Full textPurpose: The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to knowledge of customers’ buying behaviour toward premium dog food by examining their brand associations and how these are shaped by using Bozita Robur as a case study.
Background: Market for dog food has increased heavily during the last decades what made knowledge of underlying driving forces of dog food consumption crucial for dog food producers. Quite peculiar is a phenomenon of purchasing behaviour towards a product purchased but not consumed turning it into a more complex and dynamic object of study. Lack of coherent and conclusive research that offer an understanding of primary behavioural drivers and preferences of Swedish dog food customers makes it a good opportunity to continue investigating the dog food industry.
Method: The study is conducted in the form of a single case study. A survey instrument is used to collect data on awareness and to identify behavioural beliefs and subjective norms of consumers, followed by phone interviews that uncover their attitudes towards dog food brands. Lantmännen Doggy’s brand Bozita Robur is used for this purpose. Data collected is further analyzed with the application of consumer behaviour related theories.
Findings: The study has found that Swedish customers have built a positive image associated with premium dog food brands, where superior quality is the primary association. On the brand schema level, each of the premium dog food brands investigated holds specific associations in consumer minds, whereas the strength of these associations depends much on brand recognition levels. Bozita Robur, though less familiar among respondents, was found to have a positive brand schema and is associated with Swedishness and high quality.
Customers of premium dog food brand actively search for information when making a purchasing decision towards a dog feed brand. In a product, they do value high nutrition content. Dog owners are influenced by various social groups, among which breeders and specialty store staff have the strongest influence when it comes to purchasing advice of the dog food brands.

Full textThe purpose of this work is to support the business model focused on the sale of clothes for dogs in sizes 7 and 8. How did it come about? The participants of this project have dogs of different breeds, which we identify through our conversations and with other people, that few companies focus on this segment. The initial idea was to raise and conduct interviews to determine the problem of many owners who own large breed dogs when buying a garment for their cocky in large size. Based on the information collected, it was found that the problem is: the high price of large-size garments, the low production of these garments in large sizes and the lack of designs of these. Likewise, the prototype was made, social networks were created, and the garments were published to increase followers, 8 possible buyers who interacted in our publications were also identified, which were sent the prototype to receive feedback on the product. Later, with the comments of the interviewees, the prototype was improved, and it was launched for sale on our social networks. The new garments were made by Ana Flores, the garment maker chosen for the quality of her garments and were published on Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok. Finally, with the sales results, the financial statements, the cash flows and the 3-year sales projections were made.

Full textBackground: The population of Sweden is getting older. It is a big and heterogeneous group in need of health care and a number of older people are living in a nursing home. It is common with physical and mental disorders, loneliness and lack of social interaction in nursing homes. It is shown that animal assisted therapy with dogs can reduce physical and mental illness and motivate older people to participate in physiotherapy. Objective: Examine and compile evidence of animal assisted therapy with dogs on physical, mental och social function in elderly living in a nursing home. Methods: The search was done in the PubMed database and eight articles became included. The articles were assessed for study quality confirmed by the PEDro scale. The evidence from the articles were assessed confirmed by the SBU GRADE. Results: Limited evidence was shown for that animal asssisted therapy with dogs can improve symptoms of depression, apathy, anxiety, agitation, quality of life, emotions and loneliness. Insufficent evidence was found for energy expenditure, physical activity, ADL, weight, BMI, cognition and social interaction. Conclusions: Results show varying evidence for animal assisted therapy with dogs. This study shows that animal assisted therapy with dogs can improve some limited effects in the population of older people at nursing homes, especially for mental health effects. More well made research with larger groups is indicated to ensure and value these effects.

Full textSince the dog is becoming a more important role in the life of humans and is a growing target group, our research will examine how dog owners feel about traveling with their dogs in Sweden, in particularly staying at dog friendly hotels. The data we have collected is from a survey done on 522 dog owners in Sweden. Our main goal with this study is to see if there is a market for more dog friendly hotels in Sweden and how the communication between the hotels and the dog owners is working. We believe that the hotels can benefit from the results of this study. The result shows that there is a need for more dog friendly hotels in Sweden. However the main problem seems to be the communication between the hotels and the dog owners. Since the dog owners feel that there is a lack of information, about which hotels are allowing dogs. A solution to this problem could be to make an international symbol, which will show if a hotel is dog friendly or not.

Full textThis project involves the creation and use of an application to walk the household dogs and shows us the feasibility of its development based on research carried out on people between 18 and 39 years of age who reside in Modern Lima, of socioeconomic level A and B and that they have at least one canine in their home. Due to work, student and family activities, dog owners do not have the ideal time to do the recreation that their dogs need, which can cause stress, depression or behavior problems in their pets. This result has been approved by the veterinary community, experts in dog care and by dog owners who participated in various interviews. From our research, we find that more and more pet owners are willing to obtain new services in order to provide their dogs with a better quality of life. Therefore, he is committed to creating this application so that dog lovers can walk safely using current technology. For its start-up, an initial investment of S /. 32,215.00, which will be financed in a 77 % by “caja Piura” and 23 % by the shareholders. The recovery period will be after the third year of execution.

Full textCurrently, almost 50% of Peruvian families have a pet, being dogs being the most preferred domestic animal in households. Despite the current situation, pet ownership has not decreased in the country, the impact of the pandemic is that now owners tend to spend more time with their dogs, noticing different behaviors that were not perceive before. Therefore, when owners notice bad behaviors and are not able to solve them, they start looking for a dog trainertrainer for their dogs. This could be complicated because there is not information or reach of qualified people to assume this role. The following business proposal consists about the development of a mobile application that offers dog training services with two profiles targeting at users and trainers. The application is called "Dogner" which offers dog owners three types of services: Basic training, puppy socialization and sports training. Dog owners will be able to request service from the comfort of their home, choosing the closest and best qualified trainer, while their curriculum vitae will be visible and they owners will be able to follow up on each training session. The purpose of Dogner is to contribute with job opportunity to trainers who were affected by the current situation, as well as quick Access to search for dog training to all dog owners.

Dogs have been used alongside humans as detection tools for centuries. There have been a multitude of studies published that demonstrate the accuracy and utility of detection dogs, more specifically conservation scent detection dogs. With ubiquitous agricultural threats in the United States, there is a need for a tool to help decrease the threat level. Pet dogs could be the answer. There are millions of pet dogs in the United States and with the success of the dog sport nose work there is the potential to use pet dogs as detection tools. In this proof-of-concept study, six pet dogs were trained to detect the spotted lanternfly. The dogs completed a training phase and five tests. The mean sensitivity, or proportion of correct detections, of the six dogs, for the five tests, was 79.75%. The mean PPP, or likelihood it is that the source of odor is present when a dog offers an alert; of the six dogs, for all five tests, was 66.79%. The results suggest that these six dogs could be beneficial detection tools for the Spotted Lanternfly. Based on the findings in this study, pet dogs could be invaluable in the field of conservation scent detection.

Transfer of bacteria, including antibiotic resistant strains between companion animals and people is likely due to close physical contacts. However, surveillance programs on prevalence of antibiotic resistance are focused mainly on food animals and very little is known about the role of companion animals in the development and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria. For this study, enterococci were chosen as model organism due to intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance and several virulence traits that make them the 3rd most important nosocomial pathogens. In addition, increased fecal shedding of antibiotic resistant bacteria from stressed animals has been reported from studies on food animals. To determine whether the gut microbiota of pet animals serves as a reservoir of clinically important enterococci, 360 enterococcal isolates from two groups: healthy group and pyoderma (stressed) group with 9 dogs in each were identified and screened for resistance to 10 antibiotics and 4 virulence traits. The transferability of resistance determinants and clonality of selected isolates were assessed by horizontal gene transfer assays and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, respectively. In addition, overall diversity of bacteria as well as antibiotic and metal resistance genes in feces of healthy dogs was assessed by tag-encoded parallel pyrosequencing and microarray analysis, respectively. The most prevalent enterococcal species identified was E. faecalis: healthy group (70.5%); pyoderma group (44.0%). In the pyoderma group, antibiotic resistance and virulence traits (esp, gelE) were more frequent than in the healthy group; however, the overall prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains was low (< 37%) in both groups. The most prevalent resistance genes were tet(M)and tet(S). The antibiotic resistance traits were transferable in-vitro in E. faecalis (tetracycline, erythromycin, doxycycline) and E. faecium (tetracycline). Genotyping revealed less diverse E. faecalis community in pyoderma infected dogs. Pyrosequencing (~7,500 sequences per dog) revealed Firmicutes as the dominant phylum and most common genera included Turicibacter, Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus, Clostridium, and Fusobacterium. Two phyla Lentisphaerae (<1%) and Fibrobacteres (<1%) are reported for the first time from healthy dogs. Microarray data revealed the presence of several tetracycline, erythromycin, aminoglycoside, and copper resistance genes; however, most of these originated from one animal with history of chronic skin infection two year prior to our sampling. Higher prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in pyoderma infected dogs may be related to stress; however, this requires further investigation. In conclusion, based on our data, healthy and pyoderma infected dogs do not represent an important reservoir of clinically significant antibiotic resistant microbiota.

Novel ingredients fuel growth in the pet food market. Sorghum grain is a promising ingredient source. It grows in semi-arid regions and the pericarp is rich in phenolic compounds that are well-known antioxidants. The objectives were to determine the impact of milling sorghum on yield and composition of the various fractions, their impact on diet extrusion, and nutrient utilization when fed to dogs. Sorghum milling yields were 68.3% flour, 27.2% mill-feed, and 1.25% germ. Four nutritionally similar dog diets were extruded containing whole sorghum (WSD), sorghum flour (FLD), sorghum mill-feed (MFD), or a control diet (CON) with an equal proportion of corn, wheat and rice. The MFD had the highest (P < 0.05) bulk density and was 1.37-fold heavier than FLD. The FLD had a sectional expansion index (SEI) of 1.92 and 1.35-fold more than MFD and WSD. The FLD and MFD had the hardest kibbles (P < 0.05). Twelve Beagle dogs were fed the experimental diets in a 4 period replicated Latin square design with 9 d adaptation and 5 d total fecal collection (TFC). Fecal output was also estimated using acid insoluble ash (AIA), Cr₂O₃ and TiO₂. Plasma antioxidant activity was measured by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) method. Fecal scores were highest (P < 0.05) for MFD treatment and lowest for CON, with FLD and WSD similar to both extremes. Dogs fed the MFD had the largest quantity (P < 0.05) of feces excreted and FLD the least. Dogs fed the FLD had highest (P < 0.05) overall nutrient digestibility values; whereas, MFD had the lowest values. TiO₂ estimates of fecal output correlated best to all other markers. The MFD had more than 2-fold (P < 0.05) the antioxidant value by ORAC versus the other treatments (20,482 vs average 8,923 μM Trolox Equivalent/L). This study suggests that sorghum flour would benefit easy-to-digest foods and the sorghum mill-feed could benefit foods needing indigestible fiber and antioxidants. Titanium dioxide may be a better marker for fecal output than Cr₂O₃ or TFC. Future work should determine the optimal mill-feed level to provide health benefits without affecting nutrient digestibility.

Full textThe topic of this doctoral thesis are dogs. After the Tamagotchi phenomenon, the release of the video game Nintendogs in 2005 created a new animal: the “realistic” virtual dog. As a new leisure activity, video games represent today an internationally influential industry which is situated at a crossing point with popular art culture: comics, animation etc. More generally, the digital revolution our societies are currently witnessing shows the importance of monitor screens and of communication. The central question of this thesis is how these media have come to redefine our relationship to dogs and to influence our perception of animals in a completely new dimension. A large inventory of references of different media was used going from cinema to Gameboy via publicity, from literary classics to Panini sticker albums via comics, from oeuvres which are famous all over the world to oeuvres which are usually not considered as such. The numerous representations of dogs in these domains announce the advent of the virtual dog.In conclusion, our objective is to understand the history of the illusion of movement, of the relationship between books and virtual animals, i.e. to trace the archaeology of dogs in video games. To write a history of dogs in which reality and virtuality are no longer clearly separable

Full textThe present research is a quantitative, non-experimental study of descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design, which objective is to explore the relationship between self-concept and the bond between the child and his/her pet in a group of 181 children of both sexes (51.9% male, 48.1% female) that belonged to the third (n = 64) , fourth (n = 58) and fifth grade (n = 59) from two private schools in Lima. The participants were between the ages of 7 and 13 years old (M = 9.7, DE = 1.01) of which 152 had a dog as a pet. Participants responded to the Self-concept Questionnaire for Children (Váldez-Medina, González, López, & Reusche, 2001) and the Companion Animal Bonding Scale (Schencke & Farkas, 2012). Regarding the psychological variables, it shows that positive self-concept and pet bonding have a positive but not significant correlation (r = .13). As for the negative self-concept and pet bonding, it was found that it has a negative but not significant correlation (r = -.10). The results are discussed according to the correlation between the items and the positive and negative self-concept dimensions, where it was found that there is a positive relationship between the positive self-concept and the behaviors associated with pet care, as well as between the positive self-concept and the frequency with which the child cares for his pet. Finally, a positive and significant relationship was also found between the negative self-concept and the number of siblings the child possesses.

Due to the changes of population structure and family, the low birth rate, and the aging society, the prevalence of pet is increasing. Pet dog owners often have companion relationship with their dogs, treat them as one of the family, and often bring them during outdoor recreation. At present, parks in Taiwan have different pet dog entering regulations and owners’ attitudes toward the regulations are also various. Although several researches studied owners’ pet dog attachment, few of them explored how owners’ pet dog attachment influences their attitudes toward pet dog entering regulations. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the influences of owners’ pet dog attachment on their attitudes toward pet dogs entering regulations. Data were collected at the Neidong National Forest Park and visitors who have or had ever a pet dog were investigated. The questionnaire contained five parts, including pet dog attachment, attitudes toward pet dog entering regulations, pet care status, taking dog to the Forest Park or not, and basic information of respondents. Pet dog attachment was measured with the scale of Dog Attachment Questionnaire (DAQ) developed by Archer & Ireland (2011); attitudes toward pet dog entering regulations were measured with 7 questions; pet care status and taking dog to the Forest Park or not were measured with a question respectively; seven questions were used to measure basic information of respondents. A total 464 valid questionnaires were collected. The description analysis was applied to understand sample structure and distribution of each variable, exploratory factor analysis was employed to reduce items of pet dog attachment, and Chi square analysis was applied to test the study hypotheses. The study results indicated that respondents having dogs now and owners bringing dogs less supported strict pet dog entering regulations. On the contrary, respondents having dogs before and owners without dogs with them more supported strict pet dog entering regulations. The pet dog attachment contains four factors, including “Closeness & Dogs as Family”, “Companionship & Care”, “Desire for, Positives from, and Dog Contact”, and “Absence of Pet Attachment”. In terns of the relation between pet attachment and attitude of pet dog entering regulation, respondents having dogs now and before have similar patterns; the more repondents attaching to their pet dogs, the less they supported strick pet dog entering regulations. According to the study results, it was suggested when considering pet dog management strategies, resource managers should consider not only the characteristics of resources and potential recreation conflicts caused by pet dogs, but also the needs of pet dog owners and their pet dog attachment. If necessary, the implementation of strict pet dog entering regulations should have relative countermeasures to reduce the potential against from pet dog owners.

Full textThe main purpose of this thesis is to create a business plan for a company which provides services for pets, namely Pet Sitting, Dog Walking and other related services. The process of development of the thesis began with the analysis of theories connected both to pet issues and to business plan creation. As a result, the following step was to apply some of the studied theories to examine the surrounding context, such as the PEST analysis, Porter’s six forces analysis and the Systemic SWOT analysis. Afterwards the already existing competition was analyzed in terms of advantages and disadvantages while the potential customers were studied through the application of a small questionnaire placed in pet shops, veterinarians and small coffee shops. The following step was to define the target and positioning that should be used, taking into account the phase in the life cycle in which the market is at, as well as the key success factors for the market. Based the previous work the company strategy was chara cterized. Additionally aspects such as name, vision, mission, logo and slogan were chosen. Subsequently the marketing-mix was delineated in terms of the previously studied service marketing seven P’s; product, price, placement, promotion, people, process and physical evidence. The final step was to perform a financial analysis, assess the viability of the company, the sensitivity of the results obtained and draw conclusions from those analyses.

Treating a household dog as a member of the family is not at all uncommon. In fact, there is an increasing number of pet owners who are becoming more invested in the well-being and comfort of their canine companions. This has led to a rise in the significance and commercial value of products that cater to the physical and psychological needs of pet dogs. Having said that, it is difficult to gauge what these needs are, as dogs are not able to express their preferences and needs via human language. Thus, this project has incorporated data from literature review and field research in addition to adapting personal experiences into the creative process and utilizing user feedback for verification. This project was carried out in three phases. In the first phase, qualitative methodology such as in-depth interviews in the field was used to collect data. After conducting a textual analysis of the interviews with five dog lovers, seven distinct elements were identified for pet-owner relationships and the comfort products they use: (1) consumer attitudes towards purchasing dog supplies, (2) dog owners supplying old clothing for the dog, (3) pet owner’s DIY behavior, (4) modes of interaction between owner and pet in the living space, (5) designated space for the dog, (6) the dog’s physiology and bodily functions, and (7) the dog’s activity space. In the second phase, the findings in the first phase were applied to the creation process. “Susan, Sugar, Honey”, a forerunner project that focused on creating comfort products for dogs, was used as a benchmark. Findings yielded the following four elements concerning dog owners’ modes of relaxation: (1) modes of shared utility, (2) supplying old clothing, (3) production method, and (4) mobility. These elements were then incorporated into the creation process. The design of the comfort products were based on these elements as well as the modes of relaxation for three dog lovers. In the third and final phase, users feedback for how the three products “Half”, “Scent Fort”, and “BOBObone” were used at home as well as any changes in the modes of relaxation for the owner and pet dog before and after use were used to draw conclusions about the products' suitability and applicability and the creation process. Overall, this project aimed to find the ideal comfort product (e.g. sofa, bed) for dogs. The findings offer points to consider when designing and creating dog comfort products. These points primarily include the dog’s sensibilities and psychological comfort. Through interviews with dog owners, a methodology for making products that meet the needs of pet dogs was created. The objective of this project was ultimately to connect with fellow dog lovers and encourage them to consider the well-being and comfort of their canine best friends.

With the increase of the pet population, pet products are gaining more importance. In this study, customer's perception to product form of pet dog house products is mainly addressed. The semantic differential experiment (SD method) is used to conduct dog house preference and style image survey so as to understand the consumer’s emotional appeal to the dog house. This study is made up of two stages, the pilot test and the formal SD experiment. The questionnaire invited 40 students and office workers for the SD test, where 16 pairs of image words and preference were included for the experiment of 20 dog house samples. The data collected by the experiment were evaluated by means of analysis of variance (ANOVA), morphological analysis and Q-type I analysis. According to the analysis of the style image scatter diagram, the most common images of the preferred doghouses are the popular, mature, dazzling, avant-garde, sleek, creative, spacious and warm images. It can be more motivated for customers to buy the doghouse with these styles. These preferred dog houses have features in pointed roof or flat roof, wood material, wood color, tent type or cottage type or courtyard type overall shape. Features of other key images can be obtained by the same method. From regression analysis, the avant garde and mature images can be used to predict consumer’s preference to pet dog house. The avant garde has a positive relationship to consumer’s preference while the mature image has a negative relationships to consumer’s preference. In addition, samples of the same material are significantly different in image and preference. Some samples are more competitive than others and can serve as references for the design and development of new pet dog house design. From ANOVA, pet dog house of different materials can meet some aspects of consumer’s needs and have certain shares in the market. The result of image perceptual space indicates that if consumers pay attention to the usage of pet dog houses, metal pet dog house products are better choice. If consumers value design and modern image, wood and plastic dog house products will be more attractive.

The status of pet in human life has been changed because of the era changing. Today, pet becomes an important role in modern family. Many pet lovers regard pet as a family member and the best friend, they even regard themselves as parent of the pet instead of pet owners. Thus, they usually pay their attention on the pet care: they notice their pet’s health status, wash them and prepare their food. As a result, the owner’s demand of pet care has been increased during past years containing the quality of pet care. Among pet cares, pet grooming becomes an important market. However, there exists a large gap of pet grooming quality, many per owners worry about the injury of their pets. Besides, pet’s personality differs individually, and the outcome is that pet self-washing becomes a substitute and the concept of pet self-washing is similar to that of car self-washing and self-laundry, pet owners can washing their pet personally via pet washing machine. In this study, the focus is on the willingness using pet self-washing for dog owners. The methodology is the questionnaires via random sampling and the total amount of valid questionnaire is 220. The results are achieved via spss 18.0 software and shows that the dominant pet owners are single female with age between 16 and 30. Next, the dependence of the willingness using pet self-washing on lifestyle is strong: the stronger relationship between pet and owner, the higher willingness using per self-washing. Also, perception risk interfere their willingness.

In recent years, Taiwanese society has faced a social trend of declining birthrate and aging. In addition, the ratio of top guest and unmarried singles has risen, so that most people prefer to keep pets without children and become a source of emotional attachment and spiritual support. Although there are many related researches, most of them focus on quantitative research. The relationship between pet dogs and middle-aged and old-aged owners is more difficult to explore. The emotional part is more difficult to quantify. Therefore, this study chooses qualitative interview research. What are the motivations and factors of love for middle-aged and elderly people to support their dogs? Exploring the role and function of pet dogs in modern families? What is the emotional attachment of middle-aged and old-aged owners to pet dogs? For modern people, pets are no longer pets, but another new family companionship. This thesis found that most of the motivations of these middle-aged and old-fed breeders were passively raised because of the needs of the next generation. The characteristics of middle-aged and old-aged owners who love their pets include: pet dogs are very loyal, loved, very clever, very human, very caring, very sticky, very cute and so on. Most middle-aged and old-aged owners treat pet dogs as another child in their family, which is like a family. In the emotional attachment relationship between middle-aged and old-aged owners and pet dogs, there is a deep dependence on intimacy, safe haven and security. However, the emotional attachment relationship between middle-aged and old-aged owners and pet dogs shows anxiety and worry in the sense of separation. In summary, it is hoped that these findings will enhance the well-being of middle-aged and old-aged owners and dogs.

Physical activity and individuals’ health are closely related. Although there are many ways of increasing the amount of physical activity, dog walking is one of the most pragmatic approaches. The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between companion dog owners’ dog walking and the amount of physical activity. A questionnaire was conducted of companion dog owners from Pingtung and the surrounding townships. The total number of valid questionnaires received was 193. Of the respondents, 70 were male and 123 were female. The data received was analyzed using SPSS 18.0 for windows and was tested using methods including descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, Spearman’s rank correlation, and multiple regression analysis for the verification of hypotheses. Results showed that dog walking is the main form of physical activity for dog owners. They walk their dogs less than two times per day and more than 20 minutes each time. The time that older owners spend walking their dogs is significantly longer than younger owners. Based on the results, it can be inferred that dog walking is indeed one of the main forms of physical activity of companion dog owners, and this is more evident in the middle and older age groups. According to the results, the researcher proposed relevant suggestions to provide a reference for health promotion organizations and future researchers.
