers the opportunity to present Cozza Torta's excavation (in Porto-Vecchio), which is the only example of indigenous foundation with imported pottery from Massalia, Etruria and Athenes (VIth c. BC). At last, imported goods permitted a chronological discussion. To go further, it would be necessary to carry out more archaeological surveys in Northern Corsica, especially on protohistoric settlements. The Corsican material culture must be revisited too. In order to know better the Islander metals (copper and iron), we should find a way to practice analysis on some artefacts

Abstract:
Drawing on hundreds of newly released judicial archives and court cases, this book analyzes the communist judicial system in China from its founding period to the death of Mao Zedong. It argues that the communist judicial system was built when the CCP was engaged in a life-or-death struggle with the GMD, meaning that the overriding aim of the judicial system was, from the outset, to safeguard the Party against both internal and external adversaries. This fundamental insecurity and perennial fear of loss of power obsessed the Party throughout the era of Mao and beyond, prompting it to launch numerous political campaigns, which forced communist judicial cadres to choose between upholding basic legal norms and maintaining Party order. In doing all of this, The Communist Judicial System in China, 1927-1976: Building on Fear fills a major lacuna in our understanding of communist-era China.

This book presents an unforgettable up-close account of the effects of World War II and the subsequent American occupation on Oita prefecture, through firsthand accounts from more than forty Japanese men and women who lived there. The interviewees include students, housewives, nurses, midwives, teachers, journalists, soldiers, sailors, Kamikaze pilots, and munitions factory workers. Their stories range from early, spirited support for the war through the devastating losses of friends and family members to air raids and into periods of hunger and fear of the American occupiers. The personal accounts are buttressed by archival materials; the result is an unprecedented picture of the war as experienced in a single region of Japan.

Abstract:
Bruges, middle of the 15th century. Anselm Adornes, scion of a rich patrician family, creates a magnificent domain in the heart of the city : an elegant mansion, beautiful gardens, several charitable almshouses and the spectacular Chapel of Jerusalem. It is a place that every right-minded resident of Bruges and every tourist must see. The history of the Adornes domain is truly remarkable, remaining in the unbroken possession of the same family for six centuries. It has survived storms and setbacks, the secularism of the French Revolution, the fury of two world wars and inevitable periods of disinterest. 'In this book Véronique Lambert allows us to share in the hopes and fears, joys and sorrows, trials and tribulations that mark the milestones in the Adornes family saga. Within the boundaries of historical interpretation and based on extensive research, she unfolds a fascinating tale of ambitious adventurers, charismatic personalities, flamboyant lords and ordinary mortals, but each imbued with the family's traditional willpower and energy'. Let yourself be enchanted by this fascinating piece of our cultural heritage, which deserves to be more widely known.

Abstract:
This is an intellectual and cultural history of India during the period of British occupation. It demonstrates that this was a period of renaissance in India in which philosophy—both in the public sphere and in the Indian universities—played a central role in the emergence of a distinctively Indian modernity. This is also a history of Indian philosophy. It demonstrates how the development of a secular philosophical voice facilitated the construction of modern Indian society and the consolidation of the nationalist movement. We explore the complex role of the English language in philosophical and nationalist discourse, demonstrating both the anxieties that surrounded English, and the processes that normalized it as an Indian vernacular and academic language. We attend both to Hindu and Muslim philosophers, to public and academic intellectuals, to artists and art critics, and to national identity and nation-builidng. We also explore the complex interactions between Indian and European thought during this period, including the role of missionary teachers and study at foreign universities in the evolution of Indian philosophy. We show that this pattern of interaction, although often disparaged as “inauthentic” is continuous with the cosmopolitanism that has always characterized the intellectual life of India, and that the philosophy articulated during this period is a worthy continuation of the Indian philosophical tradition.

Abstract:
Secret History tells the story of two sisters, Mary and Clara, who have joined Clara’s husband as he attempts to regain his lost colonial possessions in the final period of the Haitian Revolution. In contrast to the frights she experiences in war-ridden Saint-Domingue, Mary dreams longingly of a stable home. This chapter analyzes the novel’s dichotomy of horrifying fear and happy dreams on the level of figurative language, composition, and literary geography. It argues that Secret History engages with the specific challenge of forging a North-American cultural identity. The chapter also explores Sansay’s use of the sentimental mode, showing that it is used to interrogate the humanity of friends and foes, enslaved and free.

Abstract:
A new wave of empirical and data-driven studies on the history of social mobility in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period has been emerging in recent years. This trend bears some resemblance to the wave of historical inequality studies that successfully changed the consensus of long-run trends in inequality in the past decade. In this short reflection, I argue that there are important obstacles to overcome before a similar consensus in the field of historical mobility studies can be reached. Pre-modern historians should be careful to distinguish between different types of mobility, should take contemporary perceptions of social ambition or fear into account, and should Always specify which social groups their results apply to.

Abstract:
This article considers the relationship between compensation and intimacy, focusing on the relationship between the colonist Pierre Dessalles, who owned a plantation in the French colony of Martinique in the mid-nineteenth century, i.e. the period of the abolition of slavery, and Nicaise, one of his slaves. It shows slavery to be a relation of property and domination that did not, however, foreclose the possibility of emotional ties ranging from fear, anger and disgust to love. Readings of the diary of this planter — an exceptional document for its time — show how intimacy and “emotion” in all senses of the word — feelings but also, in French, something closer to “stirring” or “revolt” — both shape and are shaped by the political situation in which they develop.

AbstractThe clinical aspects of COVID-19 are discussed. A picture of what happens in a hospital—the ward and the intensive care unit (ICU)—is described. The impact of the disease on patients, medical professionals, and other staff, and case studies of patients who recovered as well as those who did not, are presented. The lived experience, over the ten-months period of the pandemic, of these individuals is portrayed. The lived experience of the author and that of her team is portrayed from the inception of the pandemic to date. The author traces changes made to diagnose and treat COVID-19 patients over time. Patient treatment and management regimens were refined and streamlined during this period. And the health system was re-designed to cope with the influx of huge numbers of COVID-19 patients. During this time, diagnostic tools and treatment regimens evolved. Doctors and their teams of nurses and technicians worked tirelessly day and night to cope with the onslaught. The public, however, stigmatized healthcare workers as they were overcoming with the fear of getting infected.Ten months ago, the medical profession knew very little about the virus or the disease as both were new. But with its dedication and commitment, the medical fraternity managed to cope with the rising number of patients with whatever tools it had. This period witnessed a rapid learning curve.

Abstract:
The chapter begins with perhaps the most famous quotation to emerge from the Great Depression: Franklin Roosevelt’s assertion that the only thing Americans had to fear was fear itself, which sounds good in theory but may not have reflected reality. To test that reading, the chapter examines various sources of fear in the Great Depression: a serial murderer in Cleveland; the polio epidemic that broke out in New York City in the summer of 1931; and the nearly constant fear of unemployment that characterized life during the Great Depression and made its way into the fiction of the period, including Helen Hunt’s Hardy Perennial. The chapter argues that what these sources have in common is a concern for the purity and autonomy of being, the nature or essence of a person, and the dread that such being might be violated and despoiled by impersonal but malevolent forces.

Abstract Periodic inspections have identified numerous visible cracks on the inner surfaces of steam stop valve and control valve casings at four coal-fired electricity generation units, each with approximately 50 years of operation. Evaluations were performed in recent years to assess the remaining life of those components. The assessments incorporated visual examinations, phased-array ultrasonic test (PAUT) examinations, dimensional measurements for creep analyses, and stress and crack growth analyses using finite-element analysis (FEA). It was determined that the sizes and growth rates of the observed cracks in all of the inspected units were such that there is substantial margin available before the valve casings would be expected to reach life-limiting levels of creep, cracking, or fatigue.

Abstract:
Given the worldwide pandemic period, fear of COVID-19 and negative emotions represented a relatively new research interest in the anxiety disorders literature. Specifically, individuals who experience a high level of negative emotional states (disgust, fear, negative affect) and perceive them as being harmful, have an increased risk of developing anxiety symptoms. In the past year, studies were conducted also within the educational system, their purpose being to find out the student perspective on online education, daily life and socioeconomic effects, risky behaviours, mental health conditions, coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the objective of the present study was to identify possible associations between emotional states and fear of COVID-19, amongst students. Moreover, to test whether the relationship between disgust and anxiety symptoms is explained by fear of COVID-19, a mediation analysis was conducted. In the present research, 119 students filled in four scales for the following constructs: anxiety, disgust, fear of COVID-19, and positive and negative affect. Results showed significant relationships between emotional states and fear of COVID-19. Additionally, the mediation analysis emphasized that fear of COVID-19 explains the relationship between disgust and anxiety symptoms. These preliminary findings suggest that disgust may influence the occurrence and maintenance of a high level of anxiety amongst students. Given the pandemic period, these results could be a preliminary step for clinical practice to improve the anxiety symptoms assessment by targeting disgust and fear of COVID-19 as important emotions. Also, this study discussed other clinical and theoretical implications, limitations, and future research directions.

Abstract:
Background: Major measles epidemics had occurred every two to three years causing an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year before the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1963 and widespread vaccination. The introduction of immunization against certain infectious diseases in Serbia had led to an increase in the collective immunity of the population, resulting in a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases among the population in our country. According to data from the Report on the movement of infectious diseases in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes for year 1925, published in the Gazette of the Central Institute of Hygiene in 1926, the total number of people infected with measles was 15,568, and the total number of deaths was 263. The introduction of immunization against certain infectious diseases in Serbia had led to an increase in the collective immunity of the population, resulting in a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases among the population in our country. Today, with the rapid development of new technologies, results in faster development of new vaccines available to population. This in turn leads to the development of new health-related fears. Health-related fears may significantly affect not only individual health but also public health since they are closely related to health behaviours. Understanding that social responses are cultural and historical products may help to create a more appropriate support for the concept of vaccination among populations. Methods and Objectives: In order to analyze the impact of improvement of interpersonal communication skills of healthcare workers on parents' decision to vaccinate their child, an online survey was conducted. Proportions of primary health care workers first in contact with parents (pediatricians, paediatric, patronage nurses and nurses from pre-school institutions working on prevention) who were trained were used. Results: The training of primary health care workers first in contact with parents focused on interpersonal communication skills was conducted by the Institute of Public health of Serbia Dr Milan Jovanović Batut with the support of UNICEF. Based on the available data on MMR vaccination coverage, six trainings were held with the focus on the districts with the lowest MMR1 coverage in 2021 and 2022. Training course entitled "Interpersonal communication on immunisation" were attended by 216 healthcare workers from nine selected districts between August 2023 to January 2024. In addition, 62% health workers (31% pediatricians, 20.7% paediatric nurses and 23.7% patronage nurses from Health Centers and 24.6% nurses from pre-school institutions) completed the survey during 3 months follow-up period, that is, once a month each month after the completed training. Each month they arranged for an interview with 7 parents undecided to vaccinate their child. Majority of the survey participants confirmed that they used acquired training communication skills in practice (98.3%) with listening and speaking (56.7%) and principles of direct communication skills (30%) were found to be the most efficient ones. Conclusions: Effective communication undoubtedly plays a key role in trust building. Enhanced interpersonal skills among healthcare workers improve their ability to handle diverse patient interactions. We must understand the reasons behind their choices, as well as understand the needs of the parents. This focuses on the potential of communication training to better engage health workers with vaccination programs.

Abstract:
Adolescence is a period in which human organism develop rapidly physically and mentally. It is also the age of great searches and dreams, of affirmation and changes. Every adolescent achieves his own identity, learns to make decision and find his professional vocation. This period of development is focused on the search for one’s own values, can be a continuous source of stress, dissatisfaction, many doubts, disappointments and dissolutions. Stress is common phenomenon for different periods of development, but during adolescence because of multiple and different changes in adolescents’ life, stress is experienced and felt more intensely than in order periods of human development. Changes in social, economic and educational spheres conditionate a state of stress at modern adolescents demanding all their resources. Sources of stress for adolescents can be body changes, overloading at school, fear of evaluation, involvement in many activities, high expectations, demands and frustration in different school circumstances, negative thoughts and emotions about themselves, unsafe environment, family problems and difficulties. A high level of stress can generate physical disease, anxiety, different maladaptive behaviours such as: aggression, alcohol or drug consumption, isolation, etc.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Salvador was deeply affected by Sars-CoV-2. Because of the fear of contamination, many stopped seeking medical attention for the prevention and treatment of serious illnesses, such as stroke. This is defined as the appearance of a sudden neurological deficit caused by an alteration in the blood vessels of the CNS, being classified as ischemic and hemorrhagic. Objectives: To describe a relationship between the number of strokes hospitalizations from January / 2019 to March / 2020, which preceded the new Coronavirus pandemic, and the period of social isolation, from March / 2020 to October / 2020. Methods: The study was done with aggregated data, being longitudinal observational (time series) based on data collected in the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH / SUS) available at DATASUS. Results: A peak of hospitalizations for stroke is observed in April / 2019, with 350 cases. During the same year, hospitalizations fluctuated between 200 and 300 cases. At the beginning of 2020, this number remained on schedule, with an average of 250 hospitalizations. As of April, however, there is a fall, with May / 2020 reaching the lowest number of hospitalizations recorded in the entire period studied. This deviation is also observed in the remaining months of 2020. Conclusion: The pandemic may have a direct relationship with the number of hospitalizations in Salvador. Due to fear of contamination, there was a significant drop in the number of consultations, increasing the likelihood of deaths from stroke.

Barradas, Ricardo. Why are (financialised) workers becoming more resigned and conformist and less claimants? Empirical evidence for Portugal. DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.15847/dinamiacet-iul.wp.2023.03.

Full text
Abstract:
The deregulation and flexibilisation of labour relations has been on the active neoliberal agenda of policymakers all over the world, including in Portugal. Against this backdrop, labour conditions have been worsening since the 1970s and 1980s, and workers have progressively lost some labour rights, which is noticeable in stagnant (or falling) wages, the rise of personal income inequalities, the proliferation of atypical work, the increase of precariousness, the surge of emotional abuses in the workplace, the deterioration of work–life balance and the spread of informal work. Nonetheless, workers have evidenced higher resignation and conformism and lesser claimant behaviour in order to demand higher wages and better labour conditions, which is visible in the strong reduction in strike activity in the last four decades. Our argument asserts that workers’ financialisation and indebtedness levels restrain their demands for higher wages and better labour conditions due to the fear of decreasing their income and losing their jobs and the consequent risks of default. This paper aims to assess the relationship between workers’ financialisation and indebtedness levels and their strike activity by performing a time-series econometric analysis focused on Portugal during the period of 1979 to 2021. We conclude that workers’ financialisation and indebtedness levels have a negative effect on strike activity in Portugal, both in the short term and in the long term, especially on strike volume and strike duration. We also conclude that workers’ financialisation and indebtedness levels have been one of the main drivers behind the decline of strike activity in Portugal in the last four decades.

Abstract:
Prabowo Subianto’s victory in Indonesia’s February 2024 presidential election marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s democratic evolution, echoing a global shift towards nationalist populism. As Indonesia’s eighth president, Prabowo’s political journey and ideological stance have sparked concerns about the future of the country’s democratic institutions. His controversial military past, including allegations of human rights abuses in East Timor and Aceh during the 1990s, continues to raise alarms about the potential for authoritarianism under his leadership. Critics fear his presidency may signal a return to repressive practices, with threats to civil liberties and increased polarization. Prabowo’s background as a former military general adds to concerns about a consolidation of power and the erosion of democratic checks and balances in one of the world’s largest democracies.

Abstract:
Stalking and harassment both involve any repeated behaviour that would cause alarm, distress or fear of violence in a victim. Common stalking or harassment behaviours include unwanted contact online or in person, following a victim, and interfering with property. Stalking is characterised by a perpetrator’s fixation or obsession and can have long-term psychological and social effects on a victim. Stalking also has the potential to escalate to other crimes, such as sexual assault or murder. This POSTnote describes stalking and harassment before presenting evidence on the effectiveness of approaches to identifying, preventing and prosecuting these crimes.

Pritchard, Alex, Peter Martin, Mark McCourt, and Mark Kearns. Design Optimization of Rotationally Molded Hydrogen Pressure Vessels. Universidad de los Andes, 2024. https://doi.org/10.51573/andes.pps39.gs.ms.3.

Full text
Abstract:
Type IV hydrogen pressure vessels are made up of three components: a metallic boss, a polymer liner, and a composite overwrapping layer for reinforcement. Leakproof design of bosses is critical for safety, ensuring a gas-tight seal to prevent explosions due to leaks. Yet, their design has been largely overlooked. Using rotational molding it is possible to fully encap sulate bosses within liners during molding, but numerous challenges must be overcome relat ing to boss design for effective molding. FEA software was applied to virtually prototype boss designs and optimize their mechanical performance under pressure. CAD and FEA software were integrated in this work, enabling basic geometry constraints to be input in CAD, which were then fine-tuned in FEA in response to stress distribution results. This allowed the FEA model to optimize boss designs autonomously. To ensure moldability, initial boss designs were generated using existing rotational molding experience regarding the encapsulation of small inserts during molding. The autonomous optimization technique was then applied to minimize the boss weight by controlling the size of design features, while ensuring mechanical perfor mance constraints were met.

Rigby, Dan, Michael Burton, Katherine Payne, Zachary Payne-Thompson, Stuart Wright, and Sarah O’Brien. Impacts of Food Hypersensitivities on Quality of Life in the UK and Willingness to Pay (WTP) to remove those impacts. Food Standards Agency, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.kij502.

Full text
Abstract:
This project concerns the impacts of food hypersensitivity on people’s quality of life and the monetary value people assign to the removal of those impacts. Food hypersensitivities (FHS) are, in this report, defined as comprising food allergy, coeliac disease and food intolerance. Estimates of the economic value of removal of food hypersensitivity were generated from a stated preference (SP) survey in which people completed a discrete choice experiment (DCE). The DCE comprised of choices between (i) no change in respondents’ food hypersensitivity and (ii) the condition being removed for a specified period, at a cost. The surveys were conducted between July and December 2021 by adults regarding their own food hypersensitivity or by parents/carers regarding their child’s food hypersensitivity. The samples comprised 1426 adults and 716 parents. The average WTP for the removal of an adult’s FHS for a year, pooled across all conditions was £718. For models estimated separately by condition, the WTP values for food allergy, coeliac disease and food intolerance were £1064, £1342 and £540 respectively. In models estimated on DCE data from parents regarding their children’s food hypersensitivity the average WTP, pooled across all conditions, was £2501. The annual WTP values by condition were: £2766 for food allergy; £1628 for coeliac disease; £1689 for food intolerance. Respondents rated their (child’s) health and the impacts of their (child’s) FHS using several established instruments including the Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire (FAQLQ); Food Intolerance Quality of Life Questionnaire (FIQLQ); Coeliac Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire, (CDQ). In the adult allergy and intolerance models we find robust evidence of effects of the perceived severity of FHS on WTP – the higher people’s FAQLQ and FIQLQ scores, the more they are willing to pay to remove their condition. There was no effect of variation in the CDQ score on WTP to remove coeliac disease. In the child WTP results we find condition-severity effects in the coeliac sample: the worse the child’s CDQ score the higher the parents’ WTP to remove the condition. The WTP values are estimates of the combined annual costs associated with (i) the intangible costs including the pain, anxiety, inconvenience and anxiety caused by FHS and (ii) additional incurred costs (time and money) and lost earnings. The values can be incorporated into the FSA Cost of Illness (COI) model, the Burden of Foodborne disease in the UK (Opens in a new window) which is currently used to measure the annual, social, cost of foodborne disease. A Best Worst Scaling (BWS) exercise was conducted to identify the relative importance of the many and diverse impacts which comprise the FAQLQ, FIQLQ and CDQ instruments. The BWS results indicate that people assign very different levels of importance to the impacts comprising the three instruments. This unequal prioritisation contrasts with the equal weighting used in the construction of the FAQLQ, FIQLQ and CDQ measures. Embarrassment and fear related to eating out or social situations feature in the top three impacts for all the conditions. Identifying the effects which most affect quality of life (from the perspective of people living with those conditions) has the potential to inform policy and practice by both regulators and private organisations such as food business operators.

Scholl, Lynn, Daniel Oviedo, and Orlando Sabogal-Cardona. Disrupting Personal (In)Security? The Role of Ride-Hailing Service Features, Commute Strategies, and Gender in Mexico City. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003812.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper sheds light on the personal security dimension of ride-hailing from a gender perspective. We explore how features of Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) services affect riders perceptions of security when commuting in ride-hailing services, and how general perceptions of fear of crime shape the way people value such features. Moreover, we analyze the strategies women and men are using to enhance their own security in ride-hailing and factors influencing these strategies. We conducted a survey of users of the TNC DiDi in Mexico City. The statistical methods used are structural equation models SEM and ordered logit models OLOGIT. Results show that women are more likely to value the information made available by ride-hailing applications (e.g., knowing your location or knowing driver information) and the presence of a panic button. The value given to information also increases if a person feels insecure in the streets, in a public transit station or in public transit. People who perceive higher insecurity in the streets have increased positive perceptions of the possibility of travelling without transfers. We also find that women are 64.4% less likely to share ride-hailing trips (pooling) and 2.14 times more likely to share details of their trips through their cellphones.

Psychoanalytic Study on Psychological Features of Young Men «Millionaires» in Modern Provincial Ukraine. Theory and Practice of Modern Psychology, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3873.

Abstract:
The article is based on three cases of private psychoanalytic work with successful businessmen from central and northern parts of Ukraine. The research methodology was psychoanalytic theories devoted to the unconscious meanings of money and the role of money in the psychoanalytic setting, including object theory, drive theory, psychosexual development theory, narcissism theory, Oedipus complex, transference and resistance. What presents the interest of this study are the cases when those who grew up in poverty finally obtains such a desired object — money, wealth, however, something unconscious hinders this person to get satisfied by it and even to admit obtaining it. The presented clinical work was conducted as classic psychoanalysis in person with different duration: 5, 10 and 46 months. Men were asked to tell whatever comes to mind: thoughts, memories, dreams, phantasies, feelings etc. The role of psychoanalyst was to hear specific connections between patient’s stories and to analyze them together with the patient. The cases presented highlight several psychological features of young men «millionaires» who suffer from their own success. 1. Sensitivity to Father’s (real or symbolic) acceptance of their business and financial success. 2. Activation of unconscious Oedipus complex and Complex of castration because of the risk to dethrone the Father in reality, with experiences of guilt, fear and expectation of punishment. 3. Projection of their own envy, hate, wish to avenge and killing phantasies into external objects (friends, partners, psychoanalyst) with building individual defensive strategies from them. These psychological features were associated not only with suffering and psychopathological symptoms but also with impossibility to continue business development. In addition, the cases analyzed in the article show some difficulties in building business connected with the generations gap. Fathers from the USSR or the 90s teach their sons to act in the way that is not relevant for successful careers nowadays. This latent or manifested struggle between generations may be an important factor in abovementioned psychological features.

Seccareccia, Mario, and Guillermo Matamoros. Is “Inflation First” Really “Rentiers First”? The Taylor Rule and Rentier Income in Industrialized Countries. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp209.

Full text
Abstract:
The Taylor rule has returned as a significant policy guide amid increasingly overt political pressures for its official (and not just its implicit) adoption at the US Fed as inflation fears have come to dominate monetary policy actions both in the US and internationally in recent times. Our paper analyzes the effect of monetary policy on the functional distribution of income by reconstructing how the post-1970s “inflation first” policy commitments of central banks came to be crystallized in the Taylor rule. While there are differences among the various specifications of this “rule”, the Taylor relation is merely an offshoot of what can be described generically as the family of Wicksellian reaction functions whose implications support rentier income over time. Because of the internal logic of the Taylor rule, this has led to different interpretations such as, for example, the more Keynesian Yellen rule, which depart from the strict sense of the Taylor rule. The paper also interprets the Taylor Rule in light of Wicksell’s formulation and analyzes the potential consequence of the differences. In contrast to the strict Wicksell rule of “proportional” adjustment, our econometric findings suggest evidence that central banks adjust “over-proportionally” the benchmark money interest rate in the presence of changes in the inflation rate for the complete “inflation first” era since the 1970s until the COVID-19 crisis. They thereby strongly favored rentier incomes in their reaction functions, with the possible exception of the post-financial crisis period. To limit the pro-rentier consequences of such inflation-targeting regimes, it is important that policymakers mandate multiple objectives for central banks, as exemplified in the current US Fed’s dual mandate.

Abstract:
At the start of 2025, the Irish economy is in a strong position. Unemployment stands at 3.9 per cent, while real income growth is set to exceed 3.5 per cent in the current year. Exchequer returns continue to increase quite significantly for the opening period of the present year. Therefore, as a baseline, we expect modified domestic demand (MDD) to increase by 3.0 per cent in 2025 and 2.8 per cent in 2026. These forecasts are conducted on the assumption of no trade tariffs being imposed between the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). However, the international climate is particularly fraught at the present time, with the incoming US administration outlining a series of tariffs on certain countries. The likely deterioration in global trading conditions, which will almost certainly ensue from any trade war, will have adverse implications for the domestic economy. Furthermore, the general uncertainty caused by a changing US economic policy is likely to subdue global activity, lower investment and consumption. We build this into our base case forecasts regardless of the final tariff position. The overall impact of a tariff war on the Irish economy will be compounded if the US specifically targets pharmaceutical products as part of any proposed tariff strategy. We provide an alternative series of forecasts for the traded sector of the Irish economy, highlighting the potential implications of the imposition of a 25 per cent bilateral tariffs on goods. In this alternative scenario, drawing on Egan and Roche (2025), MDD growth is forecast to be 2.8 per cent in 2025 and 2.1 per cent in 2026. Housing supply in 2024 was somewhat disappointing, with completions coming in at 30,330 units, heightening fears that housing costs will continue to escalate in the domestic economy. While numerous factors are likely to be affecting housing supply, in two Boxes in this Commentary, we address the ‘funding gap’ and the policy around rent controls, both of which are likely to weigh on supply.1 A further Box to the Commentary by O’Shea assesses the contribution to domestic output growth of increasing participation rates among the older cohorts of the Irish labour market.
