Abstract:
The acoustic emissions from rubbing the ends of baseball bats, thin wood rods, and the soles of rubber boots on a snow bed were recorded and analyzed. The same analysis was also extended to the acoustic emissions from impacting a snow bed by small pestles and by subjecting a snow bed to relatively large stresses by stepping on it with shoes of variable rigidity. It is shown that when a snow bed is lightly rubbed, the acoustic emissions originate from vibration mode excitation in the rubbing body. It is argued that when highly granular cold snow is impacted by a small pestle, the acoustic emissions could originate with mode excitation in granule vibration bands around the pestle end, as in the case of impacted singing sands. Layers of highly granular and rounded snow pellets, seemingly formed from frozen raindrops, could contribute especially to snow avalanches. When walking on a snow bed, the acoustic emissions include squeaky sounds that originate from mode excitation in the shoe sole and crunchy and squeally sounds that could originate with crack growth and crystal dislocation processes in the sheared matrix of snow grains and grain bonds.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In Gram-negative bacteria, two essential systems for cell survival have been characterized: the Tol and TonB system. Both Ton and Tol systems are very well conserved in Gram-negative bacteria and coupled to the proton motive force across the inner membrane, acting as energy transducers for active transport (Ton) or maintenance of outer envelope integrity (Tol). Both systems have been embezzled from their primary function and hijacked by colicins as part of the colicin killing pathway. Colicin is a bacteriocin (toxin) produced by and toxic to some strains of Escherichia coli. Colicins are highly effective toxins. However E.coli could develop protective mechanisms to resist to colicin cytotoxic effect. These mechanisms essentially consist to produce an immunity protein. These proteins bind to colicin catalytic domain and inhibit its lethal activity. Yersinia pestis, plague agent, possesses its own colicin-like bacteriocin, Pesticin, which degrades murein. Pesticin activity is inhibited by an immunity protein, Pim, localized in the periplasm. The main goal of this project is to understand inhibition mechanisms between Pim and Pesticin by biochemical and structural data and to provide solution to overcome the resistance issue, since Pesticin was thought to be used as antimicrobial agent. The Pesticin structure has revealed that Pesticin share structural homologies with the T4 lysozyme from the bacteriophage T4. To overcome the resistance issue due to the immunity protein, one solution has been to fuse the Pesticin binding/translocation domain with the T4 lysozyme. Thus, we could engineered and solved the three-dimensional structure of a chimera protein, able to bind FyuA (Pesticin physiological receptor) and kill a FyuA expressing strain, in which the lethal activity is not affected by Pim

Abstract:
In the 1930s, Ella Maillart and Annemarie Schwarzenbach left Switzerland for Afghanistan. Two decades later, Lorenzo Pestelli and Nicolas Bouvier set out on the routes to the East. Daughters and sons of prominent industrialists, academics or diplomats, these four writer-travellers made a point of straying away from the bourgeois conception of travel by presenting their departure as a way of defining the self away from social, family, national and Western inheritance. The East appears to them as the location of many possibilities. Yet, in spite of their desire for a clean slate, they soon realise that, no matter what they do, their body carries the stigma of the West. They will thus try to modify it. If the aim of their travelling is not to make the body disappear completely, it is only by putting it at risk and by offering it to the world, for better and often for worse, that the travellers believe they can taste the delights from the outside. But how to put in words this carnal, physical, sensual and even erotic pleasure ? And what language can be chosen to account for one’s presence in the world? Working jointly on four writers, from different eras, genres and styles, helps us to observe the evolution of the representations of the body in travel literature in the 20th century and at the same time it questions our reading habits. What representations of the body do we expect in travel literature ? Is travel literature really the privileged location to put the body back to work ?

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines how an adequate Internal Compliance Program (ICP) for the Royal Netherlands Airforce (RNLAF) was developed. In order to create an adequate ICP, it is essential to determine which legal and other aspects should be incorporated in the ICP framework. To deduct these relevant aspects of the environment the RNLAF operates in, a Political, Economic, Social, Technological and Legal (PESTL) analysis is used. Furthermore, the different ICP frameworks are compared in order to make a combination of them to create the most adequate ICP for the RNLAF. We conclude that this should be a combination of mainly US ICP Frameworks as of the fact that the RNLAF is mostly US orientated. The COSO model as an internationally widely used best practice framework is the core. The combination of the PESTL analysis, the legal framework and the chosen ICP frameworks together result in an 11 pillars ICP, which we consider is the most adequate ICP for the RNLAF. Leading principle in combining all the aforementioned elements, is that the ICP has to be tailored to its organizations’ characteristics (e.g. nature of items, size of the organization, national, regional and global footprint). We understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, but one needs to design an ICP that specifically fits the given organizational structure, its size and daily operations.

Abstract:
AbstractMost optimistic accounts of analogies in archaeology focus on cases where analogies lead to accurate or well-supported interpretations of the past. This chapter offers a complementary argument: analogies can also provide a valuable form of understanding of cultural and social phenomena when they fail, in the sense of either being shown inaccurate or the evidence being insufficient to determine their accuracy. This type of situation is illustrated through a case study involving the mortarium, a characteristic type of Roman pottery, and its relation to the so-called Romanization debate in Romano-British archaeology. I develop an account of comparative understanding, based on the idea that humans have a natural desire to understand ourselves comparatively, i.e., in terms of how we resemble and differ from societies at other times and places. Pursuing analogies can provide this type of understanding regardless of whether they turn out to be accurate. Furthermore, analogies can provide a similar form of understanding even when the evidence turns out to be insufficient to determine their accuracy.

Abstract:
Major scale projects have been implemented in Turkey in the context of FYDPs to reduce interregional disparities. Funds for these projects were provided from either WB and EU or Turkey’s internal resources. A new application was started in 2006 as parallel to the establishment of Development Agencies in the context of harmonisation process to the EU. There are 26 Development Agencies in Turkey. In this study, KUZKA was selected as research area. Secondary data (call for projects, reports, data of the Ministry of Development, statistics, etc) were used and grants distributed by the KUZKA were examined via PESTLE Analysis. In substance, effects of grants were handled point schemes of politics, economics, social, technological, legal and environmental point of view and also contribution of the KUZKA to regional development in Turkey have been determined.

Abstract:
This study defined morphological importance of cultural heritage assets and formation of Egba-Ake town. Cultural heritages include man’s physical imaginative products which can be touched and seen include buildings, crafts, tools, ivory, cowries, paintings, textiles, pestles, mortars, food, wooden objects, tombs & grave goods, temples, dresses, pottery & potsherd pavements, monuments, books and artifacts. Morphology are factors that influence city/community formation which are determined by synthetic and natural determinants. Cultural heritage assets are whatever is valued by people today that was also cherished by former generations. This research explored the importance of cultural heritage assets in relation to urban fabrics formation of Egba-Ake. Qualitative method was adopted in this study, in-depth interviews and personal observation was used for data collection while Nvivo words tree and satellite imagery was used to analyze collected data. Ake’s palace and Itoku market is located at the center around which the Egba-Ake evolved. Ake’s Palace (political and cultural hub of the town) and Itoku market (the economic heritage of the town) was used to preserve various aspects of Egba-Ake cultural heritage. Ela festival (new yam festival) is annually celebrated cultural activity in Egba-Ake. This finding is relevant to policy makers as it allows the support of potential common structures for heritage administration in Egba-Ake. Effect of heritage in EgbaAke morphology is the new palace of Alake (the cultural ruler) of Egba-Ake were renovated and new once built a few years ago with modern architectural designs, furniture and fittings. This has made the Alake’s Palace to meet ‘international standards’. Social amenities and infrastructures like electricity supply, water systems, hospitals, good roads, administrative offices, schools; communication networks, etc. are now a major feature in Egba-Ake town. Further studies will enhance the implementation issues which may arise from the creation of a framework for cultural heritage management, with emphasis on risk management and risk reduction of cultural heritage.

"Investigation of a Novel Process for Wet Milling a Pharmaceutical Tablet in a Dynamically Rotating Water-Filled Dosage Cup." In ASME 2009 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2009-10669.

Abstract:
The most common commercial pharmaceutical dosage forms are tablets and capsules, but unfortunately these forms may not be suitable for sub-groups, such as very ill children and elderly patients and those experiencing trauma and involved in surgery. Many of these patients have difficulty in swallowing a solid dosage form. For these groups, the general practice is to use equipment such as the age-old mortar and pestle to pulverize the tablet, transfer the powder to a container and then make a liquid suspension by addition of water. This process consists of two unit processes: dry grinding followed by creation of a water suspension. This paper reports on the evaluation of a novel wet milling method for performing these unit operations in a single water-filled dosage cup. The basic concept is that the partially water-filled cup is rotated or spun about its axis to produce relative motion between the tablet and the cup surfaces. The cup surfaces are textured so that material is abraded from the tablet when it strikes the cup walls. The complex water motion assists in “softening” the tablet, abrading particulates from its surface, and producing a fine aqueous suspension. Experimental investigations were performed on two concepts. The first method utilized intermittent single axis cup rotation to produce relative motion between the tablet and cup surfaces. The second concept involved rotating the spinning cup on a rotating arm and also about its own axis. The centrifugal force of the arm rotation pressed the tablet against the spinning cup wall, thereby increasing the shearing force. The efficiency of both methods was investigated analytically and experimentally. The effects of rotation rates, intermittent duty cycles, and water fill volumes were examined and compared.

Clausen, Jay, Samuel Beal, Thomas Georgian, Kevin Gardner, Thomas Douglas, and Ashley Mossell. Effects of milling on the metals analysis of soil samples containing metallic residues. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41241.

Full text
Abstract:
Metallic residues are distributed heterogeneously onto small-arms range soils from projectile fragmentation upon impact with a target or berm backstop. Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) can address the spatially heterogeneous contamination of surface soils on small-arms ranges, but representative kilogram-sized ISM subsamples are affected by the range of metallic residue particle sizes in the sample. This study compares the precision and concentrations of metals in a small-arms range soil sample processed by a puck mill, ring and puck mill, ball mill, and mortar and pestle prior to analysis. The ball mill, puck mill, and puck and ring mill produced acceptable relative standard deviations of less than 15% for the anthropogenic metals of interest (Lead (Pb), Antimony (Sb), Copper (Cu), and Zinc (Zn)), with the ball mill exhibiting the greatest precision for Pb, Cu, and Zn. Precision by mortar and pestle, without milling, was considerably higher (40% to >100%) for anthropogenic metals. Media anthropogenic metal concentrations varied by more than 40% between milling methods, with the greatest concentrations produced by the puck mill, followed by the puck and ring mill and then the ball mill. Metal concentrations were also dependent on milling time, with concentrations stabilizing for the puck mill by 300 s but still increasing for the ball mill over 20 h. Differences in metal concentrations were not directly related to the surface area of the milled sample. Overall, the tested milling methods were successful in producing reproducible data for soils containing metallic residues. However, the effects of milling type and time on concentrations require consideration in environmental investigations.
