ABSTRACTPersonal reference is the use of an expression to pick out a person, as in When did John eat the cookies? or Tell Dr. Elwood that I need to see him. This article explores the social factors involved in how speakers choose a referring expression in a given situation. Five experiments were conducted which presented speakers with scenarios and asked them how they would refer to a particular person in that situation. The results showed that speakers were sensitive to the level of intimacy between the speaker and referent, between the addressee and referent, and between a nonparticipating a

Grammar is constantly emergent as an aggregate whole of discourse tendencies that are present in language use between interlocutors, hence the notion ‘emergent grammar’ (Hopper 1987). These tendencies are formed by diverse discursive needs, including the need to signal politeness, which is assumed to be universal (Brown and Levinson 1987). This need is particularly important in Korean, in which politeness is highly grammaticalized, i.e., the politeness marking is not only a pragmatic but grammatical issue. Sen’s conception of work is closely connected to his theory of development which must/should be understood/meant not only in terms of economic growth, but also as the promotion of human progress and people’s living conditions. Human work is both an important functioning for personal realization and a fundamental means for acquiring greater capabilities and the capacity of agency, that allow to increase the space of life choices. Therefore unemployment as well as an economic problem is an offense to human dignity and an impoverishment of the social facet of life. Then we need policies that promove the whole spectrum of human capabilities: the reference object must be the empowerment of the worker rather than a particular workplace, according to a positive view of work.

Abstract:
Abstract A variety of meanings are applied to the terms happiness and wellbeing (H&W). The growing literature on H&W suffers much conceptual confusion, such as the jingle fallacy (that a single term means diverse things) and the jangle fallacy (that different words are used to refer to the same concept). The philosophy of H&W is old and aims at answering questions such as what makes a life go better or what it is for someone’s life to go well or badly. Three clusters of philosophical H&W theories have traditionally been identified: hedonistic theories claim that only pleasure net of pain (alternatively only positive affect minus negative affect) matters for a good life and that this mental state should be maximized. Satisfactionism or desire-fulfillment theories argue that a good life depends exclusively on getting whatever we want and that desire-fulfillment should be maximized. Objective list theories hold that some things are good for us, regardless of whether we, as individuals, like or want them. Other taxonomies have been added more recently, and there is much disagreement among philosophers about how H&W theories should be categorized and how their core concepts should be defined. The science of H&W is young, yet the field already offers a surprisingly high number of models and theories. The most frequently used term in H&W research is subjective wellbeing (SWB), which is sometimes defined as “all of the various types of evaluations people make of their lives.” SWB is also presented as a three-dimensional concept, comprising life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect. There is currently no consensus as to how the three components of SWB should be conceptualized. Despite these disagreements, the most frequently used measures of SWB are reliable, which means that they can be measured with relatively high precision. Controversies remain in regard to their validity, however. For an instrument to be valid, it must measure what it intends to measure. Until an agreement has been established about what indicators of SWB are intended to measure, their validity cannot be estimated. The term objective happiness was introduced by Kahneman. It refers to a combination of a logical set of rules about the relations between pleasure-like feelings as experienced moment by moment and a measurement procedure to capture those experiences. For Kahneman, the distinction between feelings as experienced here and now and feelings as they are remembered is important. He later came to acknowledge that it is not only what people feel that is valuable. What people want is important to them as well. Kahneman’s revised theory therefore added life satisfaction to his H&W theory. He articulated the difference between a feeling component and a life satisfaction component of H&W as one between being happy IN your life versus being happy WITH your life. It is critical for the study of H&W to clarify the distinction between subjectivity and objectivity. The question is about definitional ownership and asks who can decide if a person’s life goes well. Is it a personal decision or is it a cultural decision? Perhaps it is a combination of subjective and objective perspectives? With reference to Searle’s distinction between objective and subjective statements about things that exist ontologically, the chapter hypothesizes that scientific reasoning enables some objective norms about the goodness of a subjective mental state to be established.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter concerns Tat Ming Pair’s legacy as much as the more fundamental question of how to investigate legacy in pop music studies. The chapter title is not only an admittedly self-indulgent twist of a title of Tat Ming’s song “1+4=14”; it necessitates thinking on how to discuss the legacy of music practitioners in general. Shelving the titular reference to 2+2=5, the Orwellian dystopian caution of brainwashing and thought control, we are wondering how much Tats + Ming amounts to. 1+1=? Reminded of the “bias” of legacy studies, in which the effective is highlighted—in the sense of how the “man” and/or the “music” have effected into something, the legacy, we argue to pay attention to the emotional, what we will call the affective, side of any influence and impact any music practitioners may exert. We move our gaze towards cultural intermediaries, whose affinities with Tat Ming enable numerous afterlives and cultural translations of Tat Ming’s music and life. We invited eleven people to share with us; most of them are working in popular music, and a few in related fields of music and culture at large. We will first discuss Tat Ming’s legacy in terms of effect, of how Tat Ming as music makers have effected—entailed, enabled, brought about—cultural productions in music and wider cultural scenes. Tangibly, we observed how Tat Ming effected in them the very burgeoning of an interest, a passion, and a dedication to a career in music, as well as their own music and other creative works. Intangibly, we noted how Tat Ming left a yardstick for these later generations of music makers to evaluate their own music: Tat Ming’s impact on what counts as good pop—it has to be relevant and urgent, subtle and nuanced, honest and alternative. When we investigate their legacy in affective terms, these cultural intermediaries talk even more poignantly, passionately, and personally about the way they experience Tat Ming as persons. Their narratives could have resourced so much more, but we follow three protagonists: as good mentors, as good Hong Kongers, as good human beings.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter briefly introduces the humanistic theory of wellbeing (HTW), which suggests that a life is good to the extent that it allows us to perform our humanness well. More concretely, our humanness is well performed when three universal human needs are satisfied. They are the need for stability, the need for change, and the need to and for care. The term humanness is also embedded in a normative framework, referred to as basic humanistic values. The premise of the HTW is that all living organisms care about how they are faring in life. Many species also care about how others are faring. This fundamental ability to care originates in a valuation mechanism that constitutes the biological cornerstone of wellbeing. The valuation mechanism explains why and how humans evaluate their lives and the lives of those around them. Valuations operate in different forms; some are quick, automatized, and controlled by System 1 thinking. Others are reflective and controlled by System 2 thinking. The psychology of goodness and badness, including central concepts in positive psychology, is reviewed with regard to these valuation mechanisms. The normative study of values has traditionally been the business of philosophy, which often distinguishes between prudential goodness and moral goodness. Something is prudentially good if it is valuable for the person whose life it is, whereas something is morally good if respecting others is explicitly valued. The chapter asks whether this distinction is too rigid and based on a tradition that erroneously favors the rational and competitive rather than the relational and cooperative attributes of human nature. The HTW is a normative theory. With reference to feminist epistemologies, it argues that a value-based wellbeing theory can be justified by means of scientific reasoning. Basically, the argument draws on the insight that scientific hypotheses cannot be directly confirmed by empirical observations. It is not the relation between a fact and a hypothesis that determines whether the hypothesis is correct; it is background believes held about that relation. Just as epistemic values are scientifically grounded in a consensus about background assumptions, the HTW argues that a moral value also can be accepted as a scientific background assumption. Allowing for the use of normative statements, HTW equates wellbeing with a good life. Wellbeing can be further defined as to like one’s life for the right reasons. To like one’s life means that it feels good and is thought of as good by the person who lives it. The right reason part of the definition is the normative element. This implies that liking one’s life is not a justified indicator of wellbeing if it violates a few, universal, humanistic values. Three values are particularly important: respecting basic human rights, avoiding preventable harm, and accepting an ethics of care. Importantly, an activity need not be aimed at humanistic values to be good, but the activity must be consistent with them. A distinction is made between hedonic wellbeing (HWB) and eudaimonic wellbeing (EWB). HWB means to be well in the sense of spontaneously like one’s life and is associated with fulfilling the need for stability. One major indicator of HWB is harmony feelings such as pleasure, happiness, and tranquility; another is spontaneous life judgments such as life satisfaction and the presence of meaning in life. EWB means to be well in the sense of becoming a better human being and is associated with the need for change. A major indicator of EWB is opportunity feelings such as interest, engagement, immersion, and wonder; another is reflective judgments such as wisdom and morality. The concept of EWB further includes the notion of betterment orientations, having to do with a will to improve and perform salient life tasks with some perfection or elegance. Personal growth, searching for meaning in life, and a will to be a good human being are indicators of the betterment dimension. The need to and for care is feeding into both HWB and EWB.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter focuses on the semantic features of free personal pronouns in Malayo-Polynesian languages of South East Asia and their outliers (henceforth MPSEA). It follows the changes that they have undergone, taking Proto-Malayo-Polynesian pronouns as a reference point. It discusses their number, person and clusivity distinctions and their arrangement into paradigms as well as other pronominal features such as social register and the dual use of the historical 1pl.incl pronoun *kita. MPSEA pronoun systems show much uniformity and diachronic stability. They usually distinguish singular versus plural number. Dual, trial and quadral number also occurs, while some systems have lost the pronominal number distinction. In some languages the interplay between dual number and clusivity calls for a paradigmatic alignment involving a minimal versus augmented distinction rather than a singular versus plural one. It has also led to different historical interpretations of the dual inclusive pronoun. MPSEA languages generally distinguish 1st, 2nd and 3rd person and often have generic and reflexive pronouns. Loss of pronominal distinction and change of original referent also occur. The chapter also addresses status, formality and pronoun avoidance, pronominal use of proper names and of terms expressing kinship, profession, rank or ethnicity, and the source of some pronouns. Attention is given to ‘imposters’ (other categories used in place of pronouns) which in languages like Indonesian behave syntactically different from those in English, and to the need to abandon a rigid division of nominals into nouns and pronouns.

Abstract The manipulation of personal pronouns is not the only means by which an articulate black subject might stake out a political position relative to other persons of African descent. Powerful political statements can also be registered through the designatory terms by which individuals reference themselves and other black people. We have noted, for instance, the emergence in the late 1960s of the word black as the chosen designation for a nationalistically conscious intelligentsia; later, of course, the political resonances of the term would be diminished somewhat as it came into general use to refer to any and all persons of African ancestry. More recently, African-American has gained widespread usage, its supposed desirability over other available terms deriving from its vaunted capacity to signal such ancestry explicitly.

Abstract:
In this article, open personal reference in Finnish is studied on a corpus of extracts from three Finnish novels and their German translations. The aim is to find out how expressions creating open reference are used in Finnish prose, how they get translated into German and how the references are interpreted. The term open reference is used for expressions that imply a personal (human) referent without specifying it, so that the reference needs to be construed from the situational and/or textual context. The Finnish constructions with open reference studied here include the open 3rd person singular (“zero person”), the passive, verbs of necessity as well as regular person forms. A multi-method approach, complementing morphosyntactic analyses with framesemantic annotation and a readers’ survey, serves to combine insights on open reference from different angles. Frame semantics in the cognitive linguistics tradition of Charles Fillmore offers a framework to operationalize the role of contextual information and encyclopaedic knowledge for text comprehension and reference interpretation. The analyses show that the implied referents of Finnish passive constructions are typically AGENTS of volitional actions, while expressions with the open 3rd person singular tend to evoke frames of necessity and desirability. In the German texts, the generic pronoun man is used as a referential expression in almost half of all cases. It appears as a translation equivalent for both the Finnish passive and the open 3rd person singular, especially with referents fulfilling a semantic role other that AGENT, such as COGNIZER, as well as in modal contexts. The survey among Finnish native speakers indicates an overall high degree of agreement in the interpretation of references. Disagreement was found especially for examples containing the open 3rd person singular form, pointing at the duality of its referential potential, encompassing both an individual referent known from context and generic reference.

Abstract Terms like box and tube have become standard slang of the electronic age but “environment” is no television synonym, not even after forty years of television saturation in the United States. And no wonder, for the term both indicates a total surrounding and yet, in reference to television, leaves one at a loss to define or describe it. Those slang metaphors are so much easier to deal with, reinforcing the idea of television as an object, a thing occupying finite space, usually in one’s habitat. To call television a box or a tube, for instance, is to think of geometric solids, cones, or cubes of glass, metal, wood, and plastic relegated to a minor place in one’s personal or cultural space. But “environment” makes television the space itself, an encompassing surrounding. As a spatial configuration, television-as-environment is as bold as it is baffling, provocative but lacking ready reference and thus apt to leave one mentally as blank as the turned-off screen itself.

Abstract Some philosophical problems about agency can be put in terms of two points of view. From the personal point of view, an action is a person’s doing something for a reason, and her doing it is found intelligible when we know the reason that led her to it. From the impersonal point of view, an action would be a link in a causal chain that could be viewed without paying any attention to people, the links being understood by reference to the world’s causal workings. We might take it for granted that there are truths available to be discovered from each of these points of view. The problems about agency surface when we start to wonder whether the impersonal point of view does not threaten the personal one.

Abstract:
In recent years, the adoption of wearable gadgets such as Fitbit has revolutionized the way individuals track and monitor their personal activity data. These devices provide valuable in-sights into an individual’s physical activity levels, sleep patterns, and overall health metrics. Integrating this data into healthcare informatics systems can offer significant benefits in terms of personalized healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes. This paper explores the synergistic integration of Fitbit-generated personal activity data using the openEHR Reference Model in healthcare informatics as a practical case study in patient-generated health data (PGHD) integration based on health informatics standards as a framework for the representation and exchange of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). The synergistic integration of Fitbit-generated personal activity data through openEHR and FHIR standards models also covers the way for advanced analytics and population health management. By linking and analyzing data from various sources, including sensors and wearable devices, healthcare organizations can identify trends, patterns, and insights that can guide population health strategies, preventive care initiatives, and personalized treatment plans, in addition to aiding physicians in follow-up care.

Abstract Accurate monitoring of cathodic protection relies upon the proficiency of the test personnel and the proper operation of the required equipment. The equipment consists of properly insulated test leads, an electronic voltmeter with a known internal circuit resistance, and a reference electrode. The proper operation of each piece of equipment is critical to the accuracy of the cathodic protection test results. However, the reference electrode is not often suspected of being responsible for unexpected cathodic protection readings. This paper will provide background on the use of portable

Abstract This paper highlights the coordinated AC mitigation and cathodic protection strategy for a 167 mile (269 km) long high-pressure interstate natural gas pipeline. Ninety-five percent of the pipeline is located adjacent and parallel to high voltage AC power transmission lines ranging to 500 kV. Analyses and computer simulations during the front-end engineering design predicted that, without suitable mitigation, steady-state AC potentials (referenced to local earth) on the pipeline would easily exceed 100 V; AC coating stress and touch potentials approaching 12,000 V were predicted during
