Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relation between executive perquisite consumption and indicators of corporate governance after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) expanded the disclosure requirements related to perquisites. Design/methodology/approach This study uses ordinary least squares and Tobit regressions to examine the dollar value of perquisites consumed, the number of perquisites consumed and the types of perquisites consumed. Findings The analysis shows that firms with weak corporate governance are more likely to award perquisites to executives. Firms characterized as being more prone to the presence of agency problems are associated with greater levels of perquisite consumption. Finally, there is evidence that not all perquisite consumptions can be attributed to an agency problem. Efficiently operating firms are associated with greater levels of perquisite consumption as are larger firms. Research limitations/implications The authors examine firms in the period immediately after the SEC initiated the expanded disclosures. This may limit the generalizability of the results to other exchange-listed firms that changed their perquisite policy as a result of the rule change. Originality/value The paper extends the literature on corporate governance and mandatory corporate disclosure by investigating the association between corporate governance characteristics and perquisite consumption. This paper examines this relation immediately after the SEC expanded the disclosures surrounding perquisites to provide the public with more transparent disclosures.

Abstract:
This paper explores Canadian market data on CEO perquisites gathered by a large consulting firm over the period from 1971 to 2008. Perquisites are one of the least documented total compensation components in the academic literature on executive pay. Scant existing literature may be due to the relatively recent and limited corporate disclosures on CEO perquisites, as well as to the comparatively modest monetary value of perquisites relative to other total CEO compensation components. Meanwhile, CEO perquisites regularly capture the public’s imagination in the media because of some perceived excesses, such as immoderate personal use of corporate aircraft (see Rajan & Wulf, 2006). We document a significant evolution in CEO perquisites practices over the period. Consistent with a nascent body of literature, this paper supports empirically hypotheses arguing that CEO perquisites do not uniquely occur as a result of an agency problem, the main theoretical explanation for their existence as of yet, but that they can also serve a legitimate, value-creating, business purpose for the benefit of shareholders.

Abstract. The purpose of this longitudinal study is to test the association between satisfaction with traditional benefits and perquisites and turnover via the mediating effect of organizational commitment. Data come from a series of electronic surveys conducted among a sample of new employees working in the Canadian division of a large international Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) firm. Results indicate that while satisfaction with traditional benefits has both a direct and indirect effect on turnover, satisfaction with perquisites only has an indirect effect on turnover via organizational commitment. Results also show that satisfaction with traditional benefits has a stronger impact on turnover than satisfaction with perquisites.

Abstract:
The research is purposely designed for determining perquisites in private sector through ownership, either those which are affiliated in business group and non-group; or family and group ownership non-family ownership and group affiliated. Moreover, the research examines either perquisites in private sectors is really exist on different stage of firm cycle, and different ownership structure. There will be 2 hypotheses with 8 minor hypotheses based on four firm’s stages. This research uses linear regression Pooled Least Square with interaction variables. The result showed that perquisites manager’s occurred on maturity stage in group and family group. The tendency showed that cash flow is used to maintain manager behavior by monitoring mechanism of debt policy. In the growth stage, this research is able to explain that cash flow is used for perquisites and managers tend to use it; however debt is used to bonding such perquisites behavior. Moreover, this research also found that ownership concentration also minimizes manager’s perquisites. The major differences of this research compared to the previous research are the proposed arguments in which companies are divided into group and non-group affiliation, and also family and non-family group. Besides, this research divides the companies groups into different stages such as maturity, growth, star, and decline.

Abstract:
SummaryThis paper examines the character and significance of embezzlement in the woollen industry of the West of England in the years from c. 1750 to 1840 in the light of the recent debate which sees the period as witnessing major developments in the eradication of perquisites and in the formulation of the wage. It examines the dimensions of embezzlement, its correlation with economic fluctuations and its importance for the economy of both the clothier and the embezzling worker. It shows that tighter legislative sanctions failed to check the illicit trade in embezzled wool, which by the early nineteenth century constituted a well-organised black market, and it considers the effect of this trade in “slinge” upon economic and social relations in the industry.

Abstract:
During the eighteenth-century the busiest part of London's port was an area on the North Bank of the Thames, from London Bridge in the west, to Limehouse, in the east. It was here that many ships and smaller vessels loaded and unloaded their cargo, and goods were often moved into nearby warehouses or stored on the quays themselves. As the volume of trade increased during this period, so too did congestion on the waterfront, providing ample opportunities for the appropriation of' many goods, especially those in transit. However, the appropriation of goods was something that could be interpreted in different ways. For example, many appropriations were viewed as criminous. First, those cases that were deemed petty were often dealt with in the City of London's Court of' Summary Jurisdiction, the famous Bridewell. Other offences, which magistrates and prosecutors preferred to see as more serious, were prosecuted by indictment and therefore came before the Court of the Old Bailey. Furthermore, Dockside Constables also had a special part to play in detecting and apprehending suspects. Their role in the chain of decision-making constituted another variable in the complex legal mechanisms. Other appropriations were not seen as criminal at all, but rather as the legitimate payment or perquisite of workers in return for a service rendered. However, employers, employees and constables sometimes disagreed (or were uncertain) about the boundaries of legitimacy and, on such occasions, an appropriation was liable to be interpreted as theft. Cases that could only be resolved in Court, particularly those which led to an Old Bailey appearance, have left some important testimonial evidence. That, therefore allows an investigation of the fine line, which divided perquisites and pilfering on the London Docks.

"Flying High: The Effect of Organizational Status on CEO Perquisites." Doctoral diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53694.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This dissertation explores the determinants of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) perquisites, i.e., nonmonetary compensation offered to particular employees and not essential to the accomplishment of a CEO’s duties. While the current CEO perquisite literature has focused on understanding the economic determinants of CEO perquisites, I study the social-psychological determinants of perquisites. Specifically, I propose that organizational status is positively associated with CEO perquisites. The status literature suggests that high-status organizations derive benefits from status and status signals, while agency theory proposes that perquisites are a way for CEOs to extract private rents. Therefore, I posit that for high-status organizations, the benefits derived from certain CEO perquisites may negate the costs associated with those perquisites. I examine a specific CEO perquisite: the mandatory use of corporate aircraft for personal travel. Prior research and the popular press suggest that this perquisite is often seen not only as a status signal but also as an agency cost. Accordingly, I hypothesize that higher status organizations and organizations with higher status directors are more likely than lower status organizations or organizations with lower status directors to mandate their CEOs to use corporate aircraft for personal travel. I also propose that the effect is stronger for low- or high-status organizations than for middle-status organizations. In addition, I hypothesize five contingencies moderating the above relationships. I examine hypothesized relationships using a sample of S&P 500 organizations, and I find support for many of my hypotheses. This dissertation contributes to both status and executive compensation literature.

This study examines the relationship between audit fee and CEO perquisites with Entrenchment Index, after the implement of SOX Act. Wysocki (2010) indicates that the CEO compensation is significantly positive linked with the audit fees. However, Kim et al. (2011) indicate this positive relation between CEO compensation and audit fees is mitigated for the firms which have better corporate governance. Furthermore, there is no study uses the CEO perquisites to examine the relation with audit fee. In that case, I use the Entrenchment Index (See Bebchuk, Cohen and Ferrell (2009)) to be a standard of corporate governance, and examine the relationship between audit fee and perquisites. The evidence shows that the firm with higher corporate governance quality (lower E-index), the committee will ask for higher audit quality. Furthermore, the relation between audit fee and perquisites is significantly negative. However, this negative relation will be mitigated when the firm is under better corporate governance.

Title of Thesis: The Study of the Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students in Taiwan Name of Institute: Department of Education Policy and Administration Pages: 230 Nation Chi Nan University Graduate Date: 2006/6 Degree: Master of Education Student: Cheng-Wen Chuan Supervisor: Dr. Fwu-Yuan Weng Abstract This research aims to evaluate the Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students which the government has followed over the years in order to improve the educational situation of the aboriginal students. The objectives of the research are as follows: 1. To understand the historical and social background which resulted in this policy. 2. To analyze relevant educational policies in other countries in order to make contribution to our policy-making. 3. To examine the impact of the policy upon Taiwanese Aborigines. 4. To investigate the negative effects of the policy on the Aboriginal students when trying to enter higher education. 5. To evaluate the possibility of the policy for developing the ability of the students to learn their own culture and native language. This research is conducted by two major methods: literature analysis and questionnaire survey. The literature analysis focuses on the discussions of the contexts of the Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students and the relevant policies on Aboriginal students in other countries. The questionnaire survey is used to gather the opinions of the directors, teachers and students of certain prioritized schools on the Perquisite Admission Policy. These schools are recognized as main foci and selected by the government for promoting Aboriginal students. The result of the survey is evaluated by the statistical methods, such as description statistics, a letter effect analysis and the mean value difference examination. In addition, the result is also examined by the t test and the single factor variation number analysis in order to investigate the different opinions of the tested people who are from various backgrounds. The data from this questionnaire survey is most the valuable part of this research. The literature review of the research leads to believe that the Perquisite Admission Policy for aboriginal students is so far the most effective policy in terms of improving the education condition of the aboriginal students. Compared with educational policies on Indigenous People in other countries, our policy to increase the marks of entrance examination for aboriginal students in order to allow them to enter schools is indeed particular. From the result of questionnaire survey, we discover that directors, teachers and students highly evaluate the Perquisite Admission Policy for aboriginal students. They also respond supportively to the policy. However, the findings tell that directors, teachers and students have different opinions or responses to the policy. For example, the factors which may influence directors and teachers are firstly the ethnic background; secondly, the positions at school, gender, and the type of schools; lastly, the administrative area of school and the percentage of aboriginal students. As to students, the administrative area is the most influential factor. Other factors do not reveal many differences. To conclude, we hope to make a contribution to the following people, agents or organizations, such as the governmental institutes of Aboriginal affairs, the authorities of education, school administrators and teachers, aboriginal associations, aboriginal parents, aboriginal students and the future researchers. The purpose of this study is to explore the opinions of Aboriginal Junior High School Teachers of Taiwan toward the Perquisite Admission Policy and Education Right of Aboriginal High School Students in Taiwan. The study is conducted by two major: literature analysis and questionnaire survey. Through the questionnaire gathered the opinion of aboriginal Junior High School Teachers in Taiwan. The data are analyzed with the statistics methods as Mean and percentage. The results of this study are shown as followings: 1. The Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students carried out by Government certainly ensure the right for Aboriginals to education and lift up the standard of Aboriginal educational level. 2. The Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students carried out by Government raise the enrollment rate of Aboriginal Junior High School Students; however, owing to the lack of school-after programs, the dropout rate is simultaneously high. It achieves little to cultivate the elites of Aboriginals. 3. The Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students doesn’t improve their low-incomes, low socioeconomic status, and race-reliance. 4. The Perquisite Admission Policy for Aboriginal Students in performance forms more controversy vainly, because it provides appropriate perquisite, not depend on the divergence of students’ surroundings. 5. To continue Aboriginal culture Governments carry out Test of Aboriginal Language Skill and Culture Certification; yet it’s just an accordance of perquisite, not truly to promote the Aboriginal Students’ culture education right. To conclude, we hope to make the contribution to improve the Perquisite Admission Policy .

This paper investigates the effects of executive perquisites and CEO ownership concentration as the amount of private information on share prices and as the means to reduce the risk-aversion effect in the place of higher stock price synchronicity for Chinese-listed firms over the period from 2005-2014. In addition, the positive relation of the wealth effect to mutual monitoring is also examined. Based on data for 9,022 CEOs with private benefits (PERK), we find that there is a greater reduction in idiosyncratic volatility (estimated by taking the logit transformation of the R-square statistic) when both mutual monitoring and ownership concentration are present than if only ownership concentration exists. Both stock price synchronicity and executive perquisites are treated as endogenous variables in the simultaneous equations approach. We find that mutual monitoring can constrain potentially self-servicing behavior and substitute for other governance mechanisms in case of concentrated ownership with the inclination to offer perquisites for CEO compensation.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 interrogates the argument that cultural homogeneity is a prerequisite for democratic persistence. The thesis here is that the absence of diverse interests and agreement around cultural norms produces a unified citizenry. This is supported by the view that democracy is harder to sustain in ethnically and religiously diverse societies. The problem is that many small states are ethnically, socially, and linguistically divided and stubbornly democratic. They also tend to operate majoritarian rather than consensual or consociational political institutions. Indeed, in some cases, such as the Melanesian region of the Pacific, it has been argued that hyper-fragmentation actually aides consolidation by ensuring that no group can come to dominate the apparatus of the state. Conversely, many homogenous small states have dominant cultural codes that, when combined with the personalization of politics, stifle pluralism and dissent. So, homogeneity is not a perquisite for democracy any more than economic growth is.

AbstractThe chapter in its first part presents changing understanding of leisure time in the past and currently. Major shifts have occurred in the increasing amount of free time and its democratization. The free time or leisure time is understood only just as a supplement or the rest after work; however, it has its intrinsic value, carries potential of freedom, self-realization, fun and relax. The text deals with leisure time functions and its meaning for individuals and complete family. It highlights issues that are connected with spending of leisure time. In the second part of the chapter, there are results of survey, which was mapping of family spending of free time, its amount and fulfilment. In all the surveyed countries, spending of leisure time has proved to be an important perquisite for family life satisfaction. Activities that are the most likely to be undertaken together with family members are watching TV, walks, trips, visits of friends or relatives, visits of cultural actions and social games.

Most scholars of Lashkar-e-Tayyaba/Jamaat ud Dawah (LeT/JuD) tend to view the tanzeem as a proxy militia for the Pakistani army. While the organization certainly performs this role, this narrow understanding undervalues the full scope of activities it performs, alongside the full range of political and social perquisites that the organization affords the Pakistani state, and thus, the importance that the state attaches to it. Presumably, the formation of the Milli Muslim League (MML) will further entrench this alliance between the state and the LeT/JuD. This chapter demonstrates that LeT/JuD performs a critical role in assisting the deep state to secure its domestic objectives as well as its foreign policies in India and Afghanistan.

Abstract:
While scholars generally posit upward mobility as a secularizing force, for evangelical executives, success in business catalyzes a deeper commitment to faithful living. Fame and fortune do not quench evangelical business leaders’ appetite for spiritual things, but rather activate or intensify such longings. Evangelical executives are deeply committed to exercising positive influence at their companies and beyond. But the executives who do so are those—and only those—who have acquired sufficient discretion and resources to exercise influence without compromising their professional standing or altering their lifestyle. While the deferral of significance is not unique to evangelical executives, their explicit endorsement of the transition from success to significance is important inasmuch as the ability to point to activities of significance that are facilitated by success in business strengthens the case that business is a worthy spiritual calling and legitimates lofty career aspirations, along with the accompanying sacrifices and eventual perquisites.

It deals with the powers of the president, which are set forth in the first sentence of Article I of Section 1 called the “Vesting Clause” or the “Executive Power Clause.” It also mentions the second clause that enumerates two more prerogative powers, which are subjected to the advice and consent of the Senate. The chapter cites the additional presidential power found in Article I of Section 7 that underscores the legislative character of the presidential power. It discusses the Committee of Style and Arrangement that was led by Gouverneur Morris, which sculpted the organization of Article II. It covers Clause 1, Section 2 of Article II that vests the president with the Commander-in-Chief Power, the Opinions in Writing Power, and the Pardon Power.

Abstract:
The article presents a 3D model analysis of a single blade for a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT). The analysis focuses on calculation of the wind pressure on the blade under different wind velocities and directions within the range of −45 deg. to +45 deg. using virtual wind tunnel simulators based on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. Furthermore, the study deals with a linear modal analysis of the loaded blade subjected to aerodynamic loads, dead weight and angular velocity of the rotor. By modeling the blade as a thick shell, composite shell and through solid spatial finite elements (FE), a comparison of the final results regarding the modal characteristics of the blade is discussed. The objective of this comparison is to develop better understanding of the blade performance and find the best ways for computer analysis regarding the complexity of the model, computer resources and accuracy of the results. The authors consider this analysis and the corresponding conclusions as a crucial perquisite for further geometrical optimization of the flap-wise rigidity of the blade aiming reduction of the strain energy and the noise. The results of the study indicate that different solutions are possible to implement in achieving almost equal flap-wise rigidity along the blade.

Abstract:
The ability to manufacture at the micrometric and even nanometric precision is in strong demand today in view of the increasing need to reduce the size of parts and products in many industrial and commercial sectors. For many of these applications, the technology of mechanical solid tool machining offers promising applicability as it can create truly three-dimensional and one-of-a-kind parts of extremely high resolutions without placing significant limitation on the part materials. For mechanical solid tool machining, the control of three-dimensional motions between machines, tools, and parts to sub-micron level of precision is a perquisite to the realization of manufacturing at such fine scales. One important factor that contributes to the machining process accuracy is the overall size of the machine tool due to the effects of thermal, static, and dynamic stabilities. This paper will assess the technological benefits of miniaturization of machine tools in the context of machine stiffness and accuracy. This paper also presents the design and configuration of a 4-axis miniaturized vertical machining center of positioning accuracy of 4 to 10 nm and a machine volumetric envelop less than 0.03m3, which is several hundred times smaller than traditional machining centers. A series of tests are discussed for performance evaluation of the miniaturized machining center in terms of the achievable finish and part form accuracy with respect to the process parameters and part geometrical complexity in 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D cases.

Abstract:
Abstract Improving the reliability of marine renewable energy devices such as wave and tidal energy convertors is an important task, primarily to minimize the perceived risks and reduce the associated cost for operation and maintenance. Marine systems involve a wide range of uncertainties, due to the complexity of failure mechanism of the marine components, scarcity of data, human interactions and randomness of the sea environment. The fundamental element of a probabilistic risk analysis necessarily needs to rely on operational information and observation data to quantify the performance of the system. However, in reality it is difficult to ascertain observation of the precursor data according to the number of component failures that have occurred, mainly as a result of imprecision in the failure criterion, record keeping, or experimental and physical modelling of the process. Traditional reliability estimation approaches such as Fault Tree, Event Tree and Reliability Block Diagram analysis offer simplified, rarely realistic models of this complex reliability problem. The main reason is that they all rely on accurate prior information as a perquisite for performing reliability assessment. In this paper, a hierarchical Bayesian framework is developed for modelling marine renewable component failures encountered the uncertainty. The proposed approach is capable to incorporate the conditions, which lack reliable observation data (e.g. unknown/uncertain failure rate of a component). The hierarchical Bayesian framework provides a platform for the propagation of uncertainties through the reliability assessment of the system, via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. The advantages of using MCMC sampling has proliferated Bayesian inference for conducting risk and reliability assessment of engineering system. It is able to use hyper-priors to represent prior parameters as a subjective observations for probability estimation of the failure events and enable an updating process for quantitative reasoning of interdependence between parameters. The developed framework will be an assistive tool for a better monitoring of the operation in terms of evaluating performance of marine renewable system under the risk of failure. The paper illustrates the approach using a tidal energy convertor as a case study for estimating components failure rates and representing the uncertainties of system reliability. The paper will be of interest to reliability practitioners and researchers, as well as tidal energy technology and project developers, seeking a more accurate reliability estimation framework.

Lea, Richard H. "Development of New International Standards for Composite Piping Systems for the Marine and Offshore Oil and Gas Industries." In ASME 2001 Engineering Technology Conference on Energy. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/etce2001-17037.

Abstract:
Abstract The development of international standards for composite piping systems that are used in the Marine and Offshore Oil & Gas Industries is a recognized customer need. These industries are global in nature. It is not uncommon to see project specifications written in London and Houston, fabrication of the vessel hull in a Korean yard, topsides construction in Indonesia and project location off the coast of West Africa. Operator supplied specifications could come from The Netherlands, France, Norway as well as numerous other countries. In addition, certifying agencies such as ABS, Lloyds or DNV could be involved that must follow international maritime rules and regulations. A concerted effort has been made within the past five years to address these issues. Operators worldwide have come together with composite pipe manufacturers, engineering firms and certifying agencies to develop international standards that address these issues. Anyone considering the use of composite piping in the Marine and/or Offshore Oil & Gas Industries should consider the ASTM and ISO Standards that are in the final stages of development. ASTMF-1173 Rewrite is a purchasing document that is being balloted at the present time. It was developed by ASTM F25.13.03 workgroup. ISO WD 15840 is the international version of ASTM F-1173 Rewrite. It has been circulated to the international community for comments. It was developed by ISO/TC8/SC3/WG4. ISO WD 14692 is a rewrite of original United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) document that was adopted in March 1994. It has been circulated to the international community for comments and is in it’s final stage of development. It was developed by ISO/TC 67/SC 6/WG 5. This document is an engineering specification and recommended practice document. When finalized and passed by the various committees ISO 15840 and ISO 14692 should be used in conjunction with each other. They are compatible documents based on performance criteria. It is the opinion of many who have been in the composite pipe business for over 20 years that these are the most important documents ever developed by our industry. They are grossly overdue. However, while standards are a recognized customer need, standards that are not fully understood by operators, piping engineers and installation teams can be dangerous and misinterpreted. Knowledge of the unique properties of composite materials must be a perquisite to those using these standards. Standards that are not fully understood in the hands of the uneducated is a formula for disaster.
