Abstract:
With over 200 definitions of leadership, the question has evolved from ‘what is leadership?’ to ‘what is good leadership?” This paper analyzes the importance of personal ethics in leadership and how ethics produce effective leaders. The importance of understanding ethics, motivation to act as a role model and developing a plan of action for an organization are discussed because of their importance regarding development of good leadership. These key aspects suggest personal ethics positively affect leadership and when made a priority for leaders will produce ethical and effective leadership.

Boskic, Natasha. "Ethics in immersive gameworlds : personal growth and social change." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/37739.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of ethical issues confronting Alternative Reality Game (ARG) players who, when faced in a gameworld with actual life problems, must collectively reach solutions which are expressed through narratives and critical literacy. The aim of this research was to draw on the experience of game players engaging in the ARG, “Urgent Evoke,” in order to respond to the following research questions: 1) What kinds of moral functioning are evident in human play in immersive gameworlds; 2) How can players and educators who use these spaces grow as individuals in their ethical sensibilities? The method of analysis for this study was virtual ethnography, including pre- and postgame surveys and interviews and the analysis of artifacts created during the game. The four-component model of moral functioning (Narvaez & Lapsley, 2005) was used as a framework for analysis with the following main categories: judgment, sensitivity, motivation, and action. However, because Narvaez and Lapsley’s division in skills and sub-skills appeared too inflexible for broad understanding of the behaviours under review, additional coding was applied. Study results suggest that ARGs motivate players to contribute to the game, and that through such contribution participants may arrive at understandings that encourage them to make changes in their behaviours outside of the gameworld. In the four component areas, the ARG offered fertile space for growth and learning through discussion, negotiation, and reflection. The study suggests that ARGs can be used successfully to encourage sensitivity to questions of ethics.

Ahlin, Jesper. "Personal Autonomy and Informed Consent : Conceptual and Normative Analyses." Licentiate thesis, KTH, Filosofi, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-212300.

Full text
Abstract:
This licentiate thesis is comprised of a “kappa” and two articles. The kappa includes an account of personal autonomy and informed consent, an explanation of how the concepts and articles relate to each other, and a summary in Swedish. Article 1 treats one problem with the argument that a patient’s consent to treatment is valid only if it is authentic, i.e., if it is “genuine,” “truly her own,” “not out of character,” or similar. As interventions with a patient’s life and liberties must be justified, the argument presupposes that the authenticity of desires can be reliably determined. If the status of a desire in terms of authenticity cannot be reliably determined, discarding the desire-holder’s treatment decision on the basis that it is inauthentic is morally unjustified. In the article, I argue that no theory of authenticity that is present in the relevant literature can render reliably observable consequences. Therefore, the concept of authenticity, as it is understood in those theories, should not be part of informed consent practices. Article 2 discusses the problem of what it is to consent or refuse voluntarily. In it, I argue that voluntariness should be more narrowly understood than what is common. My main point is that a conceptualization of voluntariness should be agent-centered, i.e., take into account the agent’s view of her actions. Among other things, I argue that an action is non-voluntary only if the agent thinks of it as such when being coerced. This notion, which at first look may seem uncontroversial, entails the counterintuitive conclusion that an action can be voluntary although the agent has been manipulated or coerced into doing it. In defense of the notion, I argue that if the agent’s point of view is not considered accordingly, describing her actions as non-voluntary can be alien to how she leads her life. There are other moral concepts available to describe what is wrong with manipulation and coercion, i.e., to make sense of the counterintuitive conclusion. Voluntariness should be reserved to fewer cases than what is commonly assumed.

Mittelstadt, Brent. "On the ethical implications of personal health monitoring." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/10101.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent years have seen an influx of medical technologies capable of remotely monitoring the health and behaviours of individuals to detect, manage and prevent health problems. Known collectively as personal health monitoring (PHM), these systems are intended to supplement medical care with health monitoring outside traditional care environments such as hospitals, ranging in complexity from mobile devices to complex networks of sensors measuring physiological parameters and behaviours. This research project assesses the potential ethical implications of PHM as an emerging medical technology, amenable to anticipatory action intended to prevent or mitigate problematic ethical issues in the future. PHM fundamentally changes how medical care can be delivered: patients can be monitored and consulted at a distance, eliminating opportunities for face-to-face actions and potentially undermining the importance of social, emotional and psychological aspects of medical care. The norms evident in this movement may clash with existing standards of 'good' medical practice from the perspective of patients, clinicians and institutions. By relating utilitarianism, virtue ethics and theories of surveillance to Habermas' concept of colonisation of the lifeworld, a conceptual framework is created which can explain how PHM may be allowed to change medicine as a practice in an ethically problematic way. The framework relates the inhibition of virtuous behaviour among practitioners of medicine, understood as a moral practice, to the movement in medicine towards remote monitoring. To assess the explanatory power of the conceptual framework and expand its borders, a qualitative interview empirical study with potential users of PHM in England is carried out. Recognising that the inherent uncertainty of the future undermines the validity of empirical research, a novel epistemological framework based in Habermas' discourse ethics is created to justify the empirical study. By developing Habermas' concept of translation into a procedure for assessing the credibility of uncertain normative claims about the future, a novel methodology for empirical ethical assessment of emerging technologies is created and tested. Various methods of analysis are employed, including review of academic discourses, empirical and theoretical analyses of the moral potential of PHM. Recommendations are made concerning ethical issues in the deployment and design of PHM systems, analysis and application of PHM data, and the shortcomings of existing research and protection mechanisms in responding to potential ethical implications of the technology.

Abstract:
Book Summary: In addition to providing foundational information about ethical codes and legal statues, this new text advocates for counseling personnel to view ethical issues as challenges for personal and professional growth. Written in an accessible, concise and easy to read style, this book endeavors to broaden the traditional focus of ethical study to include topics that students and practicing clinicians will find consistent with their own personal striving and professional needs. While covering the traditional core percepts of professional ethics in considerable detail: confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries and the use of power, and competency and professional responsibility, it also advocates for counseling personnel to view ethical issues as challenges for personal and professional growth. And, it includes a number of critical topics that counselors and therapists face or will face in daily practice. These include organizational ethics, virtue ethics, and an expanded view of multicultural ethics with a focus on community values as well as on religious and spiritual issues. This new book includes a special chapter in the appendix that emphasizes ways in which counselors and therapists can grow and achieve excellence in their personal and professional lives. Unique and essential coverage of organizational ethics (OE) is addressed making readers aware of how organizational dynamics can exert such powerful influence on ethical decision making (Ch 4 & 10-14). Unique coverage of the ethical considerations involving spiritual and religious issues as well as the use of alternative interventions in counseling and psychotherapy are covered, including the common lawsuits brought against counselors and therapists using spiritual and alternative interventions (Ch 3). A unique section in the appendix describes the psychological and philosophical basis of ethical decision-making for readers who want and need a more in-depth discussion.

McClure, Jeffrey W. "Profession and the Practice of Personal Financial Planning." Thesis, College for Financial Planning, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1526174.

Full text
Abstract:

In the last third of the twentieth century, the financial, investment allocation, and management burden of providing for higher education, retirement, and the rising cost of health care, increasingly shifted from the government and corporations to the individual member of American society. As most were unprepared to bear that burden, an unfilled need came into existence for the middle-class individual or family to receive investment advice in order to effectively plan and manage a long-term investment portfolio. In the early 1970s the title financial planner began to commonly appear in literature, most commonly associated with the agents of life insurance companies who claimed to have the capability to meet that need. Within a decade, a set of organizations and pseudo-organizations had emerged offering credentialing titles. While their methods, definitions, and standards varied widely, they were in agreement that financial planning was a profession. While the specific definition of profession as an occupational category has been the subject of historical debate, there are relatively clear minimum requirements that can be identified from sociological and economic literature as well as from officially sanctioned lists of recognized professions. At present, personal financial planning, as defined by any credentialing organization or generally, does not meet those minimum standards. However, the opportunity exists for it to achieve professional status if a national organization representing the aspirant group claiming identity as financial planners establishes and enforces a clear set of mandatory standards for its members meeting those minimum professional requirements and is able to convince both society and the various state governments that it has done so.

Dunn, Amie. "A PERSONAL EXPLORATION INTO THE ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A THEATRE TEACHING ARTIST." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2383.

Full text
Abstract:
As an artist in the field of theatre for young audiences, I encounter many definitions of  teaching artist, and within each definition lies a new set of physical, educational, and psychological responsibilities. While the term  teaching artist continues to evolve and grow, I am interested in exploring a common struggle among teaching artists: What does it mean to be an ethical and responsible teaching artist? This thesis allows me to create a personal definition of  teaching artist while exploring the relationship between responsibility, ethics, and community-based teaching. I begin by formulating my current understanding and beliefs about what it means to be a responsible teaching artist. I research how others in the TYA field, specifically Michael Rohd, Stephani Etheridge Woodson and Barbara McKean have dealt with issues of ethics and responsibility through four specific questions: How does my personal culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, and beliefs positively or negatively affect the work I do with young people? How does a teaching artist manage an environment in which there are inherently therapeutic qualities, without stepping into the role of therapist, and maintain a healthy relationship with the young people and the work? How do teaching artists maneuver through a structure where the ideologies of the teacher are guiding the project on a macro level but not a micro level? Is it possible or necessary to share responsibility with young people? As a reflective artist I can t help but question, challenge, and rethink choices I make in facilitation. I would venture to say it would be irresponsible not to do so. I am hopeful this exploration will not only improve my personal teaching but also allow and inspire others to take a look at their practice in terms of ethics and responsibility.

Baker, William R. "Personal speech-ethics : a study of the Epistle of James against its background." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1986. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU365909.

Full text
Abstract:
The term "personal speech-ethics" sounds foreign to contemporary man. Not only is the term unfamiliar, but the concern which it describes is far removed from what people today associate with their endeavor to be ethical. Time and again during my course of study, upon announcing the title of my thesis I have been met with looks of bewilderment from academics and non-academics alike. I doubt this would have happened in the ancient Mediterranean world. People in that time understood that morality in speaking is intrinsic to the fabric of society, essential for friendship, vital for learning, and, indeed, plays a part in most beneficial aspects of human existence. It is hoped that this thesis will not only be beneficial academically, but also that it will motivate the reader-as the author of James and the authors of the ancient Mediterranean literature were trying to do for their readers-to speak truly, with integrity, with grace, with benefit to others, and with all honesty to God. Any work of this kind puts the author in debt to many people, not only for academic assistance but also for practical help and for personal support and friendship. In the first category, I would like to thank Professor Robin S. Barbour, Professor I. Howard Marshall, and Dr. Ruth Edwards of the Department of NT Exegesis in the Divinity Faculty at King's College, University of Aberdeen. In the second category, I would like to thank Teresa Clark, the Divinity secretary, and also the library personnel at the now closed King's College Library, especially the always cheerful and efficient Jennifer at the information desk. In the third category, I would like to thank my mother, friends at the Christian Church of Hoffman Estates (Illinois), friends at Bridge of Don Baptist Church (Aberdeen), and these in the Aberdeen postgraduate community: Rolando and Aida Aranzamendez, Doug and Donna Barranger, Hans and Susan Bayer, Barry and Kathy Blackburn, Craig and Fran Blomberg, Gary and Carol Burge, Danny and Linda Clymer, Dean Fleming, Conrad and Shanesse Gempf, Russ and Linda Glessner, Skip and Micky Heard, Pi Shun and Yun Li Kang, Henry and Lois Lazenby, Bob and Marilyn Lowery, Mike and Krystal Nola, Eckart and Barbara Schnabel, Gary and Karen Shogren, and Phil and Anne Towner. Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Joni, whose help is of all three types mentioned above and much, much, more. The thesis includes quotations from numerous kinds of literature. In order to keep some uniformity and to facilitate understanding, quotations from all background literature (including the NT) are in English. When relevant, discussion of Hebrew and Greek words occurs in footnotes. Normally, I rely on standard translations. In some instances no standard translation exists, and then I use whatever is available. In using English translations, I often smooth out the language--especially if archaic language is employed--and sometimes supply my own translation based on the original language. Notation of translations employed for each kind of background literature and the mechanical peculiarities involved in citing some of them are detailed in the "Specialized Introduction." Exegesis of James, of course, is conducted in Greek. It may be helpful to note here as well that standard lexicons used when supplying meanings of words are: for Hebrew, Francis Brown, S. R. Driver, Charles A. Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament and William L. Holladay, A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, which is based upon the lexical work of Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner; for Hellenistic Greek, H. G. Liddell and R. Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon, ninth ed., edited by Henry Stuart Jones and Roderick McKenzie; for NT Greek, W. Bauer, A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and other Early Christian Literature, translated and edited by W. F. Arndt and F. W. Gingrich. The NT Greek text used is the United Bible Society's Third Edition.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to illustrate where the boundary between being professional and being private in the line of work as a personal assistant lie, this study will focus on the perspective of the unit manager. This to clarify the ethical approach in the assistance matters for the unit manager. To answer the study's purpose and questions, six individual semi-structured interviews have been held with unit managers responsible for personal assistance in municipal activities. During the interviews, the unit managers shared their own experiences about the subject of the study. The empirical material has been analyzed with the help of normative ethics theories of duty and sense ethics. The result of the study shows that unit managers find it difficult to take a stand as where the boundary between being professional and being private in personal assistance lies. There are many different factors to take into consideration when discussion where the boundary lies for each individual. Having good municipal guidelines regarding the work of the assistance is something the unit managers see as a good tool for taking a position on questions about the work of the assistants. The empirical material also highlights that there is a lot of ethical dilemmas in the matter of personal assistance, and how the unit managers handle these.

Abstract:
Ethical breaches in many organizations can be traced to failures in ethical leadership, which undermine trust. If a leader's ethical behavior in their private life and settings is perceived as influencing workplace ethics, it may in turn affect organizational trust levels and the development of trust. A quantitative study based on the social learning and moral theory was conducted to determine whether a difference exists between a leader's self-perceptions of their ethical behaviors inside and outside of the workplace, and whether it affects their perceived personal trustworthiness. Participants' (N = 94) scores on work and nonwork versions of the ethical leadership scale were compared using a paired-samples t test, which determined no significant differences in their ethical behaviors inside and outside of the workplace. Then multiple regression analyses were conducted, which indicated that the model containing both independent variables regarding ethical behavior inside and outside the workplace significantly predicted changes in the dependent variable personal trustworthiness: F (7, 86) = 6.025, p < .001. The model explained 27% of the variance in personal trustworthiness. The model also significantly predicted changes in scores related to propensity to trust; F (10, 83) = 3.692, p < .001. The model explained 23% of the variance in propensity to trust. This research will aid leaders in understanding more about the perception of their own ethics and how this plays into the cultivation of trust. It also has implications that may influence leadership among all types of work environs, including government organizations and industry.

Strickler, Mark Rosen. "Educational Leaders' Decision-Making: Presence, Influence, and Strength of Personal Values, Morals, and Ethics." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26940.

Full text
Abstract:
The study investigated the degree to which the personal values, morals, or ethics of educational leaders enter into their decision making processes. A review of the literature suggests that leadership preparation programs for educators do not adequately equip aspiring administrators for the ethical challenges in a global society. The scholarship of John Dewey and Donald Willower in the field of educational leadership laid the groundwork for the dual methodology pilot study conducted with high school administrators and retired superintendents. Retired division superintendents from Virginia were interviewed to yield a database of thematic strands for developing ethical construct statements. Demographic data was collected in the first portion of the survey. In the second portion of the instrument, respondents indicated strength of relevance for each of twenty valuation statements applied to each of the four ethical scenarios. The third section ended by respondents assigning one of four value labels to each of the ethical scenarios. Implications for further research include early administration to members of new leadership preparation cohorts for comparison at program completion.

"Preventing Personal Conflicts of Interest for Contractor Employees Performing Acquisition Functions| What Lessons Can Be Learned From This First Effort to Address Government Contractors Employees' Personal Conflicts of Interest." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1537342.

Full text
Abstract:

Personal conflicts of interest among contractor employees are an increasingly visible and controversial area of U.S. Government contracting, given the U.S. Government’s expanded reliance on contractor personnel. On November 2, 2011, the FAR Council issued a final rule on preventing personal conflicts of interest for contractor employees performing acquisition functions and issued a request for information regarding whether other privately contracted services in addition to acquisition support present sufficient risk to the integrity of the U.S. Government procurement process to warrant additional regulation.

This paper will review the defects in the new rule; will evaluate what lessons can be learned from the new rule to enhance future rules governing the personal conflicts of interest of U.S. Government contractors’ employees; and recommend better integration of U.S. Government compliance regulations to include conflicts of interest rules, protection of proprietary information, and the mandatory disclosure rule to reduce contractor compliance cost and promote implementation efficiencies through integration.

Baim, Clark Michael. "Theatre, therapy and personal narrative." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/33997.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary theatre has crossed boldly into therapeutic terrain and is now the site of radical self-exposure. The recent and expanding use of people’s personal stories in the theatre has prompted the need for a robust framework for safe, ethical, flexible and intentional practice by theatre makers. Such a framework is needed due to the risks inherent in putting people’s private lives on the stage, particularly when their stories focus on unresolved difficulties and cross into therapeutic terrain. With this ethical and practical imperative in mind, and in order to create a broader spectrum of ethical risk-taking where practitioners can negotiate blurred boundaries in safe and creative ways, this study draws on relevant therapeutic theory and practice to re-connect therapy and theatre and promote best practice in the theatre of personal stories. In order to promote best practice in the theatre of personal stories (a term I will use to cover the myriad forms of theatre that make use of people’s personal stories), I describe a new framework that synthesises theory and practice from the fields of psychodrama, attachment narrative therapy, and theatre and performance studies. The benefits of this integrative framework for the theatre practitioner are that it promotes safer, more ethical and purposeful practice with personal stories, and encourages more confident and creative artistic expression. The framework provides these benefits because it offers a structured model for decision-making by theatre practitioners who work with personal stories, and suggests ways that the practitioner can explore fresh artistic possibilities with clear intentions and confidence about the boundaries and ethics of the work. The integrated framework has been developed through the grounded theory process of reflective inquiry, using in particular the models of action research, the Kolb experiential learning cycle and applied phronesis. The framework has four elements, which are explored respectively in chapters one to four: 1) History: understanding the roots of the theatre of personal stories in traditions of art, oral history, social activism, theatre and therapy; 2) Ethics: incorporating wide-ranging ethical issues inherent in staging personal stories; 3) Praxis: structuring participatory theatre processes to regulate the level of personal disclosure among participants (a model for structuring practice and regulating personal disclosure is offered — called the Drama Spiral); and 4) Intentions: working with a clear focus on specific intentions — especially bio-psycho-social integration — when working with personal stories. The study concludes, in chapter five, with a critical analysis of two exemplars of practice, examined through the lens of the Drama Spiral.

Abstract:
This study seeks to show that a tradition exists of personal journalists who, more than supporting a partisan position, have moral concern and desire reconciliation. Between the First World War and the Hutchins Commission report of 1947, Walter Lippmann and other media critics theorized that journalistic objectivity is impossible, but recognized journalists' responsibility to interpret events to their publics. In the 1930s these new theories coincided with historical events to encourage journalists' personal involvement with their subjects. The work of the best personal journalists, for example, George Orwell and James Agee, resulted from moral concern. This tradition is furthered today in the journalism of Bill Moyers.

Abstract:
The objectives of this study are: (1) to explore the personal value systems of Jordanian managers; (2) to examine the relationship between the personal values of Jordanian managers and their behavior (i.e., decision making); and (3) to compare the personal value systems of Jordanian and American managers. To achieve the first and the second objectives, England's (1967) Personal Value Questionnaire (PVQ) and the Behavioral Measurement Questionnaire have been respectively utilized. To achieve the final objective, the behavioral relevance scores derived from this study are compared with those in England's (1975) study. Finally, demographic and organizational data are used to describe the characteristics of Jordanian managers and serve as covariates in the statistical analysis. In reference to the statistical techniques, England's scoring methodology, factor analysis and multiple regression, are used to determine the relationship between the personal value systems of Jordanian managers and their behavior (i.e., decisionmaking). England's (1975) "rule of thumb" (adjusted to 15 percent difference) and the Chisguare test are used to test the significant differences between the personal value systems of the Jordanian and American respondents. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The primary value orientation of Jordanian managers responding to this study is moralistic in nature, while their secondary value orientation is pragmatic. Concerning the value profile, Jordanian managers have 34, 3, 8, and 21 concepts of the PVQ as operative, intended, adopted, and weak values respectively. Behavior relevance analysis indicates that Jordanian managers have emphasized certain value concepts which reflect their perception of economic need and their social value structure. 2. According to England's procedure, there is a qualified relationship between the personal values of Jordanian managers and their reported behavior, while there is a partial relationship according to factor analysis and multiple regression. 3. There are similarities and/or differences between the personal value systems of the two managerial groups linally, a summary of the findings, along with conclusions, implications, and suggestions are offered for individuals and organizations doing business in Jordan.

Abstract:
The right to privacy is the right of individuals to determine, within reasonable limits, the extent to which they are known to others. Over the last twenty years the enormous increase in the amount of personal information on citizens maintained in government record-keeping systems has led to increasing public concern for information privacy. Computer technology has contributed to the collection, preservation and use of massive bodies of highly detailed personal information documenting individual characteristics as well as a broad range of social transactions. Automated record-keeping systems permit the linking of personal information from a wide variety of government data banks, a capability which, civil libertarians fear, is vulnerable to abuse. The social contract underlying relations between citizens and the state requires that individuals surrender some measure of privacy in return for physical and social protection. But how far does that contract extend? Does the social contract which, implicitly, governs the collection of personal information in the interests of administering various social benefits, also entitle archivists, as the official keepers of government records, to permit subsequent uses of that information once its administrative usefulness has been exhausted? Social researchers, including social historians, take an affirmative position, arguing that the closure of records containing personal information is a violation of the principle of freedom of enquiry or the scholar's right to pursue and to communicate knowledge in the interest of a greater societal good. The question is, does freedom of enquiry possess the same moral value as the right to privacy? In situations where the two values conflict, where does the archivist's moral duty lie? The thesis will address these questions by examining the ethical justifications for and against research uses of personal information and the social role the archivist plays in mediating the competing moral claims for privacy and access. The thesis concludes that, in a democratic society, the right to privacy supersedes the scholar's freedom of enquiry. In situations where the two values conflict, archivists, as the public trustees of the record, must act on behalf of that public to ensure that the right to privacy is not violated.

Abstract:
This thesis is a qualitative study that examines the correlation between the activist movement #MeToo and the possible effects it had on journalists’ professional conduct with regard to ethics, through the theoretical framework of journalism culture and patriotic journalism. The analysis is based on six semi- structured interviews with journalists that were involved in publications during the height of the #MeToo movement in Sweden. The study indicates that the movement influenced the informants, several found it difficult to differentiate the personal and work-related impact it had on them at the time. Their intense coverage of the movement was fueled by the engaged public, as well as the activist movement itself, which could be interpreted as market orientation or interventionism – or both. Their expressed solidarity with the movement’s values and goals, as well as the fact that their own industry had a specific #MeToo- campaign, positioned the journalists between their solidarity to the society and their professional identity.

Abstract:
Community journalists, most of whom work and live in small towns, are likely to create personal relationships with sources and local organizations because of their proximity and involvement in the community. Such relationships may raise ethical questions that explore how journalists manage personal ties in the community. Using a grounded theory approach, the researcher analyzed 15 qualitative, in-depth interviews, this research examined ways in which journalists in six Western communities weigh their personal relationships against traditional journalism norms such as objectivity and detachment. Analysis of these interviews found community journalists fear conflicts of interest, and many of the interview subjects said that if they know a source personally or are a member of an organization, they often try to rescue themselves from coverage of a story. The research also explored ways in which the community journalists take advantage of their community involvement, especially as it pertains to gathering information and developing sources. Respondents were asked how they suggested a reporter balance membership in the local dominant faith with coverage of church issues. The community journalists who were interviewed mostly did not see a conflict between membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and coverage of church issues. Analysis also showed that the editors had few policies governing community involvement, instead relying on reporters' personal judgment and counsel from leadership—while examining each case individually based on its prominence. Finally, this study attempted to explore the differences in community involvement between smaller and larger community newspapers. However, the research suggests that other causes, such as demographics, roots and ties to the community, leadership, and formal training, may play an equal role in encouraging involvement.

Full text
Abstract:
Personal knowledge was disclosed amongst a group of experienced registered nurses in relation to feeding severely ill patients with cancer and dementia (I,II,III), communicating with severely demented patients (IV,V), and receiving group supervision (VI). Principled ethics did not seem an adequate model for describing the ethical reasoning of experienced RNs. For the twenty RNs working in oncological care the question of whether or not to accept active euthanasia was the most urgent. The twenty RNs working in dementia care emphasized the difficulty they had in understanding the meaning of communicative cues in severely demented patients. Both groups of nurses saw themselves as advocates for their patients and seemed to reason mainly in accordance with the Golden Rule. Through a phenomenological hermeneutic analysis of video recordings of two RNs' interaction with each of four severely demented patients, it was possible to interpret the patients' vague and unclear communicative cues. But observations based on an assessment of facial muscle movements showed that it was very difficult (the FACS). Group supervision based on a narrative framework was carried out in order to support nurses working in dementia care. Interviews with the fifteen RNs showed that they experienced recognition and reassurance of worth, an increased repertoire of actions, gained new perspectives, an increased awareness of their professional role, and interdependence. It is proposed that the care of severely ill patients can be improved by the use of a narrative approach both as regards understanding patients and encouraging RNs to develop their clinical knowledge through reflecting on their own and their coworkers' narrations about care.

"Does Islam influence biomedical research ethics? : a review of the literature and guidelines, and an empirical qualitative study of stakeholder perceptions and ethical analysis." Abstract:
Islam, its texts and lived practice, finds growing importance within the global discourse on bioethics, as there is an increasing Muslim population and burgeoning interest in biomedical research and biotechnologies in the Muslim world. The aim of this thesis is to assess if and how Islam influences the ethical decision making of researchers, REC (researcher ethics committee) members, guideline developers and Islamic scholars in the biomedical research context. I began addressing this question by first reviewing the literature that has been published to explore the role that Islam plays in the literature on biomedical research ethics. There is evidence that some Muslim countries have developed "Islamic" guidelines. That is, guidelines with the explicit aim of setting out Islamic values and stating their relevance to the ethics of research. A review of research guidelines employed within countries with a significant Muslim population, was carried out, to investigate the role of Islam in such guidelines. The literature and guideline review revealed that although international guidelines have been adapted to incorporate Islamic views, studies have shown that the latter are of limited practical application within a "Muslim country" setting. An empirical study was carried out in two case study sites to assess the extent to which Islam influences ethical decision making within the context of biomedical research. 56 semi-structured interviews were carried out in Malaysia (38) and Iran (18) with researchers, REC members, guideline developers and Islamic scholars to understand whether Islam influences what they consider to be an ethico-legal problem, and if the latter emerges, then how such issues are addressed. The empirical study indicates five main conclusions. The first is that Islam and its institutional forms do impact ethical decision making in the day-to-day practice of biomedical research in countries with a Muslim population and/or in the research careers of Muslim researchers. Secondly, it shows that there are many distinctive mechanisms, such as the involvement of Islamic scholars, the process of ijtihad (independent reasoning) and the production of fatawah (legal edicts), by which Islam does identify and develop ethical views about biomedical matters. Thirdly, HIV/AIDS poses major challenges to the world of Islam as it does the rest of world. The epidemic raises issues that touch on cultural sensitivities that are important to Islamic societies and this study has shown that no simple or single response was observed to the ethical issues arising from HIV/AIDS. Fourthly, researchers face practical challenges when deliberating women's autonomy in contexts where Islam is appropriated within 'male dominated' contexts. The role and status of women is disputed in such contexts with views ranging from women needing their husband's permission to leave the home to men and women having equal freedoms. Finally, this study describes and analyses how the personal faith of researchers and their deep commitment to Islamic ethics and law influences their understanding of their legal and moral accountability and ethico-legal decision making. It shows that researchers adopt multiple roles and are required to balance numerous value systems and priorities and face moral anxiety and frustration when these different moral sources are in conflict. Overall, this study indicates that, in the countries studied, Islam does influence biomedical research ethics, and that this can be appreciated through the growing reference to Islam and its scriptural sources in biomedical research ethics literature, research ethics guidelines and the role of Islam in the day-to-day practice of biomedical researchers in the case study sites, that has been captured in the empirical study.

Williams, Meris Andrée Lineham. "The ethics experiences of eating disorder therapists who have a personal history of an eating disorder : an interpretive description." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/39511.

Full text
Abstract:
The study’s purpose was to explore and understand the professional ethics experiences of eating disorder (ED) therapists with personal ED histories, in order to generate knowledge directly applicable to maximizing such therapists’ safe and ethical practice with ED clients. Using the interpretive description qualitative approach to inquiry, data from interviews with 11 ED therapists with personal ED histories and from 2 first-person, published written accounts were analyzed inductively at manifest and latent content levels. From this emerged a description of the ethical issues and concerns reported (the ‘ethics terrain’), as well as of the interviewees’ experiences of engaging in conversation about the research topic, and their ethical self-reflections and practice changes that occurred over the course of data collection. Additional interpretation of these descriptive findings produced patterns, concepts, and ideas contributing to a more integrative understanding of participants’ ethics experiences that enhanced the clinical applicability of the study’s findings and had direct implications for practice. Among the recommendations directed towards ED-historied therapists, professionals involved in the education and training of such therapists, and the broader EDs field that emerged from this exploratory study were that ED-historied therapists receive early and ongoing training and supervision that addresses the full range of ethical issues likely to be encountered by them when delivering therapy to ED clients, including those associated with their personal ED histories. Particular attention to therapist wellness and self-disclosure practices may be warranted, as these may be associated with early career/early-in-recovery ethical vulnerabilities that could increase risk of harm to ED clients. However, there appear to be significant risks for ED-historied therapists in disclosing their ED histories in professional environments and in discussing related ethical issues. Safe climates that foster ‘positive ethics experiences’ for such therapists may facilitate their engagement with the full range of ethical issues relevant to them so that they can maximize their safe and ethical practice with ED clients.

Doheny, Shane D. "Welfare and responsibility : a qualitative study of the demise of social morality and the rise of personal ethics in welfare discourses." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/320066.

Full text
Abstract:
Much attention has been devoted in the social sciences to the reorganisation of the moral order of society (Smart, 1999). This reorganisation means that responsibility for welfare is now located with the individual. In spite of the salience given to privately held responsibility for welfare in social policy, little work has been carried out on the discourses underpinning this way of distributing responsibility (Finch and Mason, 1993, Duncan and Edwards, 1999, Rowlingson, 2002). Work on this issue is especially timely as New Labour continues the privatisation of responsibility for welfare in a way that, many people believe, neglects a moral dimension. Instead, New Labour favours a more ethical construction that exhorts the individual to do her duty by which they mean she should work for her own betterment and well-being (Levitas, 1998, Giddens, 1998, Jordan, 1998, Lund, 1999). This work begins by situating responsibility as a historically variable and discursive construction, uncovering how the understanding of responsibility changed as the problem focusing the minds of social engineers altered from one of poverty to one of security in the 1970s. While responsibility has only recently been identified as a particular issue for social policy academics (Roche, 1992, Dwyer, 1998, Dean et aI., 2004) philosophers and sociologists have paid close attention to responsibility over the past decade (Bauman, 1993, 1995, Habermas, 1990, 1995, Apel, 1989, 1996, Etzioni, 1995, Schmidtz, 1998, Goodin, 1998). Building on the issues raised by these authors, this work presents a qualitative study of government press releases, interviews with benefits recipients, members of the general public, welfare advisors and welfare benefits administrators to explore the rational structure of the discourses of responsibility for welfare. As a result, I develop the argument that while the reconfigured moral order promotes a private acceptance of responsibility for welfare, people still want a way of interpreting responsibility taking in a more public way.

Full text
Abstract:

Society's environmental practices often parallel those of our criminal justice system. Both embody "throw-away" cultures that often yield more complex problems than those they were attempting to solve. Programs that provide real meaning-making are necessary to achieve ecological and criminal rehabilitation. Fundamental ecological and personal transformation requires a deep sense of context, purpose, and reconnection extending beyond mere employability. In this research we explored how people come to terms with personal moral obligation, as well as how restorative ecological engagement may be transformational for humans in personal crisis. Primary field data were gathered from incarcerated men inside San Quentin State Prison participating in the Insight Garden Program (IGP), as well as men in the same unit attending other prison programming, or no programming. A mixed-method approach was used, including open-ended interviews and three multiple-choice survey instruments: a locus of control survey, an environmental literacy quiz, and a climate change opinion survey. Each survey revealed strong results (those consistent with recidivism correlations) for IGP participants, followed by those in other programs, in comparison with men in no programming. Qualitative results most strongly illustrated that prison programming, gardening and otherwise, can contribute profoundly toward transformative value reorientation, which is integral to rehabilitation.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how consumers reason and their opinions about personal data collection online. Its focus is to investigate whether consumers consider online data collection as an issue with moral implications, and if these are unethical. This focus is partly motivated by the contradiction between consumers’ stated opinions and actual behavior, which differ. To meet its purpose, the study poses the research question How is personal data collection and its prevalence online perceived and motivated by consumers?. The theoretical framework consists of the Issue-Contingent Model of Ethical Decision-Making by Jones (1991), thus putting the model to use in a new context. Collection of data for the study was done by conducting focus groups, since Jones’ model places ethical decision- making in a social context. The results of the study showed that consumers acknowledge both positive and negative aspects of online data collection, but the majority of them do not consider this data collection to be unethical. This result confirms partly the behaviour that consumers already display, but does not explain why their stated opinions do not match this. Thus, this study can be seen as an initial attempt at clarifying consumer reasoning on personal data collection online, with potential for future studies to further investigate and understand consumer online behaviour.
Studiens data samlades in genom fokusgrupper.

Full text
Abstract:
DOCTORAL DISSERTATION "Knowledge and application of ethical principles by forensic psychologists expert in family procedures". SUMMARY: There is an increasing requirement for forensic psychologists to act in family proceedings and the existence of numerous complaints to the ethics commissions arising from such interventions is recognized (Del Rio, 2000; Cayuela, Jarne and Molina, 2005). However, research of ethical professional practice by forensic psychologists expert in family procedures is limited. The main objective of the presented work is to study the knowledge of ethics and professional standards by forensic psychologists expert in family procedures. The secondary objectives are the analysis of the relationship between the frequency of forensic psychologists in these situations and their ethical posture, and assessment of the different types of resources that can be used in the ethical dilemmas of practice. The sample of expert forensic psychologists in family procedures is composed of 81 Spanish professionals, who have completed a questionnaire developed from the one used by Pope, Tabachnick and Keith-Spiegel (1987), a Spanish version by Del Rio, Bordas and Torres (2003), and complemented by the Spanish code of ethics for psychologists (COP, 1987), the guidelines for child custody evaluations (APA, 1994, 2009) and the study by Urra (2007). The results obtained in the empirical investigation show that all these situations have been experienced by the participants in their professional practice and their ethical posture does not fit unanimously with the ethical standards. Only one third of the participants show an ethical posture in line with the code of practice (COP, 1987). The ethical values that are held more consistently with the ethical standard are basically related to objectivity, reporting obligations and informed consent, while those related to issues of practice, legal, fees, confidentiality and dual roles disagree with the ethical standards. Ten of the fourteen information sources are assessed as "positive" about their effectiveness in promoting ethical practice for more than 70% of the sample, and American and European resources are top rated. The Practice Committee of the College, state laws, court decisions and the degree program, are rated as "more negative" for a minimum of 40% of the participants. The evaluation of the ethics held by forensic psychologists expert in family procedures shows the need for a deeper understanding of the current code of ethics and an insufficient level of legal knowledge.

"”Det är good enough” : En kvalitativ studie om uppfattningar hos personal inom tvångsvården, avseende läkemedelsassisterad behandling av opiatmissbruk i tvångsvård för missbrukare, ur ett etiskt perspektiv." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Centrum för socialt arbete - CESAR, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-384480.

Abstract:
Within the group opioid users, mortality rates are high. Many within this group are cared for in one of Sweden’s LVM-homes. Opioid dependence is often treated by using opioid maintenance therapy, in Sweden often referred to as LARO. Within LVM, LARO has been active for a little over two years and is available in three LVM-homes. This specific topic has never been researched, however a research project is currently active in one of these three LVM-homes. The aim of this study is to point out an ethical conflict in the use of LARO within compulsory care and how the employees relate to this conflict. It also aims to close a knowledge gap. We connect the results to the theories we have chosen to better interpret the results. We use theories on ethics, such as obligation ethics and utilitarianism. As these are not sufficient to interpret our results we also use labelling theory and stigma. We have carried out qualitative interviews to answer our questions. We interpret the results of these by coding transcriptions and present the results thematically. The results of the analysis, and interpretation with the help of previous research and theory, brings out different aspects. The employees emphasize the advantages they can see with LARO, such as its life saving probabilities and improvement in quality of life. They also highlight what impact the health cares role has on clients and employees and request a more distinct regulatory system surrounding LARO. They also talk about the importance of working with the social complex of problems, LARO is merely a medicine. Furthermore, the interviewed employees speak very sparsely about their ethical position on this treatment. Our results point out the importance of further research on the subject, and a discussion about the absence of ethical discourse within the professional society.

Abstract:

The project is situated in the interpretative paradigm, appealing to the search of the resolution of a problem that requires a sensitive investigation to subjectivity, plurality of ideas and complexity of situations, in contrast to a causes and effect positivist model. This work is proposed as qualitative research, specifically as a case study. The fieldwork is developed within the FM CAS-UDD, in Santiago, Chile. First-year students of Nursing, Phono audiology, Kinesiology, Medicine, Dentistry and Medical Technology careers are invited to participate. As strategies for collecting information, focus groups, informal conversations and the researcher's diary are used. The criteria of methodological rigor, proposed by Guba (1983), are applied and an analysis process carried out with three levels, making a reduction of data from the extraction of significant units, their categorization, grouping into metacategories and definition of emerging thematic nuclei. Throughout the research process, the identifier system is used, in order to ensure the confidentiality of the information provided by the participants. Main results revolve around four thematic areas, namely: dimensions that make up the SR, how the SR is learned, health professionals and RS, and finally motivations related to RS to study careers in health. 12 The motivation of the author to carry out this project, is the conviction that the passage of students through the university is an opportunity for their transformation into professionals who can contribute to the construction of a more dignified, equitable and cohesive society.
