The interface between biaxially oriented poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films and poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) was reinforced by nitrogen plasma treatment of PET film and subsequent annealing treatment of the PET/PSMA bi-material. The fracture toughness, Gc, of the interface was quantitatively measured using an asymmetric double cantilever beam test (ADCB). X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) was used to measure the change in the surface composition of PET films upon plasma treatment and correlate the fracture toughness of the interface. AbstractThis paper investigates the adhesive interface in a polymer/metal (polyethylene terephthalate/steel) laminate that is subjected to uniaxial strain. Cross-sections perpendicular to such interfaces were created with a focused ion beam and imaged with scanning electron microscopy during straining in the electron microscope. During in situ straining, glide steps formed by the steel caused traction at the interface and initiated crazes in the polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These crazes readily propagated along the free surface of the PET layer. Similar crazing has not been previously enc

There would always be some residual PU film on the steel surface after the peeling test, no matter what the PU film thickness is, and the interface failure mode would always be the mixed failure mode. Le dissipazioni dovute all'attrito causano ingenti costi energetici e ambientali in diversi settori, tra cui quello del trasporto e dell'industria. Abstract:
Forest health has never been a more urgent concern in California. A variety of forest ecosystem types have experienced extraordinary combinations of stressors and disturbances over the past century, which have resulted in significant changes to forest conditions. Current conditions are a product of multiple interacting factors, including fire exclusion, historic logging practices, increased wildland-urban-interface expansion and, more recently, the effects associated with climate change. The intersection of the factors has led to high severity fire, drought linked mortality, and pest infestati

Lever, James, and Jason Weale. High efficiency fuel sleds for Polar traverses. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/43445.

Full text
Abstract:
We describe here the evolution of lightweight, high-efficiency fuel sleds for Polar over-snow traverses. These sleds consist of flexible bladders strapped to sheets of high molecular weight polyethylene. They cost 1/6th, weigh 1/10th and triple the fuel delivered per towing tractor compared with steel sleds. An eight-tractor fleet has conducted three 3400-km roundtrips to South Pole with each travers delivering 320,000 kg of fuel while emitting <1% the pollutants, consuming 1/2 the fuel and saving $1.6 M compared with aircraft resupply. A two tractor fleet in Greenland recently delivered 83

Abstract:
We hereby embark on a frontier journey articulating two of our flagship programs – “Earth System Dynamic Intelligence” and “Quantum Information Technologies in the Earth Sciences” – to take the pulse of our planet and discern its manifold complexity in a critically changing world. Going beyond the traditional stochastic-dynamic, information-theoretic, artificial intelligence, mechanistic and hybrid approaches to information and complexity, the underlying fundamental science ignites disruptive developments empowering complex problem solving across frontier natural, social and technical geoscien

Thacker. L51930 Optimized Sampling Frequencies for Weld Reliability Assessments of Long Pipeline Segments. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011322.

Full text
Abstract:
This project responds to a need to obtain statistically adequate quantities of input data for probabilistic assessments of girth welded pipelines. It is desirable to limit the data collection efforts to that warranted by overall reliability and confidence requirements. This is motivated by the challenge of limited and/or high-cost access to in-service pipelines for property measurement and flaw inspection. The goal of this project was to develop a methodology for specifying the minimum, cost-optimized sampling frequency for each of the model input parameters in a multiple girth weld fitness-fo

1. On January 7, 2025, Palisades and Eaton fires started and burned through urban areas of Los Angeles County, California. They collectively destroyed nearly 16,250 structures, and directly exposed ~41,000 people, ranking them 2nd and 3rd most destructive wildfires in California’s history1. 2. Started during drought conditions coincident with the Santa Ana winds with wind gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour, the fires rapidly spread into densely populated urban areas, resulting in 29 fatalities and widespread population displacement. 3. The objective includes: Assess commercially available inspection methods to validate integrity of composite repair systems. Identify applicability to inspect composite overwrap and parent metal for both onshore and sub-sea pipelines (where information is available). Identify sources of data to include other users of composite materials(aerospace/aircraft, naval/ship repairs). Identify procedures and technologies to assess inspection effectiveness and provide a gap analysis.
