Abstract:
AbstractThe paper investigates Gérard Genette’s concept ‘peritext’ in relation to the concepts ‘text’ and ‘work’. It is obvious that Genette regards both text and work (which he tends to mix up) as immaterial entities and conceives the peritext as their way into the material world. The peritext forms a path between the text, considered as a series of linguistic signs, and the physical document, which is the book.Certain peritexts are indeed material (such as the format of the book and its typography). But other peritexts are linguistic, i. e. texts, and as such immaterial (e. g. the preface and the colophon). This ambiguity might be avoided if the term ‘peritext’ was confined to the linguistic ones and the material peritexts were labeled ‘materiality’.Also, Genette’s notion of ‘work’ is ambiguous. On the one hand, he describes a work as synonymous with a text, and on the other hand, he confines the term to a certain class of (literary) texts. None of the notions is in accordance with his argumentation, underneath which lies implicitly the idea of the work as a ‘polytext’.Finally, the paper discusses which peritexts can be regarded as belonging to the whole work, and which belong only to a certain version of the work or to a specific copy (document).

Abstract:
This article argues that the music of opening peritexts within two The Legend of Zelda games reflects their reception history and continuity within the series mythology. On the one hand, “The Legendary Hero” peritext of The Wind Waker mirrors the game's reception history as one of departure from a Zelda tradition established by Ocarina of Time, which caused controversy initially yet gained acceptance in the long term. The audiovisual components of “The Legendary Hero” all position gamers to consider the events of Ocarina of Time as old, submerged under the Great Sea. Textual references to “legend” and “myth,” visual cues of antique art and runes, and musical cues harkening to medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque tropes within Western music—all these serve to depart from Zelda tropes. On the other hand, the title-screen peritext of Twilight Princess restores the legacy of Ocarina of Time. Reception of the former always includes its nostalgic, intimately connected relationship to the latter. Consequently, Twilight Princess garnered immediate praise but became problematic in the long term. The audiovisual components of the title-screen peritext position gamers to reestablish continuity with Zelda tropes. Visual and musical cues reach across several previous games and as far back as the original The Legend of Zelda game, all of which orient players back to traditions from which the franchise had departed for years. Thus the music of the peritext enables players to engage in Zelda's potential for self-reference more apparently than its adoption of Western-music tropes, as in Wind Waker. The peritexts of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess complement each other and allow us to understand more critically the reception and historiography of each game, how the music can reveal a deeper understanding of narrative themes characteristic of each game, and their placement within the Zelda mythology.

Abstract:
Abstract Bruun and Hansen claim that Kierkegaard decided to publish Two Ethical-Religious Essays on commission with Gyldendal so as not to be linked to the penname H.H. Elsewhere, however, Kierkegaard indicates that the Essays, although they stand outside of the authorship, are to be understood in relation to it. Furthermore, Bruun and Hansen do not explain why Kierkegaard chose Gyldendal and not some other house. Drawing on Gérard Genette’s concept of the peritext, I argue that it was Gyldendal’s reputation as a leading theological publisher that led Kierkegaard to select it for a work demarcating the boundary of his authorship.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract As explicit expression of attitude is restrained in translations of canonical texts, the peritext often becomes a place for the translator’s attitudinal mediation. Unlike previous studies where the translational peritext is under the name of the translator, this study presents a special case in which the peritext attached to the translation of the Platform Sutra, a religious text, is attributed to the translator’s teacher, whose lectures in the source language served as the basis of the peritextual commentary. By adopting the appraisal framework, the study demonstrates how explicit attitudes, especially judgements, are instilled in the commentary to direct the readers to see the protagonist Huineng as a hero and many other characters as villains. Despite the apparent attribution of the commentary to the translator’s teacher, the translator plays an active role in reorganizing, translating and sometimes modifying the attitudinal expressions from the original lectures. Putting the commentary under the name of the translator’s teacher functions to further enhance the mediating power of the attitude. The specialness of the case study will make it complementary to existing studies on attitude as mediation.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on how peritexts function in communicating a picturebook's narration and what impact they have on reading comprehension or interpretation. Based on modern narratological theory and research findings of metanarration, this study analyses the metanarrative function of peritexts in three picturebooks: Chester by Mélanie Watt, Black and White by David Macaulay, and Keine Angst vor gar Nichts by Gudrun Likar with illustrations by Manuela Olten. The findings of this study reveal that peritexts in picturebooks display metanarration at both a verbal and a visual level; they reflect the act or process of narration, highlight the book's narrative features, and affect the reader's reception of the picturebook.

Abstract:
Over the past 30 years the Bible has gone digital. This transition from paper technology to digital technology has attracted the interest of scholars because such a change has consequences for how the Bible is used and could lead to differences in how it is understood. Many are claiming that a digital Bible will result in a less stable Bible (Parker, 2003; Pui-lan, 2008; Beal, 2011, pp. 189–190; Wagner, 2012, pp. 20–23; Clivaz, 2014; Holmes, 2016), due to the peritext (the physical aspect of the text) of this new reading technology. However, I argue that this claim does not sufficiently take into account the Bible’s epitext (the nonphysical aspect of the text), through which evangelical Christians engage the scriptures. Ultimately, I argue that the epitext will limit the destabilising effect of the digital peritext.

Abstract:
This article works from the premise that translation, given its hybrid nature, plays a decisive role in constructing discourses of otherness and identity. Orientalist translation is an excellent source for studying the discourse of otherness, while also providing a wealth of information of how “Self” is perceived and represented. In the case of Spanish orientalism, the construction of such discourses is particularly complex due to the nature of the topic under study: al-Andalus, the Arabic name given to those parts of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Muslims at various times in the period between 711 and 1492. According to Martínez Montávez, al-Andalus has always had two facets: the real and historical which ended in 1492, the other figurative and symbolic which has survived until today. This article analyses the peritexts in the translation of a famous Andalusian treatise on geography carried out by José Antonio Conde, one of the first prominent figures in Spanish Arabism. Our analysis applies the semiotic construction model of otherness proposed by Carbonell (2003 and 2004), a model which we have adapted to Foucault’s notions of discourse, discursive structure and statement (ennoncé) (1990 [1969], 2001 [1966], 2002 [1971]), Widdowson’s notions of text, context and pretext (2004) and Genette’s (1987) notion of peritext.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to apply a paratext analysis to investigate what it is in thepackaging of books that can appear attractive to children and what are the distinctiveshared features of popular pupil choices among books. The analysis consists of anexamination of each book and then a comparative section. The analytical categories arethe title and subtitle, author’s name, publisher’s information, cover pictures, the backcover, the spine, the format of the book, endpapers, and the series emblem. Thetheoretical premises are hermeneutics and semiotic interpretations of signs. The studyproceeds from Genette’s concepts of paratext, peritext and epitext. A prominent common feature of the books was series emblems in the form ofmain titles and colours. Another significant conclusion is that the cover often depictssome climactic event in the content of the book. The content and the cover mustharmonize so that the reader will not feel disappointed. The didactic conclusions are thatteachers must have a good understanding of the effect a book cover can have on pupils.Often teachers try to motivate pupils by telling them about the exciting content, but ifthe pupil is not motivated by the paratext, the threshold will be too high. It is of greatrelevance that teachers offer pupils several different books with varying paratexts.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns six Swedish paintings depicting sick or convalescent individuals; Richard Bergh’s Konvalescent (unfinished, 1886), Flickan och Döden (1888), Eva Bonnier’s Magdalena (1887), Gustaf Magnusson’s Konvalescent (1933), Jenny Nyström’s Konvalescenten (1884), and Georg Pauli’s Vid sjukbädden (1885). The purpose of this study is to examine how sickness is portrayed and staged using performative theory and visual semiotics. The thesis takes into account that tuberculosis, being a widespread disease during the 18th and 19th Century, made it a topic of exploration in the contemporary art. With this as the framework the thesis examines whether or not it is possible to diagnose the depicted individuals. The results shows that sickness first and foremost is portrayed and staged in signs regarding the body: the face, the hands, and how the body is posed. Lastly, it is suggested that these artworks can be seen as cultural symbols of TB, since not being viable for a strictly medicinal diagnosis they are more the result of the contemporary need to examine TB and its effects on society and culture. The paintings becomes – such as a body is a vessel for a disease – vessels for the disease culturally speaking.

Augmented Reality (AR) provides real-time information by superimposing virtual information onto users'' view of the real world. Our work is the first to explore how peripheral vision, instead of central vision, can be used to read text on AR and smart glasses. We present PeriText, a multiword reading interface using rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP). This enables users to observe the real world using central vision, while using peripheral vision to read virtual information. We first conducted a lab-based study to compare reading efficiency among 6 different text transformation, 2 retinal eccentricities, and 3 different numbers of words for RSVP paradigm. Another lab-based study followed, investigating the performance of the reading interface design derived from the previous study. Finally, we conducted a field study to collect user feedback while using PeriText in real-world walking scenarios.

EN : The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of such a topical problem as the features of the translation of the English paratexts of the film industry. The object of the work: specificity of paratexts in film industry. The main aim of the paper is to identify the lexico-semantic features of the English titles of the films, taglines and trailers and the specifics of their reproduction into Ukrainian language. The main objectives of the study: • to clarify the status of the paratext in the film industry; • to outline the movie names, their types and functions; • to find out the linguistic status of a tagline and identify its types and functions; •to characterize trailers; • to work out the difficulties that arise in the translation of paratexts; • to analyze the translation of the film, tagline and trailer; • to identify the major translation transformations and strategies that are applied during the translation of paratexts. The scientific novelty of the presented research is that, for the first time, the tools of modern translation studies were involved in identifying the features of translation of film industry paratexts and assessing the adequacy of existing translation options for film titles, taglines and trailers. We defined that the most common translation strategy for film titles is direct translation (60%), the second most used is a partial adaptation strategy (27%), and a less frequent is full adaptation strategy (13%). While analyzing taglines we found out that the most common translation strategy used by translators is direct translation (55%), the second most used is the full transformation strategy (38%), and the third is a partial transformation strategy (7%). Also we defined that the most common translation strategy for trailers is grammatical transformation (54%), the second most used is lexical transformation (43%) and less frequently used by translators is lexico-grammatical transformation (3%).

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the phenomenon of the book as crucial means of communication of the author (of the artistic and non-artistic) text with the reader. The material object book is examined in detail as a product, goods and object of the aesthetic interest. The work focuses primarily on the following questions: What is happening with the text from the moment of the manuscript submission to the publisher until the moment when is held in reader's hands for the first time? What subjects, institutions or interests are entering (or may enter) the game during the production, distribution and sale of the book and what is their particular role? What is the form and function of graphical and peritextual components of the book? All questions are answered in regard to the current state of Czech literary culture.

Abstract:
The objective of the present doctoral thesis is to describe the reception of Czech literature in Spain between 1900 and 2015 with a special emphasis on German as a mediating language for translation between Czech and Spanish, placing Czech research of this phenomenon into a broad international context of investigating the role of languages and cultures in multilingual communities. The thesis further explores issues partially covered by previous research (Uličný 2005, Špirk 2011, 2014, Cuenca 2013). The theoretical part first provides a short historical context of both countries, commenting on their bilateral relations during the 20th century, analysing the publishing sector and describing the official censorship. It then provides a detailed investigation of indirect translations and introduces diverse methods in which they can be explored, highlighting the importance of paratextual material, that is paratexts (Genette 1982, 1987) and metatexts (Popovič 1975, 1983), and the influence of censorship and dominant ideology (Abellán 1980, 1982, 1987; Neuschäfer 1994). Methodologically, the present work relies on Czech and Slovak translation studies (Levý, Popovič) and the Spanish TRACE project (Rabadán, Merino). The empirical part uses the methodological tools of critical discourse analysis, author's...

Abstract:
This research aims to characterize the editorial trajectory of the set of works in the selected corpus and analyse the recent editorial impact resulting from its inclusion in the List of Works and Texts of mandatory or suggested reading of the Curriculum Goals of Portuguese from Basic Education at 1st Cycle. For this, the format, dimensions, covers and spine of all significant editions of Portuguese books of short story and poetry in the list were analysed. The investigation was carried out under the case study methodology and used a data collection tool based on the checklist model. From the analysis of the peritexts of the 55 volumes that make up the corpus, it was found that the implementation of the educational policy generated editorial trends, such as the creation of economic and school editions. It was also identified, in the most recent editions, aesthetic influences typical of the picturebook format.

Abstract:
It is well known that in France the Spanish comedy is not considered a model to be imitated, yet, reading the peritexts (dédicace, avis au lecteur, épître) of the 17th Century French adapters and comparing the imitations with the sources, we can see attitudes that are not always connected to preconceived ideas about the superiority of génie français, both in the consideration that the playwrights reveal towards contemporary Spanish plays, and in their way of adapting them. After outlining the duration and extent of the phenomenon of the seventeenth-century comédie à l'espagnole, the study analyzes the pièces and the peritexts, following two paths: the first investigates the real knowledge and opinion that the French dramatists had of Spanish dramaturgy; the second reconstructs and analyzes the translation methods that, in their forewords, the adapters claim they want to use to make Spanish theatrical texts usable in France, and which they often disregard in their pièces.

Abstract:
This chapter examines paratext as an active element within video games. Paratext, as taken from Gérard Genette's works has often been cited within the context of video games, but not examined in detail. Current scholarship focuses on epitext, but not peritext, which is Genette's primary focus. Mia Consalvo and Peter Lunenfeld's work discuss the epitextual importance of paratext within video games, with only a hint towards the importance of peritext. Through a brief exploration of paratext's history in both literature and games, this chapter will reveal a need for deeper analysis within video game studies. Focusing on in-game, in-system and in-world types of paratexts this paper will attempt to formalise the unaddressed issue of paratext in video games.

Chapter four extends and complicates Gérard Genette’s idea of the peritext—the sidebars, captions, footnotes, introduction, notes for teachers, and other aspects of textual apparatus—to look at how nonfiction employs these devices to centralize debate or push it to the margins

Abstract:
Chapter 2 provides an introduction and discussion of Sudhā’s peritext as well as of Gaṅgā Pustak Mālā and Sudhā’s contributors, objectives, customer care, and marketing strategies. It begins with a horizontal reading of the periodical, showing how it consisted of two major parts that disseminated knowledge through the essay and through poetry and fiction offering a blend of ‘education’ and ‘entertainment’ (Part I) and through a diversity of more practically oriented columns, one of which was a readers’ digest and a lengthy editorial, which also offered a blend of entertaining and educational knowledge (Part II). It considers the periodical’s visual layout as central to understanding its positioning as modern while also being rooted in Vaishnava tradition and devotion towards Rama and Krishna in particular. The visuals are also indicative of new conceptualizations of women in liminal spaces and their relationship to the publishing world in the Hindi public sphere.

Abstract:
In traditional scholarly editions of music, peritext only plays a minor role so far. Peritexts can be defined as integral components of a score, for example a foreword, that are not part of the musical text. Especially in New Music, which is often intentionally breaking with implicit performance traditions, peritexts might offer essential information, e. g. on the arrangement of instruments and personal on the stage, about the used effects and hardware, and on verbal instructions to the interpreters. Encoding this information to be fully accessible for a scholarly digital music edition, is an important challenge. The poster is explaining this issue using an example by Joachim Krebs.
