Cahill-O'Callaghan, Rachel. "The influence of personal values on legal judgments." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/90807/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cases that reach the Supreme Court are ‘hard cases’ where the result is not clearly dictated by statute or precedent. To reach a decision in these cases, a judge must exercise discretion and the non-legal factors that influence discretion have been the subject of extensive debate. Theoretical and empirical studies examining the influences on judicial discretion have focused on demographic characteristics and facets of the judicial personality including political ideology and attitudes. Personal values are related to these factors and have been demonstrated to play a role in decision making. This thesis demonstrates a relationship between personal values and judicial decision making in the Supreme Court. This thesis translates theories and techniques used in psychological research to examine the role of personal values in judicial decision making. A novel method of assessment of value expression in judgments was developed. This method revealed a different pattern of values expressed in the majority and minority judgments of cases that divided the Supreme Court, demonstrating a relationship between values and judicial decisions (value: decision paradigm). This was confirmed by an empirical study of legal academics. Drawing on this novel method, a series of Supreme Court cases were analysed to develop a theory of discretion, division, uncertainty, and values, suggesting that the influence of values is mediated through largely subconscious instinctive responses in cases where the outcome is perceived as uncertain. The role of values has significant implications in the debates surrounding judicial diversity, which have centred on overt characteristics, how the judiciary are seen. The study of judicial values has revealed tacit diversity in the Supreme Court which is associated with judicial decision making. The value: decision paradigm provides a new framework to analyse judicial decision making, judicial division, and the exercise of judicial discretion and the subconscious influences on these processes.

Trott, Sandra. "Influence of Personal Experience on Workplace Bullying Behavior." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3962.

Full text
Abstract:
Workplace bullying has detrimental effects on victims and organizations. Research from the bully's perspective is lacking resulting in unknown causes for the aggressive behavior. Research indicates some child bullies have histories of maltreatment and that bullying may persist throughout adulthood. The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to examine associations between workplace bullying and childhood abuse/neglect, actual or perceived current victimization, attachment style, and the desire to gain social dominance. An examination of the possible influence of social dominance on the relationship between abuse and workplace bullying was also included. Social dominance theory and attachment theory provided the framework for the study. The sample consisted of 126 adult men and women. The survey instrument included the Bullying Behavior Scale, Social Dominance Q-Scale, Social Dominance Orientation Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Coercion and Conflict Scale, and Adult Attachment Scale. Data analysis included ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and linear regression. ANOVA results indicated significant associations between low- to mid-range incomes and certain industries and workplace bullying. There was a negative correlation between the relationship workplace bullying and childhood abuse/neglect. Results for domestic violence, social dominance need, and attachment style were not significant. There were no moderating effects of social dominance on the occurrence of workplace bullying and childhood abuse/neglect. Improvements to workplace environments and coping programs for bullies might result from this study's outcome.

Abstract:
Abstract In the modern era of social media influencers have assumed a more prominent role and become a wellknown phenomenon. Many companies today choose to enter in to marketing programs of influencers promoting the company`s products through their own social channels e.g. on Instagram or blogs. Influencers are exposed in most contexts on all social media, where the content is reachable for both young and adult people. This study is viewing how young, respectively adult women relate to influencers on social media. The aim of the essay is to illuminate the attitudes and relations of different generations towards the phenomenon. Furthermore the study investigates why people consume, or desist to consume contents of influencers. The questions formulated after the purpose are: • In what way do the respondents experience consumption pressure from influencers? • What role do influencers play in the daily media use of the responders? • What drives women to follow influencers? • How does the attitude towards influencers differ between the two age categories? To survey the attitudes of young and the adult women in this context it was imperative for us to talk to them. Thus the study assumes a reception perspective, to obtain a reliable interpretation of the reality of the respondent. Hence we decided to carry out six quality interviews with women ranging in age between 31 and 39 years and two group interviews with young women, all of them above 18 years of age. This study is based on the theories of recognised researchers, which are adequate to answer our purpose and questions. The most substantial theory is the uses and gratifications theory and the theory of the two-step hypothesis, which is crucial to understand how influencers are created. Furthermore the user model is elaborated, understood as how people use media, and how opinion leaders are created. Then it emerges how the new media are from a point of view of the uses and gratifications theory, how social media can induce problems when it comes to a persons wellbeing. This study is established on substantial researcher's theories which are relevant in order to provide answers to our purpose and questions. The most extensive theories are uses and gratifications theory and two-step flow, which are central components that provides the understanding on how people supply their needs and how opinion leaders are created. Subsequently, the new media is viewed through uses and gratifications theory, how social media may cause problems regarding the well-being of a person.    4 To summarize, based on the results of the study, we may conclude that influencers tend to affect all respondents. The first group interview of the younger had a negative attitude because of how they were influenced by them. The second group as well as the older women had almost frequently a positive attitude on how they were influenced by them as they received valuable inspiration from the influencers in return. Finally our conclusion is that the influencers have an impact on the great masses, and not because of different ages. The distribution of gratuities is an motivation to follow influencers and that they are always a part of their consumption of media.

Somfai, Rita. "Revisiting the Personal Influence Model as an Ethical Standard in Public Relations Theory and Practice." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2009. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2437.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to better understand the importance and application of the personal influence model in relationship building between organizations and public decision makers. The personal influence model was added by Sriramesh and Grunig (1992) as a potential fifth model to Grunig and Hunt's (1984) four models of public relations practice (as cited by Grunig in Heath, 2007); however, this essential relationship building approach has not been examined in the public relations literature as it could have been. Scholarly research since the addition of the personal influence model has mostly occurred in Asia and India. Studies on the topic have been published in just a few instances in the United States. Furthermore, the studies have largely focused on internal communication or on exclusively domestic contexts, with no attempts to extend the examination to organizations that necessarily practice relationship building across national boundaries. This study seeks to contribute to the public relations literature based on the personal influence model by examining the practice of this model outside of Asia, in a global, non-profit religious organization that is headquartered in the United States, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (hereafter referred to as LDS Church). For three decades this global organization has implemented and emphasized the building and nourishing of one-on-one relationships with civic leaders and key decision makers across nations. This research will also examine the impact of such practices. The method chosen for this study is a qualitative exploration through personal interviews with ten public affairs practitioners of the organization, from both domestic and international arenas. The practitioners of this entity have accumulated decades of combined experiences in cultivating the personal influence model.

Abstract:
The pattern of relationships between three sets of variables and gender differences in these variables were investigated. The sets of variables were personality traits, mentoring and networking, and career success. The investigation took place in an organisational context that did not appear to be male-dominated. It was expected that certain personality traits would increase the likelihood to report mentoring and participation in organisational networks, which, in turn would enhance objective and subjective career success. It was also expected that women would report more mentoring and networking, which would reflect on gender differences in career success. Questionnaire data from 272 individuals (199 women and 73 men) who were clerical and administrative employees in organisations from the British higher education sector were analysed. Hierarchical regression analysis and causal path analysis based on least squares regression were the main data analytic techniques. In general, the expectations regarding the pattern of relationships were confirmed. Personality exerted both direct and indirect effects on objective career success and on subjective career success. Networking exerted direct effects on objective career success and indirect effects on subjective career success, through its effects on objective career success. Mentoring exerted direct effects on subjective career success and indirect effects, through its effects on networking, on objective career success. Provision of mentoring was affected by reception of mentoring, but its effects on career success were not of particular substance. The implication of the findings is that objective career success exerts positive effects on subjective career success, but fostering a mentoring culture in an organisation can improve employees' feelings about their careers in a more effective way than offering organisational rewards such as promotions. Regarding gender differences, according to the expectations, women reported more mentoring, networking, and provision of mentoring and more subjective career success, but men reported more promotions and higher grades. The analysis suggests that elimination of male dominance in numerical terms may not be a sufficient condition for the elimination of gender differences in career success. Cultural shifts and changes in procedures and processes (e.g., promotion process, committee composition) may also be needed. A number of limitations, especially the cross-sectional nature of the study, exist. Finally, an important implication is that there may be a clash of interests between individual employees who want to advance their careers and organisations which should benefit most from committed employees and meritocratic procedures in the allocation of rewards. More research across organisational types and contexts (e.g., self-employed individuals) is suggested.

Quinn, Charles Andrew. "Examining the influence of safety management in the personal spaceflight industry." Thesis, City University London, 2012. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/737/.

Full text
Abstract:
Suborbital flights will soon take flight as a viable commercial operation. Operators such as Virgin Galactic, along with their designer Scaled Composites, will be responsible for safety of the flight crew, Spaceflight Participants and indeed the uninvolved public beneath their flight trajectories. Within the United States, the Federal Aviation Authority’s Office of Commercial Transportation (FAA-AST) has provided Launch License Regulations and Guidelines for prospective design organisations and operators alike. The aim of this thesis is to analyse suborbital spaceflight approaches to safety management and to determine whether effective safety management is being or could be applied to influence vehicle design and subsequent operation. The thesis provides a review of current safety-related information on suborbital spaceflight, existing space safety information and also existing aviation safety information. The findings of the review concern two main areas; firstly that a gap exists within suborbital safety management criteria, and secondly that a gap exists in existing aviation-based safety guidelines. In the first case, the research concluded that FAA-AST safety management criteria did not present sufficiently explicit and rationalised guidelines for this new industry. Indeed, the thesis argues that the scope of the FAA-AST regulations (covering both orbital and suborbital aspects) is too broad, and that regulations and guidelines should be split into distinct orbital and suborbital sections so as to provide more effective directives. In Europe, no such regulations or guidelines exist as there has until now been no requirement (a ‘customer’) for the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to implement such a framework. This thesis sought to address this gap by using a safety tool (Goal Structuring Notation) to construct a goal-based regulatory approach, which was included in a draft EASA suborbital Policy. Secondly, the main significant finding of this research is that a gap (literally) exists between current aviation-based design organisation safety guidelines and operator safety risk management guidelines. This absence of communication means operators are not managing their safety risks as effectively as they could. The thesis argues that the suborbital domain should take heed, as most vehicles are based on aircraft designs and therefore suborbital operators will, no doubt, apply ‘best practice’ either from the aviation or commercial space domains. Neither is appropriate or effective. As a result of the main finding a contiguous safety model has been developed which employs a ‘key (platform) hazard’ to join the design organisation analysis to the operator safety risk management, therefore completing an explicit sequence from the initiating causal event to the accident. The model is demonstrated using case studies from space disasters (Space Shuttle) and also from aviation accidents (Air France flight AF447); the model details the explicit accident sequence and shows missing or failed controls leading up to the accident. The research enabled models to be constructed and also proposed additional and explicit guidelines for the suborbital industry such as medical and training standards and separate safety criteria for vertical launch vehicles; these are included as recommendations and need to be ratified by recognised bodies such as the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety’s Suborbital Space Safety Technical Committee for inclusion in their Space Safety Standards Manual. In the latter case these recommendations are already agenda items for the Technical Committee to address.

Whitaker, Westry Allen. "We Became Teachers| The Influence of Personal Reading on Curriculum Understanding." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3630632.

Full text
Abstract:

The books we care about are part of us (Sumara 1996, 2002). It is the story of this literary experience as told by three currently practicing English teachers that interests me when I ask, "How does a teacher's personal reading inform his or her understanding of curriculum?" Seeking the representation of this story, I employ qualitative methods that value unique perspectives, interpretations, and the presence of my subjectivity (van Manen, 1990; Seidman, 2006; Jardine, 2006). The combined use of autobiography—in the tradition of currere (Pinar, 1975)—and the hermeneutic method (Heidegger, 2008; Nakkula & Ravitch, 1998) best matches this responsibility. By representing the profound impact of personal reading on my teaching of literature, I contribute my autobiographical voice and story to this study.

This dissertation is influenced by contemporary literary theory, Sumara's (1996, 2002) scholarship on reading and curriculum, and Rosenblatt's (1994, 1995) reader response theory. Data collection follows Seidman's (2006) discussion of semi-structured conversations, analysis is performed with attention to van Manen's (1990) qualitative human science design, and representation is carried out following Seidman's (2006) description of participant narrative profiles. I begin this analysis by exploring two super-ordinate themes: personal reading and curriculum understanding. Sub-themes in the area of personal reading are unique. Sub-themes representing curriculum understanding are consistent across participants. These sub-themes include a teacher's definition of curriculum, professional identity, and teaching of literature. Analysis reveals a recognizable relationship between each teacher's personal reading and curriculum understanding: each teacher's personal reading experience is reflected in his or her teaching of literature.

Through its exploration of the relationship between personal reading and curriculum understanding, this study provides a glimpse into the tangled intricacies of curriculum. Since many reading experiences described in this work were born outside of the classroom, this study confirms the perspective that curriculum includes all learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Beyond this confirmation, this study reaffirms several key components of teaching and learning: the fundamental function of literature to interrupt familiarity, the role of teacher as interrupter, and the respect for existential experience as a source of scholarship.

Hartman, Jonathan B. "Hierarchical influence of personal values and innovativeness on adolescent Web consumption." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280610.

Full text
Abstract:
This study provides a better understanding of both adolescent Web-use and the factors that influence teen Web-consumption. To this end, a hierarchical, cognitive-behavioral decision-making model of personal values → innovativeness → Web-consumption was proposed and tested. More specifically, Web-consumption behavior was thought to dichotomize into hedonic and utilitarian domains. Two hundred high school students from a Southwestern state, representing various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, anonymously completed surveys. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses identified three latent factors of personal values (personal-self, ambition, power); four factors of innovativeness (vicarious-pensive, vicarious-future, adoptive, use); and two factors of global Web-consumption (hedonic, utilitarian). The global Web-consumption scales were cross-validated against specific Web-consumption behaviors. Global utilitarian behaviors were practical and obligatory, while global hedonic behaviors were experiential and discretionary. Specific hedonic Web-consumption included escape from reality, use with friends, and music activities, while specific utilitarian Web-activities included use for future planning, doing homework, and, coaching parental Web-searches. The two-stage structural equation model analysis with nested comparisons confirmed the hierarchical flow of the relationships. Results indicated that innovativeness served as a middle-level variable, and mediated between the Web-consumption behaviors of teens and their personal values. Each personal value factor displayed unique predictive power on unique factors of innovativeness, which, in turn, displayed unique paths to each Web-consumption factor. For instance, the "ambition" value predicted "vicarious-future" innovativeness which, in turn, predicted both "utilitarian" and "hedonic" Web-consumption. Also, the "personal self" value linked to "vicarious-pensive" innovativeness, which, in turn, predicted "hedonic" Web-consumption. The findings suggest that teens are intrinsically motivated to use the Web and benefit from computer use, even if the use is hedonic in nature. However, parents and educators may choose to monitor adolescent Web-consumption more closely. The paradox of technology can create cognitive dissonance, and teens report regular visits to sites that their parents would not approve of. The study has theoretical and practical import. New measures, and a confirmed a priori hierarchical structure, will be useful tools to researchers of consumer behavior. Professionals are advised to consider applications that would benefit adolescents, including structured after-school activities and curriculum that further integrates the Web and the classroom.

Abstract:
This study explored the factors that influence public high school students' advanced math course-taking. The factors investigated were parental involvement, peers' educational aspirations, students' own educational aspirations, and math self-concept. These factors were further examined for students in different settings as defined by school demographic variables of urbanicity, minority concentration, and poverty concentration. The study analyzed longitudinal data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS: 88), using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that parental involvement was much more important than peer influence for students' educational aspirations, and in turn, for their advanced level mathematics course-taking. Parental involvement had a larger effect for students in high-minority, high-poverty urban schools, who, on the average, had taken the smallest number of advanced mathematics courses, compared to students in other settings. Results from the study indicated that African-American students' math self-concepts were not affected by their previous math achievement, suggesting the lack of feedback about their mathematics performance. Recommendations based on the findings included improving parental involvement for all students, especially for students in high-minority, high-poverty urban schools, and providing more feedback to African-American students about their level of performance in mathematics and its consequences in terms of advanced math course-taking.

Abstract:

Due to increased internationalisation around the world the expatriate rate has grown significantly during the last years and has become a more important tool within organisations. Therefore, the need for expatriates increases and it is of importance for organisations to broaden their expatriate base and not exclude particular groups of employees, such as women are today.

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the role that gender and personal traits of the HR managers play in evaluating and selecting expatriates. Furthermore, we wanted to investigate this relationship with a developed model.

The result of this research indicates that to be able to implement, investigate and examine research constituted in another country than Sweden, the theory must be adapted to match the Swedish demographical and humanitarian structure regarding this field.

Abstract:
Relationships between victim race, defendant race, participant characteristics, and general perceptions were assessed as they pertained to the final verdict. Photographs and brief date rape vignette were given to 339 participants. Participants were also asked to respond to follow-up questionnaire, Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Short Form scale, and Feeling Thermometer. Finally, participants were asked to render a final verdict, guilty or not guilty. Results indicated that participants’ perceptions relating towards responsibility significant predicted the likelihood of a guilty verdict being rendered. Additionally, results showed that there were significant differences across victim race and defendant race on verdict, such that overall the further the victim and defendant were apart on the color line, the more likely it would be for that case to receive a guilty verdict. Several participant variables also had significant effects on verdict, assignments of responsibility, and warmth towards specific racial groups. Results, future directions, and general implications are discussed.

Kvaran, Trevor Hannesson. "The Influence of Social Norms and Personal Values on Charitable Giving Behavior." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/247271.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the non-profit sector is now the third largest sector of the global economy, relatively little is known about the psychological processes that underlie decisions to donate to charity. Across five experiments, the present research explores two factors that are thought to underlie giving: social norms and personal values. Study 1 elicits personal values and manipulates descriptive social norm information and finds that both of these factors influence giving behavior. Study 2 replicates these findings with injunctive norms in place of descriptive norms. Study 3 manipulates both descriptive and injunctive social norms within a single study and finds that while both have an influence on giving, they do not interact in any meaningful way with each other. Study 4 manipulates descriptive and injunctive norm information in the context of a realistic online donation decision and finds that both injunctive norms influence rates of giving, but that descriptive norm information alone influences willingness to give. Study 5 experimentally manipulates the costs and benefits associated with viewing social information and finds that while participants are willing to view social information when there are no associated costs, willingness to view information decreases dramatically under even very small costs. We conclude in Chapter 6 by discussing the implications of these findings and potential directions for future research.

Full text
Abstract:
Two case studies – Psychology and Sports Health and Exercise Science (SHES), investigated the influence of personal epistemology on teaching and learning in a higher education context. The investigation used the concept of a socialised habitus of academic personal epistemologies (SHAPE) on which to base the studies contained within the thesis. The theoretical underpinnings of SHAPE can be found in the work conducted on social practice theory (SPT), which includes Bourdieu (2000), Foucault (1984), Reckwitz (2002); and which draws on situated learning theory, activity systems theory, actor network theory, social learning theory (e.g. Bandura, 1977; Lave, 1988; Lave & Wenger, 1991; Vygotsky, 1978) as discussed in Trowler (2012). In addition, SHAPE draws on the work of Bourdieu (1977) and his theory of habitus; and the burgeoning research into personal epistemology (epistemological beliefs is also used in the literature before this term, so they will be used interchangeably). This branch of research began with the seminal work of William Perry culminating in his text entitled ‘Forms of intellectual and ethical development in the college years: A scheme’ (1970). The research was underpinned by an instrumentalist ethos (Dewey, 1930) and adopted a mixed methods research design. Phase One of the research process began with the confirmation of the reliability and validity of a quantitative measure of personal epistemology – The Discipline-focused Epistemological Belief Questionnaire (DEBQ, Hofer, 2000). In Phase One and Two, a shortened, more robust revised version of the DEBQ was then used to test for differences between participants at the group level in different modules of study, and for changes in personal epistemology over the duration of a semester of study. The Approaches to Teaching Inventory (Trigwell & Prosser, 2004) was used in both case studies, as was the DEBQ. The Approaches to Study Skills Inventory for Students (Entwistle, Tait & McCune, 2000) was used in the Psychology Case Study, which also included qualitative data captured via a series of interviews with fourteen students and two teachers from two psychology undergraduate year two modules; and a focus group involving three of the students who had participated in the interview phase. The different phases and methods of data collection allowed the author to make comparisons between the perceptions of, and approaches to, teaching and learning in the two case studies. 3 The analyses in Phase One resulted in a revised, abbreviated version of the DEBQ. The results from all four phases of the investigation suggest the utility of SHAPE as a concept on which to base future research. The findings from this series of studies suggest the personal epistemology of the teacher has the most profound effect on their students’ personal epistemologies as a group over a semester of study, whilst also recognising the contribution other elements of the teaching and learning context make. Variation within groups of students was also evident for dimensions of personal epistemology, and this influenced their perceptions of teaching, learning, and assessment; and how they approached their studies. The conclusions to be drawn are: SHAPE is a useful addition to the ‘tribes and territories’ (Trowler & Becher, 2001) discipline level of analysis and is a more nuanced, contextual unit of analysis as recognised and recommended in the text entitled ‘Tribes and Territories in the 21st Century: Rethinking the significance of disciplines in higher education’ (Trowler, Saunders & Bamber, 2012). The strength of SHAPE lies in its recognition of the epistemological, ontological, and axiological influences on the processes of teaching, learning, and assessment within a higher education context. As such, SHAPE has the potential to make a useful contribution in the changing horizon of higher education manifest in the modular, semester based curriculum, and the burgeoning of ‘interdisciplinarity’ and its challenge to the established academic disciplinary fields.

Kehiaian, Scott E. "FACTORS AND BEHAVIORS THAT INFLUENCE FINANCIAL LITERACY IN U.S. HOUSEHOLDS." NSUWorks, 2012. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/hsbe_etd/53.

Full text
Abstract:
Financial planning has often been thought of as the most useful financial resource for the average American family. Prior to the Great Recession of 2008, research on factors that influence financial literacy has been scarce in academic journals. Very few resources are available to help guide household finance. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine factors that influenced financial literacy in U.S. households. Using existing financial literacy quiz questions, a personal financial literacy quiz was given to a sample of Debtors and Non-debtors in the Middle District of North Carolina. An average quiz score was developed for each participant, and was used as the dependent variable for the study. Various survey questions were used to develop 149 independent variables broken up into demographic factors, psychological factors, and financial behaviors for the same participant. Regression analyses were used to determine which of the 149 independent variables were significantly related to financial literacy. Factor analysis was also used to determined factors of financial literacy. The study found 125 significant factors of financial literacy in 16 different categories including: demographic factors, psychological factors, financial actions, financial attitudes, planning actions, mortgage decisions, budgeting habits, goal planning, retirement planning, credit management, income planning, insurance planning, mortgage debt ratios, savings planning, investment planning, and financial self-control. Future studies can expand the sample size to include all 50 states, and to help determine which factors of financial literacy should be used in building a personal financial planning model that all professionals and families can use to maximize personal financial success.

Fournier, Jessica. "A Qualitative Study of the Personal Reactions and Experiences of Adolescent Students Who Have Been Retained." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2009. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1018.

Full text
Abstract:
Grade retention is an educational practice that requires students to repeat the grade level they have just completed (Jimerson, 2001). In the United States, an estimated 15% to 19% of students are retained each year (Holmes, 2006). Previous research on grade retention is comprised of quantitative studies describing students who have been retained as having higher suspension rates, coming from a low socio-economic status, and having an increased chance of dropping out of school (Christle, Jolivette, & Nelson, 2007; Janosz, et al., 1997; Jimerson & Ferguson, 2007; Jimerson et al., 2002; Suh & Suh 2007). While these studies provide a wealth of information about grade retention, they do not describe how adolescents reacted when they were retained and how they experienced retention in their lives. In this qualitative study, eight students and one of their parents were interviewed about their experiences and reactions with retention. The dominant themes identified from student and parent interviews suggest that adolescent students and their parents believed that adolescent students reacted negatively to retention, experienced changes in their lives, experienced a loss of self-esteem, felt left behind by peers, felt older than peers, felt that retention added another year of school to their education, and that adolescent students’ school performance improved following retention. Implications for school counselors are provided.

Nagarajah, Bertram A. "The influence of professional training and personal factors on technostress| A correlational study." Thesis, Capella University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10252509.

Full text
Abstract:

This study investigated the influence of professional training and personal factors on five categories of technostress: techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. The goal of the study was to determine whether experience and knowledge gained during professional training influenced the level of technostress individuals experienced in the workplace. The research also sought to determine how personal factors influence technostress directly and whether those factors moderate the relationship between professional training and technostress. The specific personal factors that were examined included gender, generational cohort, race, religion, and education level. A sample of 212 individuals who regularly use information technology as part of their daily work routine were surveyed on their levels of stress related to techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. Multiple linear regression analyses were then conducted to examine the relationship between the criterion variables (categories of technostress) and the predictor variables (professional training and personal factors). The data analysis demonstrated that while professional training had little influence on technostress, women experienced significantly higher levels of techno-overload, older participants experienced significantly higher levels of stress related to techno-complexity, non-Whites experienced significantly higher levels of techno-insecurity, and age impacted levels of techno-uncertainty in individuals in the IT/engineering field who had received professional training. These results suggest that there is a need for further investigation into how specific elements of technostress impact individual populations.

Kalyva, Efrosini. "Young peoples' perceptions of smoking and personal social factors that influence their behaviour." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2001. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10007373/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to identify the psychosocial factors that influence adolescent smoking and to make suggestions for a smoking prevention/intervention programme. It is of particular interest to explore adolescent smoking in the Greek setting, where both teachers and pupils smoke on the school premises and smoking is socially acceptable. The participants are 672 pupils who attend six Greek schools - 351 aged 12-13 years old (mean age=12.6 years) and 321 aged 15-16 years old (mean age=15.8 years). Self-report, anonymous and confidential questionnaires are completed at the beginning and at the end of the academic year (7 months apart). The participants are grouped into four categories according to their smoking behaviour and 150 of them are randomly selected and interviewed. The interviews are semi-structured and employed to validate the self-reports and to provide more in-depth information on certain issues. Information on the situation in Greek schools is collected from 120 teachers who are interviewed at the beginning of the academic year. There is a significant increase in the smoking prevalence of both age groups at phase two. The patterns of the changes in smoking support the theory of stages. Psychosocial factors, such as school, teachers, parents, siblings and friends exert different levels of influence on the adolescents, who are not merely passive recipients. Personality factors are equally important determinants of the adolescents' decision to experiment with cigarettes and take up the habit of smoking or not. Adolescents foster many misconceptions about cigarettes, which may differ according to their gender. Their knowledge tends to mirror a reproduction of statements they do not fully understand. Intention to smoke in the future seems to be a fairly accurate predictor of taking up smoking eventually. Suggestions for smoking prevention/intervention programmes and a model of layers of influence on adolescent smoking are discussed.

Lay, Debra J. "Exploring how teachers' personal experiences with childhood bullying influence their response to student bullying." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3570206.

Full text
Abstract:

The results of the study provided a unique perspective of 20 teachers and how their personal childhood bullying experiences influenced their response to student bullying. Teachers who participated in this study acknowledged that they had a heightened awareness of student bullying, felt their positive attitude was due to their Olweus training as well as a sensitivity towards students who are bullied, indicated that they were aware of the negative impact on their self-esteem, and identified the role empathy played in their response to student bullying. The question of self-efficacy in fourteen participants (70 percent) was an alarming emergent theme in teachers’ response to student bullying. Although fifteen participants (75 percent) responded in a proactive way, the participants’ self-confidence in stopping bullying altogether remained an issue. The benefits of responding to bullying, according to the participants, included stopping the cycle so as the student being bullied would not bully others, and these same participants felt that responding to bullying helped to build trust between teachers and students. The results of the study provide a framework of recommendations for educational leaders, policy makers, guidance counselors, school psychologists, and teachers.

Huang, Jo-Ting. "A cross-cultural study of the influence of personal cultural orientation on brand loyalty." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/14421.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates a generalisable cross-cultural model for brand loyalty by integrating extant theories of personal cultural orientation (of individualism and collectivism), self-congruity (actual, ideal, social, and ideal social self-congurity), customer satisfaction, attitudinal brand loyalty, and behavioural brand loyalty. Creating brand loyalty is a key branding issue in modern marketing. Brands are faced with the challenge of building, maintaining, and increasing their capacity to drive customer loyalty across borders with consumers of different cultures. Notwithstanding the growth of culturally centered brand loyalty research, the focus of research today continues to be on cross-cultural differences, often overlooking the generalisable cross-cultural path to consumer brand loyalty. This study instead addresses this overlooked topic of cross-cultural generalisabilities across nations. To assess the cross-cultural generalisability of the conceptual model, survey data from a non-student sample were collected from middle-class, Generation Y individuals of the relevant nationality who have always lived in China, Singapore, or the United States. After performing data cleaning procedures, 541 usable responses from three countries were analysed with the use of the SEM model. The findings show that the personal cultural orientation of collectivism has a positive effect on behavioural brand loyalty through ideal social self-congruity, customer satisfaction, and attitudinal brand loyalty. These findings extend brand loyalty research by considering how an individual’s personal cultural orientation impacts brand loyalty. Moreover, the findings offer marketers increased insight into consumers’ brand loyalty formation process in cross-cultural contexts. The limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are also presented.

Dubois, Elizabeth. "The strategic opinion leader : personal influence and political networks in a hybrid media system." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2015. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:35b1e408-a70a-4ea0-9c41-10d7df024ee9.

Full text
Abstract:
Opinion leaders are important political players who bridge the gap between the political elite and the general public. Traditionally opinion leaders use social pressure and social support via interpersonal communication to personally influence the opinions, attitudes and behaviours of their everyday associates (who make up the general public). However, in a hybrid media system opinion leaders have access to added channels which mean they can communicate with audiences beyond their everyday associates and/or engage in non-interpersonal interactions, potentially setting the stage for opinion leaders to become more influential since they can access more members of the general public. Conversely, since the ability of opinion leaders to influence others traditionally relies on strong social bonds, even if audiences are accessible for information transfer, the lack of social connection could mean influence does not flow. As such, opinion leaders' channel choice in a hybrid media system is potentially very important. To investigate the patterns of channel use as well as motivations for, and impacts of, channel choices by opinion leaders, a two phase mixed-methods study is employed. Phase one includes online social network analysis of the #CDNpoli (Canadian politics) hashtag on Twitter and an online survey. Phase two investigates the communication practices of 21 specific digitally enabled opinion leaders drawn from the #CDNpoli network. Two hour in-depth interviews are paired with visualizations of the participants trace data. Telephone interviews with associates (alters) of the primary interviewee were conducted (N=27). This design is therefore responsive to the multi-channel reality of a hybrid media system and improves upon large scale and single channel studies which are most common in this line of research. Now strategic and, at times, impersonal, a fundamental shift in how influence is derived challenges theories of social influence and information dissemination. Two types of strategic opinion leaders emerge: enthusiasts and champions. Their strategies contribute to a wider trend - a "just-in-time" informed citizenry - where those who do not opt in to receiving messages from the political elite only get information at the last possible minute, such as during a scandal or an election. Future research and communication strategy must be sensitive to the varied aims and tactics of digitally enabled opinion leaders as well as the subsequent inconsistent relationship between the uninformed and their political system.

Metcalf, Nicolette. "Exploring firefighters perceptions of how their working experience and personal lives influence each other." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32803.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this qualitative study was to explore firefighters' perceptions of how their working experiences and personal lives positively and negatively influence each other. The purpose of this study was also to understand firefighters' perceptions of the support that is currently available to them and what further support they require, in order to cope with the demands of work and personal relationships. The research was conducted in two research settings and permission was gained to conduct the research from the City of Cape Town's Research Department and the Fire Chief of the Fire and Rescue Department. A qualitative research design was used to conduct this study, and purposive sampling was used to select the sample. A total of twenty, male firefighters were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. A digital recorder was used to ensure that the interviews could be recorded accurately. The interviews were transcribed and analysed following Tesch's (1990) method of data analysis. The findings from this study reflect that the participants' work experiences and personal lives do influence each other. The participants reported that the training and education they received to become a firefighter, their relationship with their colleagues, and shift work had a positive influence on their personal lives. At the same time a number of workplace stressors such as shift work, repeated exposure to trauma, challenging aspects of career advancement and the negative consequences of the rank structure, were identified as negatively influencing their personal lives. Positive factors such as social support including support from family and work as well as religious support help buffer the negative effects of stress experienced by firefighters in their work. Personal and family challenges were seen to have a negative influence on firefighters working experience. Lastly, recommendations were made to various stakeholders including the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and Wellness branch. These included the need for online surveys, sports days and informal meetings between management and firefighters. Recommendations to EAP and Wellness branch included 2 continuous marketing of EAP services, pro-active interventions such as stress management and building resilience for firefighters, management training as well as wellness events.

Abstract:
The study investigated the degree to which the personal values, morals, or ethics of educational leaders enter into their decision making processes. A review of the literature suggests that leadership preparation programs for educators do not adequately equip aspiring administrators for the ethical challenges in a global society. The scholarship of John Dewey and Donald Willower in the field of educational leadership laid the groundwork for the dual methodology pilot study conducted with high school administrators and retired superintendents. Retired division superintendents from Virginia were interviewed to yield a database of thematic strands for developing ethical construct statements. Demographic data was collected in the first portion of the survey. In the second portion of the instrument, respondents indicated strength of relevance for each of twenty valuation statements applied to each of the four ethical scenarios. The third section ended by respondents assigning one of four value labels to each of the ethical scenarios. Implications for further research include early administration to members of new leadership preparation cohorts for comparison at program completion.

Abstract:
There is growing public awareness regarding the risk associated with poor indoor air quality (Ward, Underberg et al. 2009) and indoors like in the home and workplace (Bernstein, Alexis et al. 2008). The aim of the study is to measure the magnitude of concentration in indoor environments, and personal levels of some air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds, PM2 s, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, oxy-PAHs and Black carbon. Estimate the mass of BC that might be in the breathing zone and the lung dose. To conduct the personal exposure and home and workplace measurements, 45 healthy, non-smoking adult volunteer subjects were recruited. Concentration of the compounds might vary across volunteer's activities, therefore the importance of having personal exposure data which might be more representative. To accurately assess the human exposure and the human risk associates with the air pollution. New or recently remodeled building were found to have high concentration of VOC, therefore, a decay time should be considered before to move into a new buildings. BC particle size concentrations need to be investigate deeply as few information is available. Moreover not information about BC deposited dose was found.

Bulluck, Ethel Gardner. "The Influence of Personal Networks on the Career Decision-Making of African-American Professional Women." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3728852.

Full text
Abstract:

This study examined the influence of personal networks on the career decision-making of African-American professional women through the lens of social cognitive career theory. A review of the career development literature shows growing interest in social networks, both online and face-to-face, and their relationship to individual career development. While research has been conducted on the career development of African-American women, the network research on African-American women is relatively scarce (Combs, 2003; Young, 2013). Combs (2003) noted that informal socialization activities impact career advancement and that few studies have examined the intersection of race and gender on informal networks. This study sought to address that gap. Furthermore, research on the influence of personal networks on the career decision-making of African-American women could both add to the network literature on African-American women and have implications for the career counseling of African-American women.

The primary research question addressed in this study was: What is the relationship, if any, between informal personal networks and the career decision-making of African-American professional women? A basic qualitative study was conducted with semi-structured interviews serving as the primary method of data collection. Ten African-American women with at least ten years of professional experience and a minimum of two career decision points were purposefully selected for this study.

Data was analyzed using coding and thematic analysis to understand and interpret the meaning that each participant construed from their experiences with career decision-making and their personal networks. Themes emerged in four primary areas: (1) the career decision-making process, (2) the composition of the participants' personal networks, (3) the influence participants' personal networks had on their career decisions, and (4) key learnings. Based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations for future research and practice are presented.

Abstract:
This study examined the demographic characteristics of a sample of Hispanic students enrolled at a Southwestern university. In connection with these data, the analysis proceeded to delineate the relationship between some selected personal characteristics and the reasons that influenced their decision to enroll in higher education. It was found that Hispanic students that come to the university directly from high school and those that transfer from community colleges were very similar demographically, linguistically and academically speaking. Moreover, the reasons that influenced their decision to continue their education at the university level were identical. Those were: (1) Training in your career interest. (2) Overall training. (3) Quality of course instruction. (4) Professional competence of professors. (5) Expense of the institution. (6) Intellectual stimulation provided by climate. At a deeper level, there were four main factors that underlied the dimensions for their reasons to enroll in higher education. Those were: Factor I "Democratic environment and facilities", Factor II "Internal and external cultural features", Factor III "Academic quality of the institution" and Factor IV "Social life of the institution." The statistical results of whether there were sex, socio-economic and language differences with the four factors, showed that the interaction of sex and language background of the respondent had an effect on "Democratic environment and facilities." The effects of socio-economic index and the language spoken at home were found significant on "Internal and external cultural features." The best predictor for the four factors was the socio-economic index. Based on these results, it is recommended that research efforts be expanded to Hispanics in other geographical areas, other levels within higher education and to students of other ethnic groups.

Koto, Isaac Semathane. "The influence of job requirements on the personal lives of planners in the Department of Land Affairs." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24023.

Full text
Abstract:
Work is a central activity in human lives and we cannot afford to talk about work and exclude employees, especially on how their personal lives are being influenced by the job requirements on daily basis. The work environments are ever changing due to a number of internal and external pressures. These changes result in adjustments of job requirements which in turn influence employees’ personal lives which constitute of the emotional, physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions. The nature and extent of the actual influence is depended of a number of factors like employee demographics, the business process of each job, employee perceptions about the requirements of their jobs and the actual job requirements demands. The goal of this study was to explore and describe the influence of the job-requirements on the personal lives of the Planners in the Department of Land Affairs. The objectives of this study were:
  • To conceptualise theoretically the influence of job requirements on the personal lives of employees.
  • To undertake an empirical study to investigate the influence of the specific job requirements on the personal lives of Planners in the Department of Land Affairs.
  • To draw conclusions and make recommendations to the Department of Land Affairs on how to address the needs of Planners and to formulate guidelines to enhance the Planners’ quality of life.
In the context of quantitative research, the researcher utilised applied research since this study was designed to offer practical solutions to problems experienced by the Department of Land Affairs on improving quality of life for Planners thus enhancing productivity. Group administered questionnaires were utilised as a data collection method and it was pilot tested with three employees at the National Office of the Department of Land Affairs who did not form part of the actual study. The population of the study was 51 and all of them completed the questionnaire. The results of the study showed that employees who were employed as Planners by the Department of Land Affairs at the Mpumalanga Regional Land Claims Commission, were exposed to job requirements which to a larger extent had a negative influence on certain dimensions of their personal lives. The goal of the study was achieved in that the researcher did not only manage to explore and describe the influence of the job requirements on the personal lives of the Planners in the Department of Land Affairs but also managed to give recommendations to the Department of Land Affairs on how to enhance quality of life of Planners. Abstract:

This essay is about personal assistance for persons with considerable intellectual disabilities.

The purpose with the study is: to examine personal assistance for individuals, who can`t speak

for themselves, to examine how the individuals can determine and get influence into their

assistance and how they can get help with it, to examine the role of an representative in

relation to the serviceuser´s assistance and examine if there are factors of gender in the

interviews.

The chosen method is qualitative interviews.

The interviews has been analysed through earlier research about personal assistance and

theoretical perspectives like: influence, integration and citizenship and discussed through

perspectives of social psychology.

The main conclusions are: the influence the serviceusers can have is through persons who

know them very well, the role of the representatives are indistinct, the serviceusers can´t

determine their assistance themselves and need help with it from relatives, representatives,

personal assistants and managers, the persons who know the serviceuser intimately are best to

transform the needs to assistance. The factors of gender, are that there are more men as

personal assistants than in the care of elderly, and the representatives are mostly men. The

personal assistants appreciates the time they have for the serviceuser, the work can be lonely

and demanding.

Abstract:
The quality of life depends on the happiness of the person. There are several factors that affect happiness and sometimes some help from personal assistance may be needed to achieve happiness levels.Recently, we have been able to read in daily press about how personal assistance is overused, it has increased in costs and that there is a lot of cheating on it. In addition to that, we have been able to read about individuals whose assistance compensation has been fully or partially withdrawn.Through a literature study, a so-called scoping study, this study studies what previous research says about experiences about quality of life and empowerment for people living with personal assistance. The purpose was also to see whether personal assistance affects the individual's quality of life. Can people with disabilities who are in need of support and help achieve the ten thresholds that Martha Nussbaum considers necessary to feel quality of life? The result shows that personal assistance has both pros and cons, but the benefits weigh heaviest and help the assistance users to an independent life. With the help of the help, users can, among other things, reach self-determination, get into work life and have the opportunity to family-run

Abstract:
Identity construction is an integral task during late adolescence. In this study, I argue that hip hop music contributes to the process of identity construction among female late adolescents. The contexts that the female late adolescent is exposed to affect her process of identity construction. These contexts include family, friends, peers, religion, and popular culture, among other things. Hip hop music forms part of present-day popular culture. Adolescents have access to this genre of music via the mass media and social networks. The aim of this study is to explore the nature of hip hop‘s contribution to the identity construction of female late adolescents in South Africa. To this end, I engaged seven female late adolescents in several research activities, which enabled them to make sense of their perceived identities in the context of hip hop music. I then interpreted the participants‘ stories, in order to understand the process by which hip hop had contributed to their sense of personal identity. The participants in this study were first-year students in the Faculty of Education, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, who were all in the developmental phase of late adolescence. Narrative inquiry and participatory research (PR) approaches were the preferred strategies of data generation. The data-generation techniques included the use of drawings and lyric inquiry. These techniques served to stimulate the generation of narrative data. They also provided frameworks within which the participants could engage with their sense of identity in the context of hip hop music. The research revealed that hip hop music does indeed contribute to the process of personal identity construction of the female late adolescents who participated in the study. It does so by compelling the adolescent to think about herself in relation to her continual self, which draws from her past, present, and future, her interactional self, both at the personal and social levels, and her situational self. The appeal of hip hop to her cognitive capabilities is enhanced through the strong link that hip hop has with her emotions. The significance of this study can be summarised in three points. Firstly, this study provides empirical evidence of hip hop as a meaningful resource for the female adolescent as she constructs her identity. As such, the findings of this study negate the public notion of hip hop as being a bad influence on young people, and provides proof of its significant role in the lives of South African female adolescents. Secondly, this study is important for education in South Africa. The significance of hip hop music in education settings lies in its fundamental communicative capabilities, which can be effectively utilised in the classroom situation. Thirdly, this study strengthens educational research in South Africa, especially research aimed at the liberation and emancipation of female adolescents in South Africa. In this regard, this study provides alternative methodologies of inquiry to conventional research strategies, such as questionnaires and surveys.

The twenty-first century is known as the e-generation. The access to information is no longer limited by time, regions and other factors, as the most updated and profes-sional information can be acquired through the Internet. However, extended or exces-sive use of Internet will bring negative influence upon various aspects of the user, in-cluding family, health etc, and increase the possibility of becoming an Internet addictive. There are many factors that lead to internet addiction and personality trait is one of the key factors. Studies combining the internal and external locus of control personality trait with Internet addiction are rare; therefore, this study attempts to combine the internal and external locus of control personality trait theory developed by Rotter (1954) with the factors that affect the Internet addiction to further analyze and discuss their multiple aspects and relations. Another key factor is the ease of Internet accessibility. According to Im’s study (2001), it was found that those with less than normal leisure hours would engage them-selves in Internet and video-gaming activities in a higher frequency. Therefore, this study performs the structural equation modeling (SEM) investigation on the personality trait, Internet use behavior, ease of Internet accessibility and Internet addiction in order to understand the relations among the variables in this research model. The study concludes that the senior aged users show more severe Internet addic-tion than young adults, and juveniles have a more severe Internet use behavior than the young adults. In the aspect of personality trait, the personality of the senior is more of an internal locus of control while that of the young adults is more external. In addition, the research model implemented in this study has excellent basic and overall model compatibility level, the modeling, and the internal qualities for explaining the relations among different variables, the positive relation between personality trait and Internet addiction, and the positive relation shown in Internet use behavior. The Internet use be-havior through the Intervening variable, the ease of Internet accessibility, gains maxi-mum overall influence upon Internet addiction.

Social Network Sites (SNSs) are more popular, people build the relationships with social media. More strong connections between individuals will form a cluster. Every cluster of centrality has key influencers in social network. The study starts from a concept about opinion leaders in two-steps-flow theories to explain the development of personal influence. We redefined the meanings about social influence and proposed a new academic word “Fanly”. The study conducted qualitative interviews with 11 online opinion leaders and 2 marketing experts, and collected the results from interviews to build up a primary measure for the scale. The research conducted questionnaires to online surveys and obtains 300 valid samples. By using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, we established a fanly scale with good reliability and validity. The study points out five constructs, including tie strength, homophily, content sustainability, and content readability. Moreover, twenty-one measuring items were identified. The study provides suggestions for the academic and management implications to build up a scale that marketers can follow the rules in doing the influencer marketing. The future research suggestions are provided as well.

Behind “e-mail“, “BBS”, “Instant Messenger”, weblog is regarded as the fourth kind of “killer application” of the Internet. Therefore, “weblog usage behavior” becomes a popular issue to study in not only industry but also academia. However, there is still not a complete framework to explain the motivation of blog usage and the influence factors. This research extends the ‘Attitudinal Belief Structure’ of ‘Theory of Planned Behavior’ and discusses which personal values among social value, utilitarian value, hedonic value and psychological value are the main motivations to use blog. In addition, we look into ‘past use’, ‘attachment styles’, ‘information recipients’ and ‘blog type’ deeply to find out which influence factors moderate the research model. This study used survey method to collect data from the Internet users and use PLS to analyze it. The result found the social value and psychological value are significant motivations among four personal values, and the influence of hedonic value is comparatively week. Then, the influence of personal value on blog usage intention is generally weaker among heavier users than among lighter users. Otherwise, psychological value influence people with preoccupied attachment style less. However, when the information recipients of blog trend to intimate friends, psychological value becomes more important. Finally, as types of blog are different, the influence of user’s psychological value on future usage intention will be different. In sum, we extend the ‘Attitudinal Belief Structure’ and renew it with social psychological theories to build a complete model. The research model can offer future study a framework to refer, and give weblog .com several marketing suggestions.
