Abstract:
An individual's personal network — their set of social contacts — is a basic object of study in sociology. Studies of personal networks have focused on their size (the number of contacts) and their composition (in terms of categories such as kin and co-workers). Here we propose a new measure for the analysis of personal networks, based on the way in which an individual divides his or her attention across contacts. This allows us to contrast people who focus a large fraction of their interactions on a small set of close friends with people who disperse their attention more widely. Using data from Facebook, we find that this balance of attention is a relatively stable property of an individual over time, and that it displays interesting variation across both different groups of people and different modes of interaction. In particular, activities based on communication involve a much higher focus of attention than activities based simply on observation, and these two types of modalities also exhibit different forms of variation in interaction patterns both within and across groups. Finally, we contrast the amount of attention paid by individuals to their most frequent contacts with the rate of change in the identities of these contacts, providing a measure of churn for this set.

Abstract:
College instructors desiring classrooms free from learning distractions often enforce personal-technology-use policies to create what they think is an optimal learning environment, but students tend not to favor restrictive personal technology policies. Which type of personal technology classroom environment maximizes student satisfaction, learning, and attention? We surveyed 280 business communications students in two types of classrooms: a personal technology-restricted environment and a free-use environment. We evaluated student perceptions of cognitive learning, sustained attention, and satisfaction with the course as well as the technology policy governing their classrooms. Students believed they achieved greater cognitive learning in non-restricted personal technology classrooms and perceived no significant difference in sustained attention. Although students may be more satisfied with a free personal-technology-use policy in the classroom, overall satisfaction with the course did not significantly differ according to the classroom environment. We discuss the importance of sustained attention and policy satisfaction for enhancing student course satisfaction in classrooms with both technology policy types.

Abstract:
IntroductionAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent chronic neuropsychiatric disorders in children and adolescents; however, it continues into adulthood in 4-77% of the cases. Due to executive dysfunction, adults with ADHD may have deficits in personal strengths, as well as difficulties utilizing existing strengths in challenging situations, which may add to the functional impairments associated with ADHD in adults.ObjectivesTherefore, we aimed to explore the association between personal strengths and ADHD symptoms in a community sample of adults.MethodsFive hundred and twenty-eight adults (mean age = 21.41 years, SD = 2.29, range: 18 ̶ 28, female: N = 488, 92.4%) filled out an online questionnaire after giving their informed consent. Personal strengths were assessed using Bernstein’s Strengths Scale (BSS) which measures sixteen positive attributes grouped into four higher-order factors: self-directedness (Identity, Self-reflection, Self-confidence, Self-assertion, Imagination/Creativity), self-regulation (Emotional balance, Resilience, Self-control, Self-care, Reality testing), connection (Empathy, Compassion, Humour, Responsibility), and transcendence (Gratitude and Wisdom). ADHD symptoms were measured by the screening version (Part A) of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS).ResultsParticipants who were screened positive in ASRS (N = 247, 46.7%) scored lower in all but four BSS subscales than participants who were screened negative (N = 280, 53.3%). Effect sizes reached the medium level (Cohen’s d > .5) for Self-confidence, Self-care, Responsibility and Wisdom, and were small (Cohen’s d > .2) for Identity, Self-assertion, Imagination, Resilience, Reality-testing, Emotional balance, and Gratitude. However, no group differences were found in the Self-reflection, Empathy, Compassion, and Humour subscales of the BSS.ConclusionsOur results suggest that ADHD symptoms in adults may be associated with deficits in personal strengths; that is, adults with ADHD may have difficulties, especially in trusting in their abilities, qualities, and judgements, in taking care of their own emotional and physical well-being, in taking responsibilities and in being open to learning from their experiences. Addressing personal strengths in psychosocial interventions for adult ADHD may improve patients’ functioning. This research has been supported by the National Research, Development, and Innovation Office, OTKA-PD-134849 and ÚNKP-22-2-I-ELTE-854 grants.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

Full text
Abstract:
Session-based recommendations aim to predict a user’s next click based on the user’s current and historical sessions, which can be applied to shopping websites and APPs. Existing session-based recommendation methods cannot accurately capture the complex transitions between items. In addition, some approaches compress sessions into a fixed representation vector without taking into account the user’s interest preferences at the current moment, thus limiting the accuracy of recommendations. Considering the diversity of items and users’ interests, a personalized interest attention graph neural network (PIA-GNN) is proposed for session-based recommendation. This approach utilizes personalized graph convolutional networks (PGNN) to capture complex transitions between items, invoking an interest-aware mechanism to activate users’ interest in different items adaptively. In addition, a self-attention layer is used to capture long-term dependencies between items when capturing users’ long-term preferences. In this paper, the cross-entropy loss is used as the objective function to train our model. We conduct rich experiments on two real datasets, and the results show that PIA-GNN outperforms existing personalized session-aware recommendation methods.

Abstract:
Attention, as sustained thoughtful focus, differs from distraction solely in view of the deliberated object’s social value. Social risks and contradictions, typically regarded as a collective concern, have colonised privacy through processes of individualization and are nowadays considered exclusively from individual’s positions – attention aimed inwards as an outside distraction. Coincidentally, in this era of “the attention/distraction economy,” what we socially evaluate as distraction is extremely profitable for perpetuating the system and respective capital. Individual(‘s) guilt while serving the aforementioned purpose, reinforces the perception of individual responsibility and steers the(ir) focus towards strengthening personal discipline and continuously upgrading one’s biography. However, if disruption, which steers our thoughts towards the collective or outward, does exist, I’d call it art.

Abstract:
Somatic autoethnography integrates a materialist perspective that positions a dance ethnographer’s personal history--ethnicity, race, class or national origin—with modes of attention that highlight the impact of perception. From a contemporary neuro-science perspective somatic autoethnography can be articulated as an embodied form of research in which an act of mimesis in learning a dance form in a specific cultural context engages the neuro structures of the ethnographer to evolve new states of embodied cognition and an integration of perception, context/place, memory and imagination. In phenomenological terms, ethnographers transform their experience of their ‘lived-body’ through an intensive engagement in which the body of the performer through imitation becomes the object of the learner’s subjective identity. This project considers this topic from a historically contextual perspective of the author’s personal experience across three dance forms and cultural locations—Middle Eastern Raqs el Sharqi, dance among the Azande of South Sudan, and Japanese Nihon Buyo.

ABSTRACT This article investigates drawing as a form of devotional attention. Engaging with the work of María Lugones and examples from Josef Albers, Corita Kent, Franz Opalka, Georgia O’Keeffe, and William Kentridge, each section revolves around drawing in relation to embodied practices of being together with others. In addition to a personal account of memories and rituals of drawings, this article examines the degree to which drawing hones a pragmatic sense for fallibility, fluidity, and open-ended research, while arguing for drawing as a form of commitment to community that challenges historical associations of creativity with individualistic or uninhibited freedom.

Abstract:
Attention is a complex process that modulates perception in various ways. Phenomenological philosophy provides an array of concepts for describing the rich structures of attention, thereby avoiding reductions to singular aspects of an experiential spectrum. By suggesting various modes and levels of attentional experience, we intend to do some justice to its complexity, taking into account sub-personal and personal factors on the side of subjective (noetic) horizons and feature-oriented as well as context-oriented aspects on the side of objective (noematic) horizons.

The application of mobile technologies for health monitoring has garnered great attention during the last years. The sensors together with a mobile device form a personal area network that monitors the patient’s health status. It gives advice to the patient, adjusts the environmental conditions according to the patient’s needs, and in the case of an emergency, notifies the patient’s doctor or the corresponding medical center. In the current work the authors present a new attention-based architecture for health monitoring emphasizing on the identification of attention seeking and dangerous health states. The experimental results indicate that the proposed architecture responses very fast to the changes of the patient’s biosignals and accurately in decisions concerning the patient’s health status.

Theses/purpose of the article – The main purpose of the article is to present the selection of personal life documents in personal bibliographies, published in Poland until 1985. Research methods – The method of analysis and criticism of personal bibliographies was used, paying attention to the selection of material, in particular the registration of personal life documents. Results and conclusions – The research undertaken shows that personal bibliographies published prior to 1985 include various types of personal life documents, but only a small part of them do so. The vast majority of the analyzed material omit such documents, although they are an extremely important source of information in scientific research, particularly useful to other fields, for example biographical studies. Personal bibliographies should record personal life documents to a much greater extent, not only those published but also in manuscripts and in the form of iconographic, audio and film documents.

Abstract:
Celebrities in the entertainment industry frequently engage in impression management, a practice driven by the commodification of their personas. This study explores Doja Cat’s music video Attention, examining how she balances impression management with expressions of personal agency as a celebrity. Employing Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis and Erving Goffman’s impression management theory, the study analyzes the visual signs embedded in the music video. The findings reveal that Doja Cat strategically performs impression management to align with stakeholder expectations, ensuring her continued marketability and perceived value within the entertainment industry. However, she also challenges these expectations by introducing symbols of agency, asserting her individuality and creative autonomy. This dual approach reflects the complexities of navigating societal pressures and personal expression in celebrity culture. Future studies could extend this analysis by examining Attention through a gender studies lens, focusing on themes such as female objectification and exploitation within the broader context of celebrity culture and the entertainment industry.

Abstract:
Given the prevalence of public use of devices to send private messages, these messages are prone to be snooped upon by others. Advances in technology have raised privacy concerns, however, little is known about what is typically sought after and the characteristics of those more likely to snoop. People are socially curious and drawn to gossip, suggesting that personal information that is dramatic or salacious may be more tempting for individuals to access when given the opportunity. In addition, certain personality characteristics relate to negative behaviors online, however, it is unknown what individual differences are related to snooping behaviors. Therefore, we designed novel studies in which participants watched videos where pop-up text message notifications, supposedly for the researcher, appeared. Using eye-tracking, we assessed what factors led to fixation on these fake texts. Results showed participants were more likely to fixate on gossipy texts during passive videos (Z = 303.50, p = .01, d = 0.48), and higher conscientiousness was related to lower snooping, r(26) = –.50, p = .01, 95% CI [–.78, –.22]. Further, individual fear of missing out predicted higher fixation only of gossipy texts, r(22) = .55, p = .01, 95% CI [.15, .79], but independent of text type, greater fixation to texts led to divided attention and poorer memory of video content, r(46) = –.50, p < .001, 95% CI [–.73, –.33]. Together, data suggest that there are costs to private information being made public, both to the individual whose information is on display and the snooper.

“Today I met my role model,” tweeted climate change activist Greta Thunberg on 25 February 2020, captioning a picture of herself with girls’ education activist Malala Yousafzai, who also tweeted the picture, proclaiming that Greta was “the only friend I would skip school for.” The proclamations of mutual admiration illustrate a form of solidarity between the two most famous girl activists, who are often pointed to as examples of the power of the individual girl activist in spite of their intentionally collective approaches that connect young activists and civil society organizations around the world. These girl activists have garnered worldwide attention for their causes but have also been subject to problematic media representations that elevate voices of privilege and/or focus on girl activists as exceptional individuals (Gordon and Taft 2010; Hesford 2014), often obscuring the movements behind them. For this reason, this special issue explores activism networks by, for, and with girls and young women, examining and emphasizing girls’ activism in collective and collaborative spaces.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the practical aspects of personal finance management in the context of the transition to digital transformation of the economy. The need to pay attention to this aspect is due to both new opportunities for managing personal finances based on digitalization tools, and the risks of unauthorized access to them using cybernetic means. Summarizing the main sources of threats to personal finance in the context of digitalization is aimed at preventing fraudulent activities and ensuring the protection of financial information carriers. First of all, in a preventive manner, it is proposed to consider the basic problems of personal finance management from the position of accounting and planning of financial resources. The research results are aimed at increasing the financial literacy of the population, preventing encroachments and crimes in the field of personal finance, and, ultimately, at the maximum satisfaction of personal needs. Particular attention is paid to the rules of "personal financial hygiene", which imply organizational and technical measures to protect bank cards, mobile bank, deposits, cash, etc. You should also pay attention to the need to protect personal financial interests from the point of view of checking "financial contacts". An important role in the management of personal finances is played by knowledge of the norms of tax legislation in terms of deductions and benefits for taxes paid by individuals. In this regard, it is necessary to understand not only the legal aspects, but also the capabilities of the information system of relations between taxpayers and the state. It is also proposed to assess the risks of investments for individuals in the context of justifying the individual choice of an option when planning personal finances. All of these aspects are regarded as due diligence rules.

Abstract:
Errors in interaction with digital devices are typically blamed on human factors such as poor attention. However, the influence of attention upon the quality of human-device interaction is commonly overlooked in product design. Developers rely on feedback through user centred design, but do developers, typically younger adults, understand what an older user means, or experiences, in terms of “attention” and appreciate that fundamental conceptual and experiential differences may exist? The authors examine differences between older and younger adults' concepts of attention in relation to mobile-device use to inform future development. Two participant groups consisted of 11 younger adults (18-30 years) and 12 older adults (65+ years). Qualitative analyses revealed three themes ‘personal understanding of attention', ‘attention is dependent on...', and ‘impact of ageing'.

Abstract:
AbstractSocial constructivist approaches to style have moved away from the cognitive asymmetry that underpinned Labov's original attention-to-speech model, namely that a first-learned vernacular often has cognitive primacy. This study explores the interplay of cognitive and interactional effects in style variation. It reports on three related dynamics of style variation in one individual—Fareed Zakaria, an Indian-American media personality. First, we see Zakaria's robust English bidialectalism with American and Indian audiences. This strong audience effect is complicated by the second finding, which points to asymmetric style dominance in Zakaria's first-learned Indian style, which he subtly defaults to regardless of audience when his attention is diverted by such tasks as quickly counter-arguing or inserting parenthetical information. The third part of the study relates style dominance to agency: In a reflexive intra-personal process of biographical indexicality, speakers such as Zakaria may exploit their personal style biography and use their dominant variety to perform no-nonsense ‘real me’ stances in interaction. Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to present relations between sociopsychological phenomena and the subjective perception of personal security. The influence of interpersonal relationships, social cohesion and social support are examined in the article. Special attention is paid to trust as a condition for social integration and good relationships, supporting the experience of personal security. Relations and dependencies between personal dispositions and social environment influences are presented. Generally, the article supports the idea that personal security is a subjective experience, which depends not only on individual characteristics, but also on the character of social influences.

Abstract:
A president’s most precious commodity is time, and nowhere is this scarcity more apparent than with respect to international travel. Personal presidential involvement in diplomatic relations has proven to yield significant benefits, and yet traveling to engage in face-to-face diplomacy is often prohibitively expensive for American executives in time and attention. Given such restrictions, when and where do presidents choose to travel? We use a data set of more than 750 presidential trips spanning more than one hundred countries and a century of history to investigate the domestic and international factors influencing when, where, and for what reason presidents are likely to travel abroad. We provide a detailed examination of presidential travel over time and find that domestic political contexts influence presidential propensities to travel consistent with expectations based on allocating time and attention as limited resources.

Abstract:
The relevance of the topic discussed in the article is determined by the need in modern psychological practice to turn to a deep understanding of the meaning of critical states as “transition points” in the development of individuality. The principles of dialectics in the context of personality development are analyzed. When considering dialectical laws, a parallel is drawn with examples of personality development known in various theories. Attention is paid to crisis periods of development as the key moments in changing the psychological organization of a person. The complexity of psychological work with critical conditions is described both on the part of the client (i.e. resistance to the new), and on the part of the consultant (i.e. fear of destruction). The importance of knowledge of the dialectics principles in the work of a psychologist with people experiencing a crisis is emphasized. A special attention is paid to the principle of negation of negation. The emergence of new stages in the development of individuality is determined precisely by this principle. At the same time, all three laws of dialectics are considered as different facets of the creative process.

Abstract:
The fashion industry has a critical need for fashion compatibility. Modeling compatibility is a challenging task that involves extracting (in)compatible features of pairs, obtaining compatible relationships between matching items, and applying them to personalized recommendation tasks. Measuring compatibility is a complex and subjective concept in general. The complexity is reflected in the fact that relationships between fashion items are determined by multiple matching rules, such as color, shape, and material. Each personal aesthetic style and fashion preference differs, adding subjectivity to the compatibility concept. As a result, personalized factors must be considered. Previous works mainly utilize a convolutional neural network to measure compatibility by extracting general features, but they ignore fine-grained compatibility features and only model overall compatibility. We propose a novel neural network framework called the Attention-based Personalized Compatibility Embedding Network (PCE-Net). It comprises two components: attention-based compatibility embedding modeling and attention-based personal preference modeling. In the second part, we utilize matrix factorization and content-based features to obtain user preferences. Both pieces are jointly trained using the BPR framework in an end-to-end method. Extensive experiments on the IQON3000 dataset demonstrate that PCE-Net significantly outperforms most baseline methods.

Abstract:
Individuals with health anomalies often share their experiences on social media sites, such as Twitter, which yields an abundance of data on a global scale. Nowadays, social media data constitutes a leading source to build drug monitoring and surveillance systems. However, a proper assessment of such data requires discarding mentions which do not express drug-related personal health experiences. We automate this process by introducing a novel deep learning model. The model includes character-level and word-level embeddings, embedding-level attention, convolu- tional neural networks (CNN), bidirectional gated recurrent units (BiGRU), and context-aware attentions. An embedding for a word is produced by integrating both word-level and character-level embeddings using an embedding-level attention mechanism, which selects the salient features from both embeddings without expanding dimensionality. The resultant embedding is further analyzed by three CNN layers independently, where each extracts unique n-grams. BiGRUs followed by attention layers further process the outputs from each CNN layer. Besides, the resultant embedding is also encoded by a BiGRU with attention. Our model is developed to cope with the intricate attributes inherent to tweets such as vernacular texts, descriptive medical phrases, frequently misspelt words, abbreviations, short messages, and others. All these four outputs are summed and sent to a softmax classifier. We built a dataset by incorporating tweets from two benchmark datasets designed for the same objective to evaluate the performance. Our model performs substantially better than existing models, including several customized Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) models with an F1-score of 0.772.
