Full textBackground: Non-medical staff in nursing homes for the elderly are exposed to high levels of physical and psychological stress related to managing increasingly dependent residents with multiple pathologies. Our research approach is based on Green and Kreuter's public health model. This is intended to describe the physical and mental health (epidemiological diagnosis) and to explore working conditions as experienced by nursing home staff (behavioral and environmental diagnosis). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted by 78 occupational physicians on 2,649 employees (706 housekeepers, 1,565 nursing assistants and 378 nurses) in 105 nursing homes for the elderly in the Rhône-Alpes Region of France. Employee data were collected on several validated questionnaires. All statistical analyses were performed on SAS software, version 9.3. Results: Respondents related elevated hardship and desired more continuous training in palliative care. They were highly exposed to psychosocial stress (strong effort, low reward, effort/reward imbalance, overcommitment). Neck and upper limb musculoskeletal complaints and signs of psychological distress were significantly associated with exposure to psychosocial stress. Conclusions: The next phase of the research plan should consist in establishing an educational diagnosis by assessing the organizational factors associated with psychosocial stress in nursing home staff

Full textIn recent years, statistics have shown a lack of human resources and an increase in psychiatric consultations in hospitals. The one in the city of Culiacán is a flagran illustration of this. Various reports also indicate the complex social conditions anddifficulties of working in hospitals. Many writings have exhibited that the co-presence of these factors causes suffering among mental health professionals. This research focuses from a medical-anthropology perspective, to comprehend how these professionals either be able or take charge patients and treat them when they themselves are susceptible to have the same type of suffering. Moreover, it addresses the issue of “mental health” among mental health professionals from the emergence of suffering and disorders that are found in them. This work assesses, through an ethnographic field, the working conditions and the mental health status of the mental health professionals at the Sinaloa Psychiatric Hospital. Suffering and disorders at work are becoming as a form of normality today. The problem of “mental health” among mental health professionals can thus interpret as a way of expression, a language whereby social relations or experiences in ahospital expressed. The main objective of this thesis is to identify how these mental health professionals are subject to complex structural and social conditions and to analyze the factors contributing to the emergence of mental suffering and mental disorders among mental health professionals in their therapeutic practices

Full textThe general purpose of this doctoral dissertation was to contribute to identify triggers to preserve workers’ psychological health and reduce some of their negative attitudes and behaviors which appear to be harmful to healthcare organizations. Moreover, we aimed to understand the mechanisms underlying such effects. Study 1 used a cross-sectional design to demonstrate that psychosocial safety climate (i.e., PSC) was negatively related to nursing staff’s work-family conflict (i.e., WFC) and turnover intentions, through the mediation of psychological need thwarting. Study 2 developed these results by showing how PSC, through its influence on psychological need thwarting, related to a decrease in burnout three months later. Burnout itself explained an increase in WFC and turnover intentions. Study 3 focused on managers’ psychological health and found that emotional dissonance and organizational resources influenced managers lack of psychological detachment and work engagement three months later, through psychological need thwarting and satisfaction. Altogether, these studies contribute to self-determination theory in the work setting and offer some perspectives on organizational practices that could lastingly alter healthcare employees’ professional experience
