Abstract:

The acoustic emissions from rubbing the ends of baseball bats, thin wood rods, and the soles of rubber boots on a snow bed were recorded and analyzed. The same analysis was also extended to the acoustic emissions from impacting a snow bed by small pestles and by subjecting a snow bed to relatively large stresses by stepping on it with shoes of variable rigidity. It is shown that when a snow bed is lightly rubbed, the acoustic emissions originate from vibration mode excitation in the rubbing body. It is argued that when highly granular cold snow is impacted by a small pestle, the acoustic emissions could originate with mode excitation in granule vibration bands around the pestle end, as in the case of impacted singing sands. Layers of highly granular and rounded snow pellets, seemingly formed from frozen raindrops, could contribute especially to snow avalanches. When walking on a snow bed, the acoustic emissions include squeaky sounds that originate from mode excitation in the shoe sole and crunchy and squeally sounds that could originate with crack growth and crystal dislocation processes in the sheared matrix of snow grains and grain bonds.

Abstract:

Healthcare infrastructural investments are a key strategic issue in countries such as Italy, whose aging population faces severe public budget constraints, exacerbated by the unprecedented recession. The choice between traditional procurement (TP) and Public Private Partnerships/Project Finance (PPP/PF) is by now a cornerstone of public strategies concerning complex infrastructural investments. PESTLE and SWOT strategic analysis provides a systematic and comprehensive reflection of the external and internal operational environment but has infrequently been applied to infrastructural procurement. Risk sharing between public and private actors and consequent corporate governance and ownership issues are still under-investigated in the literature, especially if associated with innovative PESTLE and SWOT instruments. Evidence shows that PESTLE and SWOT analysis improves procurement choices and public-private partnering, softening governance concerns. Since empirical considerations about Italy may be globally extended, even beyond the healthcare industry, the audience of this study may conveniently widen well beyond its apparently narrow focus.

War es in früheren Zeiten gang und gäbe, dass die einzige Informationsmöglichkeit zum Thema Gesundheit der Arzt war, so ist es heute, in Zeiten von sozialen Medien, digitalen Netzwerken und Communities, ein Leichtes, selbst medizinische Informationen aus dem Internet zu erhalten. Neben zahlreichen e-Health- und Telemedizin-Lösungen unterschiedlicher Akteure des Gesundheitswesens, gewinnen nun auch Chatbots zunehmend an Bedeutung. Diese textbasierten, meist auf künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) basierenden Dialogsysteme bergen zahlreiche Chancen, aber auch einige Risiken. Dieser Beitrag stellt mit Hilfe einer SWOT- und PESTLE-Analyse das Potenzial von Chatbots dar und stellt dieses für den deutschen e-Gesundheitsmarkt dar. The change of how patients acquire medical information is noticeable to all actors of the health care system. While in former times it was common practice, that the doctors marked the only source of health information, it has become normal nowadays, in the times of social media, digital networks and communities, to receive medical information from the internet by oneself. Next to numerous e-health and telemedical solutions from various participants in the healthcare system, chatbots increasingly gain relevance. This paper presents the potential of chatbots on the German e-health market with the help of a SWOT and a PESTLE analysis. Abstract:

With four-probe technique, we investigated the effects of the mortar-pestle grinding on the conductivity of ferric chloride doped conducting polymer polypyrrole, which had been synthesized by in situ polymerizing the monomer pyrrole in aqueous solutions in the presence of the oxidant iron (III) chloride. As the mortar-pestle grinding duration increased from 0 to 4 hours, the conductivity of the synthesized polypyrrole was found to decrease from about 100 to 10 S/m. In the meantime, the sizes of the grinded polymeric particles were found to decrease from 40.6 to 3.36 m as the grinding duration increased from 0 to 4 hours. Our results demonstrated that the grinding shortened conjugation lengths of the polymeric chains should be responsible for the decrease in the conductivity of the polymer.

This research aimed to obtain DNA extraction protocol of E. kamerunicus for DNA fingerprinting of the species. Results showed that using a DNA extraction kit,material disruption by using micro pestle resulted the highest quantity of DNA, while there were no significant differences of resulted DNA quantity among treatments using tissue lyser for material disruption. DNA extracted by using micro pestle or tissue lyser for material disruption is adequate for DNA fingerprinting using AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) and sequencing techniques.

Abstract:

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the use, applicability and relevance of strategic planning as a process and tool when applied to exploring food security challenges, in the context of existing research on food security and food waste in the food supply chain. The issues associated with robust and resilient food supply chains within a circular economy are increasingly being seen as supportive of creating enhanced levels of food security but the authors argue that this is only sustainable when strategically planned as part of a cross-enterprise, information-rich and complex supply chain. The relevance of the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental (PESTLE) strategic planning tool is explored to establish whether it can play a role tacking the complexity of food insecurity (i.e. a lack of food security). Design/methodology/approach This is a viewpoint piece therefore as a result, thought, normative literature and supposition are used as a means to ground and orientate the views of the authors. Findings The authors identify and conclude that strategic planning tools like PESTLE across enterprises may not be relevant in supporting the reduction of food insecurity. This conclusion is predicated on the heightened level of complexity surrounding the pursuit of food security and the simplistic categorisation of PESTLE factors in a linear fashion that underpin this tool. Rather, the authors’ call for the use of strategic planning tools that are able to capture a large number of inter-related factors holistically. Practical implications This insight to the inter-related factors that contribute to food insecurity will allow policy developers, decision makers and others to develop their understanding of how strategic planning can support increased levels of food security within a circular economy and across cross-enterprises. Originality/value The authors contribute to the literature through a new insight of how normative strategic planning tools need to evolve in a complex, inter-connected world of international business and geo-politics. In doing so, it is expected that this research will motivate others to develop their line of enquiry around uncovering and exploring those inter-relationships connecting PESTLE factors.

AbstractThis study was done to learn which elements are being contributed as contaminants in the sample preparation equipment used at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT). The apparatus investigated included a steel jaw crusher, a ceramic jaw crusher, two aluminum plates as a crusher and grinder, a steel spinning plate pulverizer, an alumina ceramic spinning plate pulverizer, an automated agate mortar and pestle, a high speed spectromill grinder with a tungsten carbide mortar and pestle, and the halves of a sliced quartzite cobble. Major-element Oxides and trace elements were analyzed by x-ray fluorescence. Some of the trace elements were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The expected contamination of ferroalloy elements from steel were present in varying quantities, as were tungsten, tantalum and cobalt fron the tungsten carbide. There was unexpected contamination of sulfur and lead from the steel pulverizer.

Abstract:

This paper presents a collaborative learning activity for courses in engineering degrees or master’s programs that cover the subject and skills of sustainability, social compromise, and ethics for engineering. The activity consists of performing a multidisciplinary analysis of a case of study, which presents a technology or innovation, to detect and debate possible issues and solutions. This learning activity is based on the PESTLE methodology that is used to analyze the political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental aspects of a technology or innovation. The PESTLE analysis is implemented using the jigsaw collaborative learning technique. This learning activity can be completed in two sessions of two hours. To validate its usefulness, the learning activity was applied for two semesters in a study on two courses: one in Informatics Engineering Degree and the other one in the Master Degree of Sustainability at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, with very good results.

Abstract: The palm oil is one of the plantation-sectors which has helped impro- ve economic conditions in Indonesia and has proved a powerful tool for povery alleviation. The oil palm has been successfully adapted suit the needs of small/medium growers. This research focuses on an evaluation strategic issues facing small/medium palm oil growers in Indonesia. This research method uses an exploratory case study approach to answer research aims and questions, based on review of relevant literature and interview questions. The PESTLE framework is the main tool used to evaluate strategic issues and challenges. Data has been collected using primary data as qualitative research by conduction semi-structured interviews with palm growers in Indonesia’s Riau Province. The secondary data has been used to a relevant source to research problem before and after collection of the primary data. Research findings suggest Indonesia has a succesfull national cluster of palm oil industries. Tight competition among hotels in Special Region of Yogyakarta requires each hotel to implement its best business strategy to guarantee their business goals as targeted. The hotels, therefore, needs to manage their strategy. Strategy management is a science that learn how to manage a company in a comprehensive and integrated way; it provides reasons what make some companies achieve their glorious time and some companies do not. This research aims to formulate Business Strategic Planning for Hotel Grand Keisha in order to win competition. This research employs analytical methodology of PESTLE (Politic, Economic, Social, Technology, Legal and Environment), SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunity, Threats) by using EFAS (External Factor Analysis Summary) matrix, IFAS (Internal Factor Analysis Summary) matrix, SWOT matrix, and Grand Strategy matrix. This is qualitative descriptive research. Data collection is conducted through observation, interviews, documentation, triangulation, and literature study. Quality and rating of this research is gained through Focused Group Discussion. This research shows that Hotel Grand Keisha obtains 2.56 of EFAS – 2.52 of IFAS and place Hotel Grand Keisha on Quadrant 1 with alternative strategies of market penetration, market development, and product development. Abstract:

In the present paper, synthesis of Schiff base ligands and the metal complexes are studied and compared by conventional and solvent free route. The synthesis of Schiff base ligands of amino acids (Glycine, Phenylalanine and Tyrosine) with salicylaldehyde and their mixed ligand ternary Cu(II) complexes are discussed. Other ligands are used in co-ordinaion with the schiff base is 1,10- Phenanthroline/thiourea in equimolar ratio. The environmentally efficient and modern developed method for synthesis is the solid state synthesis of salicylidene amino acids through pestle mortar synthetic procedure. This method is compared with the conventional method that require refluxing the reactant mixture for hours in an organic solvent, here ethanol. The complexes are characterized by spectral techniques IR spectroscopy and UV spectroscopy. The investigations concluded that the pestle mortar assisted method is very rapid , simple and economic for the preparation of ligands and complexes as well. The Antimicrobial studies were also performed for the complexes. The spectral data for the ligands and complexes obtained from either method, conventional and solventless procedure are in good agreement with one another. The azomethine bonding(-CH=N-) between salicylaldehyde amino acids based Schiff bases is described by the IR spectral peak around 1600 cm-1.

Given the great interest and impact generated by the previous article on the “Widiba Bank” case study published in this journal, the authors intend now to provide more insights on the analysis of the current Italian framework. A PESTLE analysis is therefore carried out to identify the main financial and environmental alternative strategies. The object of research is the chosen company Widiba Bank because, despite being a latecomer in the Italian online banking industry, its success demonstrated the importance of the adoption of targeted strategies in the digitized world. The performed analysis PESTLE allowed to provide many insights from different perspectives. The paper then confirmed the analyses by comparing the last 5 years’ performances (measured by the ROE ratio and Deposits Growth as Inputs, and Assets Growth as an Output) of the Italian Online Banking industry (average of the years 2016-2019). The data are retrieved from the Italian Public Registry of Incorporated Companies (managed by the Italian Chambers of Commerce) and processed using the DEA SOLVER software. This article strategically enhanced the knowledge of a previous one focused on the same bank by providing different perspectives and, therefore, a comprehensive view of the Widiba bank case study. It, therefore, aims at producing useful resources for business schools, practitioners, and experts.

Purpose Distribution and retail supply of electricity is the most important cog in the power sector value chain. Despite several reforms, most of the Discoms are facing huge financial losses and resorting to a tariff hike which may not be a viable solution. The purpose of this paper is to analyze a case study of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) which inoculated itself against the financial ills, and demonstrates how a utility can nurture itself and manage the key stakeholder expectation with innovation, ethics, safety, transparency and agility being its cornerstone. Design/methodology/approach The study analyses the situation for Tata Power-DDL which needs to realign its strategy to meet emerging sustainability challenges. The case covers the aspect of strategic management, strategy formulation and change management system deployment using tools such as strength, weakness, opportunities, threat (SWOT), political economical social technological legal environment (PESTLE), critical success factor and key performance indicator cascade. It touches upon the emerging need for distribution utilities to look beyond economic signals and take social and environmental impacts into the strategy planning process. Findings It viewed the distribution business beyond its conventional responsibility of making power available to consumers and to provide quality service. A well thought out adaption and adoption of upgraded technology can be a game changer even for a market which is highly regulated and dominated by players in their respective defined territories. Research limitations/implications Since the sector is regulated and each utility has a pre-defined set of area of operation with no competition within its licensed area, hence, there is a limited application of applied strategy tools such as SWOT and PESTLE. Écrit et joué immédiatement après la révolte des Midlands, le portrait que fait la pièce du jeune apprenti, qui, devenu Lord May, réuni une petite armée d’apprentis avant qu’il ne soit soudainement tué, semble conçu pour exprimer les anxiétés de l’époque à l’égard des classes inférieures, de la nature des représentations théâtrales et de l’agitation sociale, et ce à travers plusieurs éléments méta-théâtraux.
