Abstract:

Bazin, Quentin. "Perplexités, Institutions, Créativités : De l’art brut au laboratoire itinérant." Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSE3046.

Abstract:
By pointing out the importance of working to heal the culture that is sick, by saying that what matters is happening in the interstices of society, art brut is not without normative and identity reflexes. How can we measure of the novelty implied by the art brut without serving its contradictions ? How to tell the art brut, which we consider capable of invigorating our creativities, without renewing the domination of the othernesses which preside over his works ?This survey seeks to understand the notion of art brut by considering that its productions, its speeches and its effects reflect a new conception of creativity, which feeds the common through what is out of the ordinary. The first movement explore the significant components of art brut (phantasies about otherness, primitivity, intensity, singularity, but also the powers of mutation and conflict of raw productions), as well as registers of speeches about his productions. The next movement descends along the raw conceptual imaginary to approach a metaphysics of creativity. It articulates the components of art brut and redesigns the relationship to subjectivities, aesthetic experiences and institutions (this term referring to establishments, but also language, instituted meanings and behaviors). The last movement goes back from concepts to a proposal of organized practices, taking place in a cultural policy attentive to relations with institutions, minor creativities and inequalities in the legitimacy to create. These practices are organized around a mobile laboratory project in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, whose functions are the transmission of news about local cultural biodiversity, the animation of workshops and collective projects in the public spaces and in institutions, as well as research on popular creativity and their potential for social transformation

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis aims to study the evangelizing action of the catholic missionaries at present equatorial guinea region, between the years 1858 (beginning of the effective spanish colonization) and 1910 (when the author esteems that the missionary model has been definitely consolidated). That's why ail interventions that took place there have been studied, paying especial attention to the jesuit experiences and above all to the claretian ones. It has been tried to systematize them by means of the description of the opposed proceeding models: thus, the claretian model that finally prevailed, would object to the jesuit one as well as to the french spiritains order, but it would find its own roots in the tradition of the christian countries missions carried out in the metropolitan territory and in the complementary tasks of those other institutes. The originality, then, would lie in a gradual building of a new evangelization model in a small place, where the claretians could make use of a surprising freedom of action such as the resources to their own disposal; and in the putting into practice a way of doing that, although it was also opposed to the model supported by the state, it integrated many guinean young people in the colonial productive system based in the cocoa farming. The thesis examines the claretian expansion, parallely started to the berlin conference, the progressive progress of the new model, the boarding schools way of working, the differentiated behaviour in the capital and out of the capital, the problems caused to the native communities and to the state administration, and the resultant ones

Abstract:

Crawford, Noah Frazier. "A Matter of Increasing Perplexity: Public Perception, Treatment, and Military Influence of Refugees in the Shenandoah Valley During the American Civil War." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/104054.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which definitions and perceptions of refugees in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia evolved over the course of the American Civil War. It investigates perspectives from individuals in both the United States and Confederate States to illustrate how misconceptions about refugees—who they were, what they wanted, and how they could benefit each side—dominated how displaced people were discussed. I argue that despite significant attention to refugees in newspapers, military reports, and among the public, both sides failed to adequately assist refugees who were displaced as a result of the war. Utilizing a broadly chronological approach allows greater insight into how the situation in the Shenandoah Valley escalated over time with the addition of various refugee demographic groups, including white Unionists, Black self-emancipated people, deserters, and pro-Confederate civilians. This thesis discusses how each of these groups challenged Americans' culturally-constructed definition of the word "refugee." It also demonstrates how military commanders made use of refugees as sources of military intelligence who directly influenced the events of several military campaigns. This thesis argues that misconceptions about refugees hindered an effective and meaningful response to the Valley's refugee crisis among government officials, military officers, and the general populaces of the North and the South.
Master of Arts
The devastation wrought by the American Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia sparked a refugee crisis that grew in size over the course of the war. From the earliest days of the conflict in 1861, Americans correctly predicted that the war would displace many people. However, mistaken ideas about who qualified as a refugee and what to do with or for refugees prevented an effective response that could have alleviated the suffering of many of these people. This thesis examines how Americans struggled to understand refugees as matters of gender, race, and loyalty appeared to complicate the subject. It offers insight into not only how Americans perceived refugees, but also explores refugee experiences in order to illuminate voices that were overlooked both in the 1860s and in the decades since the war.

Abstract:
In the big data context, the growing volume of textual data presents challenges for traditional structured data-based decision support systems (DSS). DSS based on structured data is difficult to process the semantic information of text data. To meet the challenge, this thesis proposes a solution for the Decision Support System (DSS) based on machine Learning and qualitative analysis, namely TLE-DSS. TLE-DSS refers to three critical analytical modules: Thematic Analysis (TA), Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)and Evolutionary Grounded Theory (EGT). To better understand the operation mechanism of TLE-DSS, this thesis used an experimental case to explain how to make decisions through TLE-DSS. Additionally, during the data analysis of the experimental case, by calculating the difference of perplexity of different models to compare similarities, this thesis proposed a solution to determine the optimal number of topics in LDA. Meanwhile, by using LDAvis, a model with the optimal number of topics was visualized. Moreover, the thesis also expounded the principle and application value of EGT. In the last part, this thesis discussed the challenges and potential ethical issues that TLE-DSS still faces.

Abstract:
In Num. 21: 4-9, after complaining against God, the Israelites were punished with a plague of venomous serpents. Following their apology, God commanded Moses to fashion a bronze serpent and mount it on a standard; the bitten were to look at it to recover. The use of the serpent form is striking, as it seems to boldly negate the fundamental Torah law, which prohibits the use of any images or statues. To gain better insight into the narrative, the first section of this work explores a possible context for it, based on archaeological findings. The second section focuses on the two prominent Egyptian elements contained in the narrative, the serpent and the standard, whose local symbolism is evaluated. The third section explores whether there are ancient Near Eastern parallels for the healing serpent. The narrative, in the fourth section, is examined according to its inner-Biblical interpretation. As the episode is the last of the ten wilderness complaint sequences, each is analyzed for a comprehensive understanding of Num. 21: 4-9; what elements, if any, are unique to it, and might have contributed the narrative's use of this peculiar remedy?

Senturk, Sertan. "Computational modeling of improvisation in Turkish folk music using Variable-Length Markov Models." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/42761.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis describes a new database of uzun havas, a non-metered structured improvisation form in Turkish folk music, and a system, which uses Variable-Length Markov Models (VLMMs) to predict the melody in the uzun hava form. The database consists of 77 songs, encompassing 10849 notes, and it is used to train multiple viewpoints, where each event in a musical sequence are represented by parallel descriptors such as Durations and Notes. The thesis also introduces pitch-related viewpoints that are specifically aimed to model the unique melodic properties of makam music. The predictability of the system is quantitatively evaluated by an entropy based scheme. In the experiments, the results from the pitch-related viewpoints mapping 12-tone-scale of Western classical theory and 17 tone-scale of Turkish folk music are compared. It is shown that VLMMs are highly predictive in the note progressions of the transcriptions of uzun havas. This suggests that VLMMs may be applied to makam-based and non-metered musical forms, in addition to Western musical styles. To the best of knowledge, the work presents the first symbolic, machine-readable database and the first application of computational modeling in Turkish folk music.

Abstract Using a combined methodology of narrative inquiry and action research, this study explored actions and changes in the author, a teacher of an inclusive class, and Chiangchiang (pseudonym), a student with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), over a two-year period of learning and adaptation. Through self-reflection as a teacher, the author conducted an in-depth investigation into the traces of changes in her and the student as well as the growth opportunities for both of them. Based on personal experiences and experiences with Chiangchiang, the author used staged action plans to gradually learn her beliefs and value expectations. Through writing and self-reflection, she had cognitive changes and obtained a new direction for future actions. During the research period, she constantly adjusted her action plans in response to contextual needs and used a narrative approach to induce self-awakening and self-criticism. The main findings are as follows: 1. Through self-exploration, she found that all the barriers to her interaction with Chiangchiang were related to the stark contrast in the family of origin and the environment between them. While the author had a smooth journey in pursuit of education, Chiangchiang suffered developmental deficits; she has a happy family life, but Chiangchiang lost his parent in childhood; she always has a hope, but he is aimless in life. 2. Through constant adjustment of actions in response to contextual needs, the author found personal weaknesses and the need to seek proper assistance at the right time; she also realized that a child’s growth takes time and learned to “offer companionship” and “wait”. 3. Through actions, changes, and self-reflection, the author developed the class management strategies that would be adopted by regular class teachers. She also induced effective strategies for co-growing with students with ADHD, including creating a positive class atmosphere, employing an assistant teacher to provide assistance, the sandwich feedback technique, and seeking external assistance, in order to build a professional support system. 4. Through this study, the author gained more confidence in dealing with different teaching contexts and in promoting inclusive education. Callaghan, Liam. "An evaluation of latent Dirichlet allocation in the context of plant-pollinator networks." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/5252.

Full text
Abstract:
There may be several mechanisms that drive observed interactions between plants and pollinators in an ecosystem, many of which may involve trait matching or trait complementarity. Hence a model of insect species activity on plant species should be represented as a mixture of these linkage rules. Unfortunately, ecologists do not always know how many, or even which, traits are the main contributors to the observed interactions. This thesis proposes the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model from artificial intelligence for modelling the observed interactions in an ecosystem as a finite mixture of (latent) interaction groups in which plant and pollinator pairs that share common linkage rules are placed in the same interaction group. Several model selection criteria are explored for estimating how many interaction groups best describe the observed interactions. This thesis also introduces a new model selection score called ``penalized perplexity". The performance of the model selection criteria, and of LDA in general, are evaluated through a comprehensive simulation study that consider networks of various size along with varying levels of nesting and numbers of interaction groups. Results of the simulation study suggest that LDA works well on networks with mild-to-no nesting, but loses accuracy with increased nestedness. Further, the penalized perplexity tended to outperform the other model selection criteria in identifying the correct number of interaction groups used to simulate the data. Finally, LDA was demonstrated on a real network, the results of which provided insights into the functional roles of pollinator species in the study region.

Abstract:
Software development requires the use of external Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in order to reuse libraries and frameworks. Programmers often struggle with unfamiliar APIs due to their lack of resources or less common design. Such difficulties often lead to an incorrect sequences of API calls that may not produce the desired outcome. Language models have shown the ability to capture regularities in text as well as in code. In this work we explore the use of n-gram language models and their ability to capture regularities in API usage through an intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation of these models on some of the most widely used APIs for the Java programming language. To achieve this, several language models were trained over a source code corpora containing several hundreds of GitHub Java projects that use the desired APIs. In order to fully assess the performance of the language models, we have selected APIs from multiple domains and vocabulary sizes. This work allowed us to conclude that n-gram language models are able to capture the API usage patterns due to their low perplexity values and their high overall coverage, going up to 100% in some cases, which encouraged us to create a code completion tool to help programmers stay in the right path when using unknown APIs while allowing for some exploration.

Abstract:
Arabic text. Arabic summary and keywords cannot be copied into meta data fields
The importance of this research is evident from the field related to it; namely, that of reports about circumstances for Qur’anic revelations. Without a comprehensive knowledge of it, many of the subtleties and nuances of Qur’anic discourse remain concealed from us. For this purpose, I used al-Suyuti’s "Lubab al-Nuqul fi Asbab al-Nuzul" for the pivotal and comprehensive role it occupies among works dealing with this discipline. Briefly, my methodology was the following: I first presented a summary of the author’s biography. Secondly, I edited the manuscript I had obtained of this book from the King Faisal Library in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Thirdly, I made comparisons between this version and numerous printed versions of this book in order to verify the authenticity of textual information I presented in this thesis by categorising Prophetic and other reports at the levels of their soundness and weakness so that the reader may obtain a firm insight into their status levels. Fourthly, I amended reports that al-Suyuti had omitted in relation to verses he had cited. Fifthly, I graded different reports on a topic according to established criteria in this subject; often reconciling them where it was possible. I interpreted verses in their general purport by indicating that the report/s relating to the circumstances for revelation was/were already embodied in their signification. I only deviated from this norm where I found that a body of reliable scholars had given preference to a particular report vis-à-vis a certain verse; in which case I adopted their opinion. Sixthly, I attached brief commentaries to relevant verses to enable the reader to gain a more comprehensive grasp of text within its context. Finally, I defined some peculiar terminology found in this book for the benefit of unfamiliar researchers.
