Full textAlthough it is well known that teachers play a key role in the academic success of students, it remains unclear how teaching quality is operationalized and assessed within teachers’ selection practices. This Master thesis identifies the knowledges (K), skills (S), abilities (A) and other characteristics (O) that are sought-after when recruiting a new primary or secondary level teacher as well as the instruments that are favored to assess these characteristics. A human resources representative from 20 French School Districts (Commissions scolaires) from Quebec answered a questionnaire designed for this study. Results show that School districts have multiple requirements when selecting a teacher but that they particularly value knowledge of classroom management strategies, subject matter knowledge, oral communication, pedagogical skills and classroom management skills. The classic interview appears among the instruments that are most frequently used for teachers’ selection. The most valid selection instruments, however, seem to be scarcely used. Correlations reveal a significant relation between the recruiter’s perceptions of his/her use of the most valid selection instruments and those that they actually use. Discussion focuses on the ways School districts can improve the selection of teachers, considering recommended practices emerging from the personnel selection literature. The opportunity to consider some requirements of the School districts as competences to be further developed through professional supervision and continuous training is also discussed. Keywords: teacher selection, teaching quality, exigencies, selection instruments, professional development.

Full textThis study aims to verify the existence of positive impacts in terms of human capital, such as the acquisition of knowledge and entrepreneurship, among Mexican workers enrolled in the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program in the province of Quebec. To do this, 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals working on Île d'Orléans and in the municipalities of Saint -Augustin-de-Desmaures, Saint-Apollinaire and L’Assomption. A categorization of the experiences according to the degree of capacity building was carried out considering the state of origin, the number of trips to Canada with the SAWP, the acquisition of knowledge and its application, land ownership, the pursuit of projects and the interest to remain in the SAWP. Categories that have resulted are the survival experience, the supplementary experience, the wished entrepreneurial experience and the established entrepreneurial experience. Investigations have shown that there are benefits in several cases with these seasonal migrations.

Full textLarge-scale planning and development projects are more and more contested in Quebec. Out of all these projects, those of the energy sector occupy a distinctive place. Due to their size and their reach, energy projects are particularly sensitive. They convey economic growth and social progress, but also disturbances and risks. As such, they engender competing discourses, antagonistic representations and contradictory interests. Only yesterday, these large-scale projects were the object of consensus and nourished collective imaginaries. Today, they generate feats of strength and suspiciousness. Over the past few years, a number of these projects have been contested. One of the latest ones is the development project of the shale gas industry. It is this project that we are addressing in this masters thesis. We propose that representations of risks, carried by the actors, are decisive in this conflict. Similarly to research endeavors led by the school of geography, our thesis consists of showing that the analysis of representations is an indispensable tool in the geopolitical analysis of planning and development projects in Quebec. It allows us to understand territorial relations and especially to understand the nature of the encountered rivalries. We ask ourselves : what is the influence of representations of risks on the positioning of actors ? Aided by Philippe Subra’s work, we study this case through a qualitative and multime thodological approach combining territorial observations, interviews with actors and mental cartography. In summary, our data, which resulted from our empirical approach, enabled us to conclude that antagonistic representations of risks influence the positioning of actors; whilst there also exists, in the conflict’s deployment, a dialectical relationship between these two terms.

Full textOur study focuses on describing and understanding the negotiation of meaning (Wenger, 2005) as it unfolded among members of a team from the Ministère de l'Éducation, des loisirs et du sport (MELS), who adopted the community of practice model of professional development. This community was in charge of implementing the action plan for improving the quality of French. It provided training and support for teachers of primary- and secondary-school French in Quebec. The data-gathering process took place over a period of four years. Ethnography-based methodology emphasized distance participant observation, meaning being present while the community carried out its work, and note-taking. An analysis of the community’s working documents (including the written record of an electronic forum), the conducting of interviews, and the administering of a survey were the other elements that completed the data-gathering process used throughout. A cross-sectional analysis of the data gathered made it possible to sort out and highlight more clearly the key processes and point to the specific purposes that the negotiation of meaning espoused in context. We then drew from this analysis the components of the professional-development program that the community devoted its energies to constructing.

Full textCONTEXT. Neglect is the most common form of maltreatment in children under 6 years of age. Given the lack of warm, well-adjusted parent-child interactions that characterizes it, this context of adversity greatly compromises their development, particularly language. Their language difficulties, found in research in an English-speaking context, are manifested mainly in the morphosyntactic component of language. However, the morpshosyntactic development of French-speaking neglected children remains unknown, hence the interest of conducting work in this language. In addition to deepening our understanding of the challenges of developing the morphosyntactic component, it is essential to focus on the educational contexts in which neglected children evolve and that are likely to have a positive influence on their language skills, particularly early childhood educations (ECE) settings. More specifically, the quality of the interactions in the group is the component of ECE that is most strongly associated with language. AIMS. The thesis aims to 1- describe the level of morphosyntactic development of neglected children aged 4 years and compare it to that of non-neglected peers; 2- to quantify the prevalence of morphosyntactic difficulties (MD) in neglected children, approximated by the mean length of utterances in morphemes (MLUm); and 3- to study the relationship between the quality of interactions in the group in ECE settings and the presence of MD in these children. METHODS. A sample of 136 children, including 44 neglected children, was recruted. A spontaneous language sample was collected using semi-structured standardized play to measure the participants' level of morphosyntactic development. The analysis was performed using the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts software. A sub-sample of 18 neglected children who attended an ECE setting was then created. The quality of interactions was estimated by the Classroom Assessment Scoring System Pre-K. RESULTS. Neglected children have a level of development of MLUm up to seven times lower than their non-neglected peers. Their MDs also translate into less frequent verbal inflections and more frequent word omissions. The results suggest trends between four dimensions of the quality of interactions in the group and the MLUm of neglected children with MDs, two positive and two negative. CONCLUSION. The results confirm for the first time the great MDs of French-speaking neglected children. The innovative aspect of the thesis is also reflected in the demonstration of a relationship between the quality of interactions in the ECE setting and the morphosyntactic skills of neglected children with MDs. The findings from this study illustrate, particularly through the high prevalence of MD, the high need for individual services in speech-language therapy for neglected children. The results also argue for support to maintain and improve the level of quality of interactions in the ECEs attended by neglected children.

Full textIn recent years, religious communities in Quebec have been experiencing changes as a result of the decline and aging of their members. As a result, there are attempts to protect and enhance the communities’ heritage. This thesis focuses on the process of requalification of convent properties and their patrimonialization, in the perspective of urban planning, through an archeology of representations. The thesis examines patrimonialization and planning processes that took place between 1964 and 2016 on the main estates of the Sillery Heritage Site, located in Quebec City, Canada. It traces and analyzes interpretations associated with representations of these communities and their use in discourses and planning practices.

Full textSome of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are related to land and natural resources, they are so connected to surveyors profession. However, current knowledge does not allow us to identify whether the professional actions of land surveyors are consistent with these objectives. In this context, we raise the problem of knowing whether land surveyors contribute to sustainable development. In fact, we want to know if the Quebec land surveyors in their daily tasks take actions that contribute to sustainable development. We hypothesize that Quebec land surveyors take little actions that promote sustainable development, specifically the environmental issues defined in the BNQ 21000 standard and this is in part because they don’t know the definition of sustainable development and are not sensitive to it. To answer our questions, we performed a survey among land surveyors of Quebec. According to the OAGQ's 2016-2017 annual report, there are 1059 land surveyors as of March 31, 2017. Almost 20% of them responded to the survey and the majority seems very sensitive to sustainable development. In addition, their knowledge of sustainable development is medium but the environmental actions taken are low. Sensitivity and knowledge are therefore not the factors that justify the low level of the environmental actions.

Full textThe value of forest products from softwood stands depends on stems volume and taper, internal defects, but also on physical and mechanical wood properties, especially stiffness, since softwood lumber is primarily used for structural purposes. The lumber stiffness is evaluated in sawmills through visual or mechanical gradings. In forest, this knowledge does not exist and it is not possible to locate the regions or the forest stands with a high lumber stiffness, neither to evaluate the value of forest products and the economic profitability of forest management scenarios considering this key attribute. This lack of knowledge is mainly due to substantial investments associated with an inventory of wood fibre quality, which involves the sampling of thousands of trees and very demanding laboratory tests. It is in this context that the near-infrared spectroscopy was evaluated as a rapid, non-destructive method for estimating physical and mechanical wood properties. Ecogeographic variation in black spruce clear wood properties was first investigated for the two main vegetation types of the managed boreal forest of the province of Quebec (chapter 1). Wood growing in pure black spruce stands had longer mature fibers, a significantly denser wood with better mechanical characteristics than the wood growing in stands mixed with balsam fir. A scaling-up modeling approach, based on ring data from 3,350 inventory plots, has improved the performance of all models, explaining, at the stand level, 47%, 57%, 63% and 63% of variance in wood density, modulus of elasticity, microfibril angle and mature fiber length with estimated root mean square errors of 8.9 kg/m³, 0.52 GPa, 0.60° and 0.06 mm respectively. The potential of near-infrared spectroscopy to determine the transition from juvenile to mature wood in black spruce was then assessed (chapter 2). Good to excellent calibration statistics (R², ratio of performance to deviation) were obtained for basic density (0.85, 1.8), microfibril angle (0.79, 2.2), and modulus of elasticity (0.88, 2.9). Two-segment linear regressions were applied to microfibril angle profiles to determine the transition age. The values obtained using SilviScan data were compared with those obtained using near-infrared spectroscopy predicted data. The average transition age (23 years ± 7 years) was slightly underestimated by near-infrared spectroscopy with a mean prediction error (and 95% limits of agreement) of -2.2 ± 6.3 years (-14.6/10.1). These results suggest that the transition age from juvenile to mature wood could be predicted by near-infrared spectroscopy. Finally, the near-infrared spectroscopy was used for estimating the regional variation in wood density and stiffness for the main boreal species of Quebec (black spruce, balsam fir, jack pine, paper birch, trembling aspen) (chapter 3). An automated near-infrared system was developed for this purpose and calibrated using SilviScan data. Basic density and wood stiffness were estimated on 30,159 increment cores from 10,573 inventory plots. The observations in wood density and stiffness were spatially autocorrelated on longer distances in hardwoods than softwoods. A uniform latitudinal gradient related to climate was observed in paper birch and trembling aspen. Conversely, spatial distribution in wood density and modulus of elasticity was not uniform in softwoods, suggesting a more limited environmental adaptability in comparison to the hardwood species studied. This thesis has made major advances in the development of a method for inventorying wood fibre quality in Quebec. Regional variation in wood density and stiffness is now known for the main boreal species of Quebec. Future work will focus on estimating these properties at the forest stand level.

Full textIn 2003, public health authorities of the Province of Quebec, Canada, published their first national public health program in which a strategy known as the “Support for the development of communities” was included. In order to enrich the knowledge on the implementation of the strategy and its influence on the practice of the professionals mandated to update same, community organizers from the local Health and Social Services Centers, this thesis had three main objectives which were investigated through three different research processes. The first part had for objective to study a community development process. An ethnographic study revealed the complexity of the strategy, underlined the role of the socio-cultural and historic factors and targeted elements to be considered for practice. It also highlighted the importance to adopt a health equity perspective. The second part aimed at describing how the strategy influenced community organizing practices. The analysis of a reflexive practice group, composed of community organizers, helped identify key challenges related to the strategy: the need to clarify the role of community organizers in community development, the difficulties to stimulate and support citizen participation and finally the difficulties associated with this function within the organizational context of Health and Social Services Centres. Finally, the third part sought to identify favourable and unfavourable elements to the integration of the strategy in the practice of community organizers and the organizations that employ them. In addition to the interviews realised in the ethnographic study and the reflexive practice group, nine semi-structured interviews with key actors were realised. The participants indicated that the strategy brings a paradigm shift in favour of health equity, which cannot be achieved without important changes to professional and organizational practices. This thesis has thus contributed to provide new knowledge on the development of communities for the field of public health and the results indicate that it still has to be refined and that its implementation could be improved. In this regard, a heuristic model to generate a conversation between community organizers and public health practitioners, is offered in conclusion.

Full textSaffron is an autumn crocus that produces a highly valuable spice. Several saffron farms have been established over recent years in the province of Quebec. However, the edaphic and climatic conditions differ considerably compared to the countries of origin of the crop, which led us to test several aspects that could influence the saffron yield, including planting depth and planting period as well as the application of a combination of fertilizers, mycorrhizal fungi and biostimulants at planting. Since temperature strongly influences saffron flowering, continuous monitoring of soil temperatures was carried out throughout the year, along with a weekly monitoring of flower initiation from May to August. Both leaf and flower emergence were delayed, and final emergence reduced as planting depth increased. Planting at 10 or 15 cm seems preferable but stimulates the production of corms too small to flower. The best planting period is from the end of July until the third week of August. Fertilization hastened leaf emergence in the autumn and improved corm production and their nutrient content. The addition of mycorrhizal fungal spores as well as biostimulants had no effect on flowering or saffron yield. All treatments combined; flower production was good in only one of the three study years. It seems that the soil does not warm enough in July during flower induction. Moreover, in the study area, temperatures drop too rapidly during autumn, which delays flowering and reduces yields. It is proposed to cultivate saffron in more southern areas and to use techniques aimed at soil warming in order to increase saffron yields in Quebec.

Full textIt has to be admitted that the function of school principals has changed enormously over the years, in terms of both its attributions and the conditions under which it is exercised. Over time, the task of educational leadership has become more complex and highly diversified. In reviewing the roles and responsibilities assigned to the school principals, particularly over the last few decades, it is interesting to note that a new positioning of their function has been made necessary. Thus, these major changes in the tasks of school principals have led to the need to question the importance given to the acquisition and development of professional competencies in both initial and continuing education, an expectation that goes hand in hand with the effective and efficient work that school principals must do to ensure students' academic success. De facto, this thesis deals with the competencies of Quebec school principals and is modulated according to three phases that led to the writing of as many articles. First, the availability of the Quebec competency standard (MELS, 2008), which is particularly used as a reference by the universities that offer the initial training program in school management, was the initiating element of this thesis. We therefore began our process by asking ourselves whether Quebec's competency standard, which is more than ten years old, is still relevant in terms of the expectations associated with the management of educational institutions, in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes favorable to the function. To this end, a literature review was conducted by comparing Quebec's competency standard with other more recent competency standards. The second phase led us to identify, through the discourse of the school principals, the challenges that arise in their daily lives and the competencies required to assume their role. More specifically, we asked ourselves what competencies are an integral part of the practices of school principals who are requisitioned for their duties, and whether these competencies are included in the competency standard (MELS, 2008). To do so, we conducted interviews (N = 13) with school principals to identify the competencies required in school management in relation to the challenges they face on a daily basis. Finally, we concluded our study of the competencies of school principals by asking whether the professional development of principals, an approach encouraged in the competency standard (MELS, 2008) can be enhanced by their participation in a virtual community of practice (CoP), leading to a reflection on their management practices (MELS, 2008). Thus, following the implementation process associated with a CoP, we used interviews (N = 10) to gather the perceptions of school principals. Subsequently, this process enabled us to analyze CoP as a mode of professional development for principals, with particular emphasis on the four themes associated with CoP learning according to Wenger (2005) : meaning, practice, community and identity. In addition, levers related to the introduction of a virtual CoP on the professional development of school principals were identified in the interviews conducted. The results suggest that: 1. The competencies in the competency standard (MELS, 2008) are still current, although new expectations are also noted as necessary to ensure that current educational needs are met; 2. Well-defined competencies are essential for assuming the role associated with school management and meeting the challenges that arise in the day-to-day work of school principals. Some competencies are found in the competency standard (MELS, 2008), while others are absent, but are necessary depending on the school principals; 3. CoP can, under certain conditions, be a preferred informal training method for further developing the competencies of school principals, as recommended in the competency standard (MELS, 2008). Benefits have been recognized during the experience. This research is part of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council [SSHRC] funded research project « Community of Professional Learning/Practical Learning for School Improvement » led by Yamina Bouchamma and Marc Basque. More specifically, it is based on data from interviews with school principals and vice-principals from different regions of Quebec who participated in this research project.

Full textOver the past two decades, practical training seems to have become a key factor in ensuring the skills development of future Québec elementary and secondary teachers in a professionalizing perspective. This collaborative research has three main phases from which we were inspired to write three articles. These three phases are linked to the object of doctoral research: the development, by trainers of student-trainees, of a development trajectory for professional competence. Designing teaching-learning situations for Four internships within the baccalaureate in high school education. The first phase focuses on the perceptions of student-trainee trainers on the development and formative evaluation of the four professional competencies related to the act of teaching. Through an electronic questionnaire sent to 352 trainers, 52 of whom responded, we wanted to identify their perceptions before initiating the research. This in order to obtain working leads in relation to the choice of professional competence that would be flattened by the co-production of a development trajectory. The second phase corresponds to the cosituation of collaborative research. We analyzed the discourse of seven trainers in the negotiation of meaning they led to define the concept of professional competence and competence in the design of learning situations. Finally, the last stage corresponds to the co-operation and the co-production of the object, ie the development of a development trajectory accompanied by professional situations in which vocational competence will be mobilized as well as the resource domains available to student- Trainees. The last article analyzes the content of the three meetings that took place with the student-trainee trainers to arrive at the co-production of the course. In addition to the development trajectory, the results give rise to the challenges encountered by student-trainee trainers in their accompanying work: their representations of the professional competences linked to the act of teaching are not shared Given the few moments they have to discuss. The results also demonstrate the need to negotiate the meaning of their representations in order to develop the development trajectory. In addition, the two articles present an experiential look at the two communities of practice established during this research and present the challenges faced with the trainers.

Full textThis paper explores the enabling factors as well as challenges students may face in relation to the development of their personal sense of self-efficacy in the context of pedagogical supervision, as part of their initial training in social work at the baccalaureate level. A qualitative methodology was used through semi-structured interviews with six (6) participants. The results indicate that trust plays a decisive role in developing a sense of self-efficacy. The clarification of professional roles, the creation of a space for genuine dialogue, without judgment and shaped as a reflective practice between the supervisor and the supervised student, as well as a coaching approach, suited to the needs of this dyad, are elements that promote the development of a sense of self-efficacy.

Full textSince the end of 1980s, Sustainable Development (SD) has been made the object of much attention, driving the different actors of society to change their behaviors. Various institutional and private initiatives were introduced favoring the implementation of the concept. It was the case for example in Quebec, where the government introduced in 2004 a Plan de développement durable, followed by a the Sustainable Development Act in 2006. Various studies focused on the manner in which companies react to different pressures to widen their spheres of responsibility, but some key issues remain little studied in the literature. This is particularly the case for companies that display passive and negative behavior in the field of the integration of the integration of SD, and Small and Medium-Sized Entreprises (SMEs) in particular. SMEs offer a fertile ground for exploration because of their importance and economic weight, and their historically commitment to the environmental aspects of the SD. The objective of this qualitative study is to produce a portrait of the practices and the discourses of companies, in particular SMEs, in the field of the SD. More specifically, this research aims to analyze the stance of Quebec companies towards SD and of the public policies on this matter, as well as the perceptions of the SMEs which are less committed in this area and the justifications provided. To this end, a content analysis To this end, a content analysis of 69 submissions presented by the business community during the public consultation on the Plan de développement durable du Québec in 2005 was conducted, followed by a case study in nine manufacturing SMEs based on 33 interviews. The results allow to highlight the fact that enterprises adopt and justify passives positions to towards the implementation of SD are assumed and justified by the enterprises. In addition, the inactive behaviors in the field of SD seem just as legitimate as the increasing pressures and the prevailing views favoring the adoption of the SD. This calls into question the findings of recent studies, which adopt an optimistic view on the business engagement in SD, particularly among SMEs. Full textThe introduction of telehealth in the delivery of healthcare and services involves significant, attended or unintended, changes and transformations of various kinds and at different levels: socio-political, economic, organizational, clinical, professional, cultural, human, legal, ethical and technological. The sensitivity of certain issues associated with telehealth points to the gap between a historical vision, known as a technicist (or solutionist), and the actual expectations, needs and contexts of users with respect to its real usefulness and added value for them. It should indeed be noted that in the history of the evolution of telehealth, especially in Quebec, citizen-patients were the major absentees in decisions relating to the development of the services, whereas their involvement could constitute an important lever to inform decisions. In addition, there is a significant lack of research that has addressing the multidimensional and systemic, attended or unintended, negative or positive, consequences of telehealth on individuals and groups (e.g., patients, communities, and professionals), organizations, and health systems. This thesis, composed of two complementary components, aims to: 1) identify the multidimensional and multilevel unintended consequences of ten innovative and large scale telehealth projects that have been implemented in Quebec; and 2) explore the possibility of involving citizen-patients in decisions concerning the development of telehealth services in the cross-perspective of the different stakeholders concerned in Quebec. We used a predominantly qualitative approach. For the first part, the study of the unintended consequences of telehealth, we conducted a secondary analysis of the evaluation data of 10 innovative and structuring projects having been implemented in Quebec, over a 22-year period. The data were the subject of a thematic qualitative analysis based on the model of the unintended consequences of health information technologies (adapted from Bloomrosen et al., 2011). For the second part, the study of citizenpatient involvement in the development of telehealth services in Quebec, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 key informants. A thematic qualitative analysis of the data was carried out based on an integrative conceptual framework derived from the diffusion of innovation theories (adapted from Greenhalgh et al., 2004). The first part found that telehealth requires many adjustments, changes and negotiations, which are often underestimated in the planning stages of telehealth projects. In addition, telehealth could be the source of many unintended consequences, sometimes harmful, that affect individuals and groups, health organizations, and the health system as a whole. The second part helped show that citizen-patient involvement in the development of telehealth services is more of a theoretical idea than a real practice in Quebec's organizations and health system, which places it still at the stage of innovation for many shareholders. It remains that despite the many uncertainties and questions that accompany it, this perspective is seen as potentially informing decision-making and helping to implement harmonious and socially responsible telehealth services, this while driving innovation in organizations and the health system. In addition, the results showed that citizen-patient involvement in decision-making is highly dependent on many interrelated organizational and systemic conditions. The gap between research on the issue and decision-making has also emerged, pointing out the need for sustained knowledge transfer for a better translation of knowledge into action.
