The Mantiq-Ut-Tayr[1] is a collection of mystical poems composed by Farid ud-Din Attar in 1177 in Iran. He was a doctor, druggist, perfumer, and at the same time a Sufi in his ideas. In 1857, the British poet and translator, Edward FitzGerald, introduced this collection of couplets to England for the first time. As a Victorian translator, he attempted to colonize the Persian text and recreate Attar’s rhythmic pattern in his translation. Abstract Though a signature verse (takhalluṣ) is often found in medieval Persian and Ottoman Turkish poetry, this is less frequently the case in Arabic poetry at this time. However, Muḥammad Ibn al-Shihābī al-Ṣūfī included such a signature verse in 38 Arabic poems, many inspired by recitations of Ibn al-Fāriḍ’s poetry. Robert Bly and Leonard Lewisohn are among the latest translators of Ḥāfiẓ who have selectively translated thirty ghazals of Ḥāfiẓ into English. A close investigation of their translation reveals how they have manipulated the original texts to a great extent which results in having merely a mystical interpretation of Ḥāfiẓ’s multi-layered poems. Abstract:
The main idea is that there are two types of translation: faithful, as close as possible to the requirements of the original, and free, interpretable, with an increased dose of subjectivity. The thesis is illustrated based on some translations in which this typology is foreshadowed. Translations from Chinese and Italian poetry were used. In the case of the first translations, many more English translations were used than those made in Romanian.
