Full textIn both utterly different contexts, China and Quebec, what are the perceptions, practices and expectations of teachers with regard to support for teachers? How Supervisors accompany individually and collectively teachers? What obstacles facing the accompaniment of teachers? What similarities and what differences between coaching teachers in China and Quebec? This memory will answer these questions from a survey by questionnaire to teachers working in several levels of school. In China, there were N = 118 participants who voluntarily responded to our study, and the number is N = 125 for Quebec. The theoretical framework of the interconnected model of professional growth Clarke & Hollingsworth (2002) suggests that the changes of teachers occur in different areas with external domain, internal domain and the field of results. The factorial analyses for the external domain of individual practices show teachers from China and Quebec share the same factors, with a slight difference in the statements. In the external domain of collective practices, the factors are different from one context to another. Then there is the internal area, where participants of the two contexts have the same needs and the same wishes to achieve a sense of personal and collective efficacy. Finally, it is also the case for the field of results: teachers of both territories share contribution factors and obstacles encountered during the process. Key words: Supervision, opinions, China, Quebec

Full textThe popularity of selective special school projects prejudices equality of opportunity in Quebecer secondary schools. This study focuses on a non-selective special school project that offers both homework supervision and guidance for all and the possibility of participating in extracurricular activities for every pupil who wishes to do so. The study aims to describe the difference in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project on homework guidance and supervision according to their characteristics (gender, secondary cycle and type of education) and their work habits (time spent daily on homework and where homework are done). This study uses secondary data from a previous collaborative study which had shown students to have a positive perception of the project’s efficiency (Larouche, Amboulé-Abath et Savard, 2016a). Data interrogated stems from a questionnaire answered by 596 secondary school pupils from special needs education and regular classes. Results show many differences in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project according mainly on their work habits, but also on gender, secondary cycle, and type of education. Pupils who have a most positive perception of the efficiency of the project are those who do their homework both at home and at school and those who spend at least 30 minutes daily on their homework. Data also show that girls have a more positive perception of the efficiency of the project than boys. The latter tend to perceive more the disadvantages of the project. Pupils form cycle one (junior) and those from cycle two (senior) have a different perception of the project’s efficiency. Pupils enrolled in special needs classes have a more negative perception of the efficiency of the project than their peers.

Full textDespite the growing strategic importance of human resource management, there is still little research evaluating its effectiveness. Most participants consider that their organization does not systematically evaluate HRM. Most use indirect or informal methods. This confirms that systematic HRM evaluation is not a priority for most organizations. Some Vice-Presidents, Human Resources (VPHR) expressed disappointment with this situation and indicated that the necessary resources were not available.
Within the limited sample of 10 organizations, the HRM evaluation practices are diversified. The extent of HRM evaluation is surprising given the reservations and modesty expressed by the participants. Most organizations have evaluated multiple HRM policies, programs or services representative of multiple sub-systems within the HRM system.
The high-impact HR function uses performance measures to support its business plans and to convincingly communicate the benefits of its contribution to the stakeholders, especially senior management. Despite a strong continuous improvement culture and the participation of the VPHR in strategic decision making, measuring HRM effectiveness and benchmarking against the best HRM practices is not a systematic process in most organizations.

Full textThis descriptive study, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, evaluated health professionals’ intention to help women targeted by the Quebec Breast Cancer Screening Programme in making informed decisions about breast cancer screening with mammography. The 288 family physicians and 618 nurses who responded to our questionnaire had a strong intention to adopt this behaviour. The perception of behavioural control was the variable most strongly associated with intention, followed by attitude, and social norm. The main barriers to the adoption of the studied behaviour, as perceived by participants were lack of time and limited access to information. The intention of health professionals as well as the adoption of the studied behaviour could be reinforced by training activities on informed decision making and relevant decision support tools made available.

Full textIn this research, we raised the question if Quebec unions were able to act on the immediate work environment during the implementation of lean projects. So we tried to find out which factors of organizational work allow union members to make a lean project, an enabling organization? Our research explored three elements: 1) characterize the outcome of lean projects compared with an enabling organization, 2) characterize the organizational context of lean projects and identify the factors that influence the organizational work during the project and finally 3) characterize the organizational work of the trade union actors during the project and to highlight the factors which conduct to an enabling organization during the project. This exploratory research has been based on the method of multiple case studies. Five cases of lean projects have been documented in a single central union (CSN) by fifteen individual interviews and documents collection. For each project, at least two players were interviewed and documents associated with the project were collected, whenever it was possible. We were able to identify several factors that conduct to an enabling organization: (a) at the external of the business organization level: the act of making available a central union actor in the project with lean’s knowledge, and the presence of an external mediator in case of blocking; (b) at the business organization level: the construction of paritarism and actions and decisions of local officials regarding their participation; and (c) at the production and labour organization level: a way to use value stream mapping, actions and decisions to organize the performance indicators, the close supervision rules, the vertical and horizontal cooperation, as well as to organize the consideration of employees knowledge. These factors are all guidelines of action for trade unions and consultants who spread out lean projects.

Full textFew sociological studies have focused on tourism workers, who are at the forefront of welcoming tourists and key elements of the tourism experience. This can be explained by the difficulty of apprehending a professional sector composed of a myriad of jobs without apparent links between them. The sociology of professions, through the notion of professional culture, nevertheless allows us to go beyond this exploded vision of employment in tourism, and to seek the existence of common traits for all these workers. By analyzing the commitment of workers in tourism hospitality, as well as their relationship to tourists and the tourist site as key elements of this culture, this thesis aims to apprehend the experience of tourism work as a homogeneous whole, without consideration for tourism jobs taken independently. Analysis of the speeches made by fifteen workers in the tourism hospitality in the Old Québec heritage site revealed the existence of a common professional culture, and therefore of a professional group of tourism workers. Despite varying levels of commitment and career paths, most tourism workers share knowledge of local place, culture, and history. Mobilized in acts of hospitality highlighting the hospitable nature of the service relationship in tourism, the goal of this knowledge is to offer an original and unique tourism experience to visitors, regardless of the type of job occupied. Another common point, the touristic place is the subject of a common representation, as a place of work and that of a product to be sold, which prevents from making use of it other than professional. Without being exhaustive, these common points make it possible to approach tourism workers as a homogeneous occupational group, linked by the same professional reality and the same culture, despite disparate jobs.

Full textIn Quebec, My Digital Primary Health Care (MDPHC) is the first electronic personal health record (ePHR) implementation project funded by the province. However, little is known about ePHR implementation, adoption and use in healthcare organizations in Quebec as well as there is little information on their potential impacts. Mainly, adoption is a major concern for ePHR implementation. Indeed, despite the numerous potential benefits associated with ePHR use, the literature reports low adoption rates. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the perspective of chronically ill patients, professionals and managers regarding ePHR adoption, and to examine perceived barriers and facilitators to adoption among users enrolled in an ePHR pilot project in a primary care organization in Quebec. We conducted a case study with mixed method research, predominantly qualitative, in a primary care organization that has implemented an ePHR as part of the MDPHC project funded by the Government of Quebec. In this research, the strategies for data collection were: 1) a quantitative survey carried out in the project pre-implementation phase within a family medicine group, 2) individual semi structured interviews and 3) documentary analysis in order to describe the project context and evolution. We mainly conducted a descriptive statistical analysis of the quantitative data, and a content analysis of data collected during individual interviews and from project documents. Fifty-seven participants completed the questionnaire, and 43 people, including 29 patients (18 users and 11 users), 11 professionals and three managers were interviewed. We identified the most salient facilitators and barriers to ePHR adoption by chronically ill patients and professionals, and to ePHR integration into clinical practice. The main factors are patients’ and professionals’ individual characteristics; the quality of the patient-professional relationship and the clinical practice context in primary care organizations; the characteristics of the offered technology and organizational conditions and support to ePHR use. The contribution of our research was at two levels. First, we were able to identify the most salient conditions that can influence ePHR adoption by chronically ill patients and healthcare professionals and we verified their relevance to the context of the primary care in Quebec. Also, we applied for the first time a new conceptual framework for the analysis of the organizational conditions influencing ePHR adoption by professionals based on a new practical approach that links ePHR adoption by professionals to the project effectiveness of the implementation. ePHR represents a promising tool to support a more active role for chronically ill patients in their individual health condition and healthcare management in collaboration with clinical teams. Moreover, by improving chronically ill patients’ experience of care and increasing their interactions with professionals, ePHR seems to have a prominent place in primary care organizations in Quebec. However, the implementation and adoption of such tools have to be considered under new organizational model involving the patient participation and his collaboration with the clinical team, which it is the main premise. However, such an approach must rely on a change in culture, and requires rethinking several clinical and organizational processes and a negotiation and redefinition of roles and responsibilities of actors in the health network for a new patient- clinical team partnership where ICT should also be adapted to support new practices and a reorganization of the services. This would then lead to focus on the development and integration of informational and communicational innovative tools much more steeped in the clinical and organizational realities. ePHR can be complementary to the electronic medical record, the primary health care professionals’ working tool, with which it is the same set. Full textNurse shortage in the province of Quebec is a growing concern for stakeholders and policy makers in the health care and social services domain. Remote areas are particularly affected by this workforce imbalance because of specific challenges they face relatively to their geographical isolation and recruitment problems. Newly graduates from nursing programs in Quebec universities’ represent a recruitment pool of choice for recruiting nurses that are willing to go rural. The main objective of this project is to explore factors that influence final-year nursing students’ intention to choose a rural area as first employment location. A secondary objective of this study is to explore the links between the intention to work in remote area and the availability of information and communications technology (ICT) in these areas. To meet our objectives, a transversal observational study was conducted. A survey based on the theory of planned behavior to which we add the two fallowing constructs: personal identity and telehealth was build and validated for data collection. Different analyses were performed according to the respondent’s background (rural or urban) and this survey allowed the identification of factors linked to the intention to settle in rural area after graduation. For rural background respondents, personal identity, perceived behavioral control and social norm were identified as determinants underlying the intention to settle down in a rural setting. For urban background respondents, personal identity, perceived behavioral control and affective attitude were significantly associated with their intention to settle down in a rural setting. This project contributes to a greater understanding of the elements that could influence the choice of a place of practice for newly graduated nurses.

Full textBackground : Nursing workload assessment tools are widely used to determine nurse staffing requirements in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). However, several tools exist and it is unclear if they are equivalent. Objective : We aimed to compare three existing workload assessment tools and assess their association with mortality or morbidity among very preterm infants. Methods : Single-center retrospective cohort study of infants born <33 weeks and admitted to a 52-bed level 3 NICU in 2017 to 2018. Required nurse staffing was estimated for each shift using the Winnipeg Assessment of Neonatal Nursing Needs Tool (WANNNT) used as reference tool, the Quebec Provincial NICU Nursing Ratio (QPNNR), and the Canadian NICU Resource Utilization (CNRU). We evaluated correlation between tools using Pearson R. The association between NICU nursing provision ratio (actual number of nurses / recommended number of nurses per shift according to the tools used) during the first 24h, 7 days of hospitalization and whole hospital stay with mortality / morbidity was assessed using logistic regression models. Results : Median number of nurses required per shift using the WANNNT was 25.0 (interquartile range [IQR]:23.1–26.7). Correlation between WANNNT and QPNNR was high (r = 0.92, p < 0.0001), but the QPNNR underestimated the number of nurses per shift by 4.8 (IQR: 4.1–5.4). Correlation between WANNNT and CNRUwas moderate (r = 0.45, p < 0.0001). Nursing provision ratio during the first seven days of admission calculated using both WANNNT and QPNNR was associated with mortality/morbidity (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] (95% CI):0.92 (0.86-0.99); 0.94 (0.89-0.98), respectively). The association between nursing provision ratios for the first 24h and whole hospital stay and mortality/morbidity was not statistically significant. Conclusion : Lower nursing provision ratio during the first seven days of admission is associated with anincreased risk of mortality / morbidity in very preterm infants.

Full textThis thesis aims at studying managers career plateau. Three career plateau forms were surveyed : the subjective plateau, the objective plateau and the mixed one. Three predictor groups were considered : individual and familial barriers (age, seniority, family load, spouse's situation), propension to go ahead (aspirations) and ability to suceed (scholarship, past succes, performance and kind of occupation). This study test also plateau's influence on work attitude. We conducted survey among 3067 managers, spread through 44 business units and associations, covering three major sector of the economy in province of quebec. Results make clear there is a difference between subjective and objective plateau, as well as there are main differences between respondents, depending which plateau stage they are in. The determinants explain about 30% of objective of plateau's variation. Finally, work attitudes are affected rather by subjective plateau than the objective one

Full textThe literature emphasizes certain elements essential to the successful or adequate development, implementation and administration of a performance appraisal system, and it is in reference to this body of literature that the PMP was examined. To find out how the PMP was developed, implemented and administered in practical terms, the researcher interviewed four Human Resources staff members directly responsible for these processes.
The findings of this descriptive study showed that in order for a performance appraisal system to be successful, an organization must be thorough in addressing certain essential elements within each step of its development implementation and administration. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Full textWhat factors come into play and are critical in a new teacher’s drop out? If teacher attrition is not a new phenomenon, it is now more than ever a major issue that should provoke reflection for the sake of the profession and the educational community. The purpose of this qualitative study is to define and understand the multidimensionality of the teacher attrition phenomenon. To answer this question, a vast review of the literature was conducted about the professional induction of teachers. Several aspects related to career entry were then explored: the factors of difficulty related to this period, an overview of some induction programs present in Quebec and elsewhere, the main support activities and measures for new teachers and the roles that school principals could play in supporting novice teachers. This review of the literature has made it possible to identify the factors underlying the phenomenon of dropping out and to identify among them the most important factors in the process of disengagement. In a second step, some elements from the literature review were compared to what emerged from the indepth analysis of the researcher's experience as a teacher. Similarities and differences were thus made between theory and practice. Finally, the discussion was focused on twelve statements, which are especially addressed to the principals, and which aim to support more effectively their teachers in professional integration.

Full textIndividuals who carry out emotionally demanding work have an increased risk of developing work-related psychological problems. In the face of this situation, support from immediate superiors appears to be important. This research aimed to identify the strategies used by immediate superiors to support their staff. Within this qualitative research study that used as its theoretical framework the ergonomic analysis of work, focus groups were conducted with immediate superiors within a Quebec youth centre (Centre jeunesse). These group interviews revealed seven support strategies as well as certain preparatory strategies. The potential influence of organisational, collective and individual factors on the choice of these strategies was also revealed. These findings contribute to the development of knowledge about the strategies used by immediate superiors to support employees and reveal the importance of contextual factors.

Full textHow do school principals handle instructional supervision of the teachers? The purpose of this study is to create a picture of school principals’ practices concerning the instructional supervision of their teachers. This study will allow researchers to assess the principal’s needs prior to a research-action-training. In order to achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 principals (N=19) working for the Découvreurs School Board in Quebec City. These participants consisted of 9 males (N=9) and 10 females (N=10) of various ages and seniority degrees, and were leaders of primary and secondary schools, as well as adult learning centers This study was realised using the thematic analysis method as described by Paillé and Mucchielli (2012). In order to illustrate the main themes discovered, a thematic tree was created and is presented. Five main themes emerged from the analysis: (1) there is an explosion and a large variety of different instructional supervision models found in schools, (2) principals rely on political structures found within the school system to facilitate and justify their instructional supervision actions, (3) principals expressed their need for a supervision standard, a guide or a method to support their practice, for support from instructional supervision professionals, for a system allowing principals to exchange and share about their practice and for a guide to support them in dealing with non-compliant teachers, and (4) comments and self-reflections linked to their instructional supervision of teachers actions, (5) the school structure and (6) collaboration within the school. Keywords: School principals, instructional supervision of teachers, collaboration, teacher resistance.

Thematic analysis was used to describe the experience, completed with by analysis of RAQ-7 scores. Results: Three interconnected components of the experience are identified: hope, involvement and relationship with the person. Positive attitude toward recovery, vision of recovery as a personal journey and working with providers who believe in recovery positively influence the experience. In parallel, being confronted to in-patient with significant symptoms, a culture of intervention geared towards their stabilization and having past experiences of failure in interventions negatively influence the experience. Conclusions and implications: The experience of supporting persons with severe mental illnesses is influenced by various individual and environmental factors (organisational environment). Knowledge of these factors can promote a successful implementation of favorable modes of intervention in the recovery of users in residential and long-term psychiatric care environments. Keywords: recovery-focused mental health services, recovery, serious mental illness, in-patient mental health providers, long-term psychiatric unit.

Full textConnectivity of marine populations represents a key element of metapopulation demography, as it links local populations. For marine invertebrates with a bentho-pelagic life cycle, connectivity occurs during the dispersive larval stage, which is primarily driven by marine currents. The main objective of this study was to show the variability of connectivity within marine metapopulations, especially for Mytilus spp. populations in the St. Lawrence maritime estuary. The secondary objective was to further analyse the spatiotemporal variations of settlement and recruitment in this system, since these processes are essential for connectivity. (1) Different methods to assess the variability of connectivity are described, as well as their applicability to different systems. Following a description of the main factors influencing connectivity, the drivers of variability and their implications for marine metapopulations and biodiversity management are discussed. (2) In addition, field studies were conducted and revealed seasonal and inter-annual variability of Mytilus spp. settlement in the boreal St. Lawrence marine ecosystem. These observations showed that settlement, following the initial larval dispersal phase (i.e. large spatial scale), occurred during one or two short periods of time (1 to 2 weeks) during the reproductive season. Moreover, there was also evidence for a secondary post-metamorphic settlement phase (juneniles) that extended over the entire reproductive season and represented a major part of the total settlement, particularly during weeks following primary larval settlement events and storms. (3) Finally, a geostatistic method, based on the relationship between adult biomass and recruitment in different local populations, identified homogeneous demographic coupling at scales from 12-24 km over a five year study, in the direction of the main current. Overall, this study empirically confirms the importance of variations in adult biomass, settlement, and recruitment in determining the variability of connectivity in marine metapopulations and supports theoretical studies considering such fluctuations.

Full textThe Cooperative movement was institutionalized along the years which contributed, for some authors, to its trivialization. This model would find himself trapped in a response to concerns on which neither the market nor the State are able to answer. This brings discord between the way people perceive the cooperatives and their mission, which aim, in part, a social change. At the same time, workplaces are undergoing changes, which brings a bigger mobilization of workers into companies. We call on their subjectivity. Organizations have to work on their internal function to make sure of the commitment of their workers. On the cooperatives side, the few studies on this topic show that the workers are more satisfied with their job because of the social agenda of the company. They would be more committed to their work because of its mission, which aims the community, rather than the market. By interrogating twelve workers from four cooperatives of Quebec City, this study wishes to see in which ways, and over what, the workers of the cooperative movement are committed. The results of this study show that the workers of the cooperative movement are indeed committed to the cooperative structure. They feel more committed to their work in a cooperative because of the attachment to colleagues, the participation in the decisionmaking process, the idea of giving advice to customers rather than trying to sell them a product, and the lack of a large hierarchy which makes the employees feel closer to their supervisors. In addition to the internal organization of the company, the belonging of the company to the local community also makes the workers more committed to it.

Full textIn Quebec, the retention rate 5 years after entering practice is 25% lower for foreign trained nurses than it is for nurses that completed their studies locally (OIIQ, 2017a). The integration of foreign trained nurses into the health system helps to maintain a sufficient workforce and facilitate accessibility to health care for people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds (Pearson et al., 2007; RNAO, 2007). Based on the Transition Theory of Meleis (2010), our qualitative study inspired by a phenomenology approach aimed at understanding the experience of professional transition as lived by foreign trained nurses in Quebec City. The data, collected for 6 participants was via semi-structured interview, has been analysed with theme identification (Pierre Paillé & Mucchielli, 2012). Three major themes around the experience of internationally educated nurses were found: living different transitions at the same time, experimenting a different practice and realising the contrast between one’s expectations and the reality. Then, conditions influencing transition emerged from the data: using inner resources and strengths to adapt, the influence of the work environment and being different. Finally, two last themes emerged for the analysis concerning the evaluation of the integration made by the nurse herself and an feeling of accomplishment. In accordance with our results and the literature, we conclude this study suggesting different

In three out of the five career life cycle stages, as described in the review of literature, the necessary formal structures and processes required to accomplish the socialization and development of the organization's middle management personnel were nonexistent. In only two of the career life cycle stages did the organization have in place a formal structure and set of processes relating to the specific socialization and development stages of its employees.
