Abstract:
This paper is a rather personalized account of research carried out over many years by a physicist exploring the basic mechanisms of friction and the general field of tribology. It indicates how side-tracks have often led to other rich pastures and reflects the sometimes fruitful unpredictability of scientific research. This paper records several such felicitous surprises emerging from studies of friction. These include the direct measurement of surface forces, the adhesion of elastomers in terms of surface energy and viscoelastic properties, the skid-resistant properties of tyres, diffusion in polymers and measurement at the molecular level of the shear properties of oriented layers of boundary lubricants. In all this work the author is conscious of the original initiatives of the late Professor Bowden and recognizes the major contributions made by research students and colleagues. He is also conscious of many elements of serendipity.

Open Journal Systems (OJS) is an open access, online manuscript management system developed by the Public Knowledge Project (https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/) that underpins the University of Leicester’s academic journal system. Initially released in 2001 OJS provides a complete and robust software solution that integrates and tracks all aspects of manuscript processing from the initial author paper submission, via dissemination of articles to peer reviewers, through to final online publication and indexing (Willinsky, 2005). This review will consider how OJS can be used to enhance teaching and learning through creating an authentic peer review process for students and will also offer some personal insights into the practicalities of using OJS from an Editor’s perspective.

Abstract:
In this essay, Feigenbaum examines heterosexism as it functions politically and interpersonally in her own experience. She loosely traces her analysis along the current political climate of the bans on same-sex marriages, using this discussion to introduce and illustrate how heterosexual dominance functions. The author aims throughout to clarify what heterosexism looks like “in action,” and she moves toward providing steps to recognize, name, interrupt, and counter heterosexist privilege.

Together they are writing a book entitled “Tuning Time: Histories of Sound and Speed.” The authors would like to thank the Epistemes of Modern Acoustics group at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Jason Camlot, Iben Have, Burç Kostem, and Shafeka Hashash. We write the history of aural speed-reading and time-stretching technology in two tracks, taking a cue from Annemarie Mol's The Body Multiple: Ontology in Medical Practice, with its “upper text” and “subtext” that invite readers “to invent a way of reading that works for them from scratch” (ix). In the spirit of the story that opens track 1, on the left, we decided to jimmy the format of the PMLA page. To differing degrees, each track provides context, describes events, raises questions, and applies analytic frames. Track 1 is our narration of a series of events recalled by Harvey Lauer to Mara Mills; the insights derive from his professional expertise and personal reading experiences. Track 2, on the right, does not benefit from the kind of omniscient sight known as hindsight; it reads alongside. Think of these tracks as an animated and mostly asynchronous conversation among people who care about instruments of sound and reading in distinct but similarly fanatical ways. Abstract:
This article considers the continuities afforded by digital platforms for reactivating the 1990s Transgender Nation politics, by providing a means to bond like-minded people into imagined nations cohered into an affective public. The media archeology approach facilitates the investigation into stylistic and conceptual continuities between the 1992 and 1994 Transgender Nation’s “direct action” and militant politics into cases of digital activism from 1995 until 2016. The article further tracks early queer and trans connection and discord into later digital incarnations. The author considers digital culture as a significant site for personal and group transformation, but finds in the touchstone activities of Transgender Day of Remembrance an imagined community styled by necropolitical attunements. Direct actions online are still fueled by contesting hostility to trans life, but the critique of transgender marginalization must also account for sexual and racial dynamics.

Abstract:
The issue of measuring the quality of higher pedagogical education is considered in the article, in particular in the process of training the future primary school teachers. The author studies the structure of the future teachers’ preparedness to use the means of electronic linguomethods in their professional activities through the system of the components of this personal phenomenon, the criteria for revealing each of them, the indicators for their being measured and the levels of their being formed. The theoretical investigation has shown that the structure of the professional growth of future pedagogues is mostly considered in the unity of the motivational, cognitive, operational and evaluating components. Defining and characterising these components in the structure of the preparedness of future primary school teacher to use the means of electronic linguomethods in the professional activities has given the author the opportunity to find out the overall component-level structure of this personal-professional formation, which helps to comprehensively measure the quality of its development in the primary school teachers education. As a result, this structure illustrates the interconnection and subordination of the components of preparedness (motivational-valuable, cognitive, operational-activity, projective); the criteria of their measurement (directedness and aspiration, knowledge, skills and abilities), the indicators of each criterion (professional-personal, acmeological, linguomethodic aspiration and others; theoretical and methodological, linguomethodic, projective-methodical and other knowledge; methodical, motivational and other skills and abilities); the levels of mastery of future primary education specialists preparedness to use the means of electronic linguomethods in their professional activities: intuitive-receptive, reproductive, productive, research-creative. Characterising the level of preparedness of future primary school teachers to use the means of electronic linguomethods in their professional activities as stages of developing the skills of work with the means of electronic linguomethods, the author also tracks the individual regularities of transition from one level to another during studying at the institution of higher education.

Abstract:
This article presents a review of research on social interaction that was conducted by the author, students, and colleagues, primarily at George Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University. The article traces the history and presents both successes and failures of our research in gaining information regarding the development of social interaction skills of handicapped (i.e., behaviorally disordered and mentally retarded) children. Several suggestions are made for future research and development areas. The article does not represent a comprehensive review, but rather a historical overview of a program of research conducted at Peabody. Each publication cited has incorporated related research from sources other than that completed at Peabody. In order to illustrate the progression of our program of research, the literature presented is consciously limited. The author presents this article as a personal perspective which should not necessarily be considered the perspective of other investigators involved in the research.

Abstract:
This essay provides a rationale of how Performance Analysis and Narrative Positioning within research on Physically Disabled Professionals’ Personal Narratives can provide insight into the role of the body in the analysis of professional narratives. Through analyzing the participants’ open-ended narratives as performances in which the narrators draw upon performativities to reconcile the absurdity associated with their deemed ‘unprofessional’ bodies legitimately occupying a professional space, the author traces the emergence of embodied professional heroes in four variations: the Super Hero, Warrior Hero, Tragic Hero, and Rogue Hero, each which illuminates the importance of the body in the construction of personal narratives of professionalism. In conclusion, the author calls for attention to the potential performance of the Anti Hero across personal narratives that emerge in unmarked bodies in order to attend the underlying performativities and discourses of power within all narratives of professionalism.

Hammad, Hayssam Mohammed Saber Abdallah. "Ownership and authorship in copyright law : a proposal to re-categorise works and a digital implementation." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/17636.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis argues that there is a pressure on the authorship concept since the emergence of collections of facts, anthologies, and adaptations of pre-existing works. These works were the reason that Judges offered various interpretations to authorship and originality, as some Judges lessened the requirement of originality to obtain copyrightability for these works and some raised it. This led to make the protection granted by copyright law to intellectual works vague and uncertain. This became apparent in conflicts in courts decisions on copyright subsistence in works. This subsequently led to confusion around the criteria of interpretation that should be adopted and the theory or justification that copyright law is founded upon. The thesis argues that this vagueness and uncertainty is related not to the authorship concept but to the failure of law to adapt to two separate natures of works, one including authorial, mental and personal contribution and the other only including manually skilful contribution. Those two kinds cannot be subject to same principles or justifications of protection. The inexistence of such differentiation in doctrine, judiciary and legislation led to the distortion of authorship and originality concepts in the attempts to reduce their interpretation to suit those works that actually miss authorial contribution. Alternatively, whole attention was paid to granting ownership to right holders of these works, which led to the prevalence of the ownership concept as being a necessity for the marketability of cultural works over the authorship concept. The thesis finds that this difference in nature can be uncovered by settling on a differentiation between two kinds of skills that are used in creating works: the mental skills, which are authorial skills, on the one side, and manual skills, which are the collecting, combining, performing or executing skills, on the other. Accordingly, this thesis proposes a categorisation of works, that of ‘high, low and non-authorship’ works, which relies on the nature of the works and elements of authorship in the work. The thesis finds that every category of works needs a separate criterion that can suit its nature and constituent authorship elements; also, the protection needs to be graded depending on the level of authorship in the work. This thesis suggests that such a legal proposition be implemented digitally in what it calls the ‘Digital Cultural National Gate’, which decides the category the work should belong to and the correspondent protection, and that through some questionnaires on the work the authorship elements can be recognised.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is that, from a postmodern archival theoretical perspective, investigate how two personal archives after famous authors Selma Lagerlöf and Astrid Lindgren are arranged, described and presented at KB, the National Library of Sweden. The thesis investigates what constructed image the collections presents, who the supposed user of the archives is, how the collections are accessible and their role as important sources within the humanities research. The study involved the collections digital archive presentations and four different texts that all discuss the archives. The method chosen was qualitative research methodology and critical discourse theory. The analysis included a study of the level of text, discursive practice and social practice. The results showed that specific usage of language and words have a vast impact on the construction of the narrative. Both postmodern archival theory and critical discourse theory enables the exposition of the relations of power and ideology that these discursive and social practices hold. This leads to the conclusion that the majority of knowledge are socially constructed and that archives holds power by promoting one narrative over another. In personal archives this also plays a big role in the construction of identity and in identity politics.

Fleutiaux, Johann. "Pour une réforme du statut de la copie privée en droit d’auteur." Thesis, Paris 2, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA020045.

Full text
Abstract:
The private copying’s faculty, admitted for a long time and contained in article L. 122-5 of the Code of Intellectual Property, is presented by the majority doctrine as an exception to copyright. It allows a person to duplicate a work for his personal use without having to seek the prior consent of the author and it is illustrated in two cases : the copy for his personal use made by the owner of a copy, which is easy to admit ; and the one made by a third party, including a borrower of the copy, which is also required. It is observed that private copying, because it does not make a communication to the public, must be considered as being outside the field of copyright, which finds here one of its limits. Recently, the legislature considered that, due to the evolution of the techniques, the private copy entailed a prejudice for the author. He has provided compensation to compensate him. Then, it was confined to the only copies of lawful source, while were reprimanded the copies of illicit source. But this penalty is poorly lived and little applied. And the lack of remuneration is unfair for the author. It would be good to remove the distinction between lawful and unlawful private copying. Compensation would then be extended to all private copies and the repression’s burden of unlawful private copying would be dispensed with. In the same time, it should be admitted that the author limits the number of private copies by contractual means, especially by using digital rights management, but without being able to totally prohibit this private copying’s faculty for the user

Abstract:
In this study I have met three authors in a dialogue seminar on their literary work. The discussion, starting from texts by Lacan and Socrates, revolved around the dichotomy of personal and private, and how to benefit from personal material in one’s literary work. The three authors reflected on the writer Karl Ove Knausgård and the photographer Sally Mann, who both are working with their own immediate family as a motif. In Knausgård, you can find a strong and self-dissecting writer persona as a medium of creating recognition in the readers mind. In Sally Mann the metaphorical dimensions of this family motifs transforms them to images of much more general relevance than their private settings. On the subject of truth and story I also reflect on the different approaches that the authors Primo Levi, Viktor Frankl and Imre Kertész have on their experiences of the Holocaust. Finally the importance and relevance of metaphors as a way of getting a touch of one’s own private material is starting to be investigated.<br>I det här arbetet har jag samlat tre författare i olika genrer till ett dialogseminarium om sin arbetsprocess.

"Differentiation: a journey to a repertoire of selves." Diss., 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1513.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation the author embarks on a journey of storying and re-storying her life. Autoethnographic evocative personal narratives are used as the method of presentation. Congruent with a postmodern stance, the text repositions the reader as a co-participant in dialogue. In this journey there is a move from a reductionistic understanding of "self" to an understanding of "self" as socially constructed, multiple and changing processes. The author's process of differentiation is embodied and informed by this changing view of "self" as part of, being informed by, shaping and being shaped by the conversations she co-creates in dialogical contexts. This means taking a double-sided, reflexive view of relationships and systems, opens a space for a flexible way of being and imparts sensitivity to the discourses she co-creates. This journey entails taking action that keeps a self-reflexive dialogue going, allowing for different voices to emerge and various encounters to become possible.<br>Psychology<br>M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Abstract:
AbstractAneurysms of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) are uncommon. The complex anatomy of PICA and its intimate relationships with medulla, lower cranial nerves, and jugular tubercle makes the surgical treatment of these aneurysms fascinating. The reported is study aimed at a critical review of the overall results of a personal series of PICA aneurysms, treated by the senior author, R. Galzio. Demographics, charts, videos, outcome, and follow-up of a cohort of PICA aneurysms managed in the last 10 years were retrospectively analyzed, focusing only upon those treated with microneurosurgery. Twenty-five patients, harboring a single aneurysm, were operated on. Fifteen aneurysms were ruptured. Nineteen were proximal, all of these being been treated through a far-lateral approach. Trans-condylar or trans-tubercular variants were rarely necessary and however reserved to peculiar cases. Twenty-three aneurysms underwent direct treatment consisting of clip ligation. At 6-month follow-up, 60% of patients had a modified Rankin Score (mRS) of 0–2. Given the high anatomical variability of both PICA and patients’ bony anatomy, a case-by-case meticulous preoperative imaging evaluation is mandatory for the choice of the most suitable and tailored surgical corridor which, in turn, is pivotal to achieve the best outcome.

This chapter encompasses a reflective autobiographic account of the principal investigator, Dr. Ware, that plumbs the depths of what it means to be an informal caregiver for a family member or loved one. The chapter traces her steps as a caregiver for her late mother and the joys of personal fulfillment (positive sense of social wellbeing) and occasional travails associated with an individual stepping in this role. The author uses the independent variables in the study (subjective wellbeing, self-efficacy, spirituality, social support, resilience, and leisure participation) as lenses to discuss a reflective account of her idiosyncratic experiences in the context of her own family.

Taking Ghostery’s rhetorical sum of “knowledge + control = privacy” as a conceptual starting point, this chapter draws on interviews with a selection of Ghostery users to explore their struggles for personal privacy in the context of algorithmic personalization. The author finds that Ghostery users’ negotiations with algorithmic personalization have implications in relation to autonomy, epistemic anxiety, and the protection—as well as potential “erosion”—of selfhood against data tracking.

Smalley, Anthony J. "Jorgen Lund: A Perspective on His Contributions to Modern Rotor Bearing Dynamics." In ASME 2001 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2001/vib-21368.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a perspective on the work of Dr. J. W. Lund, in the field of rotor-bearing dynamics. Dr. Lund died on November 16, 2000 — indisputably the father of modern rotor-dynamic analysis. The perspective is somewhat personalized, and supplemented by personal knowledge, coming from someone who has known Dr. Lund for over 30 years, who has benefited from the insights of Dr. Lund, and whose career has been measurably advanced as a result of Dr. Lund’s personal and public contributions. The paper traces what the author considers to be the most influential work of Dr. Lund, both in published journals, in the software which has shaped the design and problem solution for modern turbomachinery, and in data published in various manuals, government reports, and course notes. It addresses, in particular, his work in oil bearings, gas bearings, unbalance response of flexible rotors, stability of flexible rotors, squeeze-film dampers, rotor balancing, and modal testing of rotors. It provides a road map for those who would revisit the knowledge base, which has shaped the design of high performance turbomachinery for industrial applications. It shows how the work of Dr. Lund has permeated the practice of today’s suppliers of turbomachinery, the users of turbomachinery, and the consultants to the industry. Some of the publications addressed specifically by the paper are the report volumes on rotor-dynamics prepared under contract by MTI, authored by Dr. Lund, and sponsored by the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1960’s, the RPI-MTI short course notes on gas bearings, software documentation, and major papers.

Golovko, Khrystyna. TRAVEL REPORT BY ALEKSANDER JANTA-POŁCZYNSKI «INTO THE USSR» (1932): FROG PERSPECTIVE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11091.

Abstract:
The article analyzes a series of materials by Aleksander Janta-Polczynski «Into the USSR» from Soviet Russia during the in 1932, published on «Wiadomości Literackiе». The purpose of this article is explain the uniqueness of the reporter’s style and personality. We want to emphasize the role of Janta-Polczynski as the pioneer of reportage journalism. He was the first who worked professionally in this position in the full sense of this word. Analyzed the cycle of Alexander Janta-Polczynski from Russia, we can emphasize the scale of the reporter’s trip: in 1932 the journalist made the largest journalistic trip to the USSR. Janta visited the Eastern republics, which differed from the popular Moscow and Leningrad. Also, he saw the largest construction in the USSR at this time – which it bragged about russian newspapers – Magnitogorsk and Dneprostroy. For a better understanding are given the visual examples from reportorial texts. It should be noted that for Janta the main task of the reporter is to show what is seen and recorded: only facts and personal experience in communication. This cycle can safely be called a journey and social expedition. The main task for Janta the scene where the reportage takes place is to find proper characters and convince them of the importance of their story. These are the materials of a reporter – an eyewitness, not a researcher, a report from the scene, which pushes the reader to an independent conclusion. We explore that all the Janta-Polczynski texts are inextricably linked by looking into the «middle» of the process: the diversity of what is seen allows the journalist to look for differences and similarities, compare, look at the fundamental components, track changes and distinguish them. Special attention was paid to a low-angle shot in his materials. He describes how Soviet society lives, how factories work, how the system of educating a Soviet person, goes to the movies and exhibitions, communicates with ordinary citizens. Undoubtedly, all this is successfully complemented by the factual detail and uniqueness of the author’s style.

Rahai, Hamid, and Jeremy Bonifacio. Numerical Investigations of Virus Transport Aboard a Commuter Bus. Mineta Transportation Institute, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.2048.

Full text
Abstract:
The authors performed unsteady numerical simulations of virus/particle transport released from a hypothetical passenger aboard a commuter bus. The bus model was sized according to a typical city bus used to transport passengers within the city of Long Beach in California. The simulations were performed for the bus in transit and when the bus was at a bus stop opening the middle doors for 30 seconds for passenger boarding and drop off. The infected passenger was sitting in an aisle seat in the middle of the bus, releasing 1267 particles (viruses)/min. The bus ventilation system released air from two linear slots in the ceiling at 2097 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and the air was exhausted at the back of the bus. Results indicated high exposure for passengers sitting behind the infectious during the bus transit. With air exchange outside during the bus stop, particles were spread to seats in front of the infectious passenger, thus increasing the risk of infection for the passengers sitting in front of the infectious person. With higher exposure time, the risk of infection is increased. One of the most important factors in assessing infection risk of respiratory diseases is the spatial distribution of the airborne pathogens. The deposition of the particles/viruses within the human respiratory system depends on the size, shape, and weight of the virus, the morphology of the respiratory tract, as well as the subject’s breathing pattern. For the current investigation, the viruses are modeled as solid particles of fixed size. While the results provide details of particles transport within a bus along with the probable risk of infection for a short duration, however, these results should be taken as preliminary as there are other significant factors such as the virus’s survival rate, the size distribution of the virus, and the space ventilation rate and mixing that contribute to the risk of infection and have not been taken into account in this investigation.

Styugina, Anastasia. Internet game "Sign me up as an astronaut" for the formation of the social and psychological experience of younger adolescents with disabilities by means of game psychocorrection. Science and Innovation Center Publishing House, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12731/sign_me_up_as_an_astronaut.

Full text
Abstract:
In the practice of a teacher-psychologist at the School of Distance Education, the game “Sign me up as an astronaut”, developed by the author, was tested, aimed at developing the skills of social and psychological interaction in younger adolescents with disabilities through the awareness and strengthening of personal resources by means of game psychocorrection. The specifics of the work of a psychologist at the School of Distance Education are determined by the following circumstances: - students have a severe disability and the corresponding psychophysical characteristics: instability of the emotional-volitional sphere, lack of motivation, severe physical and mental fatigue, low level of social skills, etc. - the use of distance educational technologies in psychocorrectional work; - lack of methodological recommendations for psychocorrectional work in conditions of distance technologies with school-age children. Such recommendations are available mainly for adults, they relate to the educational process, but they do not cover the correctional process. There is enough scientific and methodological literature on psychological and pedagogical correction, which is the basis for ensuring the work of a practicing psychologist, but there are difficulties in transferring these techniques, games, etc. - to the remote mode of correctional and developmental work, especially in the form of group work. During the game, various social and psychological situations are solved, which are selected strictly according to the characteristics of the social experience of the participants.
