Abstract:
After traditional academics mobilized university autonomy against government intervention and supported the coup d’état against Hugo Chávez, his government created a parallel system of public universities. María Egilda Castellano headed the effort to extend university access to poor Venezuelans. The events of her terms as vice minister of education (1999–2002) and rector of the Bolivarian University (2003–2004) and her subsequent career show the difficulty the Bolivarian government has had in creating sustainable institutions and challenge the applicability of the concept of permanent revolution to the Bolivarian process.

Abstract:
One of the basic questions of concern in mathematical biology is the long-term survival of each species in a set of populations. This question is particularly puzzling for a natural system with omnivory due to the fact that simple mathematical models of omnivory are prone to species extinction. Omnivory is defined as the consumption of resources from more than one trophic level. In this work, we investigate three omnivory models of increasing complexity. We use the notion of permanent coexistence, or permanence, to study the long-term survival of three interacting species governed by a mixture of competition and predation. We show the permanence of our models under certain parameter restrictions and include the biological interpretations of these parameter restrictions. Sensitivity analysis is used to obtain important information about meaningful parameter data collection. Examples are also given that demonstrate the ubiquity of omnivory in natural systems.

Abstract:
When forensic examiners try to identify the perpetrator of a felony, they use individual facial marks when comparing the suspect with the perpetrator. Facial marks are often used for identification and they are nowadays found manually. To speed up this process, it is desired to detect interesting facial marks automatically. This master thesis describes a method to automatically detect and separate permanent and non-permanent marks. It uses a fast radial symmetry algorithm as a core element in the mark detector. After candidate skin mark extraction, the false detections are removed depending on their size, shape and number of hair pixels. The classification of the skin marks is done with a support vector machine and the different features are examined. The results show that the facial mark detector has a good recall while the precision is poor. The elimination methods of false detection were analysed as well as the different features for the classifier. One can conclude that the color of facial marks is more relevant than the structure when classifying them into permanent and non-permanent marks.

Abstract:
A solution to the longstanding problem of sensorless control of an electrical machine is provided in this work. That is, the construction of an asymptotically stable controller that regulates the mechanical speed of the motor, measuring only the electrical coordinates. The result is presented for a non-salient permanent magnet synchronous motor perturbed by an unknown constant load torque. The proposed scheme is a fourth order nonlinear observer-based controller that does not rely on-intrinsically nonrobust-operations like open-loop integration of the systems dynamical model nor signal differentiation, and can be easily implemented in real time. The controller is easy to commission, with the tuning gains directly determining the convergence rates of the position, speed and load torque observers. Simulation and experimental results that illustrate the good performance, as well as the robustness to parameter uncertainty, of the scheme are presented. A simulated comparison with a sensorless field-oriented controller, recently proposed in the drives literature, is also carried out. The thesis is closed with some concluding remarks and some potential research topics generated from this work

Abstract:
In this work, we present the design of artificial permanent cyclodextrin-based channels, obtained by divergent polymerization. Selective modifications of cyclodextrins have been developed to generate original initiators of ethylene oxide ring-opening polymerization. Considering the experimental conditions used, the demonstration of controlled polymerization was performed, leading to molecules with 14 PEO arms having various molar masses. Among various applications, we focused on the possibility to use this new class of star-polymer architectures as permanent ionic channels exhibiting long residence time (hour scale), paving the way to translocation of molecules and macromolecules for example
