Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine if a librarybased personal digital assistant (PDA) service is a significant factor in the clinical use of PDAs at an academic medical center. Methods: Health sciences students, faculty, staff, and residents at an academic medical center were the participants. The library has serviced several thousand PDAs. This population was used as the basis for the study group. The study design is a cross-sectional study using survey methodology. The analysis was done based on age, college affiliation, and gender, and answered questions such as frequency of PDA use, usefulness of library’s PDA service, and usefulness of programs the library installed on users’ PDAs. Results: One hundred and eight people responded. Seventy-five percent of the respondents would still be PDA users, even if the library did not assist or promote the service. Almost 90% were daily PDA users. Seventy-five percent stated that they would not feel confident that they could install the software without the library’s help. Conclusions: The survey results reenforced the library’s feeling that the service fills a crucial need in the community it serves. The survey also provided information on the databases it buys, which gives the library information for future collection development.

Abstract:
The business drivers within managed care are mandating that physicians have point-of-care access to medical reference data, patient specific data, formularies, treatment protocols, and billing/coding information. One emerging technology that has the potential to provide this access with little economic investment is the mobile Personal Digital Assistant. The authors address a variety of wireless technologies and security concerns regarding real-time access to patient data. The family practice staff at the Naval Hospital Lemoore explored and contrasted the capabilities of commercially available PDAs, wireless interfaces, and medical software applications to ascertain their value within the Military Health System. A production-ready interface between the Composite Health Care System and the Nutrition Management Information Server demonstrates the potential for eliminating the difficulties associated with documenting patient encounters and capturing charges. Survey tools generate a requirements standard for deployment of this technology within the Military Health System on an enterprise-wide scale with a hybrid approach to packaging based on functionality. The authors recommend the Military Health System embrace this technology as a means to realize its vision of best value health services.

Abstract:
Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) have recently become a popular component in mobile robots. This compact processing device with its touch screen, variety of built-in features, wireless technologies and affordability can perform various roles within a robotic system. Applications include low-cost prototype development, rapid prototyping, low-cost humanoid robots, robot control, robot vision systems, algorithm development, human-robot interaction, mobile user interfaces as well as wireless robot communication schemes. Limits on processing power, memory, battery life and screen size impact the usefulness of a PDA in some applications. In addition various implementation strategies exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. No comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the different strategies and resulting architectures exist. This makes it difficult for designers to decide on the best use of a PDA within their mobile robot system. This dissertation examines and compares the available mobile robot architectures. A thorough literature study identifies robot projects using a PDA and examines how the designs incorporate a PDA and what purpose it fulfils within the system it forms part of. The dissertation categorises the architectures according to the role of the PDA within the robot system. The hypothesis is made that using a distributed control system architecture makes optimal use of the rich feature set gained from including a PDA in a robot system’s design and simultaneously overcomes the device’s inherent shortcomings. This architecture is developed into a novel distributed intelligence framework that is supported by a hybrid communications architecture, using two wireless connection schemes. A prototype implementation illustrates the framework and communications architecture in action. Various performance measurements are taken in a test scenario for an office robot. The results indicate that the proposed framework does deliver performance gains and is a viable alternative for future projects in this area.

Abstract:
As handheld computers are becoming powerful, portable and wireless, they have recently received considerable attention in education because their multi-functionality and mobility can be used for supporting learning activities in various manner. In spite of the potential in education, handheld computers have several limitations. One of the critical limitations is the small screen size. In an attempt to find factors affecting text readability on the small screen of handheld computers, this study, first, reviewed basic reading process and reading model, previous studies examining potential factors affecting text readability on a small handheld screen. This study investigated the effect of screen orientation and margin on reading performance (reading speed and comprehension) and subjective impressions (ease of reading, mental workload and satisfaction) with a handheld computer. A 2x2 within-subject factorial design was conducted with 16 participants reading texts from a PDA (Compaq iPAQ 3850). The results of this study indicated that neither screen orientation nor margin had a significant influence on objective reading performance and subjective impression. It was found that there were no prevailing preference of screen orientation and margin in reading texts from a handheld computer screen. It was also found that participants had a favorable reading experience with the handheld computers. Based on results of experiments and post-experiment questionnaire, a set of recommendations was developed to improve reading from small screens of handheld computers.

Rangnekar, Rohit Dilip. "Remote Access and Service Discovery for a Vehicular Public Safety Cognitive Radio." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34065.

Full text
Abstract:
The Virginia Tech Center for Wireless Telecommunicationsâ (CWT) Public Safety Cognitive Radio (PSCR) addresses the radio interoperability issues that plague many of the existing public safety radios â disparate frequency bands, incompatible modulation schemes and lack of active channel detection features. The PSCR allows the operator to scan for active channels, classify the detected channels, connect to any of the recognized waveforms and begin analog audio communication as well as bridge two incompatible waveforms together. The PSCR, although very useful, unfortunately is not portable enough to be used by public safety officials. The power requirement, processing requirement and equipment is respectively large, hungry and bulky. In this thesis, a possible solution to the portability problem is addressed by installing the PSCR in a public safety vehicle and using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) for remote access. The PDA allows the user to remotely scan, classify, talk, and bridge waveforms similar in operation to the PSCR. An ergonomically designed interface masks the channel and modulation selection procedure. This architecture can be extended to offer service to any remotely connected device. In the second part of this thesis, the concept of remote access is extended to a wide-area wireless public safety network. A public safety network consisting of heterogeneous devices is proposed utilizing a small number of backbone nodes. The major research focus of this section is the algorithm for distributing services across the network. Service discovery is optimized to reduce the overhead of service messages and multiple service distribution techniques are utilized depending on the location of the services. Simulation is performed to evaluate the performance of the service discovery protocol in terms of overhead, dissemination time and scalability. The proposed protocol is determined to be superior to the competition in the overhead and scalability tests.

Abstract:
Effective Health Systems make service provision easy for health workers, especially if they have access to the latest guidelines in a dynamic profession where new technologies are ever emerging. However, available data indicates that the health system in Uganda is constrained and still using old technologies despite the availability of newer technologies. As a result, this study sought to investigate the adoptability, cost effectiveness, and sustainability with regard to Personal Digital Assistants. The study, which was cross sectional in nature, was carried out in Mbale District in Eastern Uganda between 2008 and 2010. In depth interviews were conducted with health workers and key informants. Also, published and unpublished literature about theUganda Health Information Network was reviewed. The findings revealed that the use of Personal Digital Assistants also known as handheld computers can go a long way towards improving healthcare delivery in countryside health facilities. To health workers in remote places, the PDAs are a source of the latest clinical care guidelines for several diseases including HIV and AIDS as well as malaria. Health information systems have been improved and data collection and reporting have been eased by this technology. However, while evidence of viability of this technology exists, it still has challenges like power and delays in software updates among others.

Abstract:
Handheld devices have a limited amount of screen real estate. If a handheld device could take advantage of larger screens, it would create a more powerful user interface and environment. As time progresses, Moore's law predicts that the computational power of handheld devices will increase dramatically in the future, promoting the interaction with a larger screen. Users can then use their peripheral vision to recognize spatial relationships between objects and solve problems more easily with this integrated system. In the spillable environment, the handheld device uses a DiamondTouch Table, a large, touch-sensitive horizontal table, to enhance the viewing environment. When the user moves the handheld device on the DiamondTouch, the orientation of the application changes accordingly. A user can let another person see the application by rotating the handheld device in that person's direction. A user could conveniently use this system in a public area. In a business meeting, a user can easily show documents and presentations to other users around the DiamondTouch table. In an academic setting, a tutor could easily explain a concept to a student. A user could effortlessly do all of this while having all of his/her information on the handheld device. A wide range of applications could be used in these types of settings.

Abstract:
Medication adherence is essential to retaining functional independence into older adulthood. In the experiment reported here, 25 older and 26 young adults were asked to learn to use medication adherence software supported by a personal digital assistant (PDA). In addition to completing a battery of cognitive tests, each participant?s PDA skill acquisition was assessed over time (i.e., during training, immediately following training, and after a delay). Consistent with previous research, older adults required longer to learn to use the PDA and committed more errors compared to younger adults. Cognitive predictors of PDA performance included spatial ability, perceptual speed, and particularly reading comprehension. Over time, age differences in PDA performance were reduced suggesting that older adults might benefit from the use of PDAs as prospective memory aids.

Although new technology is innovated everyday and new products present con-tinuously, the failure rate of new product sales presentation is still high due to the high risk of new products sales. We could make new products more successful if we can forecast the market correctly. This study took Bass model as base and then added price and advertising expenditure to create a new and better diffusion model. This study took Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) as a sample. This study took price, sales and advertising expenditure as analysis data, from De-cember 1999 to November 2000. The data come from Taiwan Information Industry sta-tistics Journal, Taiwan import/export statistics Journal, and Rainmarker Company. According the study, diffuse ability and forecasting ability of this diffusion model is better than either Bass model or Robinson & Lakhani model. In diffusion model of PDA, the influence of public praise is stronger than mass media. The relationship be-tween price and sales is negative, which means sales will increase when price is de-crease. The relationship between advertising expenditure and innovative value is posi-tive, which means innovative value will increase when advertising expenditure increase. Therefore, the study suggests that PDA promotion can begin with educate opinion lead-ers to get more consumers. Besides, this diffusion model and Robinson and Lakhani model’s price sensitive value is small, which means the sales increasing effect according to price decrease is limited. The better way is establishing product difference instead of a price war.

The purpose of this research is to develop a wireless remote monitoring system under the operation system of PDA. Through the connection of TCP/IP on the Ethernet, the codes in the system can be transferred to the PC Servers for capturing the images transmitted from a camera, adjusting the imaging focus, and driving the motors installed on the camera mount. This system is equipped with wireless connection to set up the Server and Client, a PC and a PDA, respectively, to transmit the images. In general these images are first captured by the Server. An image detector is then used to select the targeted images. An image interpolation technique is used to minimize the image sizes. Finally, after the process of compression and division according to the format of JPEG, these images are transmitted. On the other hand, the Client (PDA) receives and assembles the targeted images and time sequences and then the real-time images can be obtained with the format of Motion JEPG. At the mean time, the control codes are sent to controller through the RS-232, to drive the step Motor and move the speed dome camera into targeted position. Utilizing the proposed wireless system, experimental results show that one image with a size of 240x320 pixels and a compression of 95%, can be transmitted within 2.7 second through the local area network.

Due to the administration of the National Health Insurance in an all-round way, people improve to request medical service quality day by day. Medical institutes, besides traditional medical service, should be devoted to improving and promoting medical service quality, offer medical treatment more convenient to be more effective service. Because of the heterogeneity of time that clinic doctor looks and examines in every development of medical institutes, patients who want to see a doctor and accept the medical care must base on the examining time of the doctor. Moreover, the patients that chronic illness or need tracked diagnosis for a long time would make the doctor unable to grasp their newest state effectively due to the uncertainty of physiology changes. Often when the patients go to a doctor, it was found that the severity of the condition, or unable to discover in transient seeing examining time then the patients’ condition is treated within effective time. Therefore, it would cause the low of medical service quality and the waste of medical resources. E-Health is to make the best of the modern technology to solve the need of people for disease treatment and prevention, and it is completed by using personal computer (PC) mostly. But PC isn’t portable so that user couldn’t get prompt service. Therefore, the developing direction of long-range medical care already trends to omnipresent medical care (u-Health). U-Health mainly provides the service that the people can enjoy e-Health no matter nowhere. In order to reach the idea of u-Health, it was proposed a medical auxiliary diagnostic and treatment information service system which made use of preventive and auxiliary operational platform as the basis in this study. Firstly, this platform could offer patients to utilize and diagnose auxiliary that diagnose and measure oneself in the action platform. Then through measuring the database, expert’s knowledge base and making policy to support the mechanism, it could also reach the function of diagnose, look after, management of self-health, and reminding going to a doctor. Secondly, by using to promote medical service quality, it could offer sufficient seeing the information of examining to patients, and estimate to and examine time effectively in advance, promote the accuracy, instant that hospital manages the performance and strengthens the disease and diagnoses and the patient one is seen and examining the quality of serving. For the highly portable, aplenty memory, and low power consumptions of personal digital assistant (PDA), the objectives of this study were to use PDA as a platform, and to combine Bluetooth with general packet radio service (GPRS) to achieve the transmission function of communication. We also designed a retrieved circuit of physiological signal that has enabled patients to transmit one’s own physiological signal including body temperature and heart rate to the circuit. Then via the conversion of circuit from analog to digital, and to deal with digitized signals, we finally transmit these to PDA by Bluetooth technology. After data are collected by PDA, all information would transmit to doctor’s computer (the server carried far) by GPRS communication to accomplish the action of medical treatment far.
