Abstract:
This research aims to find translation procedures from English to Indonesian which are used in translating Spiderwick Chronicles novel. The translator translates from source language (English) to target language (Indonesia). The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, relates to the aim of this research is to find out the categories of translation procedure in Spiderwick Chronicle Novel. The researcher used the translation procedure (Newmark, 1988:82-91) framework by Peter Newmark for examining the data. Based on the result from the analysis showed that the total number Newmark’s translation procedure applied in Spiderwick Novel is 59 . The most translation procedure applied is shift or transposition with 20 (33,9%), and the least of translation procedure applied are Cultural equivalent , synonymy and functional equivalent with the total frequency 1 (1,7%). The translator used modulations as the second most translation procedure applied in the Spiderwick novel with 14 (23,7%). .

Abstract:
The present study is a Corpus-based research which analyzes the translation of Body-Related Metaphors in the Holy Koran by Yusuf Ali, Marmaduke Pickthal and Thomas Irving, within the framework of Newmark�s procedures of metaphor translation. The data analyzed consists of a sample of 107 words and phrases which are categorized as metaphors of ear, eye, face, and hand. Out of the seven procedures proposed by Newmark for translating metaphors, the translators applied five procedures. None of the translators applied Newmark�s fourth or sixth procedure and no new procedure was observed. The results revealed that among 107 metaphors examined, there is a general tendency (57.94%) towards reproducing the same image in the TL, and the three translators translated 68 metaphors (63.55%) using similar procedures. This study concludes that the likely and the most frequent metaphor translation procedures in the Holy Koran are: (1) to reproduce the same image in the TL, Newmark�s first procedure; and (2) to convert metaphor to sense (literal meaning), Newmark�s fifth procedure.Keywords: metaphor, the Holy Koran, Peter Newmark, procedure

Abstract:
The profound transformations in linguistics during the early 20th century contributed to great investment in linguistic theories and their applications in translation, whose theorizing problems were linked to the development that raised cognitive, linguistic and cultural issues. This relationship was reflected in Peter Newmark’s research, who founded the semantic and communicative approache. He built his translation theory on the idea of not isolating the transmissive act from communication. Newmark provided a definition of communicative translation as it seeks to influence its readers as much as possible with the effect on the readers of the ST. While the semantic translation attempts to convey the exact contextual meaning of the ST as the semantic and grammatical structures of the TL permitted. Translation is also adept in the era of globalization with its influence on the boundaries between many Nations and civilizations. It is a tool for unifying them, and one of the most important means of facilitating the deepening and expansion of people's views toward other cultures. We aim in our research to introduce Newmark's approach to translation, and the disclosure of the potentials it offers to establish a bridge of scientific, human and civilizational communication between academic research and societies. We will focus on defining the criteria and priorities proposed in analyzing texts to highlight how communicative translation makes on the target recipient an effect equivalent to the ST has on the source recipient. And how to achieve accurate communication and its extent by revealing what makes it possible to benefit from the mechanisms of discourse analysis.

Abstract:
The present research featured P. Newmark's translation strategy and procedures applied to the translation of metaphors in literary texts, namely Stephen King's oeuvre. The study revealed the effect of functional style on metaphor translation. The type of metaphor, e.g. dead, cliché, stock, adapted, recent, and original, also proved important for adequate translation. The authors performed a comparative and correlative analysis of metaphors in translations made by different authors. The study was based on descriptive, cognitive, semantic, and lexicographic methods. The general functional analysis revealed grammar and lexical transformations that metaphors undergo in the process of application of P. Newmark's translation strategy and procedures. The article focuses on the optimal ways of metaphor translation as described by P. Newmark. The translator can preserve the original image in the translated text, keep the original metaphor, replace the original image with a common one, render the metaphor using a figurative comparison while preserving the original image and notion explication, ignore the notion explication of the metaphor, or totally remove the image. The analysis proved the significance of P. Newmark's approach to metaphor translation and its methodological value for modern translation theory and practice. The results obtained can be applied both in professional translation and in corresponding disciplines.

Abstraks Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penerjemahan puisi yang menjelaskan kesamaan efek antara pembaca bahasa sasaran dan sumber. Penelitian ini membahas tentang penerjemahan puisi Sapardi Jokodamono yang berjudul Sihir Hujan dan Yang Fana adalah Waktu ke dalam puisi berbahasa Inggris dengan judul Black Magic Rain dan Time is Meaningless yang diterjemahkan oleh Harry Avelling. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif analisis serta komponensial analisis berdasarkan teori Peter Newmark. Selain menggunakan metode penerjemahan setia yang diajaukan oleh Peter Newmark, penelitian ini juga menggunakan kriteria penilaian penerjemahan yang diajukan oleh Nababan, Akurasi, Keberterimaan, dan Keterbacaan. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa 99,3 % puisi ini menggunakan metode penerjemahan setia dengan membandingkan struktur gramer, kata, dan frasa. Sedangkan 0,63% dalam puisi yang berjudul Sihir Hujan tidak terlalu menggunakan penerjemahan setia. ---AbstractThe study in this paper aims to show that a good translation of poetry provides the reader with a similar effect to that gained by reading the original text. It draws upon the importance of faithful translation in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s poetry: Sihir Hujan and Yang Fana adalah Waktu translates into Black Magic Rain and Time is Meaningless that translated by Harry Aveling. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative analysis in which the writer describes the method of translator to transfers the poetry from Indonesian into English and componential analysis based on Newmark theories about faithful translation and the criteria of translation poetry assessment used by Nababan that used three instrument such as: Accuracy-rating instrument, Readability-rating instrument, and Instruments for measuring the acceptability of a text that used by the writer to measure the quality of translation from data analysis. From the analysis concludes that 99,37% of lines-stanza in this poetry is faithful translation by comparing the structure grammar, word, and phrase is accurate, readability, and acceptable. Then, 0,63% of other lines in poetry of Sihir Hujan are not conveyed as faithful translation and not meet the three criteria instrument of translation assessment.

AbstractThis study is an attempt to probe into the translation of metaphors in medical articles, to see whether the translators managed to render the same connotation of metaphors into English. This study covers some points for translating Persian metaphors into English through Newmark strategies (1988). As regards the most frequent strategy among the seven strategies proposed by Peter Newmark for translating metaphors, it was clarified that metaphors are rarely used in Iranian medical journals and cultural factors don't play an important role in translating. As a result, the researchers have come to the conclusion that titles as a text type may help improve medical academic literacy. This study is part of a growing body of research in the field. In using a largely untapped source of medical translation, this project will contribute to future research on similar topics. Also, the result of this study can be useful for medical and para-medical professionals, students, nurses and doctors in completing and updating their medical education and knowledge because they are the choicest readers of medical articles.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation is to analyze three Spanish translations of Little Women offered by different publishing houses. I will focus mainly on how each translated work describes the leading characters and how this might change the reader's perception of them. It is well known that when translating a document, there is always the risk of losing some part of the original meaning and beauty either because of cultural differences or linguistic ones. Either way, these losses have to be kept to a minimum or, if possible, to be compensated by using multiple resources, in an attempt to maintain the writer’s intentions as well as to deliver the writer’s thoughts and feelings to the reader in the most complete and uncorrupted way. This research will focus on what happens when adequate translation is not accomplished. When the Spanish versions of Little Women are contrasted with the original written by Louisa May Alcott, it is possible to notice that, although it is true the mistranslations do not make the text impossible to be understood, they do diminish its quality; not to mention that the psychological constructions of a character - represented through words and behavior – are altered or omitted, therefore rendering them much more plain and Unrealistic.

We want to see how three theories from different linguistic worlds developed in the second part of the 20th century and at the same time compare and contrast them

Abstract:
Detta examensarbete är indelat i tre delar. Examensarbetet består av en översättning av tre kapitel ur Etta James självbiografi Rage to survive: the Etta James story skriven av James och spökförfattaren David Ritz, samt ett kapitel om vilka textspecifika översättningsproblem som uppstod vid översättningen. Den tredje delen består av en djupanalys av hur varieteten African-American English (AAE) översatts i två andra verk, nämligen I know why the caged bird sings av Maya Angelou och The bluest eye av Toni Morrison där översättningarna av dessa verk jämförs med min översättning av Rage to survive: the Etta James story. Djupanalysens syfte är att undersöka hur många talspråksmarkörer som finns i de ovannämnda verken, samt hur många av dessa markörer är specifika för AAE. Dessutom används Englund Dimitrovas varietetsskala (2001). Detta för att undersöka huruvida måltexterna ligger på skalan i relation till källtexterna genom mängden talspråksmarkörer. Översättningen genomfördes med målet att ligga så nära källtextens stil som var möjligt med hänsyn till målspråkets grammatiska regler och förutsättningar. Detta för att kunna erbjuda den målspråklige läsaren en likvärdig effekt som läsaren av källtexten. För att uppfylla detta mål fick en del kompromisser göras.
This thesis is divided into three main parts. It consists of a translation of three chapters from Etta James’ autobiography named Rage to survive: the Etta James story, written by James herself and ghost writer David Ritz. The thesis also features a part involving the issues that arose when I translated Rage to survive: the Etta James story and how I solved these issues. The third and final part consists of an analysis of how African-American English (AAE) has been translated in two other novels in the past, namely I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison’s The bluest eye. I compare the translations of these two novels with my own translation of Rage to survive: the Etta James story in the analysis where I strive to gain insight into the norms for translating spoken varieties. The translation was carried out with the purpose of maintaining the stylistic and informal markers as intact as possible while at the same time adhering to the grammatical prerequisites of the target language (Swedish).

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the doctrines of justification in the Roman Catholic John Henry Newman (1801‐1890) and the Reformed Protestant Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499‐1562), examining their historical contexts and respective works. Recognition of their common concerns, common commitments, different commitments, and different conclusions provide insight into agreements and variences between Roman Catholics and Reformed Protestants in contemporary ecumenical dialogue. We conclude that many of the classic discrepencies between Roman Catholics and Reformed Protestants are not as irreconcilable as they may appear at first glance. We recognize, for example, a common commitment to union with Christ by the Holy Spirit, a union that imparts twofold righteousness by divine initiative. This righteousness grows in an internal habit of grace, producing virtue as it reaches toward holiness. Such works are a necessary part of justification, which pleases God and receives his favor in the form of rewards. Despite this convergence, however, some irreconcilable differences remain. Most fundamental is the question of justification’s formal cause, whether divine forgiveness is ultimately based upon an internal work of the Spirit or the forensic imputation of Christ’s righteousness. There is also the basic difference of how righteousness is appropriated, by means of faith alone through the sacrament of baptism. Finally, there is disagreement over perseverance of faith, whether Christians are eternally secure in their justification. In addition to advancing scholarship on several issues associated with Newman’s and Vermigli’s doctrines of justification and illuminating reasons and attendant circumstances for conversion across the Tiber, the overall conclusions of this study offer a broader range of soteriological possibilities to ecumenical dialogue among Roman Catholics and Protestants by clarifying the common ground to which both traditions may lay claim.

Abstract:
Millions of lives have been lost over the years as a result of the effects of earthquakes. One of these devastating effects is slope failure, more commonly known as landslide. Over the years, seismologists and engineers have teamed up to better record data during an earthquake. As technology has advanced, the data obtained have become more refined, allowing engineers to use the data in their efforts to estimate earthquakes where they have not yet occurred. Several methods have been proposed over time to utilize the earthquake data and estimate slope displacements. A pioneer in the development of methods to estimate slope displacements, Nathan Newmark, proposed what is now called the Newmark sliding block method. This method explained in very simple ways how a mass, in this case a rigid block, would slide over an incline given that the acceleration of the block surpassed the frictional resistance created between the bottom of the block and the surface of the incline. Because many of the assumptions from this method were criticized by scientists over time, modified Newmark sliding block methods were proposed. As the original and modified Newmark sliding block methods were introduced, the need to account for the uncertainty in the way soil would behave under earthquake loading became a big challenge. Deterministic and probabilistic methods have been used to incorporate parameters that would account for some of the uncertainty in the analysis. In an attempt to use a probabilistic approach in understanding how slopes might fail, the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center proposed a performance-based earthquake engineering framework that would allow decision-makers to use probabilistically generated information to make decisions based on acceptable risk. Previous researchers applied this framework to simplified Newmark sliding block models, but the approach is difficult for engineers to implement in practice because of the numerous probability calculations that are required. The work presented in this thesis provides a solution to the implementation of the performance-based approach by providing a simplified procedure for the performance-based determination of seismic slope displacements using the Rathje & Saygili (2009) and the Bray and Travasarou (2007) simplified Newmark sliding block models. This document also includes hazard parameter maps, which are an important part of the simplified procedure, for five states in the United States. A validation of the method is provided, as well as a comparison of the simplified method against other commonly used approaches such as deterministic and pseudo-probabilistic.

The work is divided into a theoretical part, which describes the evolution of political marketing both in the world and in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the analytical part, which is currently focused on the analysis of political campaigns before the elections. And lastly, the thesis contains practical part, which focuses on research of current situation and the political perception of voters and their current electoral preference.

Abstract:
The present theoretical and biographical thesis deals with the work of Peter Newmark, a prominent Translation Studies scholar. The thesis is based on an analysis of Newmark's monographs and papers and identifies key ideas which constitute his contribution to the development of Translation Studies. Given the context of his time, with the Western world being dominated by neopositivism, Newmark's approach was not in line with the mainstream. The thesis also tries to take into account the chronological development of Newmark's ideas and highlight some ideas from more recent papers, the reception of which was rather limited. Furthermore, the thesis presents the reception of Newmark's ideas and the most important critical responses to them.

El Señor Presidente de Miguel Ángel Asturias, es una de sus novelas más notables del género, y para que entendamos bien la novela, también, elegimos una versión traducida en chino, que es la del traductor, Dong Yansheng (董燕生). Después de leer las dos versiones de El Señor Presidente, sabemos que la novela narra un dictador guatemalteco y el autor crea muchos personajes para demostrar los terribles efectos de la dictadura, incluidos los personajes en la alta sociedad y en la baja sociedad. Además, según Edward Sapir, podemos saber que el lenguaje es inseparable de la cultura. Por eso, esperamos que después de analizar la forma de traducción de los elementos culturales en la novela, a través de la teoría de Peter Newmark, podremos entender, en diferentes contextos culturales, cómo traduce el traductor los elementos culturales.

Abstract:
The assertion that social relationships contribute to a child’s psychological adjustment, health, and overall well-being is commonly accepted and supported by numerous investigations in the clinical child literature (Erdley, Nangle, Newman, & Carpenter, 2001). A wide variety of social phenomena have been examined, including the association between social and emotional adjustment, social network structure, how children are perceived and accepted by their peer group, and children’s ability to establish friendships and close relationships. Given the importance of peer relationships to emotional well-being, it is surprising that this subject has not received greater attention in the pediatric psycho-oncology literature. Understanding children’s social relationships in the context of cancer is important for four primary reasons. First, many aspects related to having cancer and undergoing treatment for cancer, such as school absence, fatigue, interruptions in play and daily activities, changes in physical appearance, strict medical regimens and their associated adverse side effects, and neurocognitive impairments can increase children’s risk for social adjustment problems. Second, positive peer relationships and social support may facilitate the adjustment of children to the experience of cancer. Third, although understudied in the pediatric literature, having positive social support from peers and friends could potentially influence the course of cancer by enhancing the functioning of the neuroendocrine and immune systems. Finally, with a broader understanding of the relevance of social relationships among children with cancer, targeted interventions can be developed and evaluated for their role on outcomes related to adjustment, quality of life, and mediating mechanisms influencing mortality and morbidity. This chapter provides a general overview of the literature related to the role that peers and friendships have on adjustment and presents a review of the relationship of social support to adjustment and health outcomes. The impact of cancer on peer relationships and friendships also is discussed. The chapter concludes with a presentation of extant literature on interventions that have been developed to promote social adjustment and a discussion of future directions. To begin, a description is provided of the terminology and how social processes are often conceptualized. Such information is presented as a heuristic for future research in pediatric psycho-oncology.

Abstract:
Turing gave the presentation ‘Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical Theory’ on a radio discussion programme called The ’51 Society. Named after the year in which the programme first went to air, The ’51 Society was produced by the BBC Home Service at their Manchester studio and ran for several years. A presentation by the week’s guest would be followed by a panel discussion. Regulars on the panel included Max Newman, Professor of Mathematics at Manchester, the philosopher Michael Polanyi, then Professor of Social Studies at Manchester, and the mathematician Peter Hilton, a younger member of Newman’s department at Manchester who had worked with Turing and Newman at Bletchley Park. Turing’s target in ‘Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical Theory’ is the claim that ‘You cannot make a machine to think for you’ (p. 472). A common theme in his writing is that if a machine is to be intelligent, then it will need to ‘learn by experience’ (probably with some pre-selection, by an external educator, of the experiences to which the machine will be subjected). The present article continues the discussion of machine learning begun in Chapters 10 and 11. Turing remarks that the ‘human analogy alone’ suggests that a process of education ‘would in practice be an essential to the production of a reasonably intelligent machine within a reasonably short space of time’ (p. 473). He emphasizes the point, also made in Chapter 11, that one might ‘start from a comparatively simple machine, and, by subjecting it to a suitable range of ‘‘experience’’ transform it into one which was more elaborate, and was able to deal with a far greater range of contingencies’ (p. 473). Turing goes on to give some indication of how learning might be accomplished, introducing the idea of a machine’s building up what he calls ‘indexes of experiences’ (p. 474). (This idea is not mentioned elsewhere in his writings.) An example of an index of experiences is a list (ordered in some way) of situations in which the machine has found itself, coupled with the action that was taken, and the outcome, good or bad. The situations are described in terms of features.
