Abstract:
Researchers have learned much about the cognitive organization of the language system by studying speech errors made by speakers with and without aphasia. Some aspects of errors made in language production reflect linguistic properties of language (e.g., linguistic similarities between an intended word and the word that was produced in error). Other aspects reflect processes that enable production of language (e.g., substitutions or sequencing errors). A particularly intriguing class of error is perseveration, the unintended retrieval of words or sounds after they have been recently produced.

Abstract:
Management of inappropriate behaviour is a major priority in special education. Evidence‐based practice dictates that interventions to reduce inappropriate behaviour should be evaluated at the individual level to demonstrate their efficacy in the classroom. This study illustrates the evaluation of an evidence‐based procedure (response interruption) for reducing perseverative requesting in an adolescent boy with autism and severe intellectual disability. The boy used a speech‐generating device to request snacks during baseline and response interruption conditions. During both conditions, the bo

The metacognitive model (Wells & Matthews, 1994) proposes that metacognitions (e.g., positive or negative beliefs about worry and thoughts) are involved in emotional disorders alongside perseverative thinking, such as worry. In social anxiety, worry about forthcoming social situations, termed anticipatory processing (AP), is considered an important maintaining factor (Clark & Wells, 1995), but a role of metacognition is less clear. This study investigated AP and metacognition in 80 high socially anxious individuals asked to engage in either AP or a filler task before delivering a speec

Abstract:
This study investigated the feasibility of decreasing the stereotypic behavior of two adolescents with autism by teaching them to increase orienting responses to their environment using an external prompt. Both participants exhibited high rates of stereotypic behaviors, one in the form of physical rigidity and stereotyped eye movements, the other in the form of perseverative speech and repeated gesturing. They were taught to increase the amount of appropriate orienting to natural stimuli in community settings. Within a multiple baseline design across settings, both demonstrated decreases in st

Abstract:
<p> This theoretical dissertation approaches chronic stuttering from a new, revolutionary point of view. First, the stuttering problem is defined holistically as Chronic Perseverative Stuttering Syndrome (CPSS) that includes dysfunctional ideation, emoting, behaviors, perceptions, and life choices of the person who stutters. The holistic definition addresses visible or audible speech and non-speech producing muscle anomalies, distortions of speech, avoidance behaviors while speaking, self-defeating attitudes and unhealthy negative emotions, and self-limiting general life choices. Abstract:
Deficits in conversation skills can be one barrier to developing and maintaining relationships for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Individuals with ASD may deter conversation partners if they do not stay on topic or if they dwell on topics. Several interventions have been identified in targeting the reduction of problematic (off-topic or perseverative) speech, and withheld attention for its occurrence. In addition to leveraging attention as a reinforcer, one study provided signaled access to preferred topics contingent on talking about non-perseverative or therapist-selected t
