Abstract:
In the Dutch Republic, in its Baroque forms of art, two aesthetic formal modes, theatre and drama, were dynamically related to two political concepts, event and moment. The Dutch version of the Baroque is characterised by a fascination with this world regarded as one possibility out of a plurality of potential worlds. It is this fascination that explains the coincidence in the Dutch Republic, strange at first sight, of Baroque exuberance, irregularity, paradox, and vertigo with scientific rigor, regularity, mathematical logic, and rational distance. Abstract:
This chapter provides an eighteenth-century context for Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas with obbligato organ by showing how their various components engage in a larger discourse about the German Baroque organ: namely, its intimation of Heaven. There are almost 200 surviving church cantatas by Bach, eighteen of which contain movements where the organist transitions from a continuo player to a concertist. Abstract:
Singing in Signs is a collection of essays from prominent opera scholars that explores the rich interplay of symbols in the operatic genre, while simultaneously providing perspective on the state of opera study. Each author, whether explicitly or implicitly, uses the powerful tools of semiotics (the study of signs) to construct interpretations and discover relationships among music, lyrics, and drama. Authors in this collection use a combination of traditional and emerging methodologies to engage composer-constructed and work-specific music-semiotic systems, broader sociocultural music codes,

Abstract:
Though classic servants like the butler or the governess have largely vanished, the Internet is filled with servers: web, ftp, mail, and others perform their daily drudgery, going about their business noiselessly and unnoticed. Why then are current-day digital drudges called servers? This book explores this question by going from the present back to the Baroque to study historical aspects of service through various perspectives, be it the servants' relationship to architecture or their function in literary or scientific contexts. At the intersection of media studies, cultural history, and lite
