Abstract:

Abstract:
Föreliggande uppsats undersöker hur brevromanen The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999) av Stephen Chbosky transformeras och blir film. Vidare studeras brevromansgenren och berättartekniken i de två medierna och detta görs genom ett genusperspektiv. Det huvudsakliga målet för min undersökning är att genomföra en komparativ studie mellan roman och film. I undersökningen analyseras exempel ur romanen och filmen som har ett samband till uppsatsens inriktningar; brevromansgenren och berättartekniken. Undersökningen visar att romanen The Perks of Being a Wallflower är lik dagboksromanen i dess uppyggnad och att romanen innehåller typiska ungdomslitterära motiv.

Abstract:
Ce mémoire de maîtrise propose une étude détaillée des répercussions sociales et psychologiques des évènements traumatiques sur le développement de l’enfant en utilisant trois Bildungsromane importants, The Catcher in the Rye de J.D. Salinger, The Outsiders de S.E. Hinton et The Perks of Being a Wallflower de Stephen Chbosky.
This thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

Carrillo-Vincent, Matthew. "The work of being a wallflower| The peripheral politics of male sentimentality." Thesis, University of Southern California, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3598174.

Full text
Abstract:

One need not strain to find examples of male sentimentality in contemporary US popular culture: From frequent news stories on "Weeper of the House" John Boehner, to the success of Judd Apatow's poignant "bromance" movies, to last year's film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's celebrated adolescent novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999), the man of feeling seems more present and popular than ever. With an unsettling display of excessive emotion emanating from the male body, each iteration provokes in viewers, listeners, and cultural critics any one of several disparate responses: Whether committed to the transgressive potential of a male who feels different because he offers vulnerability where others offer hardened restraint, or whether insistent in the claim that these texts simply add to what Gail Bederman would call the "remaking" of a continually complex normative subject, we find in the man of feeling an ambivalent subject for the public sphere. The initial question for readers, listeners, or viewers is often a simple one: is male sentimentality transformative and progressive, or is it pathetic and self-serving? But the presumption that we must answer one way or another belies the historical and cultural complexity of the man of feeling, and merely reinforces a kind of political approach to reading that simply replicates our own attitudes and relation to normativity and its privileges. This dissertation—under the impulse of recent work in queer theory and affect to reach closer to, rather than further from, normativity—takes up the counterintuitive position that we might draw this unlikely subject of the wallflower out from the sidelines and use him to interrogate normativity not from outside, but rather beside, its unsteady borders. It asks a central question—What does it mean for a critique of normativity to come from the normative subject?—and argues that the "peripheral" reading of normativity he helps enable might serve to render the logics of normativity in different ways than we can with more traditionally oppositional forms of critique.

Some translators tend to sugar coat their translation without considering t the factors of faithfulness and integrity. Therefore, I tried to examine what translating strategies were adopted to deal with phrases of cultural significance and whether the target text is faithful to the source text through back translation. In this study, there are two parts: first, the strategies employed by the translator to cope with those words and phrases would be briefly discussed; secondly, the translation will be tested by back translation so as to examine whether it is faithful to the original text or not. For the second part, the translated text would be broken down into four categories for further analysis. Therefore, several translating strategies were identified employed by the translator to deal with different types of phrases. What's more, from the process of back translating the phrases, I have discovered fundamental differences existing between Chinese and English: registers of language, simplicity of language, and specificity of language, which could shed new light on the translation and language learning.
