Abstract:
Animal personality has been studied for decades, and a recent renaissance in the field has revealed links to health and life outcomes that echo those found in humans. Some of this research is tied to the Five Factor Model—the predominant model of human personality—which informs animal personality research as well, and allows for comparative work that points to evolutionary pathways that delineate phylogenetic continuity. From personality facets and traits to factors, this work has implications for human and nonhuman animal genetics, life history strategies, survival, and well-being, as well as development and social relationships. Working together, scientists from a variety of fields who study personality can hope to puzzle out causality, use personality as a tool for health, and simply define personality, across species, and therefore evolutionary time.

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the controversial issue of personality disorder, whether these are meaningful diagnoses and, if so, how they affect management. The classification is entirely pragmatic: the definitions and classification in both ICD-10 and DSM-V are outlined along with proposals to abandon categories in favour of a dimensional approach. The issue of treatability is explored, but we conclude that ignoring personality and personality disorders is not a viable alternative for outreach workers. Most of the chapter deals with the management of dissocial personality disorder (usually in men) and borderline personality disorder (usually in women). Specific psychotherapies are not dealt with here; the focus is on how to use team work to manage individuals with severe mental illness and disorders of personality.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of theory and research addressing temperament and personality, particularly as these are relevant to clinical applications. Our review begins with a brief history of influential frameworks and foundational constructs, including aspects they share in common and others engendering disagreement. Measurement approaches, development of temperament/personality, the biological underpinnings, and studies addressing cross-cultural and gender differences, are also noted in this review. The chapter concludes with problems in adaptation associated with temperament, focusing on ameliorating those difficulties through clinical applications of temperament and personality constructs with children and adults. Importantly, a developmental, empirically focused perspective informed this chapter, and as a result, this work includes references to developmental periods from early childhood to adulthood, emphasizing approaches that have received empirical support.
