Full textThe working life gets more and more boundaryless, the line between private and working life is blurred out and at the same time the sick leave for stress increases. Can personality traits predict perceived stress and well-being? It could be applied to the workplace and contribute to a more healthy life style. Perceived stress scale is the most used questionnaire for stress, the well-being form shows excellent reliability and good validity. Within personality theories, the big five Inventory model (neuroticism, extraversion, openness, kindness and conscientiousness) represents the traits of personality. According to previous research, neuroticism been predicted as a stress factor. Four hypotheses were tested and the purpose of the study was to predict how different personality traits can affect well-being and the tendency to experience stress. The study involved 1545 participants between 18-71 years old in Sweden. Correlation analyzes and multiple regression analyzes were performed. The question is supported in the study, personality traits can predict perceived stress and well-being. There was a clear correlation between the variables stress and all personality dimensions.

Full textIndividual differences in choosing coping strategies are an important part of stress management, thereby affecting the risk of health problems related to stress in the long run. The purpose of this study was the prediction of coping strategies from personality and adult attachment and the examination of correlations between coping and adult attachment. 174 adult participants (men = 40) in the ages between 19 and 83 answered a survey comprised of the Big Five Inventory (BFI), Experiences of Close Relationships (ECR) and Brief COPE. BFI measures personality according to the five-factor model. ECR measures attachment according to the two dimensions of avoidant and anxious attachment. Brief COPE measures coping according to 14 subscales which may be divided into problem-focused, emotion-focused, and dysfunctional (avoidance) coping. Results regarding correlations show that there is a negative correlation between avoidant attachment and agreeableness, extraversion, and conscientiousness. There was a positive correlation between avoidant attachment and neuroticism. No significant correlation between attachment and openness was found. Multiple regression analyses show that extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and avoidant attachment predicted problem-focused coping. Neuroticism and extraversion predicted emotion-focused coping. Social support was predicted by extraversion and avoidant attachment. Neuroticism predicted self-blame. Dysfunctional coping was predicted by neuroticism and anxious attachment. Together, personality and attachment predicted problem-focused and dysfunctional coping, as well as social support. Attachment added unique variance compared to personality alone. However, even though significant, the unique variance contributed by attachment was relatively small.

Full textPrevious studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between the body mass of an organism, activity level and metabolism (metabolic rate, MR) where a higher body mass and activity level correlate with a higher MR. How is it then with an organism's personality and its MR; does the type of personality of the organism play a part in its MR? To test the prediction that a more active personality, such as boldness, would show a higher value of MR in comparison to a more inactive personality, such as shyness, personality, standard metabolic rate (SMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and aerobic scope (MMR-SMR) were compared for the invasive fish species round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) sampled from Guldborgsund in the Western Baltic. In total, about 400 round goby were captured, of which 19 individuals underwent the entire study. Personality was assessed by two different experiments, scototaxis and boldness, where the individuals then were divided into the personality groups bold and shy. SMR, MMR and aerobic scope were analyzed by respirometry. There was a significant difference in SMR between the two types of personality (bold and shy), which also has been found in previous studies (Toscano & Monacos, 2015). There were no significant differences between either MMR, aerobic scope or weight between bold and shy fish. In conclusion, the significant difference in SMR between bold and shy fishes, was probably based on the fact that individuals with a higher proportion of boldness had a higher energy consumption to compensate for the phenotypic benefits (such as higher and easier dispersibility) compared to individuals with less boldness. However, further studies on round goby would have to be performed to investigate whether there is a connection between boldness and a higher dispersibility.

Full textEvery year about 3.5 million personality profiles are made with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ®, MBTI ®. This should make the instrument one of the most widely used psychological tests in the world and it means that a lot of people get a description of their personality type that can be used in different ways. Some studies, for example by Carlyn, suggest that the MBTI is a reliable instrument, but there are also studies, for example by Pittenger, that claim otherwise. James Michael says that MBTI alone give an incomplete assessment of a leader's behavior. Perhaps it is wise to complete the MBTI with other test instruments to get a more complete profile of an individual.A model that could complement MBTI is Self-Determination Theory, SDT, and the related sub theory General Causality Orientation, GCO. This study compares MBTI with GCO and the results indicate that autonomy orientation in GCO has no causality with MBTI whereas controlled orientation and impersonal orientation has some overlapping. The conclusion is that the two models measure different aspects of personality and therefore they can complement each other.

Full textIt has become more and more common to visit different kinds of events as a way to glorify the everyday life. Usually, it is only a few people working with planning an event, but to get a successful result more staff is required, and in many cases these are consisting by volunteers. Since these people are helping without any monetary compensation, it can be hard to keep the volunteers motivated, which can be a devastating consequence for the event. Therefore, it is very much in the interest of the arrangers to keep the motivation high throughout the whole event. In this study it has been examined what differs the different personality types when it comes to motivation. By letting a number of students fill out a personality test which was based on The Big Five model and then letting 14 of them go through an interview, a clearer picture has been formed about how different individuals are getting motivated the best way. When the interviews had been analyzed through two different personality models and two motivation theories, some differences have been found. This study has found some relationships between which personality the respondent has been classified as and what they consider themselves to be motivated by. Some findings have been expected while others have been more surprising.

Full textComputer game related problems are an escalating problem that has been shown to affect many young people's development and well-being. The purpose of this study was to investigate young people's computer game problems, the consequences of excessive computer game playing and the treatment that is given to young people with computer game related problems. The empirical data were obtained through interviews with professionals who work with this type of problem in the institutions Game Over and Theory in Action. The results showed that computer game related problems do not today have a specific definition, as well as it is a problem that is not sufficiently recognized. The view of the causes of young people’s computer game related problems is complex as it may be caused by many different factors. The consequences of a problematic computer game playing are many and serious, which can affect a young person's entire life situation. Treatment of young people with computer game related problems have been shown to occur in various ways with different starting points depending on what you believe is the cause of the problem.

Full textStudien är en begreppsvalidering av personlighetsformuläret Pers Q som utgår från ”Big Five”-teorin. Pers Q relaterades till ett etablerat personlighetsinstrument, CTI, som utgår från Jungs personlighetstypologi. Vidare undersöktes om det i Pers Q dimensionerna fanns förväntade könsskillnader samt förväntade samband med generell intelligens. Data samlades in från sökande till officersutbildning (N=552 varav 58 kvinnor) och analyserades genom korrelationer, regressionsanalyser samt t-test. Resultatet indikerade att Pers Q mäter delar av CTI vilket delvis kan förklaras av testens teoretiska perspektiv. Vidare visar studien att de skillnader och samband som undersöktes inte fullständigt överensstämmer med de förväntade. För att säkerställa Pers Q dimensionernas egenskaper behöver fler studier utföras enär begreppsvaliditet bör uppfyllas i en serie av prövningar.

Full textIn the research of this study we found a gap regarding information on how to adapt leadershipto employees of various personalities. Our purpose was now to fill that research gap. In ourstudy on personality-adapted leadership, we found that all kinds of personalities have variouspreferences to be led. Using two different personality classification models, theories ofleadership and motivation as well as empirical evidence drawn from Business leaders, wehave studied which kind of leadership that works best for models of different personalitytypes. With the help of a cross-section design, qualitative methods together with semistructuredinterviews we were able to combine the theories we used with the empiricalevidence. Accordingly, our purpose is to acknowledge how leadership can be adapted todifferent personalities to achieve the greatest opportunity for the development of theirmotivation. This is a contributing factor to the development of a company and shouldtherefore be in the leader’s interest.As a conclusion our study shows how different personalities demand certain kinds ofleadership, that they get motivated by a wide range of factors and that various situations canhave a big effect where a certain leadership is most suitable. The result of our study has led totwo tables based on the personality classification models, which show which leadershiptheory fits the different kinds of personality types. The study also shows that leaders shouldadapt a relationship-oriented leadership and complement it with a task-oriented one in order tofind their employees motivation and be able to lead them in a successful way.

Full textKvinnor är en extra utsatt grupp när det kommer till viktimisering i samband med alkoholkonsumtion. Fortsättningsvis, vissa personlighetsdrag och karaktärsdrag har visats påverka alkoholkonsumtion. Tidigare forskning gällande Big-Five-teorin och dess personlighetsdrag indikerar vanligtvis högre nivåer av alkoholkonsumtion om en person skattar högre inom dragen “Utåtriktning” och “Känslomässig instabilitet”, eller skattar lägre inom dragen “Vänlighet” och “Målmedvetenhet”. Gällande kvinnor, draget “Öppenhet” verkar vara det enda som är kopplat till alkoholkonsumtion, men tidigare forskning är begränsad. Huvudfokuset inom tidigare forskning har varit på Big-Five-teorin, människor överlag och alkoholkonsumtion, vi ville därmed specifikt undersöka kvinnliga vanor. Vårt fokus har legat på svenska kvinnor i åldrarna 18- 50 år. Vi menade att personlighetsdrag kunde ha en påverkan på alkoholkonsumtion och ville undersöka specifikt kvinnor vad gäller detta då befintlig forskning ansågs bristfällig. Resultatet visade att olika personlighetsdrag påverkar alkoholkonsumtionen hos kvinnor. Sammanfattningsvis, kvinnor tenderar att dricka mer alkohol om de skattar högt inom “Utåtriktning” och “Känslomässig instabilitet”, och om de skattar lågt inom “Vänlighet” och “Målmedvetenhet”, vilket skulle kunna innebära att olika personlighetsdrag fungerar som riskfaktorer för alkoholkonsumtion. Dock visade “Öppenhet” inte på något samband med alkoholkonsumtion. Framtida forskning bör undersöka hur eventuellt andra faktorer kombinerat med personlighetsdrag kan ha en effekt på alkoholkonsumtion.
