As a legacy of intellectual works in Malay and Persian literature Taj al-Salatin and Siyasatname are two major works full of wisdom and courtesy reviews. Two books are equally written by the king's closest people and also presented to the King for the sake of achieving a harmonious life between the King and the people. Siyasatname was written by Nizam al Mulk (1018-109 AD) and presented to the king Alp Arselan and Malik Shah (1072-1092 AD) two kings of the Seljuq dynasty, while Taj al-Salatin was written by Bukhari al Jauhari in Aceh (1603 AD) and presented to Sultan Alauddin Riayyat Syah (1589-1603 AD). In the Persian literature the Siyasatname Book got a very important position because this book became a reference for how the King and his aides should manage and manage the kingdom. Likewise with Taj al-Salatin this book reminds the head of government in this case the king and his aides how to become the ideal official figure. Abstract:
Psychiatry has a long past but a short history in Iran. References to causes and treatment of mental disorders can be found in parts of the Avesta, the holy book of pre-Islamic Iranians. Early muslim physicians like Tabari, Majusi, Razi and Ibn Sina, who were mostly born and brought up in Iran, have devoted long sections of their books to a discussion of mental disorders under the general title of ‘the diseases of the head and the brain’. In fact, the oldest medical textbook in modern Persian—which was completed around 970 A.D.—was written by a practising physician who claims to have been known as a ‘doctor of the insane’ by his contemporaries.

Abstract:
Of all the leading personalities who left their imprint on the history of the Peloponnesian war Tissaphernes was to Thucydides the most enigmatic. Although judgements on the ability and character of individuals occur more frequently in the eighth book of the History than in other parts, Thucydides apparently did not feel himself to be in a position to include an explicit judgement on Tissaphernes. Nor does Tissaphernes, unlike many major and minor characters, receive even a brief descriptive introduction, though such introductions are also exceptionally plentiful in the eighth book. Thucydides has been successful in collecting an abundance of detailed information about the part played by Tissaphernes in the opening phase of the Ionian war and yet has failed to produce a satisfactory picture of him. In this paper attention will first be drawn to special problems arising in the case of Tissaphernes which do not arise in the presentation of other leading characters. My main purpose, however, is to attempt to establish that the account of him by Thucydides is basically inconsistent and that this inconsistency occurs because the material in the eighth book has not been fully integrated. One source of difficulty for Thucydides in writing about Tissaphernes was that he seems to have had little opportunity to acquire knowledge of Persia and the Persians. There is no indication that he spent any part of his exile in or near Asia, and the notorious sparsity of his references to Greek relations with the Persians before the outbreak of the Ionian war suggests that his contacts with them were scanty. In this respect he was not exceptional. Before the end of the fifth century even the best educated Athenians seem to have possessed only a dim or distorted impression of Persia, as is illustrated in different ways by the Persae and the Acharnians.

He authored books on many Islamic topics, including the Qur'an, tafseer, seerat, hadith, jurisprudence, rules, and beliefs. The number of books is estimated by some researchers to be 300 and some to be higher than 150. Al-Wasiyat-ul-Hashimia also counts in his publications. The thesis writer has commented on this book by Hazrat Thatvi in his thesis and it has been tried to write the style with full research which Hazrat Thattavi has adopted in this book which is a knowledge benefit as well as a scholarly work. The writer has summarized the thesis in the beginning, and then does some work on the biography of Hazrat Thattavi, and later writes under the title of study of the book the style which Hazrat Thattavi has adopted in this book, and tried to prove through his research that the style of writing of Hazrat Thattavi was very unique, and as a writer he has chosen very good words, but the style is such that every man can easily understand his text. Some of the texts as a sample are mentioned in this thesis, then Ideas and subordinates of Hazrat are written under the title of the Theology Analysis, and also discussed the words and phrases, and finally the researcher has edited the result which he reached after his research efforts as well as discussed the margins and the source and references separately.

Abstract:
Vindicating the mission of the Persian reformer known as the Báb (d. 1850) Bahá’u’lláh’s Book of Certitude (1862) focused on spiritual authority from an Islamic perspective. In this work, a subtext may be discerned, in which Bahá’u’lláh intimates his own mission in the same terms of reference. Later, in his epistles to the monarchs of Europe and West Asia (1866–1869), Bahá’u’lláh exercised that authority and spoke of world reform. This article places Bahá’u’lláh in the context of Islamic reform, with particular reference to the advocacy of constitutional democracy by prominent Iranian secularists. In an ideological ether pervaded by “Westoxication,” Bahá’u’lláh sought to reverse the direction of Western influence. Bahá’u’lláh prosecuted his own reforms in three stages: Bábí reform; Persian reform; and world reform. In the centrifugal sequence, Bahá’u’lláh is shown to have bypassed Islamic reform altogether in his professed role as “World Reformer.”

Abstract The analysis of several extant manuscripts of the Šāhnāma epics and other Persian literary texts produced by two calligraphers, Ādīna Kātib Buḫārī (fl. 1595-1605) and Mīr Māh b. Mīr ʿArab (fl. 1592-1613), seemingly in the same atelier in Samarkand, opens up an interesting field of investigation. The latter copyist was a close relation of a renowned court calligrapher and Chief Librarian of the Shaybanid rulers of Bukhara, Mīr Ḥusayn “Kulangī” (fl. ca. 1535-85) who himself also specialized in the copy of Persian classical literature; more then 30 manuscripts by his hand are extant today. This article presents the available information on professional biographies of these calligraphers (introducing some hithertho unknown manuscripts), but also it touches upon the issues of the actual organization and practices of skill transmission and book production, some aspects of professional specialization, and the importance of transmission reference figure in professional and family contexts of the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Central Asia.

Abstract:
Abstract The Risāla dar tafṣīl-i sākhtan-i chīnī (A Treatise on Porcelain Manufacture) is a Qajar-period manuscript in Persian, housed at the Sipahsalar Library in Tehran. It is the only known source that details the modern technology of porcelain production in the Qajar era (1789–1925). According to the information in the colophon, the scribe, Masih ibn Muhammad Baqir al-Firuzabadi, completed the manuscript in the year 1284 (1868). The text mentions that it is the translation of a French work, but no further reference to the original book is given. The purpose of this essay is to introduce and review the Persian manuscript, to reveal its relation to the three-volume Traité des arts céramiques ou des poteries (Treatise on Ceramic Arts or Potteries) by Alexandre Brongniart, a nineteenth-century scientist and director of the Sèvres Porcelain Factory, and to underline its importance to the history of art and technology in Qajar Iran.

What is alloglottography? A diaeresis? A digamma? Whose writing system has kanamajiri writing and kokuji? How would you start to find any of these in a conventional writing system text/reference, unless you knew where (in the world) to start? What about opisthograph, ostracon, quoc-ngu, and tugra? None are in the index of Daniels & Bright 1996, which I consider the best book to date on the world's writing systems. But all are entries, cross-referenced to other entries, in Coulmas's Encyclopedia. The reader can also look up Bamum writing, Djuka syllabic writing, the Hatrene script, Hsi-hsia writing, the Loma syllabary, Peguan script, Tifinagh, Urartian writing, and the Wolof alphabet directly, without having first to know what set of writing systems, geographical or typological, they belong to. My personal favorite is Sogdian writing (471–74), an Aramaic-derived script used by Persian colonists in Chinese Turkestan; the cursive form of this writing system is attributed to Ahriman the devil, because it is so hard to distinguish the letters. What a pleasant surprise, for one satiated with discussions of the weaknesses and unnecessary complexities of Japanese writing!

Abstract:
Context: Persian Medicine (PM) scientists such as Avicenna (980‑1037 AD) believed that maintaining health without exercise is impossible. So they have written about special rules and various techniques for the exercise of different groups of people including children. This study aimed to express the PM views about the exercise in children. Evidence Acquisition: Among the most important references of PM in children’s subjects, six books from different centuries were selected. Relevant keywords were used to extract related data. Also, PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases were searched up to July 2019 to find common views on physical activity and exercise in children. The extracted materials were thoroughly studied to summarize and categorize to find the main themes. Results: According to PM, exercise is a broad concept, including massage of the upper and lower limbs from the first hours of life, physical activity like crying for feeding and playing, passive movements such as cradle shaking and swinging, and proper and frequent experience of mental states and five senses such as winning/losing, enjoying, listening to music and looking at fine writings. The intensity of exercise varies in different children. Vigorous exercise in children changes the body composition, results in weakness, or impairs the growth and development. So, according to Avicenna, exercise must be planned individually. Conclusions: It seems that the principles of PM can help design available, different, enjoyable, and user-friendly exercises for children of all ages.

Abstract:
Beyond the Doctrine of Man responds to the question of how individuals and communities can live and have lived beyond the way the human person is defined in colonial modernity. This volume brings together essays that interrogate the problem of modern/colonial definitions of the human person and that take up the struggle to decolonize these descriptive statements. As the problem of coloniality transcends disciplinary constructions, so do the contributions in this book. They engage work from various fields, including ethnic studies, religious studies, theology, queer theory, philosophy, and literary studies. The essays in Beyond the Doctrine of Man were catalyzed by Sylvia Wynter’s questioning of modern/colonial descriptions of the human person. Wynter asks this question within a larger project of unsettling and countering these definitions. Contributors to this collection follow in this move—sometimes in direct reference to Wynter’s work and sometimes primarily focusing on the work of others—of asking how Western modernity has naturalized itself through a discourse on the human. This analytical work taken up by contributors is at the service of unsettling and countering this naturalization.

Abstract:
This book comprehensively covers empirically supported exposure methods (e.g., in vivo exposure, imaginal exposure, and interoceptive exposure) to a broad array of mental health symptoms. This transdiagnostic approach emphasizes the importance of a person-centered application, putting case formulation at the center of intervention planning and implementation. Unlike a rigid manualized method, this book provides clinicians with a framework allowing for a more flexible delivery of exposure therapy. The book begins with an introduction to the aims and guiding principles of person-centered exposure therapy (Chapter s1 and 2), an overview of the general approach (Chapter 3), and an overview of assessment strategies (Chapters 4 and 9). Next, the authors discuss specific modifications for treating fears of (a) emotions and related physical sensations (Chapter 5), (b) people (Chapter 6), and (c) thoughts, images, and trauma memories (Chapter 7). This book also discusses combined medication and exposure therapy and ways to effectively manage common pitfalls (Chapter 8). Chapter 10 includes an exposure psychoeducation handout for clinicians to read and give to patients during early sessions. Finally, Chapter 11 is a bibliography of key references and further resources for clinicians.

Abstract:
This book analyzes, from diverse but convergent historical and theoretical visions, the central problems of the anthropological structure of the person in relation to freedom - as the center of personal dignity - and with the possibilities and limits of free action and its conditionings. The text highlights the tension between rationality and responsibility when studying freedom from different perspectives, and as a decision of the person who responsibly practice it to the other people, from the will, experience and intersubjectivity. By the hands of authors, from Aristotle to contemporary anthropology, who are essential references, the text clarifies the origin of the choices in which freedom is expressed and allows deepening its understanding as an idea and as a content, from the complexity and conflict. The work studies fundamental aspects of the person-freedom relationship from ethics, psychology, politics, metaphysics and theology, and highlights the value of purpose, autonomy and community environments in which freedom is realized, keeping in mind an integrative anthropological approach. Finally, the argument about the centrality of the person is especially valuable in times of visions that minimize the human to consumption, production or ideology. The conclusions of this volume revalue the foundation and the possibility of free action that makes the being human responsible and committed.

Abstract:
This book places Biruni in his historical and cultural context within the long-term history of medieval Eurasia. It outlines the course of Biruni’s life, clarifying key questions about his associations, travels, and patrons. Following an overview of Biruni’s chief interests, it details his major works to illustrate the breadth of Biruni’s output and his intellectual approach, especially his attention to language, esteem for knowledge, and commitment to objective truth. An account of his institutional context and relationships elucidates his friendships and rivalries, notably with Avicenna. The book also shows how varied paths of transmission affected the legacy of Biruni and its reception in global scientific and literary traditions. Finally, a timeline, list of key works, and detailed bibliographic essay will guide readers into further study of Biruni and his thought. This comprehensive overview of Biruni is based on the Arabic and Persian primary sources in the original languages using the best editions. The author has consulted scholarship in French, German, and Russian to draw conclusions and present up-to-date bibliographic references in a manner accessible to specialists and the general reader alike.

Abstract:
Winner in the Scholarly Reference section of the 2004 Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing.
Introduced Mammals of the World provides a concise and extensive source of information on the range of introductions of mammals conducted by humans, and an indication as to which have resulted in adverse outcomes. It provides a very valuable tool by which scientists can assess future potential introductions (or re-introductions) to avoid costly mistakes. It also provides tangible proof of the need for political decision makers to consider good advice and make wise and cautious decisions. Introduced Mammals of the World also provides a comprehensive reference to students of ecological systems management and biological conservation.
This book is a companion volume to Introduced Birds of the World, by the same author, published in 1981, and which remains the premier text of its kind in the world more than twenty years after it was published. Introduced Mammals of the World provides the most comprehensive account of the movement of mammals around the world providing details on the date(s) of introduction, the person/agency responsible, the source populations, the location(s) of release, the fate of the introductions, and the impact if known, for over 300 species of mammal.

Shams, Fatemeh. "Rethinking the Islamic Republican Canon." In A Revolution in Rhyme. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198858829.003.0002.

Abstract:
The opening chapter tackles the problematic aspects of literary canonization, with specific reference to the complex process of literary de-canonization and re-canonization in the wake of 1979 revolution. It introduces, for the first time, the work and lives of two generations of poets who belong to the Islamic Republic’s canon of poetry, their approach to, and relationship with, the Persian poetic tradition. The reader thus begins the book grounded in the foundations of a poetic trend in modern Iran that was sponsored and promoted by the establishment following the 1979 revolution. While introducing the ‘key figures’ of the Islamic Republic’s official canon of poetry, the chapter throws light on the complex and multilayered process of reshaping the pre-revolutionary poetry canon in years preceding and following the 1979 revolution

WHY DOES ISLAM appear to persist as a powerful reference point for so many believers? This is the question of this book. Like any other question, an answer makes sense only to the extent that we clearly understand what is being asked. I wish to explore how an Islamic perspective on common affairs, among other perspectives, takes shape and becomes established in public life. In charting out this process, I will focus only on the sociological aspects of Islam, being aware that this focus leaves out vast areas of religious life—including the nature of belief, theological reason, and juridical debates. I will, however, address these areas whenever they have some bearing on the sociology of the faith....

Maurice O’Neill’s arrival sends the investigation into the black community after Minor’s “strange negro” reference. Local blacks are rounded up and the name Lawrence Williams emerges. Separately, a black man is shot and killed in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His name is George Pearls and the police chief in Pine Bluff thought he might be the person to have killed Merrill. Book Roberts initially disregards the call. The investigation continues until someone tips Roberts off that a man named Williams was staying with Emily Burns and her mother Nellie Black. Deputies go to their home, find Williams trunk, and discover papers with the name George Pearls. Pearls/Williams are the same person. Emily is arrested alongside her mother. Emily is browbeaten and threatened with being whipped before she offers a “confession.” She remained in jail without an attorney. Abstract:
This chapter discusses Black Seasons. This book is a compelling first-person narrative about how a Jewish boy who turned five years old in 1939 survived the Nazi occupation of Poland during the Second World War. The boy, Michał Głowiński (hereafter G), went on to become one of Poland's leading literary scholars and is currently a professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute of Literary Studies in Warsaw. Black Seasons often comes across as a drama driven by the powerful and ubiquitous tension facing G between life and death (życie i śmierć). There is constant reference to his vulnerability. Death could strike not only in a small bakery on the street, but at the hands of a neatly turned-out man who shows up at the apartment door without cause or warning. And yet the book hardly shows anyone actually dying. And G himself manages, of course, to elude his pursuer time and time again.

Abstract:
In Jean Rhys’s fiction, advertisements, songs, books, and voices of others impinge upon the interior monologues of her characters. In particular, the popular songs that are integrated into Rhys’s first-person novels enhance the auditory nature of her interior monologues. Yet, while the songs referenced in Voyage in the Dark (1934) and Good Morning, Midnight (1939) sometimes foster automatic responses and clichéd understandings for her narrators, they can also instill a sense of defiance and comfort, making music one of the few channels for a momentary sense of fulfillment and expression. By surveying Rhys’s depiction of popular gramophone recordings and their Bohemian associations in her short stories, this chapter reveals how Rhys crafts and commodifies a bohemian voice in her novels, which sounds out the dialectical relationship between a middle-class public with an appetite for lurid tales of the underbelly of society and so-called bohemians, who pushed the boundaries of individuality and freedom.

Hordern, Joshua. "Compassion and Responsibility." In Compassion in Healthcare. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198790860.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores how responsibility, fault, and desert matter for the content of compassion with particular reference to the idea of rationing by fault, shared decision-making, and recent UK law regarding the relationship between responsibility, risk, and consent. Conceptual clarity is sought through exploring how tragedy differs from Christian theology by deploying the contrasting categories of the ‘undeserving sick’, the ‘obstinate sick’ and the ‘sad sick’, as applied to clinical communication, pastoral discretion, and mercy. The chapter considers what may be learnt for the interrelation of responsibility with compassion from the Book of Job. This analysis deepens the earlier account of second-person relatedness and compassion, by considering the category of ‘remonstration’. This is then applied to practice through a discussion of the constraints on certain forms of public and preventive healthcare. The chapter concludes by drawing on ecclesiological motifs to describe how compassionate relationships can persevere over time.

Lovatt, Helen. "Metalepsis, Grief, and Narrative in Aeneid 2." In Metalepsis. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198846987.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates the emotional function of metalepsis by considering the case of Virgil, Aeneid 2, a book which combines intense emotion with great narrative complexity. Analysing multiple metaleptic features in the book, it offers a model for reading emotional intensity in terms of immersion and alienation, and concludes that metalepsis may paradoxically both alienate readers and intensify their emotional engagement. The chapter begins by exploring the layered first-person narratives produced by Aeneas and Sinon, both of whom use their grief to establish authority and create a positive reception. It argues that the constant interplay between the levels of the external narrator and these two internal ones creates dissonances for readers, but ultimately intensifies the emotional response of the various levels of audience, both internal (Dido) and external. The chapter then demonstrates that moments of narrative transition are often characterized both by emotional intensity and by lack of narrative realism, opening up the potential for metalepsis by means such as anachronism and simile. A study of the deaths of Polites and Priam shows how puns, intertextual references, and connections to the contemporary world of author and audience can all serve to enhance immediacy even when one might expect them to create distance. Finally, the chapter asks in what sense one can really say with Genette that Virgil ‘has Dido die’, making the case that the death of Dido, too, is a metaleptic moment with paradoxical emotional effects.

Abstract:
The present paper offers that most of the advocates of discipline of library and information science believe that there is a lack of theoretical foundation and rational identity. The author maintains that there has been an error in defining the subject by confusing library with librarianship. That is many researchers have derived the concept of librarianship from library. Therefore they came to define librarianship as an entity only through the social application and services. If instead, a librarian was assumed to be a person who was usually a scholar, with or without the knowledge of classification properly, and if it was further assumed that before establishing any library, at least there has always been one thoughtful person with the enthusiasm of classifying his own tacit or explicit knowledge in order to retrieve, the concept of librarianship could have been derived from the concept of personal seeking of knowledge, or the need of any knowledgeable person who believes in scientific classification for the sake of retrieval. Thus, there has always been the necessity for scientific classification even if there has not been any formal library. So, I propose that librarianship is more related to the knowledge retrieval and classification which is in the mind of all people specially scholars and learned men before the library, as a place for the collection of books and other materials come to being.
