Abstract:
This chapter argues that the extreme variability of schizophrenic phenotypes is a paradigmatic case study for explicating the dialectics between uncanny feelings of depersonalization/derealization and the attitude of the person who experiences them. Why do persons who suffer from these kinds of anomalous self-, body-, and world-experiences develop either a delusional form of schizophrenia or a ‘pauci-symptomatic’ type of this illness, or a schizotypal personality disorder? Why do delusions in people with schizophrenia take on so many different themes, and not only ontological ones, but also, for example, persecutory, hypochondriac, of reference, of agnition (filiation), external influence, etc.? If we subscribe to the ‘one root–many branches’ conceptualization of the manifold of schizophrenia, then we must be able to explain why, arising from the common root of self-disorders, schizophrenic phenotypes take on so many different features. A plausible answer is that self-disorder, being at the core of the vulnerability to schizophrenia, is refracted through the prism of the person’s background of values and beliefs that determine what things and events in the world mean for them. This personal background is a pre-reflective context of meaning and significance within which and against which persons understand themselves, others, and their world.

Laver, Michael, and Ernest Sergenti. A Baseline ABM of Party Competition. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691139036.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter specifies the “baseline” agent-based model of dynamic multiparty competition, which derives from an article published by (Laver 2005). This assumes that each voter has in mind some personal ideal “package” of policy positions and supports the political party that offers the policy package closest to this. The dynamic system at the heart of the model is as follows: voters support their “closest” party in this sense; party leaders adapt the policy packages they offer in light of the revealed pattern of voter support; voters reconsider which party they support in light of the revealed pattern of party policy packages; and this process continues forever. This recursive model describes policy-based party competition as a complex system, and the baseline model specifies three decision rules that party leaders may deploy when they choose party policy positions in such a setting. These rules are Sticker (always keep the same position), Aggregator (move policy to the centroid of the ideal policy positions of your current supporters), and Hunter (if your last policy move increased your support, make another move in the same direction; or else change heading and move in a different direction).

Knoll and, Benjamin R., and Cammie Jo Bolin. Support and Skepticism Regarding Women’s Ordination. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190882365.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on why some people support women’s ordination while others oppose it. It takes a deep dive into face-to-face personal narrative interviews to uncover the common themes and patterns of explanations that people give to justify their positions. It uncovers a few key themes that are common to individuals in a variety of religious traditions, including scriptural authority, personal experiences, and gender stereotypes about the gifts and talents that men and women possess. It is striking that despite interviewees’ reasons for supporting or opposing women’s ordination, many indicated they would gladly change their position if their congregation changed its policy. Middle-aged and older women, however, seem to have the most difficulty overall accepting women as pastors.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the process of progressive decentring of two partners taking part in a dialogue. Phenomenological unfolding is the taking of a third-person perspective on one’s own experiences. The hermeneutic moment consists in position-taking and perspective-taking with respect to one’s own experiences and their meanings. It requires the capacity to distance oneself from one’s own habits in interpreting and understanding the ‘facts’ of one’s own life, and to make of these very habits the object for reflection and for understanding. The psychodynamic moment consists in positing both phenomenological unfolding and hermeneutic analysis in a larger historical context, according great importance to the role of life events, of tradition and prejudice in the development of any form of habitus in interpreting one’s experiences, and of limit-situations in jeopardizing one’s defensive ‘housings’ and showing their vulnerability. This means acknowledging and accepting contingency as the necessity of one’s own story.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that Christian antitheatricalists could persuasively oppose pagan theater only by offering their faith as a superior but fundamentally similar substitute — starting with Tertullian's use ofpersona(the Latin term for a theater mask) to describe the multiple facets of a Trinitarian godhead. The patristic hermeneutics of prosopopoeia (or in Latin, fictio personae) likewise treated scripture explicitly as a drama in which God plays multiple roles. Medieval Christians went even further by staging the Bible and once again using masks as an indispensable theatrico-theological property; hence the common English Protestant position that Christian culture had devolved into little more than paganism by a different name. Ironically enough, early modern antitheatricalists constantly cited their patristic antecedents in order to demonstrate the theater's dangerous allegiance to polytheism — even as they once again implicitly positioned their "strictly scriptural" version of Christianity as the ultimate drama. By the time Sidney published hisDefense of Poesieit was in fact possible to argue that scripture itself had achieved such sublime effects onlyby means ofits quasi-theatrical impersonation of multiple sacred figures.

Abstract:
This book provides interested readers a very personal insight into the history of German pediatric surgery. The experiences and perspectives of 10 retired pediatric surgeons in former leadership positions are complied in personal interviews. A particularly interesting aspect of this book is the availability of the audio files of the interviews, which can be accessed via weblinks and QR-codes. This provides an impressive, intimate connection to the history of pediatric surgery in German-speaking countries since the second world war.
