Abstract:
The present study is a Corpus-based research which analyzes the translation of Body-Related Metaphors in the Holy Koran by Yusuf Ali, Marmaduke Pickthal and Thomas Irving, within the framework of Newmarks procedures of metaphor translation. The data analyzed consists of a sample of 107 words and phrases which are categorized as metaphors of ear, eye, face, and hand. Out of the seven procedures proposed by Newmark for translating metaphors, the translators applied five procedures. None of the translators applied Newmarks fourth or sixth procedure and no new procedure was observed. The results revealed that among 107 metaphors examined, there is a general tendency (57.94%) towards reproducing the same image in the TL, and the three translators translated 68 metaphors (63.55%) using similar procedures. This study concludes that the likely and the most frequent metaphor translation procedures in the Holy Koran are: (1) to reproduce the same image in the TL, Newmarks first procedure; and (2) to convert metaphor to sense (literal meaning), Newmarks fifth procedure. Keywords: metaphor, the Holy Koran, Peter Newmark, procedure

Abstract:
The profound transformations in linguistics during the early 20th century contributed to great investment in linguistic theories and their applications in translation, whose theorizing problems were linked to the development that raised cognitive, linguistic and cultural issues. This relationship was reflected in Peter Newmark’s research, who founded the semantic and communicative approache. He built his translation theory on the idea of not isolating the transmissive act from communication. Newmark provided a definition of communicative translation as it seeks to influence its readers as much as possible with the effect on the readers of the ST. While the semantic translation attempts to convey the exact contextual meaning of the ST as the semantic and grammatical structures of the TL permitted. Translation is also adept in the era of globalization with its influence on the boundaries between many Nations and civilizations. It is a tool for unifying them, and one of the most important means of facilitating the deepening and expansion of people's views toward other cultures. We aim in our research to introduce Newmark's approach to translation, and the disclosure of the potentials it offers to establish a bridge of scientific, human and civilizational communication between academic research and societies. We will focus on defining the criteria and priorities proposed in analyzing texts to highlight how communicative translation makes on the target recipient an effect equivalent to the ST has on the source recipient. And how to achieve accurate communication and its extent by revealing what makes it possible to benefit from the mechanisms of discourse analysis.

Abstract:
The present research featured P. Newmark's translation strategy and procedures applied to the translation of metaphors in literary texts, namely Stephen King's oeuvre. The study revealed the effect of functional style on metaphor translation. The type of metaphor, e.g. dead, cliché, stock, adapted, recent, and original, also proved important for adequate translation. The authors performed a comparative and correlative analysis of metaphors in translations made by different authors. The study was based on descriptive, cognitive, semantic, and lexicographic methods. The general functional analysis revealed grammar and lexical transformations that metaphors undergo in the process of application of P. Newmark's translation strategy and procedures. The article focuses on the optimal ways of metaphor translation as described by P. Newmark. The translator can preserve the original image in the translated text, keep the original metaphor, replace the original image with a common one, render the metaphor using a figurative comparison while preserving the original image and notion explication, ignore the notion explication of the metaphor, or totally remove the image. The analysis proved the significance of P. Newmark's approach to metaphor translation and its methodological value for modern translation theory and practice. The results obtained can be applied both in professional translation and in corresponding disciplines.

AbstractThis study is an attempt to probe into the translation of metaphors in medical articles, to see whether the translators managed to render the same connotation of metaphors into English. This study covers some points for translating Persian metaphors into English through Newmark strategies (1988). As regards the most frequent strategy among the seven strategies proposed by Peter Newmark for translating metaphors, it was clarified that metaphors are rarely used in Iranian medical journals and cultural factors don't play an important role in translating. As a result, the researchers have come to the conclusion that titles as a text type may help improve medical academic literacy. This study is part of a growing body of research in the field. In using a largely untapped source of medical translation, this project will contribute to future research on similar topics. Also, the result of this study can be useful for medical and para-medical professionals, students, nurses and doctors in completing and updating their medical education and knowledge because they are the choicest readers of medical articles.

Swearwords are commonly used in daily communications, but how to translate swearwords appropriately has received relatively little attention. This research explores swearword translation from English into Chinese based on Peter Newmark’s theory of communicative and semantic translation through a case study of the book Steve Jobs. Through detailed analyses, it is proved that translating swearwords should be reader-oriented so that the translations can produce an equivalent effect on the target readers. It is also found that many elements should be considered in swearword translation, such as character of swearer, context, source language and culture as well as target language and culture.

Abstract:
Massive discussion has been done related to the translation strategy, including the proper name. This study discussed the types of a proper name and the translation strategy of a proper name in an English-Indonesian Novel Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret. The data will be presented qualitatively by using Peter Newmark and Lincoln Fernandes theories. Six data are frequently typed into addressing name, four are typed as a geographical place, and one as an object name. Moreover, the most strategies used to engage the equivalence effect are copy strategy with seven data, rendition strategy with three data, and re-creation strategy with one datum. Therefore, the copy strategy can be a solution to deliver proper names into TL because it preserves the proper name and introduces the foreign name of foreign culture to the target language and target culture. Moreover, if a proper name has its equivalence meaning in TL, it might be translated by rendition strategy.

Abstract:
Metaphor translation is often considered as one of the general problems of “untranslatability”. This is due to the fact that metaphors are generally associated with indirectness; therefore, it is hard to translate. It is also often influenced by the culture. Thus, the translator has to carefully consider how to translate metaphor. This paper analyzes metaphor translation in Lauren Kate’s novel entitled Fallen using a framework proposed by Peter Newmark (1988). It is revealed that there are five procedures applied to translate the metaphors namely reproducing the same image in the TL, replacing SL image with a standard TL image, translating metaphor by simile, converting the metaphor into sense, and deleting the metaphor. The possible reasons to use the particular procedures are because the SL images are universal images, the SL images have broad definition or quality, the SL images are confusing, the SL images are offensive, and the SL images are religious terms.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of the present article is to demonstrate the challenges connected with the translation of children’s poetry, and to offer a qualitative analysis of different translation strategies employed in two English translations of the Polish poem for children “Lokomotywa” by Julian Tuwim. The translation analysis is based on the translation strategies proposed by Lawrence Venuti and Peter Newmark. It focuses on the linguistic and cultural differences between Polish and English, and examines the choices of the translation strategies made by the translators, and the impact they may have had on the reception of the poem in the target language. The comparison shows that although there may be some limitations in terms of the target language and culture, the translators are able to find suitable and effective solutions and simultaneously convey the source text’s form and content. The conclusions placed at the end of the paper summarise the features of both translations and emphasise those strategies employed by the translators which are effective and thanks to which the translations are likely to live up to children’s expectations.

Abstract:
This study is about an analysis of the translation of taboo words in “Central Intelligence” movie. It is to shed the type of taboo words and the procedures applied to translate the taboo words. The theories used in this study are from Timothy Jay (1992) to classify the types of taboo words and a theory from Peter Newmark (1987) to analyze the translation procedures. The data are taken from the movie entitled Central Intelligence by choosing 20 data out of 65 data of taboo words. The result of the analysis shows that are seven translation procedures employed in the translation of taboo word. They are cultural equivalent (seven data), reduction (four data), functional equivalent (three data), paraphrase (three data), naturalization, through translation and literal translation (one data each). For the types of the taboo words, the result shows that there are eight types of taboo words of the 20 selected data. They are insult and slurs (four data), profanity (one data), taboo (two data), epithets (three data), slang (four data), scatology (one data), vulgarity (three data) and cursing (two data) of ten types proposed by Timothy Jay. From this study, it is concluded that the taboo words from the SL cannot always be translated into the taboo words in the TL because of the cultural differences.

Abstract:
Summary Growing interest in Spanish-speaking countries in Lithuania leads to the increased number of translations of Spanish and Latin American literature. Therefore, it is important to analyse translations from Spanish into Lithuanian and vice versa to improve the quality of translation work. One of the most difficult elements to translate are culture-specific items that reveal cultural uniqueness. The novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez contains many culture-specific items related to Colombia, that could be difficult to translate. This article aims to analyse and compare translation strategies of culture-specific items from Spanish into Lithuanian, which were used in 1972 by Elena Treinienė and in 2017 by Valdas V. Petrauskas, to translate the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. Firstly, this article defines the concepts of cultural elements and culture-specific items. It also discusses the classification of culture-specific items based on the works of Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Sergej Vlahov, Sider Florin and Laura Santamaria Guinot. Furthermore, this article describes translation strategies of culture-specific items emphasized by Amparo Hurtado Albir, Eirlys Davies, Georges L. Bastin and Pekka Kujamäki. In this research, culture-specific items are counted and described using Santamaria Guinot’s classification, which allows to claim that there are 69 different culture-specific items in “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and they are reflected by 252 examples in the text. These culture-specific items are related with concepts of ecology, social structures, cultural institutions, social universe and material culture. The most common ones are culture-specific items from the category of ‘material culture’. The results of the research allow distinguishing six translation strategies, used in different frequency: transcription, equivalence of situations, actualisation, usage of exoticism, extension and explication, and omission. Both Lithuanian translators Treinienė and Petrauskas mainly used strategies of transcription and equivalence of situations. The analysis of the translation of culture-specific items was performed using the methods of quantitative, comparative, and descriptive translation analysis.

Abstract:
Abstract Translating certain texts from one language to another language might become one of the most challenging tasks for a translator, especially for a text containing a lot of cultural words. A translator is frequently faced with the problem of how to treat the implicit aspects of culture and how to find appropriate strategies in translating a text from a Source Text (ST) into Target Text (TT). It is probably right to say that a translator has to deal with a lot of thigs to do which have not, perhaps, been aware for cultural gaps and their significance in translation. Many translation theorists have concerned with the problems of cultural knowledge and cultural differences for many decades, might be, since translation as sciences had been recognized. Cultural knowledge and cultural differences begin to draw attention from many experts to focus on translation theories and to conduct translation training for academic studies. Therefore, the present paper aims at presenting strategies of translating the cultural concepts by different theorists. In addition to this, it is also expected to reinforce a translator to choose the appropriate procedures and strategies in translating process.---Abstrak Menerjemahkan teks-teks tertentu dari suatu Bahasa ke Bahasa yang lain, seringkali, menjadi salah satu tugas berat sekaligus merepotkan bagi seorang penerjemah, khusunya dalam menerjemahkan teks-teks yang mengandung banyak kata-kata budaya.

Abstract:
Among the signal insights of twentieth-century scholarship was the recognition that early Christianity accorded personal importance to the plebs. First, Eric Auerbach analysed the humble speech forms of early Christianity, contrasting them with the literature of learned pagans. The point was developed by Ramsay MacMullen in an important essay entitled ‘Sermo humilis’. Arnaldo Momigliano applied these insights to the theologians, historians and hagiographers of the fourth and fifth centuries. He showed how Augustine, Jerome, Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret of Cyr succeeded, as pagan intellectuals had not succeeded, in ‘abolishing the internal frontiers between the learned and the vulgar’. Finally, Peter Brown, in a series of brilliant works from The Cult of the Saints to his revised biography of Augustine, supplied a means of discerning in the practice of universal baptism the ‘antidote’ to the exaggerations of fourth-century ascetical elitism. Augustine imparted to the Western Middle Ages a confidence in the power of sacramental grace as efficacious not only for the ascetic few, but as communicating to the many a capacity for growth in charity, purity, and prayer. Such a perspective on the religion of the many bids adieu to Gibbon’s story of ‘philosophy’ collapsing into ‘barbarism and religion’; to Hume’s account of the superstitious and the credulous; and to Henry Hart Milman’s Romantic brand of Liberal Anglicanism as marked by ‘condescension’ towards ‘popular religion’ occluding ‘the thought processes of the average man’; a habit of mind to which Peter Brown surprisingly appended the name of Newman.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The translation of a poetic work is difficult because it needs to transfer poetic strategies, rhyme, and rhythm, and complex themes. Therefore, the translation lacks many structural and thematic features of the source text. The comparative translational analysis of a poem explores all these features and evaluates the translation in comparison to the source language (SL. The present study is the comparative analysis of Urdu text and English translated text of a milestone of “Subh-e-Azadi” by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, translated by Agha Shahid with the title “Dawn of Freedom” under the domain of Peter Newmark’s model of translation. The poem was written in the backdrop of the creation of Pakistan with the dominant theme of lack of accomplishment of the promised dawn of equality, justice, and freedom. This article is a comprehensive account of the comparative analysis of both texts of the poem about strategies and procedures of translation, thematic and structural variations, translation shifts or transpositions, transference of meanings, and semantic variations.

Abstract:
Unlike most translations which are carried out within the Indo-European language-family and culture, the translation of Arabic language and culture into English language and culture tends to cause serious problems for translators. This paper is an attempt to examine the problems and difficulties in translating Arabic ecological terms of literary and religious texts using Peter Newmark’s (1988) ecological categorizations of ‘Fauna’, Flora’, and other ‘Geographical features’ in conceptualised and contextualised examples as parameters for discussion and analysis. Results of the discussion and analysis of the samples used in this paper have highlighted the importance of attending to ecological issues in translation and the need for an eco-cultural approach to be used for solving such problems. Some suggestions and recommendations have been made to help translators adjust their translation methods to fit the Arabic eco-cultural context as well as those who are interested in carrying out further research in this field.

Abstract:
Metaphor is a figurative language whose formation is influenced by cultural background thus the equivalent of source language cannot necessarily be found in the target language. The application of the translation methods can affect the result of translation equivalent. Therefore, this research aims to identify and describe the methods of metaphor translation in the J.M. Barrie’s novel, “Peter Pan”. This is a comparative research since it compares the metaphors found in the English source novel with their translations in its Indonesian translated novel. The metaphorical expressions used as the data are in the form of word, phrase, and clause which were taken purposively and were analyzed descriptively qualitatively based on Newmark’s theory of translation methods. The result shows that (1) there are eight translation methods which are used by the translator such as word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, communicative translation, idiomatic translation, free translation, and adaptation translation; (2) the difference in the linguistic system between the source language and the target language causes not all the metaphorical expressions are able to be translated with the equivalent metaphorical expressions; and (3) translation equivalent can be achieved if the translator is able to adjust the translation methods with the type of metaphorical expressions to be translated.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the contribution of Peter Newman Anim to the development of Ghanaian indigenous Pentecostalism. It examines the theological implications of Anim’s spiritual experience and the subsequent outpouring of the Spirit upon his organisation against the backdrop of the debate surrounding Spirit baptism. The Pentecostal doctrine of Spirit baptism has generated lots of debate between Evangelicals and Pentecostals. While the one contends that the baptism is a once for all time conversion-initiative experience for the Church universal, the other thinks otherwise. This paper takes up the debate from a Ghanaian Pentecostal stable by appealing to the first pneumatic experience that occurred in a secluded village that ignited the Pentecostal fire nationally. This phenomenon occurred outside the expectant Anim’s group, thus raising incisive theological questions concerning the plausible context and condition for Spirit baptism. By means of historical analysis, critical examination, and practical illustration the paper attempts to evaluate the various positions on Spirit baptism.

Abstract:
This article compares the typological exegesis promoted by E. B. Pusey (1800–82) and his colleagues John Henry Newman and John Keble with that of their eighteenth-century Hutchinsonian predecessor William Jones of Nayland (1726–1800). Building on Peter Nockles’s argument that Jones’s emphasis on the figurative character of biblical language foreshadows the Tractarian application of the sacramental principle to exegesis, this article shows how this common approach differs from the more cautious one displayed by the High Church luminaries William Van Mildert and Herbert Marsh. At the same time, both Pusey’s criticism of the mainstream apologetics of his day and his more explicit application of the doctrine of the Incarnation to exegesis resulted in bolder interpretations and a greater emphasis on the necessity of figurative readings (of both the Bible and the natural world) than Jones generally proposed. A shared appreciation of the principle of reserve may explain both these differences and the Tractarian emphasis on a patristic, rather than a Hutchinsonian, inspiration for their approach.
