Abstract:
Submarines are considered extremely strategic for any naval army due to their stealth capability. Periscopes are crucial sensors for these vessels, and emerging to the surface or periscope depth is required to identify visual contacts through this device. This maneuver has many procedures and usually has to be fast and agile to avoid exposure. This paper presents and implements a novel architecture for real submarine periscopes developed for future Brazilian naval fleet operations. Our system consists of a probe that is connected to the craft and carries a 360 camera. We project and take the images inside the vessel using traditional VR/XR devices. We also propose and implement an efficient computer vision-based MR technique to estimate and display detected vessels effectively and precisely. The vessel detection model is trained using synthetic images. So, we built and made available a dataset composed of 99,000 images. Finally, we also estimate distances of the classified elements, showing all the information in an AR-based interface. Although the probe is wired-connected, it allows for the vessel to stand in deep positions, reducing its exposure and introducing a new way for submarine maneuvers and operations. We validate our proposal through a user experience experiment using 19 experts in periscope operations.

Abstract:
Media is needed in the learning process to support practicum activities. Practicum tools can be made with simple materials, but must meet the standards or eligibility of the tool. This study aims to make a practicum tool in the form of a simple periscope as an optical learning medium in schools. Periscope is an optical instrument used to see objects from hidden places. Usually, periscopes are used on submarines. However, in this study a simple periscope was made from a flat mirror which can be used as a learning medium in schools. This research is experimental research with the stages of preparation, manufacture and testing of tools. The simple periscope that has been designed is a flat mirror periscope made of PVC pipe, L pipe, and a flat mirror. The results of a simple periscope test in the field are being able to see objects clearly as far as the eye can see, the image shape obtained is virtual, upright, and the same size, while the focal length is half of the object distance

This research develops a detection rate model to analyze the effectiveness of the RDR 1500B search radar installed in the CASA 212 S43 aircraft belonging to Venezuelan Naval Aviation. The model is based on a search and detection mission to find a diesel submarine executing an incursion inside the Venezuelan Caribbean Sea area, assumed to be intermittently operating with periscopes or masts exposed above the sea surface. The analysis obtains cumulative probability of detection vs. time based on the radar manufacturer's performance data, user inputs for aircraft search area size, search speed, and search altitude, and submarine periscope or mast exposure profile. The model can use given periscope radar cross section data, or roughly calculate radar cross section given assumptions about exposed periscope height above the sea-surface and sea-state conditions. Submarine evasion due to radar counterdetection is also modeled.

Moxey, C. E. "Periscopic stereo and large-scale scene reconstruction." Thesis, University of Essex, 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.394110.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents, for the first time, a practical design for a periscopic stereo head and investigates the computer vision tools necessary for 3D reconstruction from periscopic image data. It identifies two possibilities for processing periscope image data. "Corrected", where a two dimensional rotation is applied to the image plane prior to standard stereo processing, or, "uncorrected" which ignores the "tumbling" effect inherent in periscopic image data until the final stage of reconstruction, where the "late" correction circumvents the problem, apparent in many existing stereo algorithms, of resolving disparity measurement in imaged scene structure which is parallel with corresponding epipolar lines. Many of the existing stereo processing tools used in the course of this research require little modification, but have all revealed issues requiring resolution not immediately apparent in previous treatments. This investigation stops short of the actual construction of 3D models but presents a method of generating the sets of depth data required for large-scale scene reconstruction. Feature extraction, image data correspondence, camera calibration and the generation of depth information from periscopic image data are all covered in the context of this dissertation. In particular a new method of combining existing camera calibration techniques, termed "calibration in a box", is presented together with conclusions regarding the tools and techniques employed. While periscopic stereo is still in development, it is only imaging system, reported to date, which is likely to be capable of large-scale, autonomous, 3D scene reconstruction, with particular application to remote operation in hazardous environments.

Bastos, Ricardo S. "Development of a web-based periscope simulator for submarine officer training." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/43873.

Full text
Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
This thesis addresses the instructional gap existent between the theoretical instruction that is typically delivered in the classroom and the hands-on training in periscope simulators. In those navies that adopt the eyes-only or perisher technique for training of periscope depth safety rules, the submarine officers need to gain knowledge and master a series of skills and abilities prior to the training sessions in periscope simulators. This work suggests and explores the use of web-based simulation as a tool to diminish this gap, applying the concept of part-task training to enable the delivery of better-prepared officers to the simulator phase of training and better leverage the time spent at a full-scale simulator. To test this concept, a prototype web-based periscope simulator was developed, and a usability study was conducted among the body of students of the Naval Postgraduate School. The findings revealed that most of the participants were receptive to web-based simulation for training, and that it is a viable and promising field, but some technical caveats were identified. Although this thesis focused on the periscope simulation, the concept can be extended and applied for other domains in which a similar gap can be found between theory and hands-on training.

Abstract:
Live nu! is an essay in media and communication studies covering 15hp. The authors have, by interviewing five Swedish companies, looked at how Periscope as a livestreaming medium is viewed and used for marketing purposes, as well as how it has changed the media climate of today. This by analysing the interwievs in a theoretical context based on theories conserning user generated content and the concept of Webb 2.0 as well as theories on marketing and the creation of value for costumers. Henry Jenkins theory about convergence culture was also applied. Discourse analysis is the method used in the qualitative work that make the foundation of this essay. The material was analysed and categorised using tools such as nodal points, chains of equivalence and articulations. Theories on marketing, user generated content and Webb 2.0 were then used to make a deeper analysis of the content. The results of the study shows Periscope viewed by Swedish companies as a tool to create content on costumers terms. A type of content built on trustworthiness, transparency and, if used in the right way, interactivity. Periscope is seen as a way to achieve a more personal dialog with the target group and to strengthen the brand whilst giving costumers value outside of consumable products.
