Coumarin (1,2-Benzopyrone or 2H-1-benzopyran-2-one, or phenylpropanoids, 1) and its derivatives (coumarins) are widely distributed throughout nature and many exhibit useful and diverse biological activities1,2. Coumarins occur as secondary metabolites in the seeds, roots and leaves of many plant species, notably in high concentration in the tonka bean and thus the name comes from a French word, coumarou, for the tonka bean. Their function is far from clear, although suggestions include plant growth regulations, fungistasis, bacteriostasis and, even, waste products3 . Some naturally occurring c

In each case, organisms influence surface/liquid interfacial reactions and are responsible for accelerating oxidation- or reduction-coupled mineral/metal dissolution. Hydrogen is a widely used microbial energy source which can serve as an electron donor to drive microbial iron reduction or accelerate the rate of the cathodic reaction during anaerobic corrosion. Abstract:
Abstract Corrosion of aluminum-clad spent nuclear fuel being stored in the light-water filled basins at the Savannah River Site was first observed in mid-1991. A corrosion surveillance program was initiated at that time in the P, K, and L-Reactor basins and in the Receiving Basin for Offsite Fuels (RBOF). This program verified the aggressive nature of the pitting corrosion and provided recommendations for changes in basin operations to permit extended longer term interim storage. The changes were implemented during 1994-1996 and have resulted in significantly improved basin water quality with

Abstract Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a serious problem that impacts nearly all industries and exacts a severe toll in terms of operating costs, loss of production, deterioration of capital equipment and the consequences of corrosion related failures. While a proactive step, monitoring for MIC-associated microorganisms is often hindered by the fact that sampling methods may not capture key members of the microbial community involved in MIC (sampling biases) and current reliance on conventional culture-dependent methods may underestimate and oversimplify the problem (cultivat

Van der Waals complexes are loosely bound clusters of atoms or molecules which can be made conveniently by free jet expansions of pure or mixed vapors through a supersonic nozzle. Although these complexes are bound only by 0-0.2 eV, they have unique geometries that can be determined by techniques such as microwave spectroscopy (1). These species are of considerable interest not simply from the perspectives of molecular structure and thermodynamics, but more so because they are, for chemically reactive pairs, frozen collision complexes which can be isolated long enough to permit inspection of f

Abstract An organic waste gasification scheme based on the use of a new reactor concept has been investigated. The gasifier includes an intermediate heat carrier matrix, moving opposite to the gas stream. A technical embodiment of the concept is presented and a computational model for the description of the process in the reactor is developed. The first stage of the experimental study demonstrates the possibility of a two-phase counter-flow concept as a mean of providing super-adiabatic conditions, which are expected to enhance weak exothermic reactions and endothermic gasification reactions i

Abstract:
People with food allergies may experience food allergic reactions due to accidental exposure. These reactions are commonly categorised as non-severe, fatal food anaphylaxis and near-fatal food anaphylaxis. Non-severe allergic reactions to food are more common with an incidence of up to 1,000 times greater than fatal food-related anaphylaxis. However, obtaining accurate data relating to the circumstances under which these reactions occurred is challenging under the current diagnosis coding system used in the National Health Service (NHS). This project addressed two key questions: What are the t

Abstract:
There is a large literature showing that fiscal policy is either acyclical or countercyclical in industrial countries and procyclical in developing countries. Most of this literature is based on OLS regressions that focus on the correlation between a fiscal variable (usually the budget balance or expenditure growth) and either GDP growth or some measure of the output gap. This paper argues that such a methodology does not permit the identification of the effect of the business cycle on fiscal policy and hence cannot be used to estimate policy reaction functions. The paper proposes a new instru

The world is urgently facing the need for a “green transformation”, involving not only a transition towards the use renewable energy and reduction of biodiversity loss, but a deep social change towards social justice and sustainability. Such action requires social compromises between elites and popular sectors that allow the building of strong institutions to implement changes. Latin America is faced with huge tasks to increase equality, justice and sustainability, but it also plays a pivotal role in the global green transformation. When it comes to assess the sustainability of fiscal policy and public debt in Andean countries, two idiosyncratic facts of fiscal revenues have to be considered. First, fiscal revenues coming from natural resources represent up to 44% of total fiscal revenues, producing a strong correlation between terms of trade and the overall fiscal balance, ranging from 0.79 in Ecuador to 0.90 in Peru. Second, in most of Andean countries, it is the sovereign who exploits the natural resource by its own and who extends transfers to the private sector according to the results of that exploitation. The aim of this research project was to obtain information on the role of the cytochrome b559 in the function of Photosystem-II (PSII) with special emphasis on the light induced photo inactivation of PSII and turnover of the photochemical reaction center II protein subunit RCII-D1. The major goals of this project were: 1) Isolation and sequencing of the Chlamydomonas chloroplast psbE and psbF genes encoding the cytochrome b559 a and b subunits respectively; 2) Generation of site directed mutants and testing the effect of such mutation on the function of PSII under various light conditions; 3)
