In first-year composition courses, there are three aspects of teaching that are researched well so far: disclosure of trauma in student writing, instructor feedback, and emotional labor. The disclosure of trauma is almost completely unavoidable in first-year composition. We encounter an issue with instructor feedback; how do we provide feedback to student writing, like grammar and mechanics, when the student has disclosed trauma in the writing? Additionally, we can build off this with emotional labor, which already occurs consistently in teaching but is heightened in this instance. When provid

This paper describes the development and verification of a model for real-time simulation of rotorcraft downwash. Downwash gains importance in rotorcraft flight close to terrain and obstacles where strong aerodynamic forces may act on nearby persons and objects. In areas of loose soil composition, it may further entrain dust or snow and cause dense clouds degrading the pilot's vision (Brownout/Whiteout). Taking into account these effects in training simulation is necessary to prepare pilots and crews for critical situations. The developed methods open up the possibility to capture complex boun

It is critical these chemicals are applied at a suitable dose: too much chemical can cause emulsion problems and increase OPEX, while too little chemical can leave a system at risk. The detection of corrosion inhibitor micelles can be used to identify the optimum dose. Native and restored plant communities are part of the foundation of park ecosystems and provide a natural context to cultural and historical events in parks throughout the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (HTLN). Vegetation communities across the HTLN are primarily of three types: prairie, woodland, and forest. Park resource managers need an effective plant community monitoring protocol to guide the development and adaptation of management strategies for maintaining and/or restoring composition and structure of prairies, woodland, and forest communities. Abstract:
Birds are an important component of park ecosystems. They also have a tremendous following among the public, and many parks provide information on the status and long-term trends of bird populations through their interpretive programs. With habitat vanishing, ecosystems being altered, and bird populations declining, we proposed monitoring bird communities on National Park Service lands within the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network. Monitoring breeding birds helps park managers protect birds by providing them with information about the current status and long-term trends in bird populat

Abstract:
Because of the scarcity of water on the Colorado Plateau and their disproportionately high use by flora and fauna, riparian areas were quickly identified as an ecosystem of concern for Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) parks during vital signs planning in 2003. Four vital signs were selected for riparian monitoring of wadeable streams: surface flow, groundwater dynamics, channel geomorphology, and riparian vegetation structure and composition. This monitoring protocol consists of a protocol narrative and 15 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for monitoring wadeable streams in NCPN par

Increasing personal bankruptcy protection raises consumers’ desire to borrow and lenders’ cost of extending credit; the impact on equilibrium borrowing is ambiguous. Using bankruptcy protection changes between 1999 and 2005 across U.S. states, we find that borrowers respond to greater protection by increasing their unsecured debt. Border county estimates suggest that local economic conditions do not drive these results. Borrowers pay more for protection through higher interest rates, yet delinquency is unaffected. Remarkably, our results indicate that rising borrower demand outstripped decreas

Abstract:
Despite the regularity with which governments confront the need to make fiscal adjustments, voter attitudes toward competing consolidation strategies are still not well understood. For example, an influential literature finds that voters prefer public spending cuts to tax increases, but little is known about how these preferences depend on the particular taxes and spending categories that politicians choose or on voter characteristics such as income, ideology and trust. Our analysis of experimental data from 8,000 survey respondents across Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru confirms that,
