Abstract:

 ENGELSK ABSTRACT:
Peter Gundelach: The Many Faces of Secularism

This article analyses the relationship between religion and politics in nine ethnic groups in Denmark (including Danes). The data were collected through a survey among these groups. Secularization is defined as the lack of a correlation between religion and other values, and is measured in relation to political and family values. The study has three hypotheses. 1) A secularization hypothesis states that Muslims are less secularized than Christians in Denmark; 2) An ethnicity hypothesis argues that ethnicity is more important than denomination as regards values; 3) A socialization hypothesis asserts that the longer time a person has lived in Denmark, the more s/he has secularized values. Since descendants of immigrants are socialized in Danish institutions as well as in immigrant families, the argument is that they are between the Danes and the immigrants in relation to secularization. The analysis shows that none of the hypotheses can be generally confirmed. Secularization must be explained by combinations of ethnicity and denomination. This means that it is impossible to generalize about the relationship between religious values and other values in all ethnic groups.

Key words: Secularization, ethnicity, survey, Islam, political values.

Abstract:
Abstract In this article, Laura Halperin reads Chicana writer Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street as a disidentificatory, revisionist, and intersectional collection of fairy tales. Halperin builds on critical scholarship about The House on Mango Street and fairy tales and inflects a U.S. Third World feminist analysis by examining how the narrative draws attention to the ways gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class are entwined. Rather than view the text as an outright rejection of the dubious premises and promises provided by fairy tales—individualist, (hetero)sexist, classist, and racist ones—she argues that the book references such tales at length to highlight their widespread power while also challenging their problematic ideologies. The simultaneous engagement with and contestation of these stories are what makes Cisneros’s text revisionist and disidentificatory, and Cisneros’s attention to the particular concerns faced by impoverished females of color makes the text intersectional. The two tales with which Cisneros most explicitly engages are “Cinderella” and “Rapunzel,” and the two central images in her collection are shoes and windows. The House on Mango Street also references other stories and rhymes, including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Peter Pan,” “The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe,” Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and The Little House, just as it invokes Mexican (American) folklore and Greek and Roman mythology. Cisneros’s mimetic repetition of these narratives underscores their pervasiveness and allure while critiquing the myths they advance.

Abstract:
Peter Brown’s classic essay of 1971, ‘The Rise and Function of the Holy Man in Late Antiquity’, is celebrated for applying the tools of sociology and anthropology to the study of late antique sanctity. It strove to remove holy men from the distorting literary texts through which we know them, and to place them instead in a rich context of everyday concerns. My starting point here, however, is not the essay itself but a no less interesting critique of it subsequently made by the author himself. In 1998, Brown offered a number of pieces of advice he would now give to a younger self embarking on the same topic. In 1971, he claimed, he had unwittingly colluded with the hagiographical texts by presenting holy men in dramatic, epic terms. Focusing on what holy men did for society, he had observed the phenomenon from a purely third-person perspective, and had neglected their own personal quest for sanctity. Although he had located the holy man’s activity in the everyday, he had effectively conceded that the ultimate locus of the holy man’s holiness — his superior understanding — was unknowable.

Abstract:

Educational Psychology<br>M.S.Ed.<br>This study evaluated the effects of least-to-most prompting strategies to increase peer-to-peer vocal mands. Three preschool-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participated in this study, which focused on increasing mands towards same age peers with ASD. Highly preferred tangibles were delivered from the peers to the target participants, contingent on a correct independent or prompted mand. Generalization was programmed within the study as peers were alternated and sessions were conducted both in a separate, discrete trial room and within the natural classroom setting. Results of the study suggest that the teaching package with least-to-most prompting increased peer-to-peer mands for the three target participants.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 69-78. Leaf gas exchange (LGE) of mango cultivars Kensington, Irwin and Tommy Atkins was investigated in a series of field experiments under varying environmental and physiological conditions in the Ord River Irrigation Area, Kununurra, Western Australia. The environmental influences on mango during fruit development are extreme producing high vapour pressure deficient (VPD) and photosynthetic photon flux density. This combined with internal pressures associated with crop load and water stress have a profound effect on LGE. Diurnal changes in atmospheric and leaf temperature are accompanied by changes in VPD in the field. Differences in cultivars in LGE response to changing environmental conditions were significant, with Kensington appearing the most sensitive to extreme atmospheric conditions. There appeared to be no cultivar differences in LGE with changing soil moisture status.

Manas K. Ghorai of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur depended (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 2311) on memory of chirality during deprotonation to convert 1 to the aziridine 3. X. Peter Zhang of the University of South Florida demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 5309) that Co-catalyzed enantioselective aziridination is compatible with fluoro-aromatics such as 5. David M. Hodgson of the University of Oxford prepared (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1098) the azetidine 8 by double deprotonation of 7 followed by acylation. Laurel L. Schafer of the University of British Columbia assembled (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2182) 11 by Ta-catalyzed aminoalkylation of 10 with 9, followed by cyclization. Nicholas A. Magnus of Eli Lilly reduced (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 5768) the ketone 12 to the alcohol 13 with high de and ee. Pei-Qiang Huang of Xiamen University effected (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1790) the reductive addition of 14 to 15 to give 16. The titanocene protocol reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 3494) by Xiao Zheng, also of Xiamen University, effectively mediated similar transformations. En route to (–)-quinocarcin, Nobutaka Fujii and Hiroaki Ohno of Kyoto University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 8875) 17 to 18 with high diastereoselectivity. Dipolar cycloaddition, long a workhorse of pyrrolidine synthesis, has been improved by enantioselective organocatalysis. For instance, Liu-Zhu Gong of the University of Science and Technology of China combined (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2676) 19, 20, and 21 to give the triester 22. Qi-Lin Zhou of Nankai University reduced (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 6072) the tetrahydropyridine 23 to 24 in high ee. Takaaki Sato and Noritaka Chida of Keio University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 678) the intermediate from reduction of 25 to the piperidine 26. Yasumasa Hamada of Chiba University devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2013, 54, 1562) the rearrangement of 27 to the piperidine 28. In a synthesis of (–)-hippodamine, Shigeo Katsumura of Kwansei Gakuin University used (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2758) the chiral auxiliary 29 to direct the combination of 30 with 31 to give 32.

Abstract:
Lead is useful, surprising, unpredictable, dangerous – and deadly. Lead is useful. Previous generations found it to be an essential part of civilized living: pipes, pewter, pottery, paints, and even potions were made with it. Toy soldiers were cast from it, port wine protected by it; grey hair was disguised with it, church roofs covered with it; cosmetics contained it, and cans of food were sealed with it. Lead is surprising. In 1859, Professor Lyon Playfair was taking the 18-year-old Prince of Wales, and future King Edward VII, round the chemistry laboratories of Edinburgh University when they came across a pot of molten lead. Playfair then carried out a remarkable demonstration: he poured the molten metal over the fingers of his assistant and to the Prince’s amazement the young man’s hand was unharmed. The Prince too wanted to try the same test, and after rinsing his hand in dilute ammonia solution, lead was poured over his fingers as well – again without scalding them. This demonstration was still being performed before stunned audiences in the 1950s, and the trick is to have the hand wet, so that as the metal hits the film of water on the skin it forms an instant layer of vapour that both protects the skin and causes the lead to bounce off in tiny droplets. Lead is unpredictable. In Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice those who would seek to marry the fair Portia are offered three caskets from which to choose: gold, silver, or lead. The man who chooses the casket containing her portrait will win her hand in marriage. Of course the winning choice is lead, the casket with the curiously foreboding inscription: ‘Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath’ and her would-be suitor Bassanio reasons that this must be the right one saying: …‘. . . but thou, thou meagre lead, Which rather threat’nest than does promise aught, Thy plainness moves me more than eloquence, And here choose I; joy be the consequence!’ [The Merchant of Venice, III, ii]…
