Abstract:
The buildings of business centers make up a significant part of the development of modern cities. Having different sizes, functional content and architectural and artistic solutions, these complexes are often spatial dominants. The compositional accent formed by them indicates the place of concentration for social activity associated not only with business activity but also often with an entertainment pastime program. The formation of a business center as a specific type of building has a long history from open or semiclosed spaces in ancient times, in which trade operations were carried out,

Abstract Otium(leisure), idleness (ociosidad) and labor (negocio/trabajo) are central categories in Pedro Mexía’s Silva de varia lección (1540), one of the most influential and popular miscellanea of the Early Modern Period, in Spain and Europe. In his work we see the breakdown of the opposition of ocio and negocio in the context of a new aristocratic ideology. Mexía’s reflections on leisure and intellectual labor shed new light on the nature of the mental sufferings of Cervantes’s Don Quijote, and contemporaries’ views of the hidalgo’s favorite pastime: reading.

This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on Bitcoin trading volume. Using data from Apple mobility trends and several time-series econometric models, we find that investors became active participants during the COVID-19 pandemic period and traded more bitcoins on days with low mobility associated with lockdown mandates. These results remain robust after controlling for stocks and gold returns, the VIX index, and the level of attention and sentiment toward Bitcoin, as measured by Google search frequencies and the tone of Tweets discussing Bitcoin. These results suggest that when ind

This article discusses the growth of rugby as the most popular pastime in Swansea for most of the period 1870–1914. It examines how the game shaped an inclusive civic identity from the 1890s and how this was layered alongside other identities. It also examines how social class and gender were negotiated during the game's rise. Swansea's middle class stamped its authority on local government and voluntary institutions and the town's rugby club was among the foremost of these institutions by the end of the 1870s. It is argued that sport offered a unique opportunity for new civic alliances.

Drawing on insights from birdwatching literature published in the same period, I demonstrate that the extreme vilification of the egg collector in both texts represents a dramatic change in attitude towards a pastime that was previously considered beneficial for both adults and children. This about-face, I suggest, can be explained by reading the desperate rush to protect the birds

AbstractThe emergence of mathematical probability has something to do with dice games: all the early discussions (Cardano, Galileo, Pascal) suggest as much. Although this has long been recognized, the problem is that gambling at dice has been a popular pastime since antiquity. Why, then, did gamblers wait until the sixteenth century ce to calculate the math of dicing? Many theories have been offerred, but there may be a simple solution: early-modern gamblers played different sorts of dice games than in antiquity.
